A/N:Hey guys! Sorry it's been so long, been having a lot of personal stuff going on. Also as you may have noticed this chapter is shorter than usual-sorry!-I just kind of wanted to get something out to show this story isn't abandoned.

Also as of right now this chapter is unbeta'd, if someones willing to beta for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Seeds of Woe

"O Spirited One, keeper of estranged and tranquil souls, created by the great gods of old I beseech thee-"

Laxus' breath hitched, beads of sweat rolling down his temples like quicksilver worrying Lucy who hovered over him in concern. Her large cinnamon eyes looking a tad panicked from being awoken at such a late hour-Laxus was screaming again-figuring him to somehow moved past these 'episodes' from back when they were living on the streets together.

Even now his harsh mutterings and urgent whispers were a great cause for concern in her mind; Laxus, what-what's wrong with you?

"No-...p-please!"Another choked whisper escaping his lips, his body jerking, turning onto it's side.

"No."

"-Answer my call and surrender yourself to darkness-"

"No."

"-purge this tainted world of all who would oppose me, submit yourself to my will and mine alone!"

"NO!"

He shot upright. The deafening cry that fell from his lips leaving both himself and Lucy in a state of alarm. Then all too soon he fell apart again, shoulders trembling. Lucy immediately pulled him into her embrace allowing him the cushion of her shoulder-warm, inviting, caring-her very presence soothed him.

With shaking fingers he found himself slowly returning the hug, however reluctant as he himself was never too keen on physical contact. Lucy was all he had left, however, and if a hug was needed, well...

….it would be damn well worth it in the end.

"Really now..."

A voice sounded from the deepest depths of darkness; the surrounding room giving off a dreary sense of despair and power bathed in the brilliant glow of red-purple coming from the intricate looking design of runes floating in the air just as the center. The corners still maintaining their inky blackness, with the occasional movement or two stirring making the shadows themselves look alive.

"What good will calling out that silly little incantation of yours do for us now?" The voice continued, mockingly. "Surely they will shield him from our sights, hm?"

"Nonsense! I will go." A new, more powerful voice bellowed, the sound of heavy armor chinking in the distance echoing. "None can hide from Onyx, the great general of darkness!"

"Oh for the love-use your brain you oaf!" Another voice cut in, this one sounding more feminine and annoyed.

A strangled noise of outrage escaped Onyx. The shadows that confined him lurching forward as though to grab hold of the other and strangle her.

"You dare insult me, Verona!?"

The offending shadows grew in size, nearly overtaking the room and all but suffocating the other forcing him to retreat back for a moment. Neither side giving an inch.

Both the first voice and the figure standing near the runes rolled their eyes.

"Enough." The first voice spoke, commanding authority. "While it is unfortunate, the interference of that pesky little wizard has only delayed our plans, but I do wonder..."

The rune in the center of the room shifted, the purple bled to a more crimson colored glow, slowly turning. The slender individual standing before them speaking for the first time:

"This little plan of theirs to keep the key from falling into our hands why, the thought of just how terribly it might backfire on them resulting in that poor boy's heart being shattered-it makes for a wonderful prologue to the end wouldn't you agree?"

The shadows of the room grew and grew, extending out across the ceiling and along the marble floors.

"Sleep well O Spirited One, for when the smoke clears and all is lost, in my arms you will be-Keeper of estranged souls-while I rip your soul from you, piece by little piece."

The rays of the sun washed over Laxus' face bathing him in the warm afterglow of the morning.

Mustering a small smile despite last nights horrid chain of nightmares-I can't have Lucy worrying about me.-He resolved to keep it to himself from now on. Figuring some time exploring the town might do him some good. He left early making sure so as not to wake Lucy from her sleep.

With that done he set out down the street, hands tucked into his pockets drinking in the sights that were Magnolia. He was somewhat glad to finally have the chance to wander around a bit, not really doing much sightseeing since arriving, the three of them-himself, Lucy, Natsu-heading straight for the guild.

'If this is where I'll be living from now on, I may as well get used to it...'

All in all, the atmosphere of the bustling town was in a sense, refreshing. Everywhere he looked, for the majority of people there, it was nothing but smiles and friendly greetings-some directed at him even.-it gave off an unmistakable warmth somewhere deep inside of him, which left him pausing in the middle of a street wondering.

'Why do I...feel like I have been here already?' Stifling an oncoming headache, he felt his knees start to buckle once more. 'All these faces...their voices...they're different, and yet-'

"Gramps, gramps!"

A visage of a small young blonde boy racing by flashed through his mind.

"Why am I...?"He gasped suddenly, being snapped back into the real world when his hand hit against a pot while trying to keep himself steady, causing it to fall and shatter instantly on the ground.

Blinking at his own bout of clumsiness he lifted his eyes up reading the sign overhead aloud;"Floaroma aroma."He felt he could somehow squash down the guilt of breaking just one measly flower, but somehow the small act would lead to a lecture down the line, since he was pretty sure Lucy had a sixth sense over these kinds of things...

Back in their shared apartment, Lucy shifted in bed muttering in her sleep.

"Laxus...apologize..."She whispered turning onto her side burying her face into her fluffy soft pillow once again.

'This was a mistake.'He thought, unnerved. 'What...what is she even doing here?'

"Forgive me, I-…"

Even as she spoke, Laxus felt unnerved by her presence. His foot sliding back a few inches. Her eyes catching his, flitting to the flowers he had just been staring at.

"You like botany?"

"No."He spat out, eyes pinched into a glare frowning heavily at the amusement trickling into her tone.

The slight quirk of her lips immediately faded picking up on the hostility that lingered in his own voice and pondering over it. Her crimson eyes bore into him slowly traveling down to his feet and back up again, this causing him to blush a delicate shade of pink scowling openly.

"Just what the hell do you think you're doing?" He seethed, becoming increasingly frustrated with her.

"I can see the resemblance..." She finally said, her eyes lingering at his face."Especially the eyes; they're her eyes no doubt about it."

"W-what are you-…"He stopped, the words lodging somewhere in his throat, refusing to budge when confronted with those same crimson colored eyes. Her black hair was now tied loosely behind her back, still reaching the floor, but It now had a matching red going from the tips to a few inches up. Her skin was still pale like snow; she looked normal-ish but still...

"What am I? Well, that's rather rude to ask a lady now, isn't it?"

She knew it wasn't what he had originally wanted to know, but she just couldn't resist poking fun at him. He made it far too easy, and the way he would always get so flustered afterward brought a small reminiscent smile onto her face.

'They're so much alike...'she thought still staring.

"Y-...you never did answer my question before." Ignoring the small tremor in his voice, she rose a delicate, dark brow, feigning ignorance. Laxus ground his teeth out of frustration, she was quickly becoming more infuriating than back in his younger days Erik had one of his stupid 'house-broken' pets tagging along.

In an instant, gone was the ferocious looking scowl that suggested he was moments form attempting to shamelessly clobber her, and in it's place a look of...was it desperation? She mused silently, her crimson irises widening ever so slightly noting the way his shoulders seemed to tremble just a little.

"M-my past...please," He shook his head taking a small step forward"I don't care if you're an enemy or friend or whatever! I just-...I want to know already." His eyes momentarily fell to the floor, staring down at the wooden planks with his fists clenching and unclenching at his sides. "Who my parents were...if they were happy to have me...where I was even born...I don't know any of it. I don't even know-"He stopped, swallowing hard before continuing.

"Is my name...even really Laxus?"

The girls outer expression didn't change. It was something that made Laxus nervous; what if she refused to share anything with him? What if she really didn't know anything to begin?

"You said we met before?"He began, trying a different approach. "Were we...friends?"

Something hardened in the girls eyes, and just for a moment Laxus wondered if he said something wrong. They stood staring one another down-amber to crimson red-neither budging an inch.

Finally, just when Laxus was about to turn around and give up, her lips parted...

XxX

Laxus felt shaken when he walked through the front door. Unable to process all that was said to him.

Biting his lip he stayed leaning on the wooden frame of the door exhaling a shuddering breath. He closed his eyes and waited-waited for him to wake up and find this was all some terrible dream, he waited to hear the familiar yell of Lucy's annoyed voice whenever he overslept-speaking of...

"Look, we just moved in, Laxus isn't here and as I've already said we're not ready for guests. "Lucy said, her tone a bit cold and annoyed showing 1)she had just woken up not that long ago, and 2)someone, other than him for once, had done something to put her in a foul mood.

"Jeez, talk about cold-hearted..."Laxus blinked, recognizing Natsu's voice from somewhere inside the kitchen area. 'What's she doing here?'he thought, confused.

"Ice cold."Happy added, the cheeky little bastard smiling.

"Watch it cat!"Lucy snapped, already losing her patience when Natsu turned and saw Laxus walk in.

"Oh Laxus! There you are!"Natsu greeted warmly with a wave. "Me and Happy were just tellin Lucy what a nice place ya got!"

"No, they were just leaving!"Lucy retorted, growing a tick mark on her forehead.

A small bemused chuckle escaped him, earning a sharp sudden glare from his fellow blonde which he brushed off. "Jeez calm down Luce, It's not like they'll break anything while they're here-"

Lucy opened her mouth, about to say how they did in fact almost ruin the walls.

"-right?"Laxus finished, the lines under his eyes thickening like before, making Natsu and Happy gulp. Electricity crackled around him, looking just as menacing and terrifying as someone like Erza. They nodded quickly, a double 'Aye!' Serving as a satisfactory response.

With that out of the way Laxus flopped down onto his bed, only for Lucy to go off on him.

"Hey wait a second, what do you think you're doing!?" She yelled, snatching the covers off him ignoring the growl of frustration he gave. "You said we would go on a job together today, remember? In case you've forgotten we now have rent to pay!"

"Crap Luce, I didn't forget..."Laxus responded dully, stifling a yawn and further irritating his fellow blonde it seemed. "I just don't feel like dealing with it right now, so..."
