As Halloween gets closer, I just thought it might be nice to write a little, off-to-the-side Friendship Ficlet for you guys. I hope you enjoy! Happy early Halloween!
The Halloween dance had gone well, and as Elphaba Thropp and Galinda Upland made their way back up to their dorm room. Elphaba had wanted to ask her something about the dance, but she couldn't remember what it was.
Galinda suddenly remembered something, snapping her friend out of her thoughts.
"Elphie!" she squealed in delight. "I got you this!"
She pulled out a package of candy corn from her purse, with Best Friends Forever! –Galinda written on it.
"Oh, thanks!" Elphaba smiled, even though she didn't particularly like candy corn. "I don't know what to say."
"Don't say anything." Galinda grinned. "Eat!"
Elphaba ripped it open, and pulled one of the triangle candies out. Popping it in her mouth, she realized it actually wasn't that bad.
The wind danced around them, and Galinda flicked her blonde hair to the side as it blew in her face. She shivered. "It's getting cold!"
"Here, take my jacket," Elphaba shrugged off her black warmth and draped it over Galinda's pale shoulders.
Galinda smiled. "You're a good friend, Elphie."
Elphaba smiled back. "So are you."
She was suddenly aware how precious that nickname was.
They shared the candy as they entered the room, Elphaba's question coming back to her.
"So, while I went to the restroom, you saw Fiyero?"
Galinda let out a giggle.
"Maybe…"
That was all Elphaba needed about the subject. Galinda handed the jacket back to her and yawned.
"I just noticed, we have a test tomorrow!" Elphaba groaned, flopping on her bed. "We shouldn't have stayed up so late."
"That's what it means to party!" Galinda laughed. "I know you'll bring your grade up if it goes down. You always do."
Elphaba wanted to reply, but she became aware how tired she was.
"It's late. Get some sleep."
She half-walked, half-stumbled to the restroom to brush her teeth, but didn't bother getting pajamas on.
As she turned out the light, she heard Galinda's sleepy voice calling over the rain that began to fall.
"Happy Halloween, Elphie."
Elphaba smiled once more, though it was almost non-existent, because all she wanted to do was sleep. She set her glasses on her bedside table and rolled over.
She remembered when she had despised Galinda, thinking she was stuck up and only thought for herself. And even though Elphaba didn't like dances, she was pleased to know that's where this friendship all began, in the midst of everything else complicated that had happened.
And like Galinda, her best and only friend, she felt as if she couldn't be happier.
"Galinda?"
"Hmmm?"
"Happy Halloween to you, too."
