Wishful Sights Chapter 1
Okay, this is the newer/better/updated version of this story. I cannot update until I've reread and rewrite this entire thing. And I'll probably just keep entering these notes until I've finished this and start updating again. Also adding the "I do not own Dreamworks How to Train Your Dragon or Dreamworks Rise of the Guardians" thing. But bless the creators.
The sun was rising, the snow lightly falling and it was sparkling beautifully all around Berk. All of this was going unnoticed by the little Viking still lying in bed, painfully awake. He could not sleep what so ever. The young Viking had too much on his mind, but that wasn't really a big deal. That was not the worst of it. He was in so much pain, he made sure to grab a small rag to bite on before he went to bed the night before. It was to help with the pain, but it was mainly for his father whom was sleeping below. Hiccup didn't want to wake his father with all his groaning and possible short, small screams. He had no choice but to have his eyes clenched closed. That's where all the pain was after all. All throughout the night, he thought about how much of his life will change. He feared his entire life would be completely different and that thought alone killed him.
His thoughts were shattered when he heard loud thumping on his roof. "Toothless". He breathed out. A very small, sad smile slowly formed on his face. The dragon would always wake him up early in the morning to go flying before he had to do his daily chores. Though this time, he was almost positive that he wasn't going to be needed for anything around Berk now. That thought brought the boy grief, but that wasn't going to drag him down. None of this was. He had to stay strong. After all, he was the chief's son. He was the first dragon trainer on Berk! He had to live up to everyone's, especially his father's, expectations.
He got up like he usually does every early morning and walked to the stairs carefully. As his memory felt that he was coming closer to the stairs, he stretched out both arms, feeling for the stair's railing. Just as his prosthetic leg slipped on the first step, he caught himself and pulled his body back up straight, finally able to descend the stairs with ease. As soon as he hit the very bottom, he walked to one of the corners by the steps, feeling the wall until he hit a familiar item and grabbed it.
During this whole time, Toothless has been growing impatient: jumping and tapping the roof, barely pausing for a couple of seconds to see if Hiccup would come out at any moment in between. Finally, after slowly walking and making sure not to trip over anything, Hiccup came outside and around the corner of his house. As soon as the door opened, Hiccup felt the cold snowy air hit him. To others, it might have been cold enough for their thick, fur long sleeves, but to him it was perfect for his usual outfit. Slightly chilly, but pretty much perfect. The best part of it though was that it cooled down his eyes. They would not stop burning and he longed for them to cool down a bit. The snow did just the trick as he picked up a handful and gently rubbed the frosty liquid against his closed eyes. It still stung, but it helped more than it hurt.
Hiccup suddenly felt a nudge as his best friend sniffed whatever his arms were holding. He chuckled slightly. "Hey there bud, I got you something that will help us from now on."
The dragon made a sound of approval and pressed his tongue at Hiccup's face.
"You're welcome." The Viking said, petting Toothless's head. "There's one catch though." The dragon grunted for Hiccup to continue. "You have to keep your tail still, okay?" Hiccup heard movement coming from his friend and then a touch at his ankle. He squatted down to feel what he expected to be his dragon's tail. Smiling from being correct, Hiccup rubbed the scaly tail. Slowly and carefully, Hiccup put on the new tail he had just made soon after Toothless destroyed the previous tail a few days after Snoggletog. He never thought that he would need to use it to fly with him, only when something had come up like that day back then. Just thinking about not being able to fly together with Toothless anymore made him upset again. He ran his hands up and down the equipment to feel if everything was in its place. "Alright Toothless." He stood back up, turning towards to face him (the best he could at least).
Hiccup heard the sound of gears turning and knew the tail was on correctly. Toothless prodded Hiccup's chest, making what he knew were sad noises. He hugged the head of his dragon. "I'm sorry Toothless, but I can no longer steer with you. You'll have to be the only one in control now." He told the dragon sadly.
The one thing he loved doing the most; the one thing that bonded him and his best friend is now gone. Sure he can still ride on his dragon, but it just won't be the same anymore. He sighed and released him from his hold. "Ready?" Toothless was hesitant before turning his body for Hiccup to climb on his back. He held onto the saddle as the dragon stepped into starting position and the moment he was about to take off, they heard Hiccup's name being called from a distance. Toothless stopped, hearing footsteps running towards their right side.
"Hiccup," his father called to him again, making sure the boy and his dragon won't take off. Hiccup looked towards the source of the Chief's booming voice, now becoming a soft, stern tone. "Where do you think you're going?" He asked.
"I'm taking Toothless flying… Like I do every day. Well," Hiccup shrugged a shoulder, "more like he's taking me flying now."
Hiccup felt a large hand on his shoulder. "Son, do you really think it's safe for you to fly anymore?" Stoick asked. That question scratched at his heart. He tried to think of a convincing answer to reassure his father that he was going to be safe. There is no way that Hiccup would stop flying on his dragon, and there wasn't anything that's going to stop him. Not even his blindness.
He let out a quiet sigh before he spoke. "I trust Toothless. I know he'll keep me safe. Right bud?" He patted Toothless's head, and the Night Fury nodded at his rider's father. Stoick stared at the dragon, glancing at his tail before letting out a long sigh.
"Alright. Just be careful." He said to Hiccup, and then looked at the dragon straight in his eyes. "He better come back the same way he left, Night Fury." Toothless made a sound of displeasure as if he felt insulted that he wouldn't do anything to protect Hiccup with all his life. He did save him couple of hundred times!
"Thanks dad." Hiccup smiled and petted Toothless behind the ear. "Let's go, Toothless, before more snow falls." He felt the snow that had piled on him as he wiped some off his head and onto his eyes. Hiccup could not see the look of pity and sadness on his father's face as he did that and launched into the air.
Flying was tough on Hiccup. He used to move his body with his dragon's as they flew together. Now, he had no idea which direction would come next and the whole thing felt so off and slightly uncomfortable. He had to hold onto the saddle more tightly now and had to pull himself back into the seat a few times.
After a while, they did a few twirls in the air and maneuvered around the high island pillars. It took a while for Hiccup to get into rhythm of each maneuver though. They also did some dives and touched the clouds, almost the usual stuff. Though the one thing they couldn't do that he loved so much was jump off of Toothless's back and free fall with him. He and Toothless wouldn't want to risk that.
After a long flight (but not as long as the usual), they had landed, but Hiccup was unsure as to where though. It was too quiet for the village, and the ground was grassy, so it couldn't be the academy.
"Alright bud, where are we?" He began walking slowly, one hand reaching out while the other rested on Toothless. There were very slight small hills and craters. No trees around so far, but a few giant rocks here and there. He was completely clueless until he slipped on ice. He didn't fall on his bottom with Toothless being there to catch him. "Are we at the cove?" He turned to face Toothless as he purred a yes. He smiled.
When he needed to clear his mind and relax, this was the place to be, and the Night Fury knew it. "Can you guide me to a tree log, or a boulder? Somewhere to sit?" Toothless obliged, guiding his rider to a large rock to sit on.
Hiccup sat and scooped up some snow. It was a few inches above his ankles. Plenty of snow to make a snowman. Finding that idea appealing, he dropped his newly formed snowball back in the snow and began to make it bigger. After a whole lot of tripping and bumping into things including his forming snowman, he finally made a probably-completed snowman that was half his size. He wasn't so sure how the face looked, but the structure seemed fair. As far as he could feel, it seemed like a pretty great snowman.
Choosing to sit back down again, he decided to cuddle up against Toothless, leaning his back against his stomach. "Is this really how the rest of my life is going to be, Toothless?" He sighed, forming a snowball in his cold hands. The dragon purred. It didn't sound sad, but it didn't sound happy either. Snow began to fall more. The two sat there in silence.
A slight breeze flew along with him as he landed in an area where a boy and a dragon were sitting in the snow. Jack Frost was intrigued. He has never seen a dragon this close before. He's only seen them in books that Jamie has shown him, and according to North, dragons really do exist. Jack just hasn't been around these tiny islands up North, though he guess it made sense.
Looking at this dragon, Jack didn't think it was all that dangerous with it being with a scrawny looking boy, but for now, he stayed a distance away in a dead tree.
A snowball landed below him. He stared at it, baffled as to why a snowball was just thrown at him. Then another one was thrown towards him, hitting the tree. Hm, maybe he'll have a little fun with this kid.
Swiftly and quietly, he floated down to the ground, keeping an eye on the two in front of him as he scooped up some snow, making it a ball before launching it at the boy sitting against the sleeping dragon. And from the distance away, he heard an "ow!" from his target. Jack grinned as he stood up from his crouching position after he got another snowball ready, but when he looked up, he took a step back as the dragon stood up, surprising Jack with a glare that aimed directly to him.
"Who did that!?" The boy yelled. "Snotlout!? Is that you!? That's not fair! I can't see you!"
Of course. Jack sighed, dropping the snowball in defeat. How could he have fun with just one person that could not see him? What was he thinking? Even though the dragon seemed to have seen him, the boy could not. He didn't need to be here.
Just as soon as Jack was about to leave, the dragon pounced at him, just barely nicking his sleeve but knocking his staff right out of his hand. Panicking, Jack didn't even think about going for his staff which is now buried in the snow after being stepped on by this beast. Instead, he ran for the ice, knowing that he could easily control his gliding a lot better than a dragon.
The black beast screeched in rage. "Whoa Toothless! What are you doing!? What's going on?" Jack heard the voice from the dragon's friend, and decided to run towards him. The dragon wouldn't hurt this human right? Only one way to find out.
Jack ran straight behind the boy, using him as a shield right as the dragon started chasing, but stopped suddenly before colliding with his friend. His friend though, feeling the wind of the dragon, had backed away from the beast, and Jack was ready for the kid to go right through him. But instead, the kid had almost knocked him down when he collided into guardian's chest. Startling them both, they fell away from each other. The brown hair boy leaned against his dragon, calming him down by petting its nose.
"I'm sorry." He said. Jack was speechless. "Who's there?" The white haired boy stood up slowly.
"Can you- can you see me?" He asked, keeping a careful eye on the dragon.
"I can not." So wait… How can that be then? The boy can't see him, but he answered his question, and didn't go right through him. Jack glanced again at the brown haired boy and barely noticed that his eyes were closed under his fringes. "Who are you?" He asked again.
"I-I'm Jack." He paused. "Jack Frost." Then Jack had to be sure. It probably is a possibility that of course if the boy can talk to him he knows he's here, then yeah, he should be able to see him! But he just needed the answer. "What's your name, and can you," He paused, slightly nervous for some reason. "Can you open your eyes for me?" The smaller male stood up away from his dragon and frowned.
"My name is Hiccup… And no. I can't open my eyes."
