Been a while, huh? Over a year. Actually, no, it hasn't been that long. You see, I originally set out to upload this chapter early January, like I had on DeviantArt. But, when I tried, this site was kind of glitchy and I couldn't figure out how to add this chapter. But now I can. Huh. So yeah, follow me on Deviant Art (MoonSpider95) for uninterrupted continuation of this series. Seriously. You should have been able to read this like 4 months ago. And, I'll be trying to add a new chapter soon too. So heads up. :)

And also, I feel the need to clarify something. After uploading the last chapter, I received a particularly nasty review. Nothing I got really upset over, though. Like how could she have been an FBI agent when she is so young, when I clearly mentioned chapter one that she was not. A lot of the criticisms I think was just a result of skimming. But there was one thing that was a fair point I think needs to be addressed. Where in the description it reads "Don't like, don't read" - but how would you know if you like it until after you read it?

Well that, dear readers, if it confused you, is fairly simple. I was talking about it being an xReader story. Therefore, if you have prior knowledge that you do not xReader stories, and you know that this is indeed an xReader series, then chances are you will not like this series and should not waste your time reading it. Get it? Got it? Good. On with the story.

After the incident with L, you felt guiltier than ever. He kissed you. He had feelings for you. And you pushed him into the ocean, staining his clothes with his sweets. You must have humiliated him. What was worse was that you couldn't even tell how bad you hurt him. Yeah, it was an embarrassing fall, but how much did it mean? You had a feeling that the kiss meant something to L, like a confession to you, but he said that he just wanted to kiss a girl before he died. He was putting his life at risk during this mission, after all. Maybe any girl would have done the job, raging hormones and all that. Maki, of course, is just a child. If he brought any other agent along, likely specifically any other female agent, then maybe he would have started kissing her like that too. Maybe it really wasn't anything special.

L wouldn't look you in the eyes, but that wasn't anything new. As far as you could tell, he never looked anyone in the eyes, so it was harder to see if he was still having rough feelings about this. The man came off so emotionless. However, with him being that emotionless, wouldn't that make it even more of a red flag that he displayed love and embarrassment? Wouldn't that mean that he had to be more determined than anything to kiss you? Maybe it was special.

You were still debating with yourself over whether or not that kiss meant anything, but for now, your orders were clear: play the decoy again. This meant driving the pastry truck throughout Japan while L took the kids to a Dr. Matsudo to see if a cure could be synthesized. Maki was being so impulsive to inject herself. Normally in this situation the answer would be not to develop a cure, therefore making the virus not safe to use for anyone. Now that the Dr. Nakaido was dead, the 'peace' organization would likely be trying to find a cure itself so it can use the virus without worry. Though, to L's suspicions, the head may not care about that for much longer and sacrifice the members of the organization as well, to 'cleanse' the planet.

The whole plot disgusted you. You would give anything to go back to the serial killer in Los Angeles. Even knowing it brought up some history with L.

One of the lucky parts of this scenario, though, was that the truck had gadgets everywhere, including a TV. L and the children should have been on a bus by this point and those three being out in public worried you. So, you flipped the channel to the news which said, "A girl who is apparently infected with a dangerous virus has just escaped from the hospital where she had been receiving treatment. Joining us in the studio is Dr. Kimiko Kujo from the Infectious Disease Center."

Your eyes widened. That was the woman. K. That was the one who killed Maki's father, the one behind everything. Your heart sank. This public announcement. It was talking about Maki, telling everyone. They were still in public. They could be spotted. But…no one knows what she looks like, right? L uses a lot of fake names. He can evade people.

"Dr. Kujo, could you explain what kind of virus this is?"

"Of course. This particular virus is extremely contagious and so far no effective vaccine has been developed for it. Once symptoms appear, recovery is impossible. This virus is truly lethal."

"This is a picture of the girl, Maki Nakaido." Well, there went your hopes. Here picture, there on the big screen. And she looked so cute in her school uniform… "Her current whereabouts are unknown. She is twelve years old and attends an elementary school in –"

You turned it off. L, Maki, Takeru, be ok…

A couple days had passed with no contact from L. You didn't know if they were caught. The news said nothing, though you had doubts it would; their capture would have been kept secret, you were sure. It was also possible that L had been moving forward in the plan, so you kept your part. You kept playing decoy, though there were no more attacks on your life. It was boring on your end, which made you worried that all of the action, all of the danger, was where L was.

Your suspicions were confirmed when L contacted you that night through the computer the truck was equipped with. Dr. Matsudo succeeded in developing a cure, though it has not been tested. It would be our only hope, because time was running out. Maki knew the ones responsible were drawing near, so she set out to find them, to kill them, and was captured. He set up a rendezvous point for him to catch a ride with you to find Maki.

You were fuming; the stress was getting to you. When you saw L, you were almost in tears. You hid that in anger. How dare he go for so long without contacting you? How dare he keep you driving around Japan? How dare he let Maki get kidnapped? L was sitting, perched like when you were both by the Oceanside, on this metal loop protruding from the grass like a statue for who knows what purpose. Perched again. The memory flared back to you. You got angrier. L slid in the passenger seat, saying, "It never crossed my mind that a child would risk her life…for revenge."

"She was watching when they killed her father! What'd you expect?!"

He paused for a moment, head tilted toward the sky in thought. "…I suppose you're right."

That's it. He was just agreeing with you, so you started to simmer down again. He was the Greatest Detective. He had his ways. That's how he was able to get to you. That…had to be it. L also told you that Kujo was planning to flee the country, meaning you were right again: she doesn't care that there is no antidote to save her men. She fully plans on wiping out humanity. But, by taking Maki with her, she convinced the men that an antidote has been made by having the child in their possession.

L explained further, "They'll be posing as emergency medical staff, transferring a surgery patient. That'll allow them to bypass security and board a plane, then hijack it."

"Where are they going?!"

"Most likely the US."

The rest of the ride was quiet. You liked to tell yourself that maybe he was still mad at you, even days later, but something told you he was only thinking of Maki and Dr. Kujo. After all, he had to feel betrayed that another 'letter' was doing this, right? Though, if that were true, then the kiss really didn't mean anything – just crossing something off his bucket list, for lack of better terms. You wanted to apologize. You wanted to say that, even though you weren't sure how it would work out, that maybe, possibly, they could try again.

But, without knowing for sure that he wanted to kiss you and not just a girl, you weren't willing to take the chance. You would just embarrass yourself, you thought. It really did mean nothing.

The morning of the departure came, but it took all night to get there. Apparently L doesn't drive because he never even offered to switch spots with you so you could sleep. With everything in full view, something did seem amiss. "L! The plane is about to take off!"

You sped the Angel Crepe truck as fast as you could to the side of the departing plane. L leapt out of the truck and began running to the stairway that led to the plane's entrance. It was detached, the door having to be a few feet from the last step. Once at the top, L jumped from the stairs to the plane's entrance, only hanging on by his hands. You were amazed, shocked with your mouth hanging open, as you saw L display physical ability you never knew he had and pulled himself up with a bag full of antidote-filled needles at his side. You could not see what happened from that point on. The fate of the world and so many virus victims was up to L now.

Over an hour later, the plane had never gotten far off the ground. The victims were all given antidote shots, including Maki and Dr. Kujo. You assumed L already had a shot, considering he was in a plane full of infected people and came out as the picture of health. Good job, Dr. Matsudo.

The doctor and Takeru both gave L a thumb up as he came out of the plane. What would become of him, you wondered? As such a genius he is, he would most likely be the newest child at Wammy's House. L mentioned to you that Takeru solved a problem left by Dr. Nakaido which was the doorway to developing a vaccine. The kid had a bright future ahead of him.

L walked down stairs again, leaving the airplane, and you met him halfway. You had to say something to bridge the gap between you again. "It was an honor working with you again, L. I would be happy to work with you, at any time I can be of help. Hopefully, though, next time won't be as deadly." You wanted to say that, also, you wanted to see him under 'better conditions'. That you wanted to see him outside of when he recruited you. That you just wanted to hang out, if not just as friends, but…were you even friends? You were so unsure of L's feelings. Even under an investigation, it would be enough.

"Ms. (Last Name), I'm glad that I could put my trust in you. Thank you very much." Once again, he didn't even look at you. But, again, he never really looks at anyone to their face. You couldn't read him, but you at least knew that he trusts you. He had to; you pulled through for him on two cases now.

Maki was receiving care from paramedics, making sure the cure worked indefinitely. Takeru ran up to L and L grabbed his hand, guiding him away. You were right. He was, in fact, on his way to Wammy's House. However, with nothing left to do, you went back inside the airport and bought a plane ticket back to your college. So much time had passed that you needed to reschedule you courses and make sense of whatever L did to your records to make extra classes a suitable cover for your family.

You were happy to return to normalcy, to return to studying for the career you truly wanted. Now though, you couldn't help but wonder if you made a better agent than a (career). And you couldn't help but wonder if those thoughts were there because his kiss was still radiating in your mind, a tingle left on your lips.

L, the World's Greatest Detective. Pfft, what kind of boyfriend would he make anyways?

Please, please, please let there be another case…
