Behold, I live! Sorry for not updating for so long, shit decided to really hit the fan in my life, and I kinda forgot about this for a while. But I'm back, and will be updating. This chapter is a bit slow to get started, but it's definitely gorier then the rest. Hope you enjoy!
EDIT: I revised this chapter; adding missing words, and changing a few others. Minor things.
Chapter 5
I sat in my office, taking a break to read the newest medical journals during the humans' lunch hour. I listened for any signs of someone entering the ER, or needing attention, but there were none.
I soon noticed hurried footsteps coming from the front entrance of the office, and Bella's voice, "I'm just here to see Dr. Cullen for a few minutes, is he busy?" Careful to avoid detection, I moved quickly to the waiting room where she was.
"Good afternoon, Melody. Oh, Bella; what brings you here?" I smiled politely at her.
"Hey Carlisle, you busy?" She looked a bit worried, and her heartbeat was a bit higher then it should be, even if she ran across the parking lot to get here.
"Not at the moment, it's been rather quiet today"
"Don't jinx it, English" Melody muttered under her breath.
"Umm... Sam's been hurt pretty bad, and he is at the hospital down at La Push, Jake asked me if I could get you for your... expertise," She fiddled a bit as she said that.
I looked at the clock, thinking. I still had 3 more hours to work, but I could easily charm my way out of them. And the opportunity to examine a wolf was hardly something to pass up...
"I'll see if Dr. Setters will let me take the rest of the day off"
"Okay, I'll wait here," She sat in a nearby chair in the mostly empty room.
I smiled at her, then walked away to find Dr. Setters. His scent was all over the hospital, making it difficult to find him that way, but I knew he had a habit of eating little or even skipping lunch, and while I knew he was aware of the dangers of that, I would still remind him of every time I caught him. He would likely be doing paperwork right now though, so I checked his office. Two light taps of my knuckles on the wood elicited a response.
"What do you want?" As pleasant as ever, I see.
"I was wondering if I could take the rest of the day off, a friend of mine is in another hospital and I would like to visit him"
"Come in," he growled. I opened the door and sat down, "So what's this about a friend being in another hospital? Can't you visit him later?"
"I was just alerted to his hospitalization, he was in a car accident, and I would like to see him before his state gets any worse"
"You thinking of going in there and doing another doctor's work?" He looked at me suspiciously.
"No, not at all. I'm confident the doctors there could do just as good a job as I can, but you know the chances of him not seeing tomorrow just as well as I do" He snorted, probably not believing me.
"Alright, you can go and see your buddy. But I want you to work a double shift tomorrow," He waved me off.
"Thank you sir," I smiled and quickly left the room, walking back to the ER's waiting room. A few more people were in there, but none in need of my attention.
"I can leave now, Bella" she brightened up visibly when I said that.
"Can I come with you?" She asked, at my side.
"If Sam's hurt enough to warrant hospitalization, I'm not sure you want to," I paused, as if to think as we walked out of the hospital. "Why don't you stay with Edward? I'm sure he'd be glad for your company, he's been feeling a bit left out since you befriended Jake."
"I... Alright, I'll go back to your place," She walked to her pickup truck before turning back to me for a moment. "Remember to tell them that Jake sent for you," she opened the door and climbed in. I was already in my car, and drove off to the La Push reserve.
I was on the dirt road into the reserve's entrance when a wolf walked into the road a distance before me. I stopped the car, and he looked me in the eye for a moment, displeasure clear even in his current form. He started walking down the road, then paused to look at me, asking me to follow him.
He led me to the La Push hospital, then dipped into the woods to transform. He stepped out, naked except for a pair of shorts, "Sam's being kept in a back room. He keeps on transforming, so the only ones who can take care of him are his wife and us. As you can guess, none of us have any real medical training."
I was silent as we walked through the halls of the small hospital, if you could call it that. I could smell a wolf's blood heavy on the air as we reached his room. Opening the door, the smell would have made me almost vomit if I could. I fought to keep my face pleasant.
The woman who was treating Sam turned to me, a scar running down her face, "are you Dr. Cullen? The vampire? I... did what I could." She motioned to the bandages wrapped around his chest, soaked through with blood, and with a rather odd dip in them. It was as if a part of his chest was missing.
I moved closer to him, inspecting him. He showed no other injuries other then an apparent gaping hole in his chest, "What happened? It looks as if he tried to stop a cannonball with his body."
"You're close. Some vampire bitch came over here with a cannon, and fucked him up pretty hard," the wolf beside me spoke. "We got her back for it, but some... THING came and took her. She called it Master..." He shivered.
I started removing the bandages. They were too tight, possibly restricting his breathing, and were too saturated to do much good anyway. "Do you have any idea where she came from?"
"She was wearing some kind of uniform... I think Seth mentioned finding a couple of scraps," He looked to be deep in thought. "You know, she smelled kinda funny. Less like some kind fermented candy, and more like fermented body. And her 'master' was worse."
"I have heard of some 'true' kind of vampire. A truly vicious breed, without the blind rage of newborns, but some kind of madness that grows with age and power," I had completely unraveled the bandages to show what was clearly a cannon hole. His ribs were shattered, shards remaining in the wound, one even sticking out of his lung. I picked up some tweezers and started pulling them out.
"Oh, and your breed isn't viscous at all."
"We've managed to stay out of the nightmares of humans. They haven't. The Voltiri has no authority over them, because even the weakest nosferatu could likely destroy them. Yet, humans fight them and win. Amazing, the bravery of the human heart," I dropped another shard into a dish; it seemed with every one I pulled out, there were two more to replace it. "While we may be 'vampires' in that we're blood drinking immortals, that's where the similarities end. The nosferatu is considered to be the true breed of vampire, burning in sunlight, and capable of raising an army of the undead from those they've fed on."
"So what, Dracula's real? You're shitting me, right?" He snorted.
"He is, although he's also dead, and all of his bloodline were hunted down. He was the most powerful vampire, and still no other matches his strength or influence. Some humans think he's the first, but the Voltiri have told me of a battle with some over a hundred years before Dracula was even born," I slowly and carefully pulled out the shard from his lung. It was quite a bit longer then expected.
"You've heard a lot about these nosferatu, haven't you?" He sounded concerned now.
"When I was younger, I wanted to be human again. I didn't want to be a monster. The Voltiri used these stories to convince me I wasn't." I actually had some power in their ranks at some point, I added silently. The other end of the shard finally came out, the wound quickly sealing behind it.
"I'll go get the scraps from Seth," the wolf gagged slightly. I felt a slight wind as he left. I continued working; I don't know for how long.
After pulling out all of the shards, disinfecting his gouge, stitching him closed, replacing the bandages, and giving him more painkillers, I finally emerged. My guide was sleeping in the waiting room, a paper bag sitting in his lap. It reeked of foul, dead blood. I picked it up and looked inside to see what were indeed scraps of cloth.
I pulled out the cloth, the tattered pieces hardened from dried blood, making it impossible to tell what color they were previously. On one of the scraps, I noticed an embroidered shield. I pulled out some peroxide and washed it at a sink. While I couldn't be entirely certain of the colors, the words were clear. "HELLSING" and "We are on a mission from GOD". A rook stood proudly in it's distorted colors. There was no mistaking where this came from. The very same monster hunters who killed Dracula and his kin were now after the Uley pack, and possibly us.
I ran back to the empty waiting room where the wolf was sleeping, and slapped him lightly.
"Wha tha fuk do ya want?" He growled sleepily with a swat of his own.
"Your pack is in extreme danger. Hellsing is after you. You need to alert your pack and go away. Far away."
"We can fight those noosefuratoo things, I mean we beat one of them pretty damn hard, she just got the jump on us. We're not moving from our lands," He glared at me.
"Hellsing almost single-handily wiped out werewolves. The Voltiri only started killing them so they wouldn't be slaughtered! They destroyed the most powerful vampire in existence as well as his entire bloodline! Sir Helsing's forces cannot be stopped," I gripped his shoulders, perhaps a bit harder than I should.
He slapped my hands away, "WE'RE NOT LEAVING!" The wolf exploded from him, jaws snapping at me as I jumped back.
"You think you can fight off the armies who killed what was considered to be a King of the undead? Don't be so foolish! And if they're employing nosferatu, who's to say the humans will be spared?" I dodged his attacks, keeping as much distance between us as I could. He kept coming, furniture not slowing him down as he slung a chair across the room with his shoulder. His breath started to fog, and I slowly became aware of the dropping temperature. I heard boots hitting the floor, and saw something red in the corner of my eye, but ignored it in favor of the beast trying to kill me.
The sudden sound of a gunshot nearly split my eardrums, and the wolf's head exploded. The bullet continued, making a hole in the wall, and the wolf fell to the floor, completely lifeless.
"Pathetic mutt. Not even a proper werewolf. And you're an even more pathetic fairy coward," The nosferatu's face was split into a grin despite his apparent disapproval. His hand with the gun was still raised, and he pointed it at me, "I don't think I've ever actually met one of you halfbreeds." He looked at me up and down, his stare piercing me. He put the gun back into his breast pocket, "maybe you'll be a bit more interesting."
Somehow, I only managed to fully absorb one thing he said, "Fairy? I haven't heard that one before." My voice was shaky, and I was still completely frozen.
"Your unfortunate breed was created when some vampire fucked a fairy. Didn't think you'd last this long. Guess you're not as sterile as most halfbreeds, are you?" He laughed and walked towards me, his eyes seeming to burn with glee. Their color actually seemed to change, as if red and orange were dancing in those irises. I tried to run, to look away, to even speak; I couldn't move. He pulled back his arm, his fingers straight.
Faster than even I knew possible, his hand went through my stomach. I screamed in the pain, some small part of me glad I could make that sound. He kicked me, and my body left his arm to fly across the room, hitting the wall. I slid down to the floor, drywall dust and paint chips slowly falling on me. I heard screaming outside, people crying "wolves! Run!" and a stampede, but it seemed so distant, while the nosferatu sauntered through the dilapidated room, and still I couldn't move from my slumped position on the floor. His grin was wider now, shark-like teeth seeming to glow, the fire in his eyes dancing faster. He reached me, then reached into the hole he made with both hands. He ripped me in half, my guts splattering everywhere. He threw both halves of me apart, my head attached to my right side hitting an old couch, the other side of me splattering against the reception. He picked up my stomach, sniffing it.
"You smell so sweet. It's almost sickening," He crushed the organ. Blood, both mine and that of a deer squirting out. "So you drink blood?" He sniffed again, then recoiled,"Filthy animal blood." He threw the remains of my stomach away, only to pluck up a new organ to play with. I could move my arm, but my hips were still attached to the other side of my body, and completely separate from my spine. I started crawling away.
Glass shattered as wolves burst in through a window. The nosferatu looked up from my shredded liver at them, "more doggies to play with?" One of the wolves slipped in my viscera, yelping in fear as he took me and his dead pack member in with wild eyes. The nosferatu stood up, and tossed my liver in their direction. "Want some kibble?" His back was to me, but he seemed to show even more glee then he had before.
A wolf with brown and black fur was the first to leap into the fray. His jaws clamped down on the nosferatu's arm, and the vampire laughed; then his fist hit the wolf's chest. I heard the ribs shattering. I scrambled to the rest of my body, doing the best to collect my innards as I went. The wolf untangling himself from my intestines took notice, and grabbed my leg, dragging my other side to me.
I glanced at the nosferatu, covered in wolves, yet still laughing. Already two wolves were on the floor, dead bodies mangled beyond repair. The wolf helping me, with a light brown body, and a darker face was whimpering and shaking as he positioned my other half. He yelped as the nosferatu pulled out his gun to shoot a wolf in the chest point blank, then again when a kick sent a wolf flying over the two of us. I could already feel myself healing, flesh and bone stitching itself together.
"I'm fine for now. Go help them." The nosferatu looked toward me when I said that.
"So you have some pathetic regenerative abilities?" He wrestled a wolf on his arm to grab the scruff of a wolf on his leg, then freed his other arm to grab it's spine. With almost no effort, he threw the body several feet, the head still in his hand, it's teeth still embedded in his leg. He kicked the head to me. "Pity these dogs don't."
The wolf who had helped me snarled and charged at him, leaping for his neck. The rest of the wolves grabbed his arms, forcing him down to his knees. Powerful jaws pierced his temple, the momentum carrying the wolf, and the head further then the nosferatu's neck would allow. The head was ripped free from it's body, which was no longer able to fight, and was torn apart by the wolves. The wolf with the head worked on crushing it to a pulp.
I quickly gained more movement. As soon as I could, I scrambled to my feet and ran. Behind me, I could see a wolf, now in his human form start a fire. And I thought I saw... shadows rising from the forgotten remains of the nosferatu.
