Chapter 9: Thanksgiving Fun Pt. 2
"Allen, your friends have arrived."
"Shoot! Already?"
Allen had been so busy helping the other maids and servants in the mansion that he barely had time to dress up properly. Mana watches with amusement as the boy struggles to hastily tie his purple necktie.
"Easy my boy, rushing will only make it sloppy." The man offers his help, fixing the tie with ease and patience. Done with that, he takes the blazer lying on Allen's bed and helps him ease into it. Then pats down any folds or wrinkles. "There, now you look simply dashing."
Allen blushes at the compliment as he studies himself at the mirror. Black button-up, purple tie, white vest, black blazer, black slacks, and black shoes. He puts on his white gloves.
"You don't look too bad yourself."
Mana adjusts the cuffs of his dark gray tux. "Please, at my age, I can hardly compete with you Allen."
"You sure? I know a good number of your fellow female coworkers who can counter that argument."
"Now you stay away from them you sly boy," he pinches the boy's cheek. "Heaven knows what you keep spilling to them behind by back."
"Only decent topics, I can assure you." Allen gives his innocent smile.
"Hey brat! What's keeping ya?" Cross barges in wearing a black trench coat suit adorned with buckles in a kind of punkish style. "Don't keep those friends of yours waiting! Remember they're your guests."
"Got it Master, I just need to search for Tim."
"No need." Cross collects the kitten, who lay perched on his red head dressed in a cute little necktie collar and gives him to Allen. "Found him wandering in the kitchen trying to steal food. Reminds me of another idiot I know."
"I don't do that anymore!"
"Sure you don't." Both adults say making Allen huff irritably.
"Well if that's how you're going to be, fine. Let's go Tim!"
He carries Tim and walks out with his chin up.
"So how do you think this year's gathering is going to go?" Mana asks once Allen was out of earshot.
"Better than last year, that's for sure."
"And that's because you expect chaos to ensue, am I right?"
The redheaded man gives a lopsided grin. "You know me too well."
Mana sighs. "May God help us all."
...
"Hello honorable guests and welcome. Please come in." A maid gestures inside the Walker Estate. "Young Master Allen will be with you in just a few moments. In the meantime, allow me to escort you to the lounging room. If there's anything you need, please do not hesitate to ask."
She leads them through the wide expanse halls while other servants bustle around fulfilling their own tasks.
"Wow. I knew this place would be huge, but the inside looks just as big as the outside," Lavi says in awe.
"Reminds me of the Renaissance seeing all these glorious paintings," Tiedoll spoke. "It's nice to know that my influence has rubbed off on Cross."
He fails to notice his three sons either shake their heads or roll their eyes.
"This isn't gonna be like one of those boring fancy parties is it? Where we just stand around hold a glass of champagne and speak in snobbish rich people language about how the weather is outside?"
"Daisya don't be rude!" scolds Marie.
"I do say Mr. Barry that was indeed very ungentlemanly of you." Lavi spoke in said snobbish rich people language, deep accent, back straight, and face composed in outright seriousness. "We don't just speak about the weather, we also discuss business. Business and money!"
Bookaman rubs his face.
"My gosh I do apologize Mr. Bookman! I was out of line," Daisya plays along, grinning. "You know what else is out of line? Buying and putting other companies out of business! But that's alright since we'd be making even more money!"
The Lee siblings snort. Marie breathes a sigh.
"Right you are partner! Here's to more money!" Then arm in arm, the two did their deep haughty laughs while rubbing their fake mustaches.
It seems even the maid was trying hard not to let out a few giggles of her own. Meanwhile Kanda was hoping for the ground to swallow him.
"And here we are." The maid enters the lounge with the group in tow. "Please enjoy the appetizers and feel free to partake in any activity you like while I fetch Young Master Walker."
She bows and leaves, closing the door behind her.
The room they were in was spacious and unlike anything they were expecting. Pumpkins were everywhere. Some were cut open and used as either a vase for flowers or bowls for foods. Others were made into lanterns, carved in unique style patterns. Comfy looking couches were placed near bookshelves and a wide screen television, board games and a ping pong table were found at the very left, and various foods fit for the fall season were set enough to feed five families. The room smelled of pumpkin spice and cinnamon.
It looked more like a homey living room party than a formal one.
"Well, looks like there's no need to worry about behaving like the wealthy, now is there," says Komui.
"Thank god," Kanda mutters. He won't last another second with Lavi and Daisya's terrible impersonations.
"Hey, while we wait for Moyashi-chan…" the redhead pulls out one of the board games from its neat stack. "Let's play Monopoly!"
Bookman immediately disappears to the bookshelves to find himself something to read. That was enough of an answer.
"Are you nuts? Have you forgotten what happened the last time we played that monstrosity?" Kanda glares at the flashy box. It seems that game has the habit of bringing out the worst in everybody.
"Looks like someone is afraid of losing again." Daisya grins.
"Do you really want to die so badly?" He deeply regrets not bringing Mugen with him. Oh well, it's not like he hasn't been creative before.
"How about a game that won't cause a lot of mayhem?" Lenalee steps over to the boxes and pulls out a different game, a small box full of cards. "What about Uno? I haven't played this in so long!"
"That sounds fun," Marie supports, already meeting to join her at a wide wooden table. Komui follows ecstatically, while Lavi and Daisya shrug and joins them.
"Aren't you joining us Yuu?" Tiedoll asks, noticing Kanda move towards the exit. "Where are you going?"
"Restroom." Is all he utters out before leaving the group entirely.
The old man stares at the closed door with a hint of worry in his features before joining the others to play.
...
Kanda leaves the lounge quietly and looks around. Nope. No one in sight. Good.
He loops through the halls with easy stealth as he searches for the steps to the second floor. He has a vague memory from visiting last time.
As much as he tries to tell himself to wait and be patient, he couldn't. Not when the Beansprout is involved. Although Lavi stated he wasn't sure, chances are it is most likely. And if the stupid rabbit won't tell him any new secrets he's found, then he'll find them on his own. He pushes back the thought of what it could be that spooked Lavi, recalling the sight of those gruesome scares adorned all over Allen's body. Could that be part of it?
He nears the stairs, but hears footsteps descending and quickly hides behind a conveniently large set of potted plants.
"So, are you looking forward to seeing your brother?" he hears Cross ask as the footsteps slowly pass his hiding spot.
"It has been a long time," came Mana's voice. "Though I'm sure Allen will be more excited than I am, since he doesn't know Neah will be attending."
Wait, the professor has a brother?
"Ha. The look on his face will be priceless."
"Say, isn't your ex also visiting?"
All Kanda hears is a sigh and a few mumbles from the actor that he couldn't make out, for the adults were now too far from earshot. Other than the surprising fact that his English teacher has a biological sibling, nothing of the conversation was important to him. He needs to find more clues about Allen before the others grow suspicious of his absence. A good place to start would be Allen's room.
The location was easy to memorize. Kanda paced up the steps and went towards the third door to the left. He turns the doorknob, opens it a smidge, and peeks inside. Sure that there's no sign of anyone, he steps in and closes the door with a soft click.
"Alright. So far so good." Kanda looks around the room, simple like last time he'd been here. "Now where to look…"
He sees the boy's work desk which was cluttered with some crumpled up papers while more overflowed in a trash bin. He steps closer and sees a blue folder lay neat in the center of the chaos.
"Now what are you?" Kanda picks up the folder and opens it.
Music notes. Hand written neatly in a small stack. Kanda raises a brow. So the Moyashi also does music in his free time. He wonders how talented the boy is at it. He sets it back where he found it and continues looking.
Kanda tries not to be too invasive as he searches through Allen's room. He doesn't have much time and so far, he hasn't found any valuable clues. There is that chest inscribed with Allen's last name on it, but it had a combination lock on it. Kanda curses.
"Damn it! There has to be something I overlooked."
Knock-knock!
Kanda freezes, body tense and alert. Who could that be? One of the maids probably. Shit! This is bad!
Knock-knock-knock!
Hold on… that sounded like a fist on glass, not a fist on wood. Then that means…
Kanda slowly turns his head to the window. He almost jumped. Sure enough, a person was there at the other side of the glass, a young man he's never seen before with white hair shockingly similar to Allen's.
Said man waved at him and Kanda just stood there, dumbfounded,
What is he supposed to do now?
...
About a minute after Kanda left, Allen enters, greeting and thanking everyone for coming.
"Wow Allen-kun, you look great!" Lenalee says, hugging him. "And Tim looks so cute!"
Allen chuckles, cheeks flushed. "Well Timcanpy and I have to look good since we're the hosts. You all look great too! It's good to see you guys have settled in. I hope this isn't too formal…"
Lavi laughs. "Are you kidding? This place is ginormous, but if anything, this is like the larger equivalent to my living room, comfy couches and all. This place is great!"
"The festive decorations are also a nice touch," Marie compliments.
"Food's not too shabby either," Daisya talks while he stuffs his face with the appetizers. "Beats my college roommate's cooking a mile away."
Allen smiles, gingerly happy as be breathes a sigh of relief. That is, until he notices something odd. A certain someone was missing.
"Where's Kanda?"
"Oh he says he has to use the restroom, I hope you don't mind," Tiedoll answers.
"Oh, that's fine. I just thought…"
"Though what?" Lenalee asks.
Allen fiddles nervously with his fingers. "That he wouldn't show…"
Daisya barks loudly, laughing. "Dude, he wouldn't miss this if it kills him!"
The boy tilts his head, confused.
"It's true," says Marie, smiling. "While Kanda isn't a big fan of parties, he is a big fan of you Allen."
Allen feels his face heat up at that. Of course he's well aware of that now thanks to that one time he visited Kanda's place, but why does it get to him every time someone says that? For the life of him, he doesn't know.
"Aww, don't worry Moyashi-chan, you'll reunite with Yu-chan very soon!" Lavi swings an arm around his shoulder.
"It's Allen!" he shouts, annoyed that his face is heating up more. Why?! "L-Let's just play a game or something…"
"We're about to start Uno, why don't you join us?" says Komui.
"Sure." It's not poker, but it'll do.
Ten minutes into the game and he hears Bookman's voice from the couches where he's reading.
"So Allen, when will the Noah family arrive?"
"Oh, they should be here any minute." The subject brings Allen to nervousness once again. He just hopes things go well between his friends and the Noah.
"I wonder what's taking Kanda so long," says Lenalee. "It's been fifteen minutes now."
"Maybe he's lost?" wonders Lavi. "The place is huge."
"Or," says Daisya. "Maybe he has to take a looooong shit."
Marie smacks his head. Daisya winces but laughs again.
"Oh! Speaking of which, remember I pranked you and Kanda with laxatives in your cereal when we were younger?"
Lavi groans. "Don't remind me. That turned to be the worst sleepover ever. You know, you were a real bully as a kid."
"I know. I was the worst. I can't even remember how many times a day Kanda would literally try to claw my face off. Marie would always try to stop him."
"Ah, everything was so lively then." Tiedoll smiles at the memories.
Allen laughs along with the others, feeling that this Thanksgiving party is going along great so far.
So far.
Because not a minute later, the door bursts open announcing more arrivals.
"ALLEN!"
He barely blinks when he finds himself flying off the chair and his back hits the floor from a harsh impact. The source of the impact had her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. His friends stare in stunned silence.
"Ouch… Road that hurt," Allen says to the young girl. "Can you get off please?"
"Aww, but it's been forever since we last saw each other! I can't help it!" Road pouts.
"But we always talk to each other either through the phone or online."
"It's not the same in person Allen!"
"That's enough Road. You're going to give your father a heart attack." A man with slick long and unruly hair in a low ponytail held the shoulder of a taller man with similar features but with hair well kempt and was wearing a monocle. Said taller man was biting onto his handkerchief.
"Tyki, Sheril, Welcome!" Allen greets.
"Long time no see, Shounen," the shorter man, Tyki grins. "Sorry we took so long. We kinda hit a bit of a snag."
"What's wrong?"
"Well first off, Wisely and the twins disappeared on us once we arrived. Lord knows what they're up to."
"Hey wait…" Lavi stands. "You're Tyki? As in Tyki Mikk? The novelist?"
"Ah so you know my works." Tyki smiles. "You put the pieces together quite nicely. Didn't expect someone like me to be a Noah?"
"Well… no." Lavi rubs his neck awkwardly and turns to Allen. "Any more famous people you're hiding from us Allen?"
Allen had managed to pick himself off the floor, Road now hangs from his arm. He scratches his cheek with his index finger. "Um, well there's Lulu Bell, the fashion designer-"
"WHAT!?" Lenalee stands next, eyes bugged out. "She's… She's here?!"
"Hey Allen, that pretty girl is wearing some of her clothes isn't she?" says Road.
The Chinese girl faints.
"LENALEEEEE!" Komui panics as he tries to revive his sister.
"Well this escalated quickly. I'm having fun already!" Daisya grins like an idiot. Marie sighs.
"Quite a charming group of friends you've gathered Mr. Walker. The Earl will be most pleased to meet them," Sheril smiles teasingly.
"You should meet Kanda daddy. Allen has taken a particular liking to him," Road says.
"Oh you don't say~"
Allen groans and hides his face.
"Where is he anyway?" The girl looks around for the grouchy Japanese man.
"No idea but wherever he is, I'm glad he's not here right now," Allen mutters in his hand, trying to cover his red face.
God he forgot how embarrassing the Noah family can be.
If Kanda is lost somewhere, Allen hopes to all the angels and demons that he doesn't run into Wisely.
...
Kanda watches the person easily pick the lock in Allen's bedroom window and lets himself inside.
"Who the hell are you?"
"Wisely Kamelot. You must be Yuu Kanda. Pleasure," the stranger says airily as he looks around Allen's room.
Great. Another person who knows his name.
"And just what the hell are you-"
"As expected, this place is barren. Too plain. This won't do." Wisely ignores Kanda and waltzes back to the window, calling out down below. "What's taking so long down there? Hurry up!"
"Give us a fucking second you asshole!"
A giant sack comes into view from the window and is pushed inside, creating a loud thud! Then out came two familiar faces Kanda wasn't too ecstatic to see.
"Son of a bitch!" the raven headed twin cursed, stretching his back. "I'd like to see you carry this sack while climbing that stupid pa…ling…" He stares at Kanda. "The fuck are you doing here?!"
"I should be asking you guys the same," Kanda bites back. "The fuck are you doing here?"
"Oh, we were just-" the raven twin covers the blond twin's mouth. What were their names again? Allen told him before.
"We ain't telling ya shit BaKanda! You know why? Because we actually got business here! You on the other hand, do not! Now scram before I pop a fist into your sorry ass!"
Kanda's eye twitched. Now he really wished he brought Mugen. He doesn't remember the raven twin acting this vulgar to him before, but he'll be regretting it.
He cracks his knuckles. "I'd like to see you try circus freak."
"What did you just call me…" the raven twin spoke ominously. The blond twin panicked and held him back by the abdomen with both arms. The raven twin paid no mind to him and kept his enraged eyes on Kanda, eyes that went from dark brown to golden yellow. "Say that again. I dare you…"
"B-Brother he doesn't mean it like that," his twin tries to reason. "He doesn't know."
Now this is really different from last time, Kanda thought with a sense of unease. What's with this guy all of a sudden? And what's with the eyes? Is that a Noah thing? Did say something to piss him off like this?
"No shit Sherlock," came Wisely's voice and Kanda raised a brow at the out of place sentence. Was he talking to him? But he said nothing to the guy.
"Devit, you're being overly sensitive again," he continues. "This guy has no idea what you being angry for. If anything, he's only referring to your stupid get-up, which looks like a trend that died long ago in the 80's."
"You shut your face!" Devit yells at him, but his eyes return to normal. He's still angry, but hearing his brother whimper and cling tighter must've snapped him back fully. "Shit, Jasdero I'm sorry! Look, I'm fine see? I'm not mad anymore."
Jasdero remains quiet, not facing anyone, his body shivering.
"Hey," Devit holds his twin by the shoulders. "Remember why we're here? We're here to decorate Allen's room, right? Just like we planned. Let's do that okay?"
It takes a while before Jasdero gives a small nod.
"Great! Now that we have that settled, we'll leave you both to it," Wisely strolls to the door. "Let's go Kanda."
"What?" Kanda stays rooted to the spot, unsure what to do but sure as hell isn't just going to follow orders. He's not done here!
"I know what you're looking for. You're not going to find it here. Now let's go."
The Japanese man stood rigid. He knows? No that can't be right. Just how can he-
"Do you really want to know? Then come with me. We never met so let's take this as an opportunity to get to know each other. If all goes well, I'll even answer some questions you have stuck in that head of yours," he smiles in a way that was very… off-putting. Kanda feels a chill up his spine seeing those same golden yellow eyes lock on him like Devit's. Now he's sure it's a Noah thing.
"Tch." He already doesn't like this guy, but if it means getting the answers he wants, then he'll have to put up with him. He follows Wisely out, leaving the twins behind. The door closes behind them.
"I guess I should apologize on Devit's behalf. He can be a bit dramatic. Jasdero too."
"What was that all about?"
"Oh they're just upset that they were told about you and your friends' arrival the last minute… that and you triggered an unpleasant memory the both of them would rather forget. Not that you knew."
"I thought you guys were okay with us coming over."
"We all are. Just not them. They're the type to hold a grudge," he waves his hand nonchalantly. "Trust issues and all that jazz. You get it. Anyway, you want to know more about Allen right? The scars and how he got them?"
"And just how do you know that's what I'm after?"
"Because knowing is my specialty," Wisely says with that smile of his. It was really creeping him out and ticking him off.
"So what you can read minds?"
"You catch on quick, even though you just guessed and said it as a joke. And I didn't have to bring up any embarrassing personal topics you've kept to yourself over the years. Yes, I can read minds. It's an ability I've had since birth and an ability that marks me as a Noah."
"So I'm dealing with a nosey psychic. Great."
"Don't think so ill of me Kanda. I do know how to respect a person's privacy."
"I'm sure you do." He doesn't buy it.
Wisely merely shrugs and stops in front of a door. He opens it and steps inside. Kanda follows tentatively. They were inside a study, spacious and consisted of warm colors such as brown and red. Wisely plops on a couch nestled in front of a fireplace, on foot over the other on an armrest while his arms are crossed behind his head. Kanda takes a seat on an armchair.
Silence engulfs the room and after a minute, Kanda gets irritated.
"Well?"
The Noah opens a lazy eye. "What do you mean 'well'? I said I'll answer your questions, but how can I answer them if you have not asked me anything?"
"You already know what I want to know!" Kanda wonders if he's annoying him on purpose. "Now tell me how Moyashi got those scars!"
"How he got them or who gave them to him?"
He pauses a moment before glaring.
"Both."
"Hmm, alright then." Wisely sits up and faces Kanda, eyes on him steel as he speaks, his aura eerily serious compared to his lax careless mood. "I'll start with who. Have you heard of Tamaki Tsu?"
Kanda takes the time to think on it. The name does sound familiar. Where has he heard it?
"He's known in many countries worldwide as one of the most wanted men in criminal records. To this day he still hasn't been caught." Wisely continues. "He is Allen's attacker. And no, it wasn't just some random encounter. Allen told you didn't he? That there was someone in his life before Mana whom he trusted."
"I remember…" Oh yes did he remember. Potently he remembers the look of Allen's pained face once he told him his story involving such a man. To think that he was friends with a serial killer, not that a child would've known. The thought disgusted Kanda.
"His crimes involve illegal experimentation on, well just about anything. Anything that he finds 'fascinating, rare, and interesting'. He'd stop at nothing to figure out what makes that something tick. Allen was just another target for his research. With that said, it's not hard to imagine how he suffered those scars, now is it?"
Kanda's knuckles were turning white a how hard he tightened his fists, nails digging into his skin.
The sound of a ringtone suddenly erupts, drowning out the silence. Not taking his eyes off of Kanda's strained form, Wisely fishes out his phone, having a pretty good idea who's calling him.
"Yo." He distances the phone from his ear once shouting goes off from the other line. "Yes I'm with Kanda right now. We're just talking." He speaks evenly once the shouting stops. "No, he's still sane. Why is that so hard to believe? ...Hm, alright. We'll be right down. Goodbye father." He hangs up. "We should go. You're friends are starting to worry."
Kanda almost didn't hear him. He was too busy trying to wrap his head around this bit of info. And inside, he was trying desperately not to grab the nearest object within arm's reach and smash it, tear it apart, do something to relieve his anger.
How does no one know about this? What about those at the orphanage? Did they hate him that much to allow this to happen? If so then they are sick twisted bastar-
SMACK!
"Fuck!" Kanda shouts, rubbing a sore spot on his head. He stares at the hardcover book on the carpet floor, then at Wisely's impassive face.
"Did you just throw a fucking book at me?"
Wisely says nothing, choosing to stand and leave.
"Oi!"
"Just so you know, what I just told you, I only scratched the surface of what happened that day."
Kanda stares at his back, eyes wide.
"You have no idea how lucky he is to be alive." The tone in Wisely's voice changed. He forced a chuckle. "Reading minds... at times I find it a curse rather than a gift, because I'm always afraid of looking into Allen's mind, to see what he saw, how he felt. Even now, I bet those feelings still linger sometimes. That day, he blames himself for everything that's happened. Even worse…"
Wisely faces him with a feral grin that didn't match the pain in his eyes. Kanda would be lying if he said that look didn't scare him. But it didn't compare to the Noah's next chilling words.
"That day, Allen lost the will to live. In a way, he got his wish. His old self died, and now he's become what you see today."
AN: Hahaha... Yeah I got nothing else to say. My only wish is for this error to be fixed for I can post new chapters the usual way.
It's been so long since I watched/read DGM that I kinda forgot Wisely's plus Jasdevi's personality traits and behaviors. I hope I didn't mess up here...
