Disclaimer: I don't own Full House. This is an AU story
DJ was only seven years old when it happened. She was driving in the car with her mother when suddenly there was a sickening crash. Pam was fine but DJ wasn't. The glass from the window sliced into DJ's leg and there was so much damage they had to have it removed. DJ was devastated about it at first but soon she began to realize it was an advantage. If she was asked to do a chore from the time she was eight (she wasn't realized from the hospital until after her birthday) she pointed out that she couldn't do it because she was missing a leg. If she got in trouble for something she said it wasn't fair for her to get punished because she was missing a leg. At first her parents gave into her but soon they realized it was a disservice to her. They didn't want her to see herself as a cripple so they ended up devising a plan. They felt bad about it but they had to do it for DJ's sake.
It all began when DJ came home from school. Pam was baking chocolate cake. DJ loved chocolate cake and she wanted some.
"Oh sweetie I would love to give you some cake. The thing is that you only have one leg so you can't have it."
DJ was confused.
"But mommy I can eat the cake with one leg," DJ said.
"Well how can I know that," Pam said, "I mean you say you can't pick up your toys with one leg or make your bed with one leg or go to your room with one leg or be gotten mad at with one leg so how do I know you can eat cake with one leg."
"I don't like to be gotten mad at," DJ said, "or any other bad stuff too or anything boring. I like cake."
Pam cut her a slice of cake.
"DJ," she said, "If we let you and your sisters get away with things you shouldn't get away with it wouldn't be fair to you. Life can be very unfair sometimes and as a parent you have to prepare children for living in this world. In your case for example that means a lot of love like every child needs. It also means a lot of therapy like you have been getting. But what it also means is teaching you to not see yourself as disabled and that means having the same rules and responsibilities that your sisters have. Do we always make the right choices? No. No person ever makes the right decision all the time. But as a parent you have to do the best you can. Do you understand?"
"I guess," DJ said, "But I still don't like all the things you do."
"Well that's okay," Pam said, "I didn't always like what my parents did. I sometimes hated it but DJ if you have a problem with something talk to me and dad about it. You know that we love you. Maybe we'll agree. Maybe we won't. But we will always do what is right for you."
"Alright," DJ agreed. I don't like washing the dishes. I'd rather cook."
"I didn't know you had an interest in cooking," Pam said.
"I do," DJ said, "I learned to cook in school and I really want to do it."
"Well wash your hands and you can help me make dinner," Pam said.
"What are we having," DJ asked.
"Hot dogs," Pam said, "Fries and Brussels sprouts."
"I can't eat Brussels sprouts," DJ said.
"Why not," Pam said, "And don't tell me because you only have one leg."
"No," the nine year old said, "Because it's gross"
