Quick Note: I edited chapter five. Nothing major, just a small change that makes this chapter even plausible, so if you want to go re-read, I highly approve.
With their glamours back on, Harry Potter and Sirius Black slowly made their way through the semi busy Gringotts bank, Griphook leading them to the tracks where a train cart is waiting for them. Both Harry and Sirius slowly get into the cart, Sirius with a low groan as he stretches his legs completely before it takes off. The twists and turns fly by as the cart picks up speed and Harry finds himself remaining quiet, staring at Sirius subconsciously, wondering how everything is going to change because of his actions. At one point, Harry is pretty sure he spots a flame shooting around one corner, and knowing what he knows, he lets out a small chuckle, causing Sirius to look at him with an arched eyebrow.
"I uh, I saw a dragon's fire," He responds with a shrug, feeling sheepish as his cheeks turn red. Sirius lets out a small laugh, shaking his head briefly with a snort before ruffling Harry's hair fondly. The two remain quiet for a few more moments before Sirius turns towards Harry fully and gives him a look. The look he receives has always been a look that's caused Harry's insides to squirm, and he knows it's because Sirius will tell him he's disappointed in him about something. Almost like Sirius knows what he's thinking, Sirius lets out a soft sigh and kisses the top of Harry's forehead.
"I'm not disappointed in you, pup," Sirius states quietly, looking at Griphook briefly, who is giving them the privacy they definitely need. "While it was definitely bad-ass, to see you steal from Gringotts and manage to escape on the back of a damn dragon, there were also other things you could have done if you had known about them. For that, I definitely blame myself." Sirius pauses here and Harry finds himself looking at his godfather with a frown, not understanding why Sirius would blame himself for something that was Harry's choice, in the end. "In a way, being sent back in time alongside you is also a chance for me. A chance to be the proper godfather I should have been." He finishes, causing Harry to open his mouth to tell Sirius that he was a good godfather, great even, for the short two years he was around. One look from Sirius though has Harry closing his mouth shut with a snap and looking down as his cheeks turn red before the cart comes to a sudden stop.
Harry slowly begins to get out of the cart, Sirius helping him once he's out by grabbing his arm and when Harry is finally back onto two feet he lets out a sigh and looks at Griphook as the goblin opens his vault. As the door opens with a loud clang, Harry looks at Sirius with a small smile before stepping forward, eyes widening when he sees how different the vault is from when he went there in his first year. His mouth dropped open in surprise once more and Harry heard Sirius chuckle before he turned to offer a light glare towards his godfather.
"Why is it so different?" He asks Griphook, noticing the grin on the goblin's face with a sigh. He waits patiently for an answer as Griphook looks at him with curiosity apparent on his face before he turns towards Sirius when he hears his godfather cough.
"I believe it looks so different because of the fact that this isn't your trust vault, kiddo," Sirius responds lightly, a small smirk on his face. Harry sticks his tongue out as a joke before looking around with wide-eyes.
"So, what is this then?" He asks, stepping forward.
"It's the actual Potter vault, Mr. Potter," Griphook responds, stepping backwards as Harry continues to step forwards alongside Sirius.
"There's an actual Potter Vault?" Harry asks with surprise, looking towards Sirius while stepping back, unsure of what to do next. Noticing this, Sirius kneels in front of him and rests his hands on Harry's neck and cheek, similar to the position he took when Harry rescued him from the Dementors kiss.
"Harry. This is the actual Potter vault. Inside will be all of the money your parents earned or were awarded, alongside the money their parents earned or were awarded, alongside the parents of those parents. It goes on and on. Not only that, but there will be important Potter artefacts, books, jewels, and paintings." Sirius begins with a sad smile.
"Essentially, pup, this is the one place you can go to – where you should go to – to learn about your family," Sirius adds, squeezing Harry's one shoulder before standing up. "Now, are you ready?" He asks and Harry finds himself squaring his shoulders and nodding, stepping forward once more.
" ," Griphook interrupts and Harry turns towards him as his face frowns into confusion.
"I'm going to be remaining out here for the time being, as I'm unable to step into the vault of other nobles. When you're done and ready to leave, just let me know." He finishes as Harry nods with a smile.
Moments later, Harry finds himself inside of his vault eyes widening as he takes in the piles of galleons, sickles and knuts. Looking around, he can't help but notice the stack of books against one wall, what he assumed were portraits against another wall, and numerous trunks spread throughout the middle, meeting in a large oval in front of him. The room seemed to go on forever and Harry found himself spinning in a circle once he was far enough to see that it was indeed, quite a large room.
"Woah." He finds himself whispering as he continues to walk in a circle, grinning as Sirius comes up behind him and places his hand on his shoulder.
"Woah, indeed," Sirius chuckles before stepping backwards and looking around the room. Harry follows his gaze and finds himself tilting his head as an errant thought flows through his memory.
"Sirius?" He asks and as his godfather looks at him, Harry finds himself biting his bottom lip briefly. "Did my parents ever have a will?" He finishes and he notices Sirius step closer to him with a nod of his head.
"As far as I know, the last time James and Lily updated their will was the day we switched secret keepers," Sirius states before frowning. "I imagine it was to add in the fact that I was no longer their secret keeper."
"So then –"
"I have no idea," Sirius interrupts with a frown, crossing his arms. "It should've been read when you turned eleven. It would have been read beforehand, but it would have also been read with you involved when you came to Gringotts for the first time." Sirius finishes, making his way out of the vault and going to Griphook. Harry doesn't hear what Sirius and Griphook are discussing but shortly after, Sirius is back and quickly writing something down before grinning at him.
"We'll read the will tomorrow after we go through the blocks on you," Sirius responds quietly and Harry nods, biting his lip as nerves run through his body. The two of them remain quiet for a few more minutes, walking in separate directions before Harry ends up at one of the portraits, slowly turning around one of them and blinking in surprise.
"Sirius!" He shouts while leaning the portrait back and stepping away from it, still clearly surprised. He hears Sirius come up from behind him and watches the other man's reactions.
"Well, looks like we can get our answers a lot sooner than we thought," Sirius responds quietly with a grim smile on his face.
She watches the scene curiously, wondering why she's back with the two twins but not truly minding it either. They remind her so much of her husband and his brother in everything but blood, that she can't help but enjoy the antics of the twins. In front of her, the two young teenagers are scouring through books, writing things down that they apparently think are important for their cause.
She finds herself smiling softly, stepping closer to the two teenagers before her smile slides off of her face and her eyes narrow at the man in front of her. He still doesn't see her, and that's a good thing, but she knows by the way the twins bodies become tense and rigid that they do see him – and they're not exactly calm about their thoughts on what might happen now.
Watching with interest, her eyes narrow more as the man raises his wand and his lips form into a smirk. The damn rat of a man might have begun to destroy her son's life, and Sirius', even, in the original timeline, but she'd be damned if she let him destroy it again.
She steps closer to the twins and Pettigrew and snarls quietly as he begins to open his mouth and say a spell. She has no doubt that it'll be obliviate, because like Lockhart in the original timeline, it was the only thing Pettigrew was good at, spell-wise. But before he can even say the beginnings of the spell, she makes her way behind him, thankful for the fact that being dead allows her to have a faster speed than normal and with a quick look around, takes her own wand out and throws a spell at the rat, knocking him unconscious for the time being.
Slowly becoming exhausted, not used to exerting so much energy, she knows she has to get back to her portrait – she can even feel it thrumming for her. However, the moment she looks up, she finds her mouth dropping in surprise, for the two twin teenagers are staring at her with their own mouths opened, and, with a surge of pride running through her as she notices, their wands pointed at her chest.
Not like it'd do much to her, really, she chuckles lightly. She crosses her arms in front of her and arches an eyebrow, stepping back with a small smile.
"Well, are you going to say anything, or just continue to stare at me like you've seen a ghost?" She asks with a smirk on her face that was very reminiscent of her husband's. The twins look at one another before looking back at her with a grin.
"Well, we've technically seen a ghost," One of them responds, crossing his legs in front of him. He looks like he's ready to be told a story – looks like a young child, despite the fact that he's thirteen. She finds herself smiling once more, a truly genuine one this time, before she sits down in front of them.
"What would you like to know?" She asks them, watching the two of them communicate with one another silently, a pang in her heart as she thinks about how much they're like James and Sirius. She can only hope that their lives change for the better; that one of them doesn't die in this timeline, either.
"Who was that man?" One of them asks, and she looks down at Pettigrew, her upper lip curling before she takes a deep breath and then exhales, releasing all of the tension in her body.
"His name is Peter Pettigrew." She responds as her fists clench at her sides. They look at one another, triumph clear in their faces, before they look back at her.
"We knew it!" They exclaim and she lets out another laugh, shaking her head briefly.
"Well, what else would you boys like to know?" She repeats and then has to strain to pay attention as both of the twins rain down question upon question for her. Blinking, she holds her hands up and whistles, arching an eyebrow as the two shut their mouths with a snap.
"What was his animagus form?" The one – she thinks it's Fred, whispers with a sad look on his face and she sighs quietly.
"Peter's animagus form was a rat. It should have been obvious, but, he was their best friend. He was family," She responds just as sadly as Fred feels. She shakes her head, shaking off the emotions she feels before looking at them once more.
"The Marauders included James, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. They were best friends growing up and when they learned that Remus was a bitten werewolf, they became animagi so he wouldn't have to spend the full-moons alone. The nickname came before then, though, since they were pranking long before they learned the truth." She adds on. "We knew that a lot of people thought Sirius was still the secret keeper, so it was something we added into our wills at the last moment. Albus knew…" She pauses here, turning her head away angrily as the eyes of the twins widen in surprise.
"In the end, boys, there was a lot of things that have changed." She whispers, looking down before frowning at the feel of a pull in her chest.
"I feel—" She begins before taking a deep breath and disappearing from where she was sitting, causing Fred and George to look around in confusion.
"Wonder where she went," They ask
Sirius and Harry stared at the portrait in surprise, before Sirius' face broke out into a small smile. He looks over at his godson and lets out a soft chuckle, briefly hearing the voice inside of the portrait calling for his wife. He's watching Harry when the woman appears inside of the portrait, and so he sees his godson's eyes blink in surprise before he looks down in shyness.
"Harry," He smiles, hand on Harry's shoulders, "These are your parents," He grins, chuckling softly when Harry rolls his eyes at him with a smirk.
"Ah, so that's what he looks like when he's smirking," James chuckles from inside the portrait and Sirius watches as Harry looks at his dad with another nervous glance.
"So, this is…" Harry begins and Sirius chuckles softly before moving the portrait and hooking it on the wall, where there's a space available.
"So, you managed to make yourselves a portrait?" He asks and James nods, wrapping his arm around Lily's shoulders. Lily, who has remained silent, watching her son sadly.
"Well, it's quite simple – we were worried that we would end up dying and, if we did, we wanted to be able to interact with all of you." James responds, frowning at his wife before hugging her. "I just grabbed Lily from wherever she was. She's been leaving the portrait lately, watching someone." He adds.
"I visit the Weasley Twins," She says with a small smile. "The twins, who are full of trouble when it comes to one rat," She finishes with a sigh. Sirius notices James frowning at her and he arches an eyebrow, shaking his head briefly.
"What's Peter been doing?" James questions and Lily scowls.
"Well, it appears that Dumbledore has given Molly a few of our books, one of them being the Marauder's Journal, " She begins, smirking once James and Sirius both scowl before continuing, "Fred and George overheard something Molly say and began to look into things. When they got close to finding out the truth, Pettigrew attempted to harm them." She finishes, shifting uneasily with a frown.
"We can't trust Molly, or Dumbledore. But we can trust the twins. They made a blood oath to protect Harry." She smiles at that, looking towards James with bright eyes before turning back towards him and Sirius chuckles, trying not to think about the fact that Pettigrew is being a horrible pain in his ass once again.
"What did they do?" Harry asks quietly and Sirius brings his godson closer to him, hugging him with one arm in order to give him some order of comfort. If there was one thing that Sirius never liked, it was the clear manipulation his godson was being put through by Albus and Molly.
In fact, he had a few ideas about his own death, but that was for another time. Instead, he focuses on James and Lily, arches an eyebrow at their silent communication, unable to help the fact that he definitely missed that.
"They were manipulating you, Harry," James sighs sadly, shaking his head. "In the original timeline –"
"I know about that!" Harry snaps and Sirius squeezes his shoulder, showing that he's there for him even if he doesn't agree with Harry snapping at his parents. James is quiet for a moment and Lily has her lips pursed before they both let out a sigh, knowing that their son would've been told when he was in kings cross.
There's silence for a while, Sirius noticing Harry shifting on his feet uncomfortably and he lets out a breath, pinching the bridge of his nose before kneeling down so he was level with his godson. "What is it you want to know, pup? What is it you're not saying?" He asks, looking at Harry with a frown on his face, brushing his godson's hair out of his face. He watches as Harry let's out a breath, looking away as his face fills with insecurities.
"Well, I guess I just can't…"Harry begins before sitting on the ground and bringing his knees up to his chest before continuing, "I just can't believe that everything we went through together was all a lie." He mumbles, hiding his face as Sirius grimaces and combs his fingers through Harry's hair.
"It's the worst feeling in the world," James whispers sadly, squeezing his wife's hand as she cries quietly. The silence comes back and it isn't until another fifteen minutes pass that Harry looks up, wiping the tears away from his eyes.
"I s'pose, I would like to know if you guys have any plans for me?" He asks, looking towards Sirius briefly, noting the smile.
"Well, we definitely think that you should remain in contact with all of us." Lily responds with a smile. "Inside one of the trunks – James', I believe – is a miniature painting of us. We'll be able to communicate with you and Sirius through that." She finishes, biting on her lower lip. "Then of course, there are the mirrors that Sirius and James made as teenagers." She trails off here, looking at Sirius hesitantly as he frowns.
"I think they might be hidden somewhere in my room at Grimmauld." He responds hesitantly.
"I can make it appear here, since I have my own version in my trunk, so you won't have to visit the place, Padfoot." James whispers, knowing how much his best friend hated his childhood home.
"As appreciated as that is Prongs, it's currently where we're hiding out." Siruis chuckles while James sticks his tongue out at his friend.
"As for your friend, Hermione – she's more intelligent then you gave her credit for in the original timeline. Leave clues and tell her as much of the truth as you can, and she'll be able to figure out that Dumbledore isn't to be trusted and that there's something wrong with her." Lily adds, frowning briefly.
"And let's not forget Neville. Get Neville away from his Augustus. She loves him, but she's just as abusive as the Dursley's," James scowls, shaking his head and crossing his arms. "Frank and Alice are actually not insane. Dumbledore is keeping them under a stasis charm so they don't get better. It's why Alice recognized Neville in your fifth year." James adds, tilting his head, thinking through what else he could add.
"Fred and George are clearly helpful. Blaise Zabini isn't nearly as bad, as long as you show your respect to him." James pauses here, sighing before grimacing.
"Malfoy – Malfoy can be changed, but whether or not you want to change him is up to you. Severus—" James snarls here and Lily growls, shaking her own head with fury in her eyes.
"Not to be trusted, clearly," Sirius scoffs while the other's nod in agreement.
"And Hagrid?" Sirius asks, biting his lip as James and Lily frown.
"He's trusting for some things, but not. Albus is very manipulative with Hagrid, so you have to be careful with anything you say to him," James sighs with a frown.
"What else is in the trunk?" Harry asks quietly, cheeks turning red when all eyes turn towards him, ignoring the small chuckle that escapes from Sirius' mouth.
"Well, in my trunk, there are my school books, journals, some mementos from my parents." James begins wistfully before continuing, "There's also photographs and spell books – a lot of different things that you'll have to look through. Sirius can help you with anything inside of it." He finishes.
"And in my trunk – well, photo albums of my muggle life and witch life, things from my parents and friends," Lily states, turning sad at the mention of her parents before continuing, "Potion and Spell journals, since I loved working on things, actual journals of my school years, and other things." Lily states with a frown. "If you need any help, Sirius could provide most of it, but if he cannot, then Remus should work." She adds before sighing, "And if you manage to wake up Frank and Alice, Alice could definitely help, since we were best friends." Lily finishes.
"You guys should probably get going." James whispers sadly while Sirius and Harry frown before shaking their heads. They still have more they want to talk about.
"No, you guys really should go. Shrink the trunks, take some moneys and make your way out of the vault. We would rather talk to you in a more comfortable setting, answer all of your questions then, you know?" James states, staring at Sirius with a look on his face that had Sirius sighing.
"Alright, I s'pose that we can do that." Sirius states while standing up from his kneeling position and holding his hand out for his godson, helping him stand up completely. He turns towards James and Lily feeling sad at leaving them as Harry shrinks the trunks Lily is pointing him towards.
"It won't be too long, Pads." James smiles sadly, pressing his hand against the portrait.
"I know. But I miss you, Prongs." He whispers back, stepping close.
"Yeah, but now you have a second chance. A chance to be there for Harry the way we all wanted you to be there for him." James says and Sirius finds himself nodding.
"I shall see you soon, brother!" Sirius whispers as Harry comes up to him and hands him one of the trunks and some gold. He smiles at Lily before the duo turn around, heading back towards the cart outside.
The ride back is quick and it goes by fast for the two of them. They say their goodbyes to Griphook, bowing respectfully and making their way to the front doors, Sirius spelling his glamours back on as Harry was too exhausted to do his own.
Distracted as they were, they apologized quickly when they bumped into numerous different people, letting out a small 'oof' when Harry bumps into a rather tall –
"Oh." He whispers, eyes wide as Sirius pulls Harry away quickly, eyeing Hagrid to see if Hagrid recognizes either of them, not noticing the man with the turban scuttling away.
It was later in the day when Hagrid was finally able to make his way to Albus Dumbledore's office, fingers playing with one another nervously. He never liked disappointing the much older man, not since Albus kept him around after his expulsion from Hogwarts. While he had the object Albus had wanted him to find, he knew that the older man was disappointed in Hagrid not being able to have the young Potter lad by his side.
Knocking on the door, he waited for it to open before stepping in, smiling at the headmaster and putting the package down on the large desk.
"'Ere you go, sir." He states with a smile, sitting in the chair that Albus points to.
"Hagrid, thank you. This means so much to me," Albus grins, grabbing the package and caressing it's wrapping before putting it away into a safe area. "Is there any news you'd like to share with me?" Albus asks, looking into Hagrid's eyes as he squirms.
Hagrid always felt weird when Albus looked at him like that, like Albus was reading into his soul. Even weirder was how he felt after, like he wanted to bare his soul to the man, even with the feeling that whatever Hagrid said, the headmaster already knew it anyways.
"I saw 'Arry today, 'Eadmaster," Hagrid grins and Albus grins back, humming happily.
"Did you see who he was with, Hagrid?" Albus asks, his eyes twinkling despite Hagrid shaking his head sadly.
"Someone with brown 'air is all I saw. Almost thought it'd been Remus Lupin, but," Hagrid finishes sadly, and Albus nods his head.
"Thank you, Hagrid, you may go now," Albus states. Hagrid nods while quickly standing up carefully and making his way out of the room, not knowing about Albus' plans for the upcoming year.
Author's Note: I am sorry for the long wait with this chapter. I've been working on this all week, since I was in a mood to write for this. Admittedly, I'm in a writing mood in general, so expect more frequent updates with this story, and possibly new oneshots in regards to Sirius and Harry.
A quick note – I want to say that right now, I'm only going to be focusing on this story. I was naïve to think that I could work on four different stories at once, and since I have muse for this story, and most of it already planned out anyways, this is the one I'm going to be focusing on. Now, that does not mean that I'm abandoning all of my other stories. Y'all should know by now that I don't do that, so please don't worry about any of those. If I somehow end up with muse for them, y'all will know.
Don't be afraid to ask me questions, both on here and in private message. I'll try to respond to everyone as soon as I can. I hope you enjoyed reading this chapter, and thank you for your time
