Why are people living?

It was a question Rhydian Morris always asked himself. Why were people living? Why was he living? There are more than 52 million people who lived in England – does his existence matter at all? It was scary, he thought, how small his existence was; how minute he was, living in a mass of so many people. If he died, will it change the world? If he disappeared, will it affect the lives of others?

"Rhydian!"

The voice jolts Rhydian from his deep thoughts and he takes his eyes away from staring down at the tiny people resembling ants as they go about the busy lives. He turned around and sees a girl, a schoolmate. He knew the girl. They're classmates. Maddy Smith.

There was nothing about Maddy Smith that was different from the normal but she never failed to catch Ryhdian's eyes. In their room, in the hallways, outside the school. She was cute but she wasn't particularly gorgeous to be a head turner. But she was one to him. She stood out to him. And he doesn't know why.

"Rhydian" Maddy repeats, tilting her head to the side and looking at him with curious eyes. "Class started. You were not in the room so…"

Did she look for him? He wondered but he knew he won't get an answer as the girl's voice trailed off. His aim was to hide, to keep away from the eyes of people. It was his reason for being at the rooftop. He didn't thought it would matter, didn't thought anyone would notice that he wasn't in class. But apparently, someone did. Someone who sat at the front row while he sat at the back.

There are more than 52 million people who lived in England; does his existence matter at all? If he died, will it change the world? If he disappeared, will it affect the lives of others? Out of the 1000 or so people in their school, what were the odds that Maddy Smith would be the one to look for him? Did his disappearance affect Maddy's life?

He had never been smart so he didn't know the answer to the questions his mind is conjured up. But Rhydian knew that out of the 52 million people who lived in England, the one who stood out to him was Maddy Smith.

Why was he living?

It's a question Rhydian always asked himself and maybe, he thought, Maddy could help him find (or can give him) an answer.
