Wolf's Out of the Bag
CPOV
I did as Alice asked, taking my time while hunting. I took down a large elk and perched in a tree observing the wildlife. I closed my eyes and listened. I was looking for my last kill. I located it and decided to meditate on the heartbeat I was following. It was a strong heartbeat. Strong like my Isabella and our children. Isabella would make it through. She would get to meet her children.
I launched myself into the air without opening my eyes. At the height of my leap, I opened my eyes. I can only imagine what I looked like. My eyes were burning with a determined fire and I came down on the boar with grace and perfect precision. When I was done, walked home at light speed letting my mind wander to my beautiful children.
I was home fairly quickly after I left my hunting grounds. I had been gone a few hours. Isabella's heart was slowing and her time as a human was quickly coming to a close.
I showered and changed into a light blue button down and left it open. My children slept more soundly on my bare skin and didn't fuss nearly as much. I pulled out a dark grey sweater and laid it on the bed where it would stay until I went into work the next day. I pulled on a pair of lighter grey pants and went to the nursery in search of my children. I picked up the girls and held them with one arm and then Jameson. I sat in the large rocker with them. They all fit perfectly on my chest I reached over and turned on the docking station choosing to play Chopin for them.
And I sat. I listened to Isabella's fading heart and the sounds of steady breathing from my children. I knew if I were human I was be feeling more nervous than anything right now, not knowing for sure if she would make it through. She had made it this far and was almost done but there was still that chance that venom could preserve her dead body.
I pushed the thought from my mind and focused on the angels in my arms. I knew I would push through for them. I would have the help of my family and they would never be alone in this world. I hummed along to the melody of Nocturne op. 9 No. 2. Riley padded in softly and looked out the new window. It let it a wonderful natural light. We never turned the lights in here because, as vampires, we could see when it was dark and we needn't bother the sleeping habits of the children to check on them.
"Are you ready to be a vampire wrangler?" he asked. I looked up at him carefully.
"We'll manage. We can only hope she has the control you do." I said, stroking Persephone's corn silk hair.
"And if she doesn't?" he asked, he was still staring out the window.
"You have little faith in your little sister." I paused. "She'll learn quickly; if she doesn't, she won't get to watch her children grow. And they're growing fast. Alice was right their growth has slowed. But at three days old, they share the size and developments of six-month olds."
Riley walked to where a sat, he knelt down and plucked Paisley from my arms.
"They've grown so much." He said, wandering around with her aimlessly and gently rocking her.
"They have. Unfortunately, if we can't control Isabella, Alex with have to spend a lot of time with them as will Esme and Alice of course but, we need all the man power we have to control and angry newborn. If Isabella wants to see her children it will be almost impossible to stop her. But, I won't let her hurt them." I stood up. I motioned for Riley to follow me. I led him out of the nursery and down to where most of the family was sitting in the living room.
"I believe we should address some things before Isabella wakes up." I said. Alex closed the book she was reading and set it aside.
"Until we are sure of Isabella's temperament, you'll be spending a lot of time with the triplets. I handed Jameson to her. "I hope you're good with children."
"Why me? Not that I'm complaining." Alex asked. Before I could answer she was distracted by a now wide awake Jameson babbling away at her.
"Alex and the children are the only people in this house with blood running through their veins still. It's our top priority to keep them safe, even from Bella."
"Unless you count Jacob." Edward said. "He and a couple other wolves are on their way over to supervise Isabella's awakening. Those are his thoughts not mine, they're almost here."
"Well that's," I didn't really know what to say. "Great." I finished. "We could use the help if she becomes," I searched for the correct word. "Problematic."
"Until we know for sure how she'll react, I would like at least one of you with Alex in the nursery at all times. Riley, I'm sorry but I'd like you with me and Isabella the whole time. I believe she'll react better to us."
"I'd like to have a wolf in the nursery, too." Jacob walked in with two boys following him. I passed of my daughter to the nearest person and whirled around. A fire ablaze in my eyes.
"I'll not have you near my children!" I snarled. Something stopped me from moving forward.
JakePOV
"Carlisle!" Emmett was at his side in a second with a hand pushing his chest back. Jasper had a hand on his shoulder and Riley was concentrating very hard on him. Probably putting a shield between us.
I had never seen Carlisle lose it like this. His eyes turned black and if he hadn't been stopped it would have been an all-out brawl. The blonde bloodsucker's eyes slowly returned to normal. He took a deep breath and exhaled heavily.
"I apologize for my behavior. I didn't know just how strong my fatherhood instincts would be." He said. I looked at him like he had gone insane.
"I don't guess I know the feeling." I looked around the room. "So! Introductions." I said, "This is Sam and Embry. Guys these are the Cullen's." I noticed the girl human girl on the couch holding a baby. "And some new faces."
"Jake, this is Alex. Alex is going to be part of this family. She's holding Jameson. Tristian is his first name. Edward has Paisley and this," he nodded to the baby in his arms, "is Persephone. These are Bella's children."
I took the baby Riley was placing in arms a little in shock. I was in awe of the three children my best friend's little sister had produced. I looked at the beautiful little girl in my arms. Something that Riley said clicked.
"What do you mean the girl will be part of the family?" I asked. This was too close to Quileute land and Carlisle knew that. It was one thing for Bella; her life and the lives of her children depended on her being changed. This girl was healthy.
"When she decides, she'll make the change." Carlisle said.
"That's not her decision to make." I said, heatedly. This wouldn't go over well with the tribe.
"I think what I do with my life IS my decision. Who are you to say it's not?" Alex stood up, holding the boy.
"I'm the person currently in charge of protecting these lands and the people in it from becoming like them." I said, nodding to the vampires around her.
"Jake stop." Riley interjected.
"No, I'm sorry, Riley. But, I can't let this happen. This is too much. First, Bella went and screwed herself. Now you're telling me this girl is your next victim?" I said. Carlisle took the little girl from my arms gently. I paid him no attention.
"Jacob enough! This girl will be part of my family because I can't ever lose her. No matter what she wants from me I'm bound to her. She's my Emily." He said. His Emily… that's impossible vampires can't imprint, that's strictly a wolf thing. I backed off and looked between Riley and Alex several times.
"What do you mean your Emily?" I asked, skeptically.
"Vampires don't imprint quite like wolves. We don't even call it imprinting. She's my mate. But it's basically like imprinting." Riley said. "She has every right to make that decision because of me."
"How the hell does that work?" I asked. "You guys are technically different species."
"She doesn't feel it as strongly as I do." he said. He looked down. Almost defeated.
"I feel something. I will admit. But it's nothing like he's described to me in the past. But I know what I feel isn't normal. It's impossible." She said.
I looked back as the two wolves behind me. Sam just barely nodded his head.
"We'll allow it." the bloodsuckers in the room visibly relaxed. "But, we reserve the right to monitor the situation."
"We'd expect nothing less." Carlisle said. There was a little bit of an awkward silence for a few long seconds.
"So…" I started, breaking the silence. "Can I meet the other two?" Riley looked around and motioned at Alex. She came to stand next to him.
"This is Jameson." Riley said. Alex just looked at me. "Alex." he whispered and nodded in my direction. She reluctantly held him out to me. I took him carefully. He didn't stir, rather he settled comfortably into my arms. I could see the little Isabella in him.
"He's beautiful."
"We think so. The girls are both just as beautiful." Alex said. I could tell I didn't make the greatest of first impressions.
"I would like to apologize for just now. It's my job. Can we start over? It would be nice to be on better terms with my best friend's one and only." I shifted, the baby in my arms to one arm. I stuck out my right hand. "Jacob Black. Official Best Friend and Mortal Enemy. Pleased to meet you."
"Alexandria Bercham." She said. "I don't really have a label for us yet." she said.
"That's not a bad thing. So this is Bella's oldest child?" I asked.
"You've already met the middle child, Persephone. I think you should meet the youngest. This is Paisley." Edward said standing up. I gave Jameson back to Alex and took the small bundle from him. I looked from him to the Paisley. She squirmed a little and opened her eyes. Her green eyes focus on me.
I hit my knees.
BPOV
I couldn't let my babies hear me in pain. For what seemed like days I willed my weakened heart to pump the venom through me faster. The pain was indescribable. Just saying it hurt wasn't enough. I was unaware of anything else around me because of the pain. I could hear my heartbeat the entire time. It hurt. Each beat hurt worse than the next. They came slower and harder than before towards the end.
Then they stopped. The fire was nearly all gone. I opened my eyes to see dust. Dust and light. Everything I saw was familiar but completely different. I turned my head to one side and saw all of the medical gear Carlisle used on a daily basis. I sat up quickly. Unaccustomed to my new speed, I watched the dust particles flurry around me in the air. I carefully stood and heard the heartbeats of seven people. I listened to their voices. They were all relatively calm. Something had happened and most of the conversations going on were based on whatever had happened. I looked down at the clothes that Alice must have dressed me in.
I left the room and went to Carlisle and I's room. I looked in on the nursery and saw that it looked lived in. The sight made my dead heart soar. I opened the window and almost all conversation stopped downstairs.
"I don't hear her heart anymore, Carlisle."
Esme.
"Take the baby."
Carlisle. My love. My man. He had been holding one of our children.
"Carlisle, are you sure? What if she didn't make it through? Why don't you let one of us go check on her?"
Alice. Had they not heard me yet?
"I have to know."
I stepped up on the windowsill.
"Isabella?" I turned at the sound of my name. He was in the next room. I heard him pad softly and carefully through the room. The door to the nursery creaked open. I grinned at him and fell backwards through the window.
"Bella!" I heard him shout. I had hit the ground and was running by the time he made it to the window.
"Come on, love. Let's hunt." I shouted back.
I tested the limits of my new existence. I heard Carlisle behind me. I glanced over my shoulder and could see him right on my heels. That was a mistake.
Even my new and enhanced abilities couldn't fix my clumsiness. I faltered and went flying. Carlisle, not expecting me to trip, narrowly avoided me and rand ahead to catch me. We collided and the weight and inertia of me sent him to the ground with me in tow. We tumbled over each other until he forced us to a stop. His body, no longer as hard as I remembered, hovering over mine.
"Hello, dear." I purred. He narrowed his eyes at me and smiled.
"Vixen." He said. He pulled me to my feet and swung me in a circle. "You have no idea how happy I am to hear your voice."
"I've missed your voice too." I told him.
"What do you mean? I was with you and speaking to you seventy-five percent of the time you underwent the transition." He said. "You don't remember?"
"I didn't hear it. I could only hear my own heartbeat." I told him. Carlisle hugged me to him and I relished in the fact that his body molded to mine just as much as mine did to his. I hugged him back, it wasn't like hugging a rock any more. He was warm; he was soft.
"I don't know what I would've done if I had lost you. I mean, I know I would have taken care of the children. But, I would never have been the same." He murmured into my hair.
"What do you mean 'lost me'?" I asked him.
"What do you remember about giving birth?" he asked.
"Nothing. All I remember is falling and pain. And blood. I remember that too."
"That's what I have feared. You went into shock. Which isn't good at all. You were seconds from death on my operating table. You were almost one of the one's that venom couldn't save." He said pulling back to look at me.
"What about the babies?" I pulled away completely and started to move back toward the house. Carlisle grabbed me and pulled me back in front of him.
"They were delivered perfectly. A healthy boy and two perfect girls." He said. I smile spread across my face. I looked down out of habit trying to hide a blush that would never come. It was then that I noticed what I was wearing.
"I want to see them." I said, looking back up.
"I'll take you to them after you hunt. Alex is still human, I have to take every precaution." He smiled.
"I can't hunt in this dress. It's too nice. I'll ruin it." I said.
"I'll buy you a prettier one. Come now. Open up your senses to the forest around you. It's safe." He said. I closed my eyes and let my ears reach out. I took a deep breath; the burn in my throat intensified at the smell of something wonderful. I pinpointed its heartbeat and took off in that direction.
…
I hadn't mussed my dress as much as I thought. It wasn't bloodstained but it was torn in a couple places. Carlisle and I ran home hand in hand. He refused to tell me anything about the children.
"I want you to experience them first hand." He'd say when I whined about it. He stopped me on the steps of the porch and turned his head to mine.
"The others are liable to be a little careful for a while. Especially Jasper. Take it with a grain of salt, he's been around newborns far too long." he said. "Ready?"
"Yes." I said and pulled him up the stairs.
I opened the door and used my new senses to lead me to where everyone else was. It just happened to be the living room. I turned the corner and was met with two large bodies. I gasped and recoiled away from them. I recognized Sam Uley and Embry Call.
"You guys stink." Was all I said.
"You're one to talk, Ruby." Embry said, referring to the red color of my eyes.
"Embry." Sam chastised. "Is she ready?" he looked over my head at Carlisle.
"We will only know once she tries." He said.
"We can't take that chance. Not with Alex and the children." Sam said.
"What's that supposed to mean. Since when are my family and children any of your business? Aren't we supposed to be your mortal enemy?" I said and pushed him aside. Edward, Jasper, Esme, Emmet, and Alice were standing a few feet behind them. Waiting for me, watching me carefully.
"I know I'm different now, but good God, look at me like you recognize me." I said. I walked toward them intending to move through the gap between Emmett and Jasper. The closed it before I could.
"What's the big deal? Let me through I want to see my children." I said. I stretched up on my toes and looked over Jasper's shoulder. I saw the small group of four standing in a circle. Rosalie was holding one of the girls judging by the color of her hat. Jake stood facing me, holding one of them. I couldn't tell if it was a girl or the boy. Riley was blocking him with his back to me and Alex was next to him.
The four of them looked up at me. I made eye contact with me and I lost it. I forced the vampire out of my way. I lunged. Riley turned fully, probably intending to put a shield up, and revealed the small blue bundle in Alex's arms. I stopped mid-attack. It happened so fast, I had started the attack and stopped before I could hit Riley's shield or be touched by one of my new siblings. That didn't stop them from grabbing me once they could react.
I didn't struggle against whoever had grabbed my arms. My eyes never left the little boy in Alex's arms. Half a second after they grabbed me, someone's hand closed over my throat. I looked over to see Jasper, he forced me to my knees. I watched him carefully and became aware of just how much pressure my family was putting on my arms and throat. I said nothing. Carlisle walked calmly around the group of vampires holding me hostage.
"You don't have to hold her like that. Jasper you should know that you saw her stop before you could get to her." he said. I still hadn't looked away from Jasper. He looked up and I followed his gaze to my other side where Edward was holding into one arm. Edward looked from Jasper to me and quickly dropped my arm. Emmett who had been behind me holding the other followed suit. Jasper and Edward offered me their hands to help me stand. I took them as a formality. I didn't actually need help.
"I'm sorry, Bella. It's an instantaneous reaction." Jasper said. Carlisle had taken the baby boy from Alex and turned to me.
"Isabella, this is your oldest child." He said, and gave him to me. The small child in my arms watched me wide eyed. I turned away from them other people around me and moved to sit on the couch. When I had settled, I let my finger trail from his temple to his little chin. His beautiful violet eyes lit up and he grinned. His little hand had pushed free of the blankets and was grabbing at my finger. I let him take hold of it.
"Hi." I whispered to him. I was suddenly, painfully aware of all the eyes on me. My head snapped up. The sudden movement made the humans in the room jump a little. "Does he have a name yet?" I asked.
"Jameson." Edward supplied for me. He was standing on the other side of the couch. I smiled and looked down at him. Jameson after his father.
"Tristian Jameson, actually. But we're calling him Jameson." Carlisle said.
"Making it a traveling middle name, Carlisle?" I teased him. He came and sat next to me.
"If you hadn't insisted, his middle name would be something else." He said. Rosalie moved in front of me.
"This is Persephone. She's the older of the girls." She said. "Persephone Claire Nykole." I pulled my finger free of the little hand that had taken possession of it. Carlisle took Jameson from me and Rose placed Persephone in my arms.
She looked just like Carlisle. She had Renee's eyes but she looked just like Carlisle. She grinned at me and squealed.
"Hello to you, my sweet angel." I said.
"I've been calling her Butterfly." Carlisle said. "They're all angels to me."
"What about the youngest?" I asked.
"I call her Sweet Pea." He said. We both looked at Jake. He was holding my last child and standing very possessively.
"Jake?" I said. Riley nudged him. Jake shuffled forward and squatted in front of me.
"Her name's Paisley Alexandria Marie," He said looking at her strangely. "And she's perfect." She was the spitting image of her sister, and Carlisle.
"Jake trade me." I said. He looked at me like I'd said throw her like a football. He glanced at Carlisle, I did too. Carlisle nodded his head toward me. He sighed and shifted the two little girls between us. I looked at Paisley she started to fuss, then she opened her eyes and looked at me. She ginned just like her siblings did.
"What's going on with you?" I pointed the question at Jacob. He stayed quiet for a second. He passed Persephone to Alice.
"Just hear me out." he said.
"What?" I stood carefully. I scrutinized him. Whatever he wasn't telling me, need to come out. Like yesterday.
"I can't choose these things, Bells. Remember that. If I could, I wouldn't have chosen… I mean I would have waited… I don't know what I would have done." Jacob was tripping over his words.
"Why don't I take Paisley?" Edward said, he took her from me. I watched Edward with an open mouth.
"Why do you need to take her?" I asked.
"She's kind of picky right now. She only really like four people in this family. One's already got Jameson. Eddy here stole her heart, you're another. But seeing as how you're about to try to kill the fourth, I can see why Edward's the popular choice." Emmett said. My head snapped back to Jacob.
"What did you do?" I demanded.
"Bella, He can't control it. None of us can." Sam said coming forward. I shot him a look that stopped him in his tracks.
"I didn't ask you. I asked him." I snapped back to Jacob.
"Jacob Ephraim Black, tell me what happened. Now." I said.
"I imprinted." He paused, his gaze moved to the child in Edward's arms. "On your… youngest… daughter."
I started to advance on him.
"What the hell do you mean, imprinted."
"It's like mating for vampires." He said. "We can't control it just like you can't." I put a hand on his neck and pushed him toward the door.
"OUT."
"Shouldn't we stop her?" I heard Alex ask.
"Hell no. This is getting good!" Embry said.
"Besides. Even when Bella was human she had a temper. Once she starts it best to just stay out of the way. Otherwise you'll be on the receiving end." Riley said.
"Being a newborn doesn't help either." Jasper added. The entire group followed Jake and I outside.
"What the hell, Jake? How dare you stake your claim on MY daughter before I even get a chance to see her? Your MATE? She's just a little baby!" I pushed against his chest.
"Bella, it's not like that. I don't see her like that." he said.
"What? She's not good enough for you to see her as your mate now? You need to make up your DAMN MIND!" I yelled and pushed him again. He wasn't fighting back and it was making even madder. I pushed him even harder. He flew back and hit a tree he still didn't try to phase.
"What the hell's wrong with you?" I yelled.
"Bella, I don't blame you for hating my guts right now." he said.
"She's gonna tear him apart Carlisle." Riley said.
"I know." he sighed. "But she's doing what I've wanted to do since she told me she slept with him. Even more so since he imprinted on Paisley."
"You and I both, but you and I both know she'll regret this later." Riley said. There was a pause.
"Bells. Stop." Riley said, I whirled around to find him standing a few feet behind me.
"How the hell are you okay with this? She's your newborn niece!" I yelled at him.
"I'm not thrilled about it either, but you have to understand he's her one and only. All he wants is her happiness and hell do anything and be anything to ensure that. So until she wants him romantically, he's there as whatever figure in her life purely for her happiness." He paused. "When the day comes that she wants him as more than a friend, then we'll all take turns grilling him. It's already been decided. There's not much you can do about it right now."
I looked at Carlisle. He shrugged and nodded in agreement. I turned and glared at Jake. I ghosted over to take Paisley from Edward.
"Bring them upstairs." I said and disappeared.
