Prompt #2 for GaaSaku Month!

If you would have told him five years ago that he would have been brought back from the dead, became one of the most loved and respected Kazekages in all of Suna, led the Shinobi alliance to an all out war against the Akatsuki, married one of the strongest ninjas he had ever known, and be happy about it...he probably would have killed you.

But yet, here he was.

Peace times in Suna had become more than anyone had ever dreamed of. Merchants came from all around to sell their products and the people of Suna gladly complied.
Food and water were abundant, crime was down, and the once empty nursery of the hospital was now overflowing with new life.

Gaara found that his once long workdays were now cut in half since there weren't that many issues that needed attending to. The elders even stopped their weekly meetings and made them on a semi-annual basis.

At first, all of the free time made him feel like he was ignoring the needs of his people and country. But as he looked around, he realized that, for now, they really didn't need him.
It was awkward to be at home during the day. It didn't take long to realize that he really didn't have a life outside of his office and responsibilities...Sakura, however, made sure that he did.

The time he use to spend reading scrolls and signing official documents was now spent taking her around town, enjoying all of the scenes, activities, and restaurants they never really had time for before.
A pang of guilt ran through him, he hadn't known that this is what she had wanted to do this whole time...it made him feel like he had been ignoring her.

Picking up on this immediately, she quickly put to rest his worries and assured him that if she got time to spend with him, that was exactly what she was going to do.

The pregnancy, of course, had been a totally unplanned accident. Sakura mumbled to herself about idle hands and having way to much free time that had caused it. Gaara was still in shock at the news.
It was something they hadn't even talked about yet. Of course it was assumed that eventually they would have children, but not now, not yet.

And if she thought he was overprotective before...well, she had no idea what overprotective was.

She complained that once the news was announced to the village, he didn't let her do anything on her own anymore. If she went grocery shopping, they went grocery shopping. If she wanted to go get new clothes that would fit her growing belly, he made sure that Temari went with her.

Her pleas fell onto uncaring ears. He didn't see why she was complaining in the first place. Before, he counted on her to protect herself and, if needed, he would step in. But now she was not only his friend and mate, she was his family. It wasn't just her life he was concerned about anymore.

When he had voiced his opinion, she had simply smiled at him and gave him a quick kiss. Hormones, he realized, were a crazy, terrible thing.

Lying in bed, staring up at the ceiling, he reflected on his life as the sound of Sakura making breakfast in the kitchen echoed down the hallway.

He reflected on the word 'family' and how its meeting to him had changed so drastically over the years. He would never have guessed that simple things like Sakura humming in the kitchen as the smell of food traveled to his nose would make him so overwhelmingly happy.

"Gaara! I know you're awake! Come eat while it's still warm!"

Slowly sitting up, he threw some pajama pants on and walked down the hallway. He couldn't help the smile that spread its way onto his face.

He came up behind her and attempted to wrap his arms around her waist. Her stomach had grown so much, he could barely grasp his fingers.

Sighing and leaning into him, she let him support most of her weight as she gently rocked back and forth.

Family he thought as he closed his eyes. There could be nothing better.
