Based on Season 2, Episode 17 "Heart"

Prompt: "We'll settle this the old fashioned way...Dean, always with the scissors" – Sam

Ever since childhood, the Winchester's arguments had been settled one of two ways – either scrummaging on the floor until one of them called mercy and they were dirty and bleeding, or the more refined, slightly less brutal battle of the Rock Paper Scissors.

And from a very young age Sam had learnt that Dean automatically, consistently; persistently chose scissors.

It meant Sam had always got the last Lucky Charms in the box, the bed nearest the window, the shortest shift on the night watch.

Knowing Dean always chose scissors meant Sam was able to manipulate him into Sam driving the Impala when he knew Dean was too pig headed to admit he needed a rest.

It had allowed Sam to give Dean his first birthday present since the death of Jess – Dean had, somewhat reluctantly, just sat there with his eyes closed waiting for Sam to present him with a new knife or whatever.

Sam had taken the opportunity to kiss him. And it was only Rock Paper Scissors that stopped Dean from walking out.

Some nights later they hadn't needed Rock Paper Scissors to decide which bed they fell into, but it had been Rock Paper Scissors that decided who got to top.

And after that first night Sam was mostly happy enough to switch roles and be the receiver – so to speak. But on the occasions where he changed his mind, Dean had no option but to lose. Sam knew Dean would always pick scissors.

What he didn't know was that Dean was aware of this and yet still chose scissors anyway.

How could he ever give Sam anything but what he wanted?
