Justin's eyes felt heavy as he tried to open them, and he moved his eyes, trying to blink. He could feel a deep ache on his lower stomach, and slowly he began to remember what had happened. He had gone into labour.
"Justin? Are you awake?" His mother's voice penetrated his ears, and he forced his eyes open. At first, the light blinded him, but soon he focussed in on her face. She was leaning over him, smiling. He relaxed at her smile.
"Where are they? Are they okay?" Justin asked, trying to fit up. Jennifer calmed him quickly, and it was only then that he looked at what she was holding.
In her arms was a bundle of blue. He could see little blond hairs through his hat, and Justin sighed in relief. Jennifer chuckled at the look of awe, and handed the little one over to him. Justin was shaky as he took his son into his arms.
"He's beautiful." Justin whispered, a lump having formed in his throat. Softly, he ran his finger over the baby's face, watching as his tiny fingers clenched and unclenched. Although his eyes were closed, he could see the baby was aware of him, and leaned down to place a kiss on his head.
Jennifer watched as Justin bonded with his child, and she couldn't help but chuckle when the baby coughed quietly. Justin looked up.
"What happened?" He asked, and Jennifer took a shaky breath. She didn't have all the answers herself, but she knew Justin would worry even more if he wasn't told. He had to understand what had happened.
"You suffered a rupture during the procedure; fainted from the blood loss. Thankfully, the doctors acted quickly. You've had a blood transfusion, but you should be fine in a couple days." Jennifer told him.
His eyes wandered back down to his son, who had begun to wake up. He made a noise between a wail and a sigh, and Justin panicked. Jennifer chuckled as Justin soothed the baby, rocking him as he had done with Gus.
"He's hungry, that's all." Jennifer told him, watching as Justin's face tightened considerably. She could see his worry, but also a subtle annoyance with himself that Jennifer was well aware of. It had been something she had seen many times before.
"What do you give them?" Justin asked, rocking the little bundle softly. His jaw was tight, and he found himself shaking as he listened to his son whine in hunger.
Before she could answer, Daphne walked into the room, and Justin forced a smile at her as she walked further in. She stopped when she was close enough to take Justin's hand, and Justin gave her a light squeeze. He didn't trust his voice, but at the same time he was happy that she was there. Jennifer cleared her throat.
"You can feed him. The doctor seems quite certain that you can. Just… maybe with the pump." Daphne said, smiling comfortingly at her friend. Justin looked confused for all of a second, but then his expression cleared and his mouth opened in realisation.
Daphne tried to hide her surprise as Jennifer showed Justin how to use the machine. Debbie had taken the time to buy them while everyone else waited patiently for Justin to wake up. Melanie and Lindsey were the ones to bring it up, and they had decided it was best to be prepared. It was two suction pumps which connected to bottles on either end. Daphne could see how uncomfortable it was making him, but Jennifer didn't seem to notice.
Carefully, Jennifer gave the baby to Daphne before sitting herself on the edge of the bed. She had connected the pumps to tubing, which led to an electric machine. They had been told that this was the best way for him to try and do so, but the whole idea was making Justin squirm.
"So, you hold them, and I'll turn on the machine." Jennifer told him, leaning beside her to press the buttons. Justin winced at the pulling sensation, aware that his chest didn't seem rounded in any way. He was still flat chested, and that made him doubt the pump. He watched it as it moved, and tried to disconnect himself from the sound of his son crying.
After a couple minutes the suction began to ache, and although there was translucent liquid balling around his nipples, nothing had expressed into the bottles. His mother sighed, soothing him as he frowned.
"It takes a while for it to happen, for some people. You friend even told me it took him nearly two weeks before it actually happened." She said in comfort, and Justin just frowned more. Jennifer didn't say a word as she removed the machine from him, and immediately he reached for his son.
"Where's Brian and the other baby?" Justin asked as Daphne handed him over. Jennifer froze momentarily, and Justin asked her again, this time holding his son close.
Instead of answering her son, she went out of the room, leaving Daphne alone with Justin. She handed him a bottle, and Justin recognised it as formula. Slowly, he took if from her, pressing it lightly to the baby's lips. He gargled slightly, before settling, and Justin relaxed into the hospital cushion.
"Is the baby okay?" Justin asked, worry making his mind fuzzy. He wanted to see his baby. Daphne sighed, coming closer to sit by Justin's bed.
"The baby's fine. Brian has been showcasing them to your whole family since early this morning. You'll see them soon, he should be coming any minute now." Daphne said, and Justin narrowed his eyes at her.
He knew when Daphne was lying to him, and although there was truth to what she was saying, Justin could hear the false note in her voice. He frowned, glancing down at the blond baby in his arms, who had stopped feeding. He moved the bottle away, burping him like Lindsey had shown him. It was times like these that Justin realised how much he needed them.
The baby soon began to sleep, and Justin lost himself in the sight of his child. He had never considered children before this, and now the very idea of anything happening to them made his blood run cold. He was so engrossed in the little one that he didn't hear people enter the room until his mother patted him on the arm, smiling down at him. He flushed, smiling back at her before looking at the people in the room.
At the far end stood Michael and David, grinning at him. Next to them were Lindsey and Melanie, Gus in arms, and behind them were Ted and Emmett. He could see towards the other side his Aunt and cousins, and his little sister in the far corner. Right at the front with Jennifer was Debbie and Vic, who beamed at him happily. He smiled back, and then moved his eyes to the end of the bed, where Brian stood.
In Brian's arms was a white bundle. He could see even from across the bed that the baby was much smaller than the one he held, and their hair was black. Justin stared at the sight; Brian holding the little baby, smiling gently at him. He didn't move from where he was sat, but Brian seemed to understand his longing to see the second child.
Slowly, Brian sat on the edge of the bed, close to Justin. He looked down to where Justin was holding the sleeping baby, and a tiny, genuine smile broke out on his face. Justin reached his hand out to take Brian's and they both grinned at each other.
"Would you like to meet our daughter?" Brian asked, a secret smile forming as he watched Justin's mouth open and close. Daughter? He moved his gaze down to the little bundle, and took in the sight of the tiny face.
"Daughter?" Justin asked, accepting as Brian gently placed the baby girl down into his other arm. She moaned softly in her sleep, her nose twitching slightly. He chuckled at her, his head bowing down to press against her tiny head. She didn't wake.
His mind on the twins, he didn't notice as his family and friends began to leave the room, leaving him and Brian alone with the two babies in his arms. Brian gingerly took the boy from Justin, placing him down in his own lap to cradle him.
"I hope you don't mind, I named them. We can change it if you want." Brian stated into the calm silence, and Justin met Brian's eyes.
"What are their names?" He asked, looking between the three faces. Brian chuckled, but didn't answer for a time.
Justin found himself trying to place their names, but even as he pictured them with his favourite baby names, he couldn't find one that fit them perfectly. He hoped Brian had better luck in that department.
"His name is Bow. It just seemed to suit him." Brian said, running a hand over the little mound of blond hair. Justin nodded. "And her name is Jesse. I knew you liked that name." He added after a moment.
"It's perfect." Justin said, unable to take his eyes off the little baby in his arms. Brian sighed happily, and Justin couldn't tell whether it was in relief or just genuine happiness.
They remained silent for a few moments, both caught up in their children's features. Justin had memorised the curve of their noses, the thin pink rise of their lips. He felt the delicate softness of their skin and hair, taking in their scent. He was completely overwhelmed by a sense of pride, and love. Brian made sure to look at Justin regularly, unable to get passed the sight of Justin with his children.
It wasn't until a nurse came in that they looked up, and the woman smiled at them both. She checked Justin's monitors, adjusting the drip in his arm as she asked how he was feeling. She was done quickly, and turned to them.
"I just need to take them for some more tests – don't worry it's completely harmless." The nurse stated, and Brian rolled his eyes as he handed Bow over to her. Justin was a little more hesitant, but slowly handed Jesse to her. Once she left, he turned to Brian.
"It's nothing, they are just making sure the twins are healthy. They were premature, so they are being extra careful." Brian said, and Justin found himself relaxing into the sheets. They were okay.
Before Justin could ask him any more questions, their friends came back in, and Justin immediately brightened at the sight of them.
"We're just about to leave, but we'll all be up bright and early tomorrow." Lindsey told him, smiling. Justin nodded, and chuckled as they all took turns to hug him. Even Ted gave him a hug, and he awkwardly patted him. Everyone laughed at the gesture.
They took their time leaving, and Daphne stayed a couple minutes longer to gush about the adorableness of his children. Justin's cheeks had begun to hurt from smiling, and he just nodded. She left with an enthusiastic wave
"Cam and Lenny are still in the waiting room; they wanted to see you." Brian informed Justin after their friends had all left. Justin's eyebrows rose in surprise, and Brian chuckled, leaving the room briefly. Justin looked around the hospital room, seeing the flowers and congratulation cards dotted around.
When Cam and Lenny walked in, they weren't alone. Behind them were Justin's family, and Justin grinned as Molly launched herself onto the bed. He could tell she had been told not to before, and he hugged her tightly.
"Hey." He greeted them, stroking his little sister's hair before pulling away. She beamed at him, and he couldn't help but return the gesture.
"I'm an Aunt!" Molly said excitedly, and Justin laughed. Everyone in the room began to chuckle, and slowly she stepped down from the bed, blushing. He smiled at her, and he could tell she was very happy to have nieces and nephews.
Cam came up to give Justin a hug, followed by Lenny, although Justin could sense Lenny was less comfortable than Cam was. Behind them was their son, Bailey, who was looking curiously at Justin. Justin waved at him, and he shyly waved back, hiding behind his father's legs. Cam chuckled.
"How are you feeling?" Cam asked, smiling in thanks as Lenny picked their son up. Justin shrugged, although he was aware of the tight feeling in his lower abdomen. He knew the bump wouldn't completely leave just yet, and it gave him comfort to see the slightly rounded stomach.
"I don't know. It's so different now." Justin said honestly, causing Cam to chuckle in understanding, and Brian smiled.
It was hard to explain how he felt, but a part of him longed for the familiar feeling of the twins moving around inside him, safe and warm. He expected the extra weight as he walked, and the pressure as he lay down, but it wasn't there.
"Cam complained for months that it was too strange to not be pregnant. I was still getting over the fact that he was in the first place." Lenny stated, and Justin chuckled. He was grateful that they were there with him. Carol and Jennifer were speaking quietly in the corner, and Justin could see Marcus on the chair with Molly.
Turning slightly, he spoke to his family, watching them all rush into conversation about how beautiful his babies were, and even Marcus was warmly smiling as they spoke. Brian was talking to Cam and Lenny.
"Have you decided on names yet?" Marcus asked, to which Carol piped in to ask him. Jennifer just smiled, watching Justin grin at them.
"Bow and Jesse." He stated, and he could see the clear look of approval from his Aunt and mother, while Marcus looked thoughtful. He knew Marcus was difficult to please, and didn't try to question the look.
"Congratulations, Jus." Marcus said, grinning over at his cousin. Justin grinned back, and everything seemed to fall into place.
