"The night is young" - they said - "Let's go to karaoke."
And there were all the guardians sitting in a comfortable red couch, confined inside a room equipped with a television and a sound system that Pitch suspected to be very old.
In the huge North's hands reposed a catalog of songs, thousands of options. Rock, jazz, blues, rap, heavy metal and many others that would be virtually impossible to list. And the nightmare king was not really in the mood for flipping and discovering musical styles. In fact he did not even know the reason for why he was there, sitting in the middle of those dummies. Maybe it was the misfortune of being a guardian now.
"Aha!" - Santa exclaimed, typing the number of the chosen song before grabbing the mic and clearing his throat, making strange noises. Jack laughed.
Tooth clapped to the music rhythm, trying to follow the lyrics, but it did not take long for the room to became filled with desynchronized voices and giggles from the winter spirit. Pitch sighed.
The next song was from Bunnymund. The rabbit had chosen a country style and he tapped his feet following the beat. North was so excited that he had called the tooth fairy to dance, and they now occupied half of the room with Sand clapping with excitement.
Time had quickly drained in the clock when the only woman in the group grabbed the microphone, rising her voice and flapping her wings in a cheerful way. It was a soft melody that made everyone sit on the couch again.
Through the window, Pitch could see, the night was very dark and the cold wind blew through the streets of that city that he could not remember the name. He might be walking around, spreading fear and nightmares, but no! He had to...
"It's your turn" - Jack Frost rested his precious blue eyes into the yellowish, offering him the microphone.
"Why do you think I'm going to sing?" - he asked sharply.
"Please" - and there was something in that sentence, in the boy's voice, that made Pitch get soft.
He extended his long fingers and grabbed the microphone, standing up from the corner where he was to pick a song. The room was completely silent.
Finally Pitch started singing. His voice was strong, yet soft, with hints of melancholy and pieces of memories that he could not recall.
Emotion rose in his throat and uttered in words, revealing things that the king himself did not know that he was still capable of feeling.
The shadows around his cape trembled slightly with excitement, contentment.
The voice filled the place, searching deep in the boogie man soul –of his heart- those tears that he did not allow himself to cry.
And when the song ended Pitch felt his whole body, shadows and flesh shudder.
He then looked back, seeing, to his surprise, the guardians asleep.
North snored loudly with Tooth resting her head on his shoulder. Bunnymund with open mouth and Sandman fighting to not fall with his forehead on the floor.
Pitch dropped the microphone.
He did not know if the magic sand had infected everyone, but the issue now was that he would take them home. Misfortune of being a guardian now.
The shadows involved the sleeping bodies, and that was when a gentle rain of snowflakes started.
"It was a nice song" - Jack muttered.
Pitch nodded not knowing what to really say.
"Actually... Your voice is very beautiful."
And the king of nightmares turned his head to hide the small smile that appeared on his lips.
