Mark Sloan was startled in his hospital bed. He could have sworn he had just been talking to Webber and closed his eyes – blinked, really – and then felt his old friend Derek's hand sadly upon his shoulder, with Callie weeping nearby. He didn't understand what was going on.
Mark could see his coworkers sitting outside his room. He was sitting up in his bed, wondering if they were playing a practical joke on him as he waved his hand near Derek's face. He quietly swore and looked around the room.
"This isn't freakin' April Fools' Day now, is it guys?" Mark raised his voice, feeling a little anxious now. Everyone else was stoic, looking sad, past him, towards the bed.
Mark staggered out of his bed. He scratched the back of his neck, muttering he must be in a dream or on heavy drugs. He was about to try to flag down Webber when he heard someone gently laughing.
Mark's eyes widened. Lexie was leaning in the open doorway, her hands folded against her chest. It was as if the plane crash had never existed for her. Her long auburn hair draped over her shoulders in the way that he liked it.
She smiled at him, cupping her hands behind her back as she playfully strolled up to him. "I've been waiting for you."
Mark turned back towards the bed and finally noticed what everyone else was staring at: his comatose body.
He turned back towards Lexie, seemingly almost afraid now. "Lexie-" He stammered, reaching for her from across the room.
Lexie gently nodded as she wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned her head into his chest. They both watched the members of their hospital family grieve as the life support machines gave off a steady whine, informing everyone that Mark Sloan's heart had finally stopped.
Mark swallowed hard, glancing at his two best friends crying. He felt Lexie's hand rest against his cheek as she turned his attention back to her. "They'll be okay, Mark," she nodded with a wise, knowing expression in her eyes. "They all have each other here."
Lexie gently kissed him on the lips. "It's time to go."
Mark was beginning to relax as his mind was opened to new worlds and ideas. Time on earth was almost nonsensical compared to what was waiting for him and Lexie. Mark draped his arm around Lexie's waist, holding her close to him as they departed the hospital together and faded away.
