Damon gazed at the window as the scenery began to take shape into something he thought he would never see again. He was home.
He quietly chuckled to himself at the irony of it. Between running rampant throughout the major cities of the world and being daggered by his sister, Mystic Falls was the last thing on his mind.
"Glad to be home, brother?" Caroline asked, breaking Damon's train of thought.
He shook his head no, opting to refrain from participating in the conversation.
"The silent treatment? Seriously?" she asked, irritated.
Damon only continued to stare at the foliage unfolding outside the moving vehicle. If he was to be subjected to being trapped for hours on end with his infuriating sister, she might as well suffer along with him. He knew that Caroline hated nothing more than to be ignored.
She huffed at his non-response and rolled her eyes in his direction.
He smirked, silently rejoicing that he was still capable of getting under her skin.
"I miss Stefan. He would never give me the silent treatment." she said, as she slumped over her seat.
At the mention of their brother, Damon's smirk faded and he stilled before turning towards Caroline. She's looking at him with a mischievous glint in her eye and he knows then that he fell right into her trap.
She grins at him knowing that she had him exactly where she wanted.
With a resigned sigh, he gives in. "And where pray tell is Mr. Perfect? On one of your dastardly missions? Or off rampant in a college somewhere draining sorority girls dry?"
"He'll be joining us soon enough. We aren't on good terms as of now." was her cryptic reply. Her grin now turned into a half smile.
He looked at her confused by her reply. The absence of Stefan was peculiar, but wasn't uncommon. They had their occasional fights between siblings over the past few centuries but had always sought out each other in the end. It was Always and Forever after all.
Throughout the ages, Stefan had been glad to step into the role of Caroline's right hand mercenary. The role he seemed to be being forced to take on now.
"Before we reconvene as a family, I'd like to settle a few things first." she said, as the car slowed down on a winding path.
His attention was yet again drawn by the surroundings outside. An old white Victorian house has now dominated the view.
"Why are we here, Caroline?" he asked, as they stayed inside the parked vehicle.
"I told you. There's a doppelganger to be sacrificed and a curse to be broken." she said, as she flashed him a million dollar smile.
"But that's impossible."
Caroline merely smiled once more. "In this world, nothing is. Remember that. But enough of that. I thought that since I was being a forgiving little sister, I might as well reacquaint you with your friends."
Damon frowned. "I don't have friends." He said, as the door of the vehicle swung open.
"And here I thought you'd be happy to see me"
Damon stared at the figure and the grin fought its way to his face. He immediately stepped out to greet the man outside.
"You little shit! You were alive all this time and you didn't even try to undagger me once? We're not friends, you jackass."
The man in question only snickered in response.
Caroline stepped out of the vehicle and watched as the scene unfolded in front of her.
"Damon gets a welcome and I don't? I feel a little neglected." she stated, as she crossed her arms across her chest.
The dark-haired man smiled charmingly before flashing in front of her. He stopped inches short from Caroline's face, eliciting a smile from the blonde.
"Hello, gorgeous. I missed you. Terribly. I promise to make up for my lack of a proper greeting when I get you alone later." He said, as he kissed her chastely on the lips.
She smiled at his actions and shifted her attention to Damon, who was growing impatient.
"I missed you too, Enzo. But I can't help but feel someone else is now feeling neglected. I'll leave you two to it. Besides, I have plans tonight that don't involve bromance." She said, as she headed towards the house.
As Caroline shut the heavy double doors behind her, Enzo turned towards his best mate and grinned.
"Now that you're back to the land of the living undead, how about you and I bond over a good ol' sorority party? I'll even let you have first pick. What do you say?"
For the first time since he got undaggered, Damon found himself laughing. "I'd say that's the best thing I've heard so far. What the hell are you waiting for, Lorenzo?"
Damon found it hard to drown out the loud music blaring from the speakers along with the constant ringing in his ears.
He tried to focus his gaze on the man seated across from him but the blood-induced intoxication proved to be affecting him more than he originally intended. He squinted as his vampire senses began to slowly regain their strength as the blurred figures took on more concrete shapes. He nudged the dead college girl off his lap as he tried to maneuver across the living room, taking extra care to avoid getting blood on his shoes.
"Wake up, sunshine." he said, as he slapped Enzo's face repeatedly.
"Leave me alone, Damon. The point of a blood-induced stupor is to wallow in it." he said, as he turned away from Damon.
"Don't be such an old man, Lorenzo. Let's go"
"And pray tell, where is it that we're going?" Enzo grumbled as he slowly turned towards Damon.
Damon flashed his signature smirk and said, "We've got a doppelganger to track down."
At that, Enzo sat up slightly straighter and raised a curious eyebrow at his friend. "You mess this up again and you'll never wake up from your next eternal sleep care of that pesky little dagger your sister just loves to stab you in the heart with"
"Tsk tsk. Keep talking like that and I'll start to think you care"
Enzo sighed and leaned forward. "You were asleep for a long time, Damon. You cannot even begin to imagine the atrocities your sister has done in order to find that girl. Unspeakable things. Even for a despicable man like me" he said.
"So you have been keeping tabs on my sister all this time"
The younger man nodded gravely. "It's easy to sleep with one eye open when you know where the monster is at all times".
Damon carefully took in the fragile state of his friend in front of him. "Do you know where Stefan is? I need to talk to him".
Enzo laughed humorlessly as he stared at Damon. "Stefan has been daggered. Why did you think you were awakened? Didn't you find it odd that Stefan was missing? Now that the new doppelganger has been found?"
"What did the perfect brother do to deserve a dagger to the heart?"
"I don't know. I only know Stefan is daggered because Caroline asked me to help haul the coffins. I saw you. And I saw him as well. And before you berate me once more for not waking you, may I remind you that your sister is a mercurial and powerful little girl who wouldn't hesitate to rip my head off if she knew I was even considering it"
"She would though. Hesitate to kill you, I mean. She asked you to haul the coffins for Christ's sake. She trusts you enough to do that at least".
Enzo shook his head and said, "She knows I'm in love with her, and she continues to use that against me every single time. I let her because it's better to sleep with a devil you know than with one you don't".
"And I thought you were sleeping with me because of my prowess in bed" a lilting voice said, joining the conversation.
Both vampires froze momentarily before directing their gaze at the blond standing at the entryway.
Caroline smiled at their obvious discomfort and slowly made her way to them.
"Less than 24 hours since you've been undaggered and you're already itching to track down your precious Katherine lookalike. Looking forward to getting stabbed in the heart by this one?" she said, as she mockingly tilted her head at Damon.
"I'll leave the stabbing to you. You're the one crafty with the dagger" he bit back.
"And that is my cue to leave you two before anyone gets stab in the heart. Considering I'm the only one who would actually die in the event of a wooden stake in the heart" Enzo said, as he stood up from the arm chair.
Caroline smiled at Enzo and turned towards Damon. "Well, it doesn't take a wooden stake".
Before Damon could react, Enzo was already slumped forward on his knees with his head resting separately on the carpet.
Caroline tsked at the sight as she licked the blood off her hands.
"Love is a weakness. Remember that, brother".
Author's note: Enzo made his appearance! Aaaand now he's dead. I had plans for him but someone had to be set as an example. Ooops.
