Korra collided with Asami. It was her fault, she was taking the turn to quickly. The past few days, she was constantly in a rush. Council members, Lin Bei Fong, the rest of the Metal Bending police all making plans and preparations. All anticipating Amon's final onslaught against them. Planning their last stand.
The water tribe girl reached up and rubbed her forehead, groaning slightly as she felt a lump grow. Opening one eye she saw the beauty across from her doing the same. The two girls hadn't exchanged any words since that day at the arena. Korra didn't know what to say to her. Asami didn't know either.
But the two of them looked at the red, swollen bump growing on each others head. Then they looked into each others eyes, and laughed.
And laughed.
And laughed.
Till the two where clutching their stomachs gasping for air. Asami had a hand on the hallway wall, trying to support herself. Korra gave up on standing and had dropped to her knees. They weren't sure why they were laughing so hard. The bumps where funny but not THAT funny, maybe it was just because the laughter felt right. Like it was needed.
As Korra whiped away a tear from her eye, she said in between chuckles, "I'm sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going!"
Asami tried to take a few breaths, burst of air and laughs pushing past her creamy lips. "It's fine. I should of paid attention to, I can usually hear you storming down the hall."
"Hey."
"It's true you clomp around worse than Naga I swear!" Asami said and Korra puffed out her cheeks in protest. The sight almost made the heiress lose her nearly gained composure. Korra had a smile on her face, as she looked Asami up and down.
"Hey at least I don't stop in every mirror to fix my hair!" Asami let out a shocked gasp and her had immediately flew to her hair. The action caused Korra to snort and that caused Asami to howl. The two girls desperately fought for their composure, both pushing themselves to their feet.
The atmosphere between them was light, and happy but behind it where to many words that needed to be said. To many things that needed to be explained. Korra's eyes glazed over her rival. Wait. Was that was she was. Perhaps, in her mind, she had made Asami out to be her rival before. For Mako's affection, for attention, appearance, and personality.
But that didn't feel so anymore. She felt closer to her than that. "Asami..." She said, and the Sato prepared herself. Asami figured that it had to be about Mako and it was a topic she would rather avoid. Even though she knew the two were meant for each other, it still hurt. It still broke her heart. "We'll get you your father back."
That had shocked her. Asami's eyes went wide as a strand of black hair fell in front of her face. She didn't know what to say as she stared at the Avatar. She was afraid that her voice would betray her; "You...You don't have to...He tried to kill you...he locked you in that room and..."
Korra shook her head, "I locked myself in that room...I let the darkness overwhelm me..." She told her, and took a step closer. "You believe that your father is a good man...sometimes...sometimes good people lose their direction..." Asami held her breath. "It's team Avatar's job to help them find it!"
Asami couldn't believe it. How? How after everything could she so easily forgive the man who made her go their a month of torment? She heard Korra's screams at night as she fought against invisible enemies in her dreams. She knew of her self imposed exile. How afraid of the light she became after a month of eternal darkness. How could she forgive so easily the man who caused it? Asami hadn't fully forgiven him for it, even if he was her father, her dear father who loved her so much it drove him mad.
"You're strong..." She whispered, her hands shaking as she tried to stop her tears. "I...I wish I was as strong as you..." It was Korra's turn to be shocked.
"Really. I always wished I was as strong as you!" She admitted, and she put a hand on the beauty's shoulder. They where so un-alike, yet so similar. Korra had never figured Asami to have the insecurities she did. Asami never thought Korra would have the doubts that she had. But, perhaps. That's what made them human.
To suffer, to worry, to carry guilt, and shoulder burdens to heavy for just them.
To hope, to forgive, to tease each other and laugh for hours about it.
That's what made them alive.
Asami threw her arms around the other girls body. She could feel her improperly healed bones, and could see the bruises on her dark skin. "I may not be able to bend anything..." She told her. "But I won't let you do this alone."
"Found you..."
"You always do..."
Korra looked up from her perch on top of a small boulder. A weak smile on her face as she stared into a pair of bright green orbs. Even in sadness, they sparkled. Like a glittering stone soaked in water from a fresh rainfall. Her dearest friend, her most adamant protector.
Bolin, gripped the rock and pulled himself up, sitting next to her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small wrapped candy. He held it out to her, but she didn't take it. So he unwrapped it and held it out again, this time holding it close to her nose. Korra inhaled. It smelled of chocolate and mint. She parted her lips slightly and the young man pushed it into her mouth.
Coughing, slightly she tried not to choke as she looked at him. He had that same smile on his face that he always had. The one that made her laugh, the one that made her feel safe. Turning his gaze from the dark skinned girl that held his heart he looked at the outline of Republic City.
"General Iroh will be here with reinforcements in two days..." He was relaying information to her. Korra had tried her best to attend all the strategy meetings that happened in the past week but it was hard. She wasn't a general. Or even a soldier. She a cleaning girl for the pro-bending arena. If war was as simple as scurbbing the floors she would of felt more comfortable.
"That's good..." She said, sucking in a deep breath through her teeth. "He'll know what to do...He's a great General right?" She asked, and Bolon hit her arm as if to insure her. They sat in silence for a while, before Korra sighed, "Do you think we'll make it?" It was an honest question. The infliction in her voice made it clear, she wanted honesty, not comfort.
Bolon sucked on his lower lip, his hands rubbing the smooth skin of the boulder beneath them. "I don't know..." he admitted. It was all he could say. This wasn't like pro-bending, there was no referee to stop the match. No rules, no arena, no out of bound areas. Everything was in play, everything was permitted and the anticipation made his heart race. When he was excited he was jittery, and he took comfort in knowing Korra was the same way.
Her hands played with her hair, her shirt, parka or stroked Naga's head. She was always doing something, never sitting still. Mako and Asami could do that. They could sit there calmly, listen without prejudice, but those two always had to keep moving forward. Like if they stopped, they where going to sink.
"Korra...!" Her name tasted bittersweet on his lips. He wished that he could say her name close to her, whisper it into his skin. He shook the thought away. She didn't belong to him. She belonged to Mako. They mixed perfectly together. Fire and water, creating a soothing steam, one that cleansed life. He forced his lips upward, as he looked at her, his face buried in his arms. His smile, faltered just a bit. "I have one thing to ask you though..."
Korra smiled at him. A soft warm smile. One that she didn't know she could do anymore. "Anything in the world Bolon..."
"I want to stay with you...always..." He said, straightening his shoulders. "No matter what happens...You, Me, Mako and Asami...the four of us together..." his voice wavered slightly.
"Is that it..."
"Just that..." He said and laughed towards the sky. "It's okay Korra...life...it really is that simple..."
She laughed out loud and Bolon loved the sound. It was warm and rich. Cool and fresh. Just like the chocolate that he gave her. Sweet with a hint of mint. He spoke his words before he even thought.
"I love you..." Bolon said, sheepishly gazing up at her and Korra felt her cheeks flush. Then guilt set in her stomach as a flash of fire ran through her body. "Before I even met you...I loved you..."
Her blue eyes met his green ones. If they blended together they would be a beautiful shade of teal. She wanted to say that she was sorry, but she felt it wasn't appropriate. "Bolon...I love you to..." She said, knowing that he knew she meant it. She reached out her hand and took his, squeezing it.
He squeezed back. It was a simple rejection, though the words didn't sound like it was one. His heart felt like it had stopped beating, but every squeeze they exchanged it was forced to beat. Bolon's eyes drifted back to the city. Even if everything went wrong. If they were seperated...if something happened, he knew, he would be alright.
Because their was no fear in love, and he knew. Despite the wild wind, and the long nights ahead. No matter wear this war would leave them, or where their lives took them. Even if Republic City was no more. She loved him. And with her, he always had a home. He laughed, and sighed;
"Well, at least the friendzone has chocolate."
There's something about the possibility of death that you makes you yearn for closure. You don't want to leave the world with any loose ends. You don't want to regret never saying I love you as many times as you should of. Not shedding the tears that should have been shed. Not laughing at the things that should of be laughed at.
And Korra thought to herself that she was lucky. Her fingers raked over the piece of parchment in her hand, the movement was nervous. It was the plan she had made with the council. She had to write it down, so she could read it over and over again. Slowly she folded it up and tucked it into her pocket.
She could never tell Mako about this plan.
Or Bolon.
Or Asami, or Tenzin, or Ikki, or Lin, Or Jinora...
As the list in her head grew a bittersweet smile enguled her face. So many people, so many reasons. And it was each one of them that Korra felt lucky. She had two days to tie up her loose ends.
She had two more days to laugh at Bolon's jokes and let Asami fix her hair.
Two more days to cry at Yin's grave and two more days to chase the air bender kids around.
Two more days to eat noodles with everyone and share a cup of tea with her teacher and friend, Tenzin.
And two more days to say I love you one more time.
