Prologue

May 1998 - Demon Reality

Buffy looked out from the tower as the sun began to rise over the horizon. Below her and Dawn a portal had formed already formed from her sisters blood. She knew what she had to do. Death was her gift, after all. Buffy turned back to look at her sister and gave her a sad smile.

Dawn looked at Buffy and it dawned on her what Buffy intended to do. "Buffy ... no ..." Dawn said as tears began to flow down her face.

"Dawnie ... I have to –" said Buffy.

"NO!" Dawn practically shouted.

"Listen to me! There's no time, Dawn, please listen." Buffy said as she pulled her baby sister close to her so that she could whisper into Dawn's ear. "Dawn listen to me. Listen. I love you. I'll always love you. But this is the work I have to do. Tell Giles I ... I figured it out. And I'm okay. Give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now—you have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me."

"I will Buffy, and I love you," said Dawn as the tears flowed freely. She embraced her sister tightly not wanting to let her go, but knowing she had to. She took a step back as Buffy gave her a kiss on her forehead.

Buffy looked at Dawn as she burned into her memory the image of her sister's face. Then she turned and ran towards the end of the tower. Just then behind her a tendril of energy hit Dawn and she vanished in a flash of white light just as Buffy dove off the end of the platform.

Then time seemed to come to a standstill as two people appeared next to the diving Buffy. "The Key has come through the portal into the our reality," Ganos Lal said.

Oma Desala nodded. "Yes," she said as she pointed at Buffy. "She will need to continue to protect the Key."

"Then we need to send her through as well. But how will we integrate them into that world," Ganos Lal replied.

"We could send them to someone who could help to protect the Key. It would mean changing all memories including the Slayer and the Key's memories. Also changing their DNA to match their other protector, Samantha Carter to make them her daughter. I believe making them twins also would help protect the Key. That way the Slayer can go where the Key goes, such as at school. Maybe making them 10 years of age?" Oma Desala said.

"We must be careful though," said Ganos Lal. "Interference of this level in our reality could bring the Others."

"Agreed," said Oma Desala as they disappeared. Time resumed as Buffy fell down and into the portal. Everyone on the ground looked up when they had noticed the flash of light that signified Dawn's transference into the the other reality. They watch as Buffy fell into the portal and then disappeared in a flash of light.

Suddenly a woman appeared before them, dressed in pure white. Every single member of the Scooby gang recognized her instantly. "Mrs. Summers?" asked Willow.

"I'm only here for a moment," said Joyce. The Powers That Be wanted me to let you know that Buffy and Dawn are alright. They were approached by beings from another reality after Dawn had been hit by a tendril of energy sending her into their reality. They petitioned the Powers to send Buffy also so that she could continue to protect Dawn. I'm here now as both an emissary for the Powers with the beings from the other reality and a way for each of you too say goodbye before their memories are modified."

"Their memories are modified?" Giles asked as he wondered why that would happen.

"It has to do with being able to protect Dawn," said Joyce. "Their being inserted into a family in that reality, much as Dawn was inserted in to ours. Their memories will be changed along with many others to make them believe they have always been there. It is to help be able to protect Dawn."

Willow nodded and began to cry as Tara pulled her into an embrace. She held on to her lover tightly for a long moment. "Tell them we love them," said Willow, "and wish them luck. And that we miss them."

Joyce smiled and nodded. She closed her eyes and vanished in a flash of white light. The Powers had given her the ability to go between the realities, which normally would be something that was not allowed. Just as the Others did not allow any of their own to come into the Powers domain.

May 1998 Stargate Reality

Joyce appeared before Buffy and Dawn and found them in them sitting on a bed in Samantha Carter's home. "Hello, my darlings," she said.

Buffy looked up at Joyce her eyes wide. "Mom? Are we dead?" she asked.

Joyce shook her head. "No sweetheart, its not yours or Dawn's time to go to heaven. Just before you jumped Dawn was hit with a tendril of energy sending her into another reality. The Powers That Be were petitioned by beings from that reality to send you also, Buffy. So that you could continue to protect Dawn. Though there will be some changes."

Dawn looked at Buffy and then back at Joyce. "Changes?" she asked, not liking the sound of that.

Joyce nodded and even now she could see she didn't have much time. She could feel Oma Desala and Ganos Lal were hovering nearby and that they had to alter Buffy and Dawn's memories as well as make them younger before the Others found out. "Much as you Dawn were inserted into our lives. The two of you are being inserted into someone else's life in this reality. Your memories will be changed to believe you were always there. So will everyone else in that reality. Your DNA will be changed to match your new mother and you will be made younger than you are now, and twins. I'm almost out of time here. I love you both, and always will. Willow said to tell you that they all love you, wish you luck, and that they will miss you."

Joyce watched as Buffy and Dawn fell asleep on the bed and before her eyes they become younger and younger. She leaned over and kissed first Buffy and then Dawn's foreheads. "Goodbye my daughters, I love you." She turned and walked out of the room and into Samantha Carter's room and entered the womans dream.

"Sis?" asked Sam as she noticed Joyce.

Joyce smiled. "I'm not your sister," said Joyce. "I am the Joyce from another reality. I have a lot to tell you before you wake up and not much time in which to do it." She sat down next to Sam and told her about Buffy and Dawn. How Dawn had been given to her to protect. How Buffy was the Slayer and had been sent to help protect Dawn. She watched as Sam absorbed this information before silently nodding. And then she vanished so that she could silently and invisibly watch her daughters.

It was nearing dawn when Sam woke up and made her way in to her daughter's room. She looked at Buffy and Dawn. Her memories told her they were her daughters. But Joyce had said they had been sent to her to protect. She had promised Joyce she would do just that. She then moved into her office and began looking through the records she had kept for her daughters as she reached for her phone.

Two hours later Elizabeth "Buffy" Samantha Carter and Dawn Joyce Carter woke up to hear their mother telling them that it was time to get ready for school. They both hurriedly got dressed and ate the breakfast that their mother had prepared for them that morning. Samantha then drove the girls to school before heading into the SGC.

An hour later Sam sat across from Jack and next to Daniel and Teal'c in the briefing room that overlooked the Stargate. She looked over at General Hammond who sat at the head of the table.

"Major we're here now what was it you wished to talk about?" Hammond asked.

"I got a visit from my sister last night," said Sam.

"Joyce died a few months ago from cancer," said Hammond. His family had been close to the Carters since he and Jacob has served together years before. "That's why Buffy and Dawn moved back in with you, remember?"

"You would be correct, sir," said Sam. "At least that's what we all remember. Our memories say that I sent Buffy and Dawn to stay with Joyce and her husband, at the time, Hank. So that I wouldn't have to worry about them when I was on a mission. Then Joyce and Hank got divorced and Joyce died of cancer. So Hank sent them to me per Joyce's will. Except none of that happened, Well Joyce dying did happen. But the rest of it about Dawn and Buffy never happened."

"You're not making sense, Carter," said Jack as he looked at the assembled group.

"As I said Joyce came to me," said Sam. "Told me she wasn't my Joyce that she was a Joyce from another reality. At first I thought it was just a dream. I've had others where Joyce would be alive. But something told me it was more than just a dream and that what she was saying was true. She told me about Buffy and Dawn. How they were from her reality also and had been sent to me to protect. Seems neither of them are quite human. Buffy has superhuman abilities; such as speed, strength and healing abilities. And Dawn is, or was, a being of pure energy that was designed to open the doorway between realities. Much like the Quantum Mirror. That's how they came to be here. Someone in their reality opened the doorway to our reality. Joyce said Buffy was all set to sacrifice herself for Dawn to close that doorway. But Dawn had been hit with a tendril of energy from the portal and had gone through. So the Powers that Be, that's what Joyce called them, were petitioned by someone from our reality. Some sort of higher being. They had been petitioned to allow Buffy to come through as well so that she could continue to protect Dawn. They inserted them in to my life so I could help protect Dawn as well."

Teal'c looked at Sam and shook his head. "How can a 10 year old girl protect another 10 year old girl?" he asked.

"They weren't that age in their original reality, they were older than 10. Buffy was 20 and Dawn was 14. The reason their 10 years old now is to protect them. In fact to further protect them their DNA was changed, it's why they look like me. Joyce said they would not remember their old life, at least not yet."

"You said, not yet," said Daniel. "What do you mean?"

"Joyce said that eventually she may restore what was taken. Right now she wants to let Buffy and Dawn have as much of a normal childhood without that knowledge hanging over their heads. Anyways like all of us their memories were modified so they would believe they had always been here," said Sam as she continued.."If you do a DNA test you will find they are my daughters. If you do a search for birth records, school records, etc. you will find them. Shoot I looked through my files when I woke up this morning after Joyce's visit and found their birth certificates as well as some of their grade cards."

"I know this is a lot to take in. I only told you guys because if anyone finds out about them, they could be in danger. Just think what the NID or the Goa'uld could do if they had Dawn or Buffy. The Gou'ald would be unstoppable as they would have access to more armies than you could shake a fist at. Buffy's superhuman abilities would make her sought after by the Goa'uld as a host. And I am sure the NID would love to see how to duplicate those abilities as well," concluded Sam.

General Hammond looked thoughtful for a long moment before he nodded. "What do you want to do?" he asked, knowing something must be done to safe guard them if even half of what Sam had told them was true.

"First off I want to see if Janet will look after them while I am off world. Then with your approval I want to get them access to the base and on the Alpha Site list." Sam said.

Jack stood up, knocking his seat over. "What?" he asked, stunned at what Sam was asking.

"If their as important as Joyce said, they need to be protected," Sam said. "If the planet is in danger they need to be able to come to the base to be protected. And I'm not willing to risk what would happen to the Key if Dawn died. That means getting them on the Alpha Site list. It's all steps I want to take to protect them."

Hammond nodded in agreement. "I will see what I can do," he said. "I have a few favors I could probably pull in for this. I will go ahead and give you the paperwork now that way you can have them signed and ready to turn in. People what Major Carter has told us here does not leave this room. Consider this a classified matter. Dismissed."

Sam made her way out of the briefing room and toward the infirmary where she knew she would find Janet. "Hey Janet," she said as she walked through the door.

Janet looked up from her paperwork and nodded towards her friend. "Sam what a surprise I was just going to go to the cafeteria. Want to join me?"

Sam nodded before closing the door, "Janet what I am about to ask you to do and tell you about is classified you can't tell anyone, okay?"

"Of course, Sam," said Janet as she wondered what was so important that she had to be in the loop on it.

Sam sat down next to Janet and smiled at her friend. "You know I have two daughters, twins, right?" she asked as Janet nodded. "I was hoping you would do me the favor of watching over them when I am off world."

"Of course I would, you don't even have to ask." Janet replied.

Sam smiled and nodded, "Here comes the classified part okay." Sam said and then she went on to explain to Janet about Buffy and Dawn. When she had finished Janet was shocked and surprised.

Janet couldn't believe that the two girls she knew as Sam's daughters were in reality—not. "That's just …" she said.

Sam laughed and nodded. "I know it took me some getting used to when Joyce told me," she said. "I spent an hour this morning standing in the doorway to their room watching them sleep. Before I realized it didn't matter where they came from before. They are my daughters, my memories tell me that, and I love them."

Janet smiled and nodded. "I felt the same way, still do in fact, about Cassie when I adopted her."
