He Must Have Had Some Good Editors
Summary: Ron tries to use Lockhart's own books against him.
Genre: Friendship
Characters: Ron Weasley, Harry Potter
Timeframe: Winter holidays in Chamber of Secrets.
Ron sighed dejectedly as he closed the last book. Slumping on his bed, he pushed the book away from him, toward the stack a few feet away. Nothing! He'd gone all the way through 7 books and found nothing! Reading in detail, even! Maybe'd he should owl Mum for her books-
"Er, Ron? What are you doing?"
Ron jumped and looked up. Harry stood in the doorway, a puzzled expression on his face.
"And... are those... Lockhart's books-"
"Yes." Ron interrupted.
"Why? I mean, we've already finished his homework, thank goodness, so..." He gestured helpless at the books.
Ron straightened himself up and stubbornly set his jaw. "I was looking for proof."
"Proof of what? How stupid he is?" Harry sat on the edge of the bed, pushing the books out of his way.
"Yes! I was hoping to find, I don't know, inconsistent dates or contradicting information. But there's nothing!, Harry, not one thing! At least, as far as I can tell." Ron picked moodily at the edge of his quilt. "He's an idiot! Why isn't there something!"
Harry looked at him sympathetically. "Millions of people have read this stuff, mate. Any errors would have been caught, and anyway, he could just claim it's a misprint." Harry considered for a second, the added, "And he probably has editors."
"He must have had really good editors." Ron muttered.
The sat in silence for a moment.
"It was Hermione, wasn't it." Harry finally said.
"What do you mean?"
"This. You were looking for proof that Hermione was wrong, weren't you?"
Ron flushed slightly. "Yeah. It's just gotten so annoying. I mean, he's failed to catch pixes, removed your bones, let us get a dangerous book without looking at it-"
"That worked in our favor, though." Harry pointed out.
Ron ignored him. "- his classes are a joke, we learn nothing and yet she still hero-worships him! It's aggravating. I thought if I could show her a book proving he's an idiot she'd listen, but, you know..." He trailed of.
"Nothing to be found." Harry finished for him.
"Yeah. So I guess this whole afternoon was a waste of time, unless you count the fact that I'll probably ace his stupid quizzes now."
"Worth a try, though." Harry said encouragingly. "Anyway, I came to tell you that the twins want a snowball fight. They're currently trying to talk Percy into joining us."
Ron snorted. "Good luck to them. Let me grab my stuff, then we'll take them down."
The two boys ran out of the dormitory, leaving the books abandoned behind them.
A/N: The whole prove-Lockhart's-an-idiot-by-finding-inconsistencies-in-his-books thing is pretty common in fan fictions. I also think it's unlikely. See above fic.
