Chapter 3: Girlfriends and Good Looks
Clare woke up early this morning to go to school. Today, she didn't walk with Eli. It would just be too awkward. But, she know, she couldn't avoid him any longer. After all, they were locker neighbors.
Clare approached her locker at a quick pace, hoping to avoid Eli. She stealthily put in the combo of her locker, and flung it open. She quickly scanned the contents of her locker, and pulled out her french and history textbooks, along with her composition notebook. Just as she was closing her locker, she was startled by a familiar voice.
"Hey" Eli said. "Hi" Clare replied back.
This was strange. It's like he forgot what had happened Friday night. "Eli, I ne-" "Clare" he said. "Oh, sorry. You can go first." Clare replied back. "What were you saying?" "The best thing just happened to me. So, this past weekend, I went to the mall with Adam. And, I met someone." At that instant, a wave of sorrow just rolled over her face. Trying not to show it, she forced a grin upon her face.
"That's great Eli. Really great. So, what's her name?"Clare asked.
"Why tell you her name, when she's right here."
Coming up the hallway was a girl wearing a black tutu on top of skinny jeans, with a leopard print headband in her hair, which was up in two messy buns.
"Imogen's your girlfriend?" Clare, why would you say it like that. He probably thinks you're judging way too harshly right now.
"Hello Clare Edwards. We meet again." Imogen said. Imogen was a strange cookie. Clare would know. But, underneath all that weirdness, was a pretty girl. She had long, silky, dark brown hair. Her tan skin was the shade of creamy caramel. No wonder Eli was attracted to her. Hell, Clare would have been attracted to her if she were a lesbian.
"Nice to see you, Imogen." Clare spoke.
" I would love to stay and talk, but I have to go to tutoring for History with Perino." Imogen said.
Eli spoke. "Imogen, you should have Clare tutor you. She's really good at History. She's a pretty smart cookie." As he said this, he put an arm around Clare's shoulders, causing her to blush.
"Do you mind tutoring Imogen, Clare?"
Clare didn't really feel like tutoring anyone, especially Imogen, her best friend/crush's, girlfriend. But, it was Eli who was asking. Clare wanted to make him happy.
"I'd be happy to." Clare answered.
"EEEEE! Thank you, so so much, Clare Edwards!" Imogen jumped up and gave Clare a big bear hug. Clare just stood there, awkwardly, being enveloped by Imogen.
She released Clare from her grasp. "See you later Clare." "Bye Imogen."
"See you later, baby." Imogen walked over to Eli, and placed a sultry kiss on his lips. Clare looked up at them, watching how long Imogen was kissing Eli. Clare wanted to be the one to kiss Eli like that.
After a decade, Imogen stopped sucking face with Eli. She walked away.
"Where were you this morning, Clarebear?" Eli asked. Clare loved when he called her by her pet name.
"Sorry you were waiting for me. I woke up late this morning." Clare said.
"It's okay. What were you going to tell me, Clare?" Eli asked.
"Um, about what happened Friday…" Clare began. "What happened Friday?" Eli asked. "The kiss." I said. "When you kissed me"
"Trust me Clare. I did not feel anything. We were caught up in the moment. That's all." Eli reassured.
Clare didn't know how to feel right now. Hurt, sadness, anger. Why would he kiss her, and say that it didn't mean anything?
"Yeah. I didn't feel anything either." Clare said.
"That's good. Just imagine, you and I dating. That would be crazy!"
Clare felt as if a stake had struck her heart. How could he say such a thing?
Eli noticed the look on Clare's face.
"I'm not saying that you are not dateable, but you and I, we're like brother and sister." Eli said.
"Yeah, brother and sister." Clare said, sadly.
The final bell rang, signifying that they had two minutes to get to homeroom.
"Well. I got to get to class. See you in Biology." Eli said. "Bye." Clare said.
Eli walked away. Clare ran in the other direction, heading towards the washroom.
She flung open the door, and ran into the nearest stall. The closed the door, and she laid down against the wall. She began sobbing.
How could he? Why Imogen, of all people? She was so upset. She didn't even want to go to class. Clare decided that she was just going to wallow in self-pity the whole day.
The sound of a door opening startled Clare.
"Clare? Is that you?" Alli said.
"In-in here." she said.
"Sweetie, please come out."
Clare stood up, and headed out of the stall.
"Eli?" Alli asked. She nodded her head. "Come here." Alli embraced Clare in a heartwarming hug.
"What did he do this time?" Alli asked.
Clare wiped her wet cheeks, and evened her breathing. "He's dating Imogen."
"I'm so sorry sweetie. Go to the sink and wash your face." Alli commanded. Clare did as she was told. Clare looked in the mirror at herself. There stood a pasty skinned, long haired, nerdy girl with unflattering eyeglasses.
"Alli, why am I so ugly?" Clare asked.
"You are not ugly, Clare. You're , if you really want Eli to notice, you have to catch his attention."
"How am I going to do that?" Clare asked.
"Clare, come to my house after school today with me." Alli said.
"For what?" she asked.
"Clare Edwards, I think it's time you got a makeover."
"Almost done." Alli said. Clare was in Alli's bedroom getting made over by Alli. Alli had already picked out some clothes for Clare to wear. She was now in the process of cutting Clare's hair.
"Done." the Indian girl said. Alli gave Clare a hand-held mirror so she could look at her new do. "Alli, it's so pretty." Clare said.
Her hairstyle was now cut to neck-length, layered with loose curls, and a side-swept bang on the right side of her forehead.
"Gorgeous." Alli said. She continued to speak. "Just one more thing." Alli reached over to Clare and took off the petite girl's glasses. "There." she said.
Clare looked at herself in the mirror. This whole time, her glasses had been hiding her features. Her eyes were now a mesmerizing shade of blue.
"Sweetie, if Eli doesn't notice you now, he must have something wrong in the head.
The next day at school, Clare received many looks walking down the hall. Guys who never noticed her before were drooling from their mouths' as she walked by. The girls looked at her in pure envy; some because they were jealous of her looks, others because their boyfriends' were looking at her.
There was just something different about Clare today. She could tell. She felt confident.
She strutted into her Biology class, feeling as light as a feather. She heard a holler in the distance.
"Hey baby. Why don't you come take a seat on my lap?!" Mike Dallas said.
"As if." Clare said. She never felt this bold before. It was like a surge of electricity; it energized her.
She boldly made her way over to Eli.
"Hey. Mind if I sit?" she asked.
Eli looked up at her. "Hi. My name is you new here?" he asked. "Eli, you really don't know who this is, do you?"
Eli paused, and scanned the porcelain beauty up and down. "Clare… Wow, um- you look, different."
"What do you think?" she asked him. She twirled 360 degrees, giving him a full view.
"You look… hot." Eli said. This comment made Clare's cheeks turn a scarlet red. "Thank you." she said.
"Why the new look?" he asked. "There's this guy.I wanted him to notice me." she began. If only he knew it were him.
"Wow, must be a special guy. You shouldn't have to change how you look for a guy to notice you. You were beautiful before, and you're beautiful now." Eli always knew how to make her feel better.
"Come here." he said. Eli pulled Clare in for a hug.
"Hmmm." Imogen stood in front of them. "Immy" Eli said. Imogen knelt down so Eli could give her a peck on the cheek. "I like your new look Clare." she said. "Thank you." Clare said. Imogen replied. "We should go take our seats now. Class is about to start. The two girls took their seats, and listened to the teacher lecture about mitosis.
"So, how long have you and Eli known each other." Imogen asked. "8 years ago." Clare replied. "8 years. That's a long time to know a person. Have you two ever dated before?"
That was on of the most out-of-the-blue things Clare had ever heard. "No, we never dated before. I see Eli only as a friend."
"Good" Imogen said. "Because if you ever tried to steal Eli from me, I would have to kill you."
Clare's bedroom was destroyed. The covers of her bed were tore off, the clothes thrown out of her closet. Everything was trashed. A person was in her room.
"Haha. Now I have found the spellbook. I can finally fulfill the prophecy. Everything is finally coming into plan. I can now complete my biggest desire. To destroy Clare Edwards."
