His second year attending Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy searched the Hogwarts Express but could find no compartments with available seats, save one. In it was seated a blonde-haired girl, already wearing her class robes, reading a book.

He entered the compartment and sat down.

After several minutes, he began fidgeting.

Finally his boredom getting the best of him, he decided to strike up a conversation.

"Hello, I am Draco Malfoy, heir to the House of Malfoy," he said, as if it implied he was somehow royalty.

"Luna Lovegood, heiress to the Houses of Lovegood, Primdale, Stanley, and Livingston," the girl said without looking away from her book.

Draco was knowledgeable about all of the magical families, and here was a far more worthy wife than Pansy, in his mind. Heiress to four of the most ancient houses of Magical Europe was far superior to merely the eldest daughter of a rather minor house.

He decided to try and impress her. "Would you like to talk? The train ride will go quicker if we have a conversation," Draco quipped.

"What topic do you wish to discuss?" the girl asked, her nose still firmly in her book.

"Oh, I don't know," Draco said, knowing exactly the approach he would take to woo a maiden whose blood was clearly pure as the driven snow, "We could discuss the proper place of those of us who are purebloods and how we will maintain our place in society while keeping our society from being polluted by mudbloods." he said.

The loud crash of the book closing startled him. "Very well, Draco Malfoy. That could be an interesting topic, however let me ask you a question first," Luna stated primly.

Draco nodded.

"A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same thing - grass. Yet a deer excretes small pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?" she asked.

Draco was visibly surprised by the demonstrated level of intelligence this girl showed.

"Far more intelligent than Pansy, certainly!" he thought.

"I have no idea," Draco answered honestly.

Luna opened her book and began reading again, "Do you really think you're qualified to discuss blood status, the placement of purebloods in society, and spontaneous magical manifestation, when you don't know shit?" she asked dismissively.
