Taste of Betrayal
You want to believe that there's one relationship in life that's beyond betrayal. A relationship that's beyond that kind of hurt. And there isn't. – Caleb Carr
The sword was pointing at Merlin's chest, held aloft by Arthur's gloved hand. Merlin stood frozen in place, thoughts warring in his head- the shock and fear of the moment having rendered him speechless.
The strained silence shattered when Arthur half sobbed. "Why can't I kill you?" His sword clattered to the floor, echoing loudly in the furnished room. He didn't cry, but his eyes spoke for him, and Arthur's pain allowed Merlin to find his feet. He took a hesitant step forward and placed a gentle hand on his king's shoulder. Arthur flinched away from his touch, and Merlin's hand dropped dejectedly to his side.
It took what seemed like an eternity, but Arthur's voice did not waver when he spoke again.
"Why can't I kill you?"
Merlin's eyes blazed fiercely as he spoke the words he had been longing to say for years. "Because, Arthur, you're wrong, and on some level, you know that. I would never hurt you- I've dedicated my life to saving you. Please, just listen to me. We've been through so much together Arthur; don't throw that all away now."
Arthur was silent for a long while and his heavy gaze roamed Merlin's face intently, but he finally jerked his head in what seemed like permission, and Merlin began, stumbling over his words in his haste. He spoke of ancient prophecies and ageless dragons. He told his king of a single man's loyalty and love, and how far he went to achieve peace and secure the welfare of a mighty kingdom. He spun tales of a future king and his warlock, ruling side by side as equals. He kept no secrets and told no lies, and in the end, Arthur understood.
"It won't be the same, will it Merlin?" he said softly, when his friend had fallen silent.
Merlin looked at him, and shook his head. "No Arthur. It won't."
Merlin grasped his hand, his eyes intense, and Arthur knew. It wouldn't be the same, but their friendship would survive, and that was all that mattered.
