A/N: Don't worry, he'll have a chance to show off his wings…soon. I managed to read the reviews that were kindly left over the past 2 years. To those curious about pairings, I won't reveal it until later. I will try to average around 2500-3000 words per chapter for now and I'll actually attempt to edit what I write~
Standing far away at the top of the city wall stood the third hokage. With a sharp eyesight, he was able to see a small youth dancing around with a sword in each of his hands. He recognised the youth. It was the one who came into the village three years ago. He concentrated his chakra in his eyes to look at the finer details of Kirito's swordplay. If the coordination between the swords wasn't enough to surprise him, then the pair of wings on Kirito's back was definitely the cause of his jaw to drop to the ground. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. A mere youth, who did not graduate from the academy yet, was able to have such deep understanding in the way of the sword. Moreover, what in the world were those wings behind his back? The kid wasn't flying, but it certainly did not look like it was there for decoration. 'It seems that Konohagakaru has once again produced another genius. Then again, I am also a genius for allowing such talents into the village.'
Back at the training ground, Kirito was covered in sweat. The Stellar Wings enabled him to increase his agility into a new realm. But in return, his chakra consumption was drained at a significant rate. With a sigh, he ended his ability and sat down to rest. Although he made massive improvements, if he were to take it into battle, it would not fare well against an opponent at all. He didn't have the chakra capacity to make his jutsu last more than three minutes! Increasing chakra capacity was not something that can be done in the short term, so chakra manipulation was the way to go. Kirito was thankful that Iruka sensei taught him some basic ways to practice chakra control, but the methods to practice were just too slow.
He really wanted to learn medical ninjutsu to only improve his chakra control, but not to save lives. This thought alone made him feel guilty and prevented him from going back to the hospital to pursue the medical arts for the time being.
Another six months went by in a flash. Kirito was now able to walk, run, and lie down on a river. While lying down, the water would move under him, but his body would remain in the same position. This improvement allowed his Stellar Wings to last for ten minutes. Afterwards, he would be left exhausted. Thankfully, recovering his chakra only took three hours.
Three years had gone by ever since he came into this world. Every day he would train diligently and would often play with Naruto. But now he felt like he reached a bottleneck in his strength. He found it hard to improve his Stellar Wings and his technique in the sword reached near perfection. Thinking deeply to himself, he decided it was time to practice taijutsu. It would allow him to increase his stamina and his speed. But there was only one problem. He lacked a good teacher.
There was no way Kirito would go to Iruka sensei for advice in regards to training methods. Although Iruka sensei did teach him a training technique to improve his chakra control, it turns out it was very slow. If Iruka sensei knew that Kirito thought his training speed was slow, he would've coughed out blood in anger. It took Iruka years to be able to freely walk on a river. After 'walking on a river', Iruka sensei told Kirito that was the end of it.
Kirito headed towards the library. The library had several floors. The bottom floor was the largest and it welcomed everyone from tourists to normal villagers. Going up to the second floor required one to be at least a ninja in training. There were many floors above that, but they were restricted until one's strength reached a certain level.
Entering the library, Kirito immediately walked up to the second floor. There were no guards. There was just an invisible wall which separated the first and second floor. One had to input their chakra against it in order to pass through the wall. Higher floors had higher restrictions. The village wasn't concerned if spies from other villages got a hold of some books on the second floor.
It didn't take long for Kirito to find what he was looking for. He picked up the book "Basic taijutsu 101" and sat down at a nearby desk and began to read.
Time passed.
An hour later, Kirito was woken up by a book on his head. It turns out he fell asleep after the flipping the first page.
"Excuse me, you're making too much noise when you sleep," a voice giggled from behind.
Kirito turned around and saw a girl with two buns on her head. "Oh I'm sorry. I just can't seem to read past this first page of this book."
The girl looked at the title of the book with surprise as Kirito showed it to her. 'This book…is completely useless. It is definitely on par with the "Cooking guides for ninjas" I read earlier. Looks like he's from the academy still since he doesn't have a headband. He looks pretty decent for his age. Definitely has potential. Maybe I should give him some guidance in taijutsu as his senior. Yes, I should do that. The two other boys in my team are just too thick-headed.'
"My name is Tenten," the girl replied. "I just recently graduated from the academy not too long ago. Would you like me to give you some guidance in taijutsu?"
"Oh, my name is Kirito." But Kirito didn't know how to respond to her question. He did want someone to teach him, but he didn't want someone with barely any experience to train him. The training methods that this girl has may be worse than Iruka sensei's.
Tenten seemed to read Kirito's mind and twitched her eye. A junior was looking down on her! "Hey, don't think that just because I'm a girl that I'm not good at taijutsu. Besides the monsters in my team, there is barely anyone my age that can stand against me. I'll meet you at the training ground near the pond by the academy tomorrow at five. Don't be late."
Without another word she left, leaving Kirito dazed. He didn't know what he got himself into, but it seemed the girl wanted to prove something rather than teach him.
Tenten woke up early the next day. She was very excited. On her face was a rare grin that stretched cheek to cheek. She was thinking of the ways to show off! Ever since she joined her team, she was constantly beaten down by Neji. But that was expected since Neji was considered a genius of the Hyuga Clan. But to be beaten by Rock Lee over and over as well? She didn't believe it at first, but having no way to deal with Lee's speed, she finally admitted deep down that she was inferior. Therefore, she really wanted to use this spar as an excuse to vent out some of her frustrations.
She really was sincere at first when she told Kirito that she would give him some guidance. She was his senior after all. But the disrespect on Kirito's face irritated her far too much. If he didn't show up, she will find him and would really show him no mercy. Yes, that was what she decided upon and there was no way she was going to change her decision.
She arrived at the training ground at five in the morning. She enjoyed having early mornings. It was a way for her to feel refreshed. Tenten frowned. Glancing around, there was no sight of Kirito. Did he sleep in? Nevertheless, Tenten continued to wait.
Half an hour later, Tenten's mood went from bright to dull. 'That kid actually slept in! I can't believe he's making a girl wait for him.'
The sun began to rise and there was still no sign of Kirito. Tenten was done waiting. She had to meet with her team soon. 'Perhaps I was too direct? But I heard it's not good for girls to be too upfront. Oh what am I talking about? I just wanted to teach him a lesson. Yes, that's right. Next time I see him, I would definitely show him that girls aren't inferior to boys when it comes to taijutsu.'
Kirito finally woke up. It was ten in the morning. 'Oh crap,' he thought. He was late for the school again.
Kirito arrived to the academy with messy hair, yet it still looked fine in its own way. As he opened the door, Iruka sensei already began to shout at him. "Kirito, your tardiness is worse than Naruto's lately. It's not good if you oversleep. You'll have to make up for the missed class after school."
Kirito nodded his head sheepishly and walked to his desk.
After day of boring classes, Kirito stayed behind. "Sensei, please make it quick. I have an appointment at five today."
"You also had one this morning at nine," answered Iruka sensei.
"I was just training really hard during the evenings so I end up very tired. Sometimes I sleep in by accident."
"A lot of other students are also very hard-working and I don't see them late. Today you can clean the equipment in the weapons room. You can leave when you're done."
'How irresponsible to let a student touch weapons,' thought Kirito as he walked towards the equipment room.
However this was all a plot by Iruka. He knew Kirito used a sword, but didn't know his strength in his kenjutsu. Thus, he hoped Kirito would play around with some of the weapons so he can have an idea of how strong Kirito was. After all, children who come into contact with weapons can't help but be curious.
Kirito entered the room. He took a cloth and began polishing the kunais. Then he realized that many of them were already bright and clean. Even if he left now, no one can prove that he left early. As he was about to leave, in the corner of his eye he saw a figure reflected from the one of the kunais. It was Iruka sensei spying on him! 'Iruka sensei must be trying to catch me leave so he can issue another punishment. He's really going too far. I was just a little late for several times a week!'
Kirito now knew he had to play it out. He began working diligently on polishing each and every kunai. Then he worked on the shurikens. The weapons inside the weaponry had their edges dulled, but one still had to be careful when polishing it.
Meanwhile, hidden in a place close by, Iruka's eyebrows touched each other. He should feel happy that a student of his was working hard at a task that was given to him. But he was still a little vexed at how he wasn't able to have a grasp of Kirito's true strength. Iruka really wanted to know because during class, he could tell Kirito was clearly holding back against everyone he sparred against. Kirito had avoided Sasuke, but Iruka knew that if the two were to fight, nine times out of ten, Kirito would come out on top.
Kirito looked at the time. It was five. The girl he met yesterday might get mad if he made her wait. There were only the swords left. It looked really clean already since not many people used them. So Kirito left the weaponry, hoping Iruka sensei wouldn't come to reprimand him.
Iruka just stood there and let Kirito go. After seeing Kirito work so diligently, he didn't have the heart to make him stay any longer since he knew Kirito had an appointment today. Disappointed, he left as well while thinking he had forgotten something.
Kirito made his way to the training ground near the pond. He was a few minutes late, but there was no sign of Tenten. 'Could she have left already? Maybe she just walked out of the area.'
Half an hour later, Kirito grew impatient. It was her that made the appointment and yet she's late? Kirito left after it was clear that Tenten wasn't going to show up. He had been played! He silently swore that he would have a nice spar with her once he sees her.
Kirito walked along the streets on Konoha until he finally found Naruto. The two of them went to the ramen stand to have their dinner. Kirito used his best manners to eat the ramen softly as possible. Naruto, on the other hand, was slurping down the ramen as fast as he could before ordering a second.
'It's moments like this where I pretend I do not know him,' Kirito thought to himself. By the time Kirito finished one bowl, Naruto had already downed three.
As they walked back together to their respective apartments, the two of them began to talk.
"Hey Kirito, what do you plan on doing for the survival exercise tomorrow?" asked Naruto.
"Survival exercise?"
"Yeah. Didn't Iruka sensei tell you about it after class?"
"Nope."
"We're going to the forest for three days and two nights. We have to find our own food and we can't bring any inside. That's why earlier I ate so much," Naruto said proudly.
"What are we allowed to bring then?"
"Iruka sensei gave us a list but I didn't copy it down since I didn't need many of the things."
"…"
Kirito felt terrible. The whole day had gone wrong for him. First, he had to stay after class, then he waited for half an hour for a girl who never showed up, and finally he had just learnt that there was a survival exercise tomorrow which he had no details of!
Kirito sighed to himself. Just as he thought things couldn't get worse, a girl with two buns stood across from him.
