Author's note: Thanks to everyone for reading! Answer to the reviews are at the bottom.
So I am not dead. If you are reading this after the embarrassingly long time that has passed since my last update – I dare not calculate how long it has been – I am giving you the biggest thanks. I am sorry I have abandoned the story for so long, but life got in the way and sometimes I just can't write properly no matter how hard I try. I prefer to wait and give you the best work I can come up with. As it is, the chapter turned out to be quite long, so I hope this at least compensates for the long wait just a little. Thank you for sticking up with me and showing me your support. It's amazing. You are the best.
Without further ado:
CHAP 36
SETTING THE STAGE
Machinations before leaving
21st March 214 – Konohakagure, Marketplace
Neji had always suspected that Katora Akimi liked being secretive, it was something about the way she looked around and spoke carefully. So he wasn't surprised when the girl started to write indications on a spare scroll – it was common knowledge she was a Fūinjutsu junkie and she always started writing down her ideas wherever and whenever she got one, so nothing suspicions there. She was really good at being sneaky... and as he started to read her message he realised Akimi brought the secrecy thing to the next level.
"Leave the market and take the panoramic route around Konoha. You know where my house is, Hyūga-san, but don't go for the front entrance. Konoha's river is diverted into the compound and where that happens there is a backdoor. Just stand near the wall and use the following handseals sequence." Neji had quickly memorised the seventeen seals, trying to understand why Akimi and Naruto even had reason to have a blasted backdoor.
His Byakugan detected Akimi's amused smirk. 'Having a back door is fun.' she wrote, before putting away the scroll. She started walking again, whistling.
Neji struggled to keep up his usual stern and blank expression. He thought Naruto was the strange one, but apparently Akimi was very baffling in her own way. Besides him Hinata was looking a little shocked.
"Everything all right, Hyūga-sama?" the vendor asked.
Hinata looked up. "O-of c-curse, Hideyoshi-san." she politely whispered. "W-will y-you show me y-your r-rice?"
Neji mentally sighed. He needed to help his cousin crack her shell. Who knew, perhaps Uzumaki Naruto and Katora Akimi could assist in that endeavour as well.
Few moments later, Katora Residence – Backdoor
Shino was walking slowly, his hands in his pockets. He had a lot on his mind: his father had been truthful enough, although he only mentioned the threat regarding Naruto, knowing his teammates would fill him on the details.
It was somehow unfair that Team 7 had so little time to respite after the invasion, but such was the life they had chosen. But what was going on was a little too extreme even for a shinobi's standard. Someone was hunting Naruto down and while Shino didn't really care about the fox, he didn't like it was putting his teammate in danger. Moreover, something was off with both Akimi and Naruto. Shino knew him well enough to see he was very upset the day before.
Then there was Danzō. Shino shivered thinking of the cold and unforgiving man covered in bandages that almost got him – and took his older brother figure instead. After Torune left, Shino had become silent and quiet, too much even for an Aburame. And now Danzō was threatening Naruto and possibly the whole village as well.
Honestly, even as collected as he usually was, Aburame Shino was almost about to explode. He was very annoyed, angry really, at everything that was going on. It was a good thing Jiraiya-sama was taking them out of the village. Intensive training sounded marvellous: letting out some steam was just what they all needed.
And even more honestly, being a somewhat active part of the political intrigue was... thrilling. Shino smirked. While he wasn't sure he really wanted to become a spy master – Shino wasn't so fond of human contact – he was eager to hear what Akimi's thoughts really were. He was certain she had planned some sort of compromise... the girl wasn't going to leave Naruto for extensive periods of time, that much was clear.
Shino raised his head as he received the feedback from the Kikaichū he had sent out to scout the area point where Konoha river was diverted into the Katora's compound. He stopped on his tracks for a moment. 'Interesting.' The smirk widened on his face and since he was pretty sure no one was around he hastened through the last part of the path.
"Well, why would you be here, Hyūga-san?" Shino asked to Neji, appearing in front of the black haired genin. He crossed his arms in front of his chest and nodded respectfully at the clan's heiress.
Neji just stared blankly and the duo faced each other with a certain challenging demeanour. The Aburame and Hyūga clans had never been rivals, at least not directly. To be frank the Hyūga's arrogance got on the nerves of the majority of Konoha in any case.
Besides, Shino hadn't forgotten how Neji had behaved during the Exams.
"We are here to see Uzumaki-san and Katora-san."
Shino raised an eyebrow. Was Neji using an honorific because they were promoted? Or had he changed because of Naruto's ass kicking? The blonde truly had a gift. The Aburame restrained a smile and adjusted his sunglasses. "And I assume you were directed here, to the backdoor."
"Katora-san gave me indications, Aburame-san."
Shino nodded. Very interesting. What was all about? It looked like his discussion with his teammates had to wait, but he was intrigued. "I see." he nodded. "Then you won't mind opening the passage, right?"
Neji almost sighed. What the hell was up with this team? That level of secrecy wasn't normal. Nevertheless, whatever had upset Hinata-sama so greatly wasn't normal either. And Team Seven was the best bet they had to get some help without provoking Hiashi-sama's rage. So he nodded curtly and prepared to execute the handseals sequence.
Meanwhile, Konoha's ANBU Headquarters
Morino Ibiki stared at Kakashi, gaping. Then his face became contorted in a deep scowl. "Brainwashing?"
The ANBU Commander, sitting behind his desk, tensed. Tenzō placed a hand on his face and sighed deeply. Uzuki Yūgao remained still and composed under her cat mask.
Kakashi nodded sombrely. "So it would seem. It's subtle and very hard to detect. Aburame Shibi has spent years trying to find hard proof of this, but has found nothing concrete. Given the situation, he came forward and Hokage-sama believed him."
"I don't even want to think what would happen if Danzō were to become Hokage." Ibiki took off his bandana and massaged his scarred cranium. "It must not happen."
"That's why we are meeting." the ANBU commander spoke up. "Question is, Ibiki, can you find any proof of this? I trust in Shibi-san's instincts, but we need to know how it was done, so we can find out who else has been brainwashed."
"I can't say for certain, but I am confident I can find out what techniques they used. I can imagine how someone like Danzō would have proceeded in something like this."
Kakashi crossed his arms, clearly hearing the disdain in the other jōnin's voice. He wondered what Danzō could have done to Ibiki. Then again the old bandaged ninja had wronged basically the whole village and those who didn't hate him were either power-hungry or ruthless people.
"The true problem is how to arrange for interrogation without arousing Danzō's suspicions." Ibiki continued. "Such an examination would require time and effort."
The ANBU Commander raised and turned the other way, clearly deep in thought. "Evaluation for ANBU services. Sarutobi-sama may issue a mandatory extraordinary recruitment to cope with the aftermath of the invasion."
Ibiki nodded. "Yes, that could work. Now that I know what to look for, I can do so without them realising it. Danzō will probably will happy to have a chance to infiltrate ANBU and won't be too suspicious."
"Except for the fact that ANBU may be already been infiltrated." Kakashi observed.
"Indeed." the Commander crossed his hands behind his back. "Which is why is important that we find out who is loyal and can be trusted to help. Kakashi, get Asuma to help and focus on the jōnin. I am sure Hokage-sama will update Nara-san on the matter very soon and he will help as he is the Jōnin Commander. Ibiki, you and Anko focus on the T&I Division, I am pretty sure you will be joined by Inoichi-san. His mind jutsu will come in handy. Tenzō, you will help me with ANBU operatives. Yūgao, I want you to handle Hokage-sama's protective details. We have no time to lose..."
"Kakashi-sempai, what about your student?" Tenzō asked. "Aren't you afraid he will be used as a political pawn?"
Kakashi eye-smiled. "Jiraiya-sama is going to take care of that. Naruto is going to be quite safe." he scratched his chin. "This reminds me, I must go and say goodbye. I hope you don't mind."
"No, thank you for your insight, Kakashi." the Commander turned and nodded. "I trust you will be unnoticed even in your exit."
"Count on that." Kakashi smirked and crossed his finger, disappearing with a puff of smoke.
"Ah, Kage Bunshin." Ibiki chuckled. "That Uzumaki brat is really creating a trend."
"Kage Bunshin no jutsu!" Naruto exclaimed.
"Really, why?" asked Akimi.
"I like it." Naruto shrugged with a mischievous grin. "You go down to the vault and finish packing for us, will you?"
The two clones nodded enthusiastically and turned to the girl. "You have the food supplies for us?"
"Here." the girl produced several scrolls and started to talk animatedly with them, starting to giving instruction about how to better seal their supplies.
Naruto smiled at the scene, but then couldn't help but sigh. He was still feeling a little exhausted, but was looking forward to the training trip. He sat down on the couch and took a deep breath to relax.
"They are here." Akimi announced sitting near him and touching his arm in silent comfort. "Shino is with them."
Naruto nodded. "It's good to have something to focus upon. I wonder why Ero-sennin hasn't make contact yet."
Akimi shrugged. "He probably has a lot to do before leaving. He'll send word soon."
"And we are ready, so there is nothing to worry about. Right." Naruto smiled forcefully just as Shino entered the sitting room, followed by their unusual guests.
"Morning." Shino curtly greeted.
Akimi heard the tension in his voice: he was upset as well. Naruto noticed too and immediately started to panic. He was easily convinced that people would hate him because of the fox, a sad left-over from his childhood. Akimi was really going to kick some serious civilian ass sooner or later. She tilted her head and observed their teammates and restrained a satisfied smirk as she sensed the storage scrolls he was carrying.
"Hello, Shino. Curious to see you here, or not..." she saluted back, lifting a hand. "Want some winter melon? You won't believe the quality of the shipment I acquired today. In fact, I've bought a very large amount, I do hope you'll be around to eat it."
Neji frowned. He had the impression that the girl had just enquired about something entirely different than a banal offer for food.
"Indeed, your visit at the market has been very productive today, hasn't it?" Shino fixed his sunglasses and approached the couch. "I am not hungry at the moment, but I believe there will be many occasions in the future when I'll be able to accept your generous offerings, Akimi."
Naruto's shoulders relaxed and Akimi nodded with a small smile. Team 7 had understood each other: Shino knew about everything and was coming along the training trip. The duo made room for Shino to sit down next to them.
"Hyūga-hime, Hyūga-san." Akimi raised and bowed in greeting. She indicated the couch opposite to where they were sitting "Welcome, please have a seat. Some tea?"
Hinata flinched and Neji frowned.
"We haven't got much time. We are expected back at the compound very soon." Neji said. "Thank you for your hospitality."
"You got us intrigued." Naruto spoke up with his usual sunny grin. "So what's going on?"
Akimi elbowed him.
"Of right, the seals." Naruto yawned and started an activation sequence. A blue array appeared on the walls for a few seconds. Akimi followed suit, activating smaller but more powerful protection seals around the couches. Then she also activated her beloved False Conversation Seal and nodded in satisfaction. Shino smirked: he had expected no less.
"If anyone asks, you came here to ask Naruto for a rematch in the form of sparring, Hyūga-san." Akimi concluded.
"You are very through, Katora-san." the boynodded. "Given the circumstances, mayhap we can get past the formalities of surnames. It will get confusing otherwise."
Hinata nodded a little frantically at his right.
Akimi tilted her head. 'What's up with her? She is even more nervous that she was at the market. And one would think that the heiress of one of the most prominent clans in Konoha would be more confident. When I called her "hime", her proper title, she jolted.' she ordered Kaera to keep a keen eye on the younger girl, something was up.
"That seems acceptable, Neji-san." Akimi observed. "Please take a seat, though. The fact you need to be swift doesn't mean you need to be uncomfortable."
The cousins complied with her request and Hinata almost stumbled. It was pretty clear she was focused on something else, besides the fact she almost didn't raise her gaze and seemed intent to observe her shoes intently. The way she hid her hands behind long sleeves and touched her hands continuously screamed shyness.
"So what's up?" Naruto asked again with his usual friendly manners. "And, Neji, I actually look forward to spar with you, so let's do it soon, right?"
"I suppose it would be interesting to see if you can beat me since I stopped underestimating you, Naruto." Neji smirked. "I cannot answer your question, though, it's Hinata-sama that needed to talk with you, not me."
Naruto smirked back at the boy in defiance then turned to girl. "Well, tell us what is wrong, then!" he exclaimed. "We are listening, dattebayo."
Hinata became as red as a tomato in response. "I-I..." she started, stuttering.
Akimi searched her mind: Hinata Hyūga was in the same academy class as Konohamaru and his friends, so she had taken care of checking her file out the same as the other students. Iruka-sensei had remarked in his report upon the young girl's gentleness and intelligence. In her position, kindness was possibly making her life very difficult. The Hyūga clan was somehow brutal. In fact, her grades in taijutsu were poor considered her family's general skills, but she had an excellent chakra control. It also meant most of her kinsmen probably underestimated her, so they would keep their guard lowered around her. That meant only one thing.
"You overhead something, Hinata-hime?" Akimi guessed, keeping her voice soft. "Something dangerous?"
Hinata was startled. "Y-yes, K-Katora-san."
"You seem surprised I am using your title." Akimi observed. "I know it's not really that common anymore so probably no one outside of official contexts would use it, but it's almost as like no one ever used it."
Hinata became even redder, gasping while searching for the right answer.
Neji tensed beside her. "Akimi-san..." he warned.
"No need to get riled up, Neji-san. Don't get protective on me." Akimi narrowed her eyes. "That would also make you a little hypocritical as it of now."
Neji froze, his fists clenched, but didn't say anything out loud. He knew very well the three young ninja sitting in front of him could be deadly.
Akimi moved her piercing gaze elsewhere once she was sure Neji wasn't going to protest anymore. Her face softened. "As for your, Hinata-hime, you are the heiress of the Hyūga clan, yes or no?"
Hinata didn't know how to answer. She was, but everyone thought her sister was more worthy than her. The majority of the clan didn't think much of her.
"You shouldn't care about what they think." Naruto said as if he was reading her mind. Hinata looked down, her embarrassment raising. "Prove them wrong, you are the heiress of the clan if you want to be. You can become a strong kunoichi if you want to. Just don't give up, dattebayo!"
Hinata smiled and raised her gaze. Naruto-kun was speaking to her, noticing her... and he was as kind as she had imagined. He also was as close to Akimi as everyone said, if the way there were sitting next to one other was any indication. Hinata felt her stomach clench.
Akimi sighed. So there was someone else in the village that had realised how extraordinary Naruto-kun was, eh? A small part of her was both happy and proud Naruto was being recognised as he deserved, but a bigger part felt a rising and fierce possessiveness growing. She took a deep breath to calm down. There was no reason to get angry.
"T-Thank y-you, N-Naruto-kun." Hinata babbled, her cheek redder than ever. She glanced briefly ahead, noticing the blonde's gentle but surprised face and Akimi's eyes harden visibly for few seconds. That prompted her to lower her head again, very embarrassed.
Shino raised an eyebrow and noticed how Akimi's shoulder tightened ever so slightly. 'There is potential for awkwardness here.' he thought, preparing to diffuse the situation if the need arose.
"We should get to the point." Akimi spoke up, her voice a little chilling. "We have a very busy day ahead and I imagine so do you, Neji-san, Hinata-hime."
"You don't have to worry about a thing!" Naruto continued for her, as it was pretty much normal for them. "No one is going to get past Akimi-chan's seals easily. You can speak freely."
At those words, Neji looked around, his Byakugan active. He was amazed by the complexity of seals all around. And he could see an even more powerful and wider concentration of chakra and seal patterns below them, on the...
"You are here to talk, not to snoop around." Shino remarked, quite hostilely.
Akimi giggled. "Why, Neji-san, did you see past the protection around my vault?"
The boy barely restrained himself from rubbing his eyes. The seals had started to glow brightly and he could not make anything out expect the general shape of the room downstairs. "No. You are more skilled than I thought, Akimi-san."
The girl smirked smugly in response and took the porcelain jug from the table in front of the couches. "I shall make tea while you talk, Hinata-hime."
"T-tea..." Hinata stuttered. "I saw my father having tea with a strange man."
Akimi's movements froze at those words and she barely managed not to drop the jug from her grip. She didn't have to look to know her teammates thought the same thing as her. It was extremely easy to channel her frustration into Katon chakra and therefore warm up the water for tea.
"It was a bandaged, creepy man? Walking with a stick and talking with an annoying air of superiority?" Naruto asked.
Hinata nodded, visibly scared. "M-my f-father called h-him..."
"Danzō." Shino finished for her, his voice dark.
Akimi frowned. She could count the times she heard Shino this distressed. He was probably hiding something about Danzō... then again the Team hadn't had the chance to discuss within the safety of the Vault in ages. She expected to be informed about whatever was going on very soon.
"Y-yes." Hinata babbled.
"Hinata, the conversation you overhead is probably more important than you can possibly imagine." Naruto said, his voice unusually serious but with a soft expression. "You need to tell us everything you remember about it. Things you noticed, the exact words if you remember..."
Hinata gulped. "A-all r-right." she replied, looking down. "I-it..."
"This is one of the bravest thing I've ever witnessed and trust me I had my fair share after spending so much time with Naruto." Shino spoke up suddenly. "I know what the pressure of being a clan heir is, Hinata-hime, and you shouldn't let that weight press you down."
Hinata became once again very red, but then took a deep breath and started talking. Akimi and Shino interrupted a couple of times with questions, which coupled with Hinata's stuttering made the tale quite long. But at the end the young girl's voice wavered less and less, at least until she told about her running away. It was quite obvious she was ashamed.
Akimi snorted.
Neji glared at her. It was clear to him that Hinata-sama had a crush on Naruto, but respected Akimi a lot, which created a subtle but very distinct conflict within his cousin. He didn't expect Akimi to exploit her position to mock Hinata.
"Don't say a word, Neji-san. You need to stop thinking you can know my mind just because you got those amazing eyes of yours. Sight isn't everything." Akimi said, irritated. "Insight is a much more rare and prized quality and it's obvious you have it, Hinata-hime. This confirms what I already believed about your clan."
Hinata looked at the other girl, still embarrassed. "A-and what it is?"
Naruto chuckled. "Akimi-chan is too polite to say it out loud, so allow me." he bowed a little. "Most of the Hyūga are idiotic judgmental fools with long sticks shoved up their asses, much like Neji used to be. You really need to stop caring about what they think of you."
Neji's eyes bulged. "You..."
"I believe he would say that to their faces without problems, so please don't provoke him." Shino hastily warned.
Hinata frowned instead. "But I..."
"You need to be proud of yourself and of your abilities. So look up and speak with confidence and believe in yourself." Naruto continued passionately. "You were scared about what you overheard and you ran, but that isn't something to be ashamed of, it was the smart thing to do."
"If they had discovered you eavesdropping, the consequences would have been severe. I do think Danzō wouldn't have qualms about killing you, if not for the fact you are Hiashi-dono's daughter. But I am sure he would have nevertheless found some way to ensure your silence." Akimi explained. "Unpleasant ways. So running away was smart, not cowardly. And since you acted about what you overhead and you sought us out, to warn us because Danzō mentioned Naruto, you clearly aren't a coward. Shino was right, you were very brave."
Naruto nodded fervently to show he agreed with the words wholeheartedly.
Shino didn't move, but once again spoke calmly. "The facts point out you'll become a good kunoichi in the future, Hinata-hime."
Neji looked in amazement as his cousin's shoulders became straighter ever so slightly, even if her face had became redder and redder at the unusual compliments.
"So what are you going to do?" Hinata asked, worriedly.
"We are going to inform Sarutobi-sama of course." Akimi replied. "What you discovered it's very interesting."
Shino nodded. "I suppose that Hokage-sama would have already expected Danzō would ask the Hyūga clan for help, it's quite logical. Why do you ask? Many of the other clans either despise him or support the Third loyally..."
"Or both." Akimi continued. "The Hyūga's position is not that clear, though, and your clan is powerful enough to sway the Council if needed. Hiashi-dono's response was very unexpected on the other hand. Sarutobi-sama is going to have a great advantage now."
"You don't understand." Neji spoke up, having being deep in thought for a while. "Elder Hideyoshi is very influential. Most of the main house follows his lead."
"And most of your clan is opposed to breaking tradition anyway, Neji-san." Shino observed. "It seems that there is indeed a very big problem."
"Danzō doesn't really need the support of Hiashi-dono in the council, but the support of the jōnin who will vote the Hokage is precious. The Hyūga clan has the highest number of jōnin." Akimi mused, getting up and pacing around the couch. "However, while it is true that the Main House would like a more conservative leader such as Danzō, if we consider the Branch House things are different."
"The Branch house would never go against the Main House. We are taught to protect and serve them from birth."
"You are taught that through fear." Akimi replied, stopping and looking straight at him. "Through fear and pain."
Naruto nodded from the couch. "Now, don't tell me you don't resent the ones who keep trying to fry your brain cells, Neji."
The Hyūga genin shot on his feet. "How dare you to...!? Wait, how do you know?"
"Really?" Akimi asked. "You have a seal on your forehead, just because it's covered by your Hitai-ate it doesn't mean I can't deduce what it does. Besides, it's common knowledge that the seal is meant to protect the Byakugan upon death. That it's achieved by chakra burns around the area of the eyes, which in turn would affect the nervous system if the person were still alive, causing severe pain and headaches."
Neji was gaping. "You got all of that from just sitting in front of me?"
Naruto and Akimi looked at each other, remaining silent.
After a while Shino smirked and took pity of the shocked Neji. "They are both good at Fūinjutsu, but they are deadly when they work together as a team. I bet Naruto started analysing your seal as early as during your fight, Neji-san."
"What are they doing now?" Hinata asked.
"Talking." Shino shrugged. "That's quite normal. Are you done yet?"
Akimi nodded at him.
"Good. Now, I am pretty certain that Hokage-sama can convince Hiashi-dono to support him and in turn Hiashi-dono can convince the Branch House and some of the Main House to support the Third." Shino continued. "After all, the jōnin vote secretly in the Hokage's elections. It would make sense your fellow kinsmen wouldn't vote a man that would make things worse for them, especially if your own head is open to change, Neji-san."
The boy was still quite puzzled. "I suppose."
"Do you think your father would support a way to eliminate the curse seal, Hinata-hime?" asked Akimi.
"I don't know." the young girl timidly answered.
"Trust your insight and try to gauge what is reaction was when Elder Hideyoshi brought Naruto's promise up." Akimi gently prompted. "What do you think?"
Hinata closed her eyes. "I..." she started, hesitantly. "Father doesn't like Elder Hideyoshi-san very much. And he has been... different, ever since the Exam." she turned to Neji. "Ever since he spoke to you, Neji-san."
Neji was once again surprised by the turn the conversation took and by how much his cousin knew and noticed. Akimi-san was right: sight was a poor thing compared to insight.
"What did you talked about?" asked Naruto.
"Hiashi-sama told me the truth about my father's death, that he sacrificed himself to save his brother." Neji murmured, struggling to remain as stoic as usual. "Hiashi-sama... he apologised. He said he wished things would have gone differently."
"This means that Danzō made a big mistake when he alluded to the Hyūga Affair at the beginning of his talk with Hiashi-dono." Shino observed. "Hokage-sama will be able to obtain his support."
"Still the problem persists: few in the main house would support an actual change." Neji shook his head again. "Even if you two came up with a way to eliminate the Curse Seal, they would never allow it. The survival of the clan..."
Akimi raised one hand to stop him. "One: your seal cannot be removed without killing you. Two: I don't see why the protection of your kekkai genkai has to be linked with the possibility of one house controlling the other through torture. Three: are you still fate's slave or are you willing to fight for your own free future?"
Neji frowned. "But if you cannot take the Seal down, what can you do?"
Akimi smirked at him. "You really don't know a thing about Fūinjutsu, do you?"
"Take pity on the poor guy, 'mi-chan. Despite his words and attitude before our match, I considered ourselves even. That victory did get me a promotion."
"It wasn't the only factor, I wager. But fine." Akimi replied. "All right, Neji-san, I'll explain clearly. Your seal was given to you at birth, that caused your own chakra to merge with it, making it basically indelible. Your very chakra pathways grew and adopted around the Curse Seal, however whoever designed the array was very sloppy indeed."
"Your seal can be modified." Naruto interrupted her. "Short long story, if we design our own permanent seal to apply over yours, we could prevent the Main House from torturing you ever again. In technical terms, we call this overwriting."
"Is it really possible?" Neji whispered, in wonder.
"Possible? Sure." Akimi nodded with a gentle smile. "Easy? Not at all. The seal affects your eyes and your brain, one mistake could be fatal. Especially because overwriting requires the new seal to be more powerful than the other. Generally, this is achieved using more chakra."
"Is that a problem?" Neji asked. "Naruto-san has very big reserves."
Shino chuckled, making the two Hyūga gasp. "That's the underestimating of the century."
"As I mentioned before, the area the seals we are talking about effect is very delicate. A sheer amount of energy, uncontrolled and not stabilised would fry your brain." Akimi said. "It will take time. We need to be hundred per cent certain it will work."
Naruto nodded. "And we also need more data." he mused. "So if you really want to rebel, here it's your chance: let us examine your Curse Seal."
Neji froze on his tracks, years of bitterness and resentment rejoicing at the prospect as his pessimistic resignation struggled to comprehend what was happening. He almost expected his Seal to start burning up, as if the Main House could detect he was about to seriously defy them.
"You can do it, Neji." Hinata's gentle voice brought him back to reality.
And he smiled, once again sincerely. "When can we begin?"
Meanwhile in the Hokage's office,
Hiruzen felt he weight of his age on his shoulders, oppressing him. 'If only I were ten years younger..." he mused. Ever since the invasion he had not gotten more than a couple of hours of sleep. He feared exhaustion would cause him to make a mistake in the long political game that awaited. And even a small misstep could be fatal.
"You need to rest." Jiraiya sternly said behind him.
Under different circumstances, Hiruzen would have burst into laughter. Jiraiya was as goofy as he was a pervert and seeing him strict and concerned was very paradoxical. "I am not sure I have the time to." he sighed instead. "What Shibi-san reported is worrisome. And it's not like the situation wasn't dire even before we knew about brainwashing."
"It's bad, but it could also be good." Jiraiya shrugged. "Firstly, since we know about this we prepare and devise a countermeasure. Secondly, I hardly doubt that this brainwash thing can be done without leaving a trace. This is very good. How do you think the Daymō would feel about a Hokage that goes around influencing people like that? If he can break down the minds of jōnin imagine what he could do to civilians…"
"… including the Daymō and the Fire High Councillors as well." Hiruzen nodded. "Especially considering how strong willed our esteemed Daymō is to begin with."
Jiraiya chuckled. "Poor guy. With a wife like this, who could blame him?" he asked. "Back on track, sensei, we need to find proof. The soon the better, so I can present evidence to my contacts in Fire Capitol City."
"ANBU will take care of it, Kakashi must have briefed them by now. I trust Ibiki will go at the bottom of this. In fact, I know he will not rest until he does. It will be a matter of pride for him." Sarutobi smirked. "But I fear to learn how many operatives are truly loyal to me."
"Indeed." Jiraiya sighed. "You would be wise to send as many unreliable ANBU as possible on patrol, without arousing Danzō's suspicions, that is. The one thing we know for certain is that the old coot cares about Konoha's safety. His cronies won't jeopardise patrols and defensive measures, especially not after the invasion."
"Very true." Sarutobi inhaled on his pipe. "I am worried about Naruto-kun, Jiraiya. His anger was…"
"It was Kyūbi's influence." the Sannin said, narrowing his eyes.
"The fox's chakra magnifies his dark feelings to the point of insanity, but it cannot create something that is not there. Naruto was angry, bitter, resentful. We should not take for granted that he doesn't feel like that anymore. It could come back to bite out asses in the future."
"I'll make sure he faces his feelings, sensei, and I have no doubts that Akimi will watch him like a hawk." Jiraiya crossed his arms. "Moreover, I will make sure he can control his anger or at least suppress Kyūbi's influence. It will be my priority… I suspect he may want to scream at me some more, it will be good for him."
Hiruzen sighed, massaging him temples. "I fear that he doesn't trust me anymore, if he ever did. Not him, especially not Akimi. You have to make sure they trust you at least."
Jiraiya sighed. "What is really worrying you, sensei?"
"When we talked about Naruto's father…" Sarutobi started. "They gave up too quickly. My explanation helped, sure, but you know how they are with secrets when they concern them."
"Like a dog picking at a bone. Especially because Naruto is starved for information about his family." Jiraiya nodded. "I know you value your promise to Minato, but…"
Hiruzen looked sharply at him.
"The only promise I made is to ensure Naruto's safety, to train him and if possible to see him happy. He is my godson, sensei." Jiraiya looked pained. "I won't lie to him openly, not after what happened. If they figure something out and ask…"
"Of course, Jiraiya."
"And even if they don't ask," the Sannin continued, "after we return I may decide to talk with him, sensei. I hope nothing major happens but…"
"… it's unlikely."
"Danzō is relentless, Akatsuki in on the move and Orochimaru is still out there." Jiraiya shook his head. "Something is bound to go wrong. Naruto will be forced to grow up even more than he already has, at a quicker and unforgiving pace. So will Akimi and Shino, I reckon."
Hiruzen smiled sadly. "The important thing is that you make it out alive, at this point." he sighed. "And you wonder why I don't sleep."
Jiraiya snorted. "I am about to knock you out." he replied, nonchalantly. "So do yourself a favour and take a nap. I'll look over the information Shibi-san gave me and over the recon I did since yesterday and prepare some notes for you."
Hiruzen knew that Jiraiya hated paperwork and that spoke of his seriousness. So he shrugged and obeyed, even though he made his annoyance clear with a scowl. The relationship between him and Jiraiya had been strained for a long time, so he was very glad, in truth, to see proof of how much his student still cared. And deep down, he was aware that he had to thank Akimi and Naruto's influence on the Sannin for that.
'I hope for all our sakes Danzō will not hurt them, or we will have to deal with a berserker Sannin out for blood.' he mused. And he knew very well that Jiraiya would not fail. He was as strong as Orochimaru, if not more, and far more stubborn.
Back at the Katora Residence…
As Akimi and Naruto busied themselves with unravelling the mysteries of Neji's seal, Shino silently summoned a butterfly to sent word to his father.
"That was beautiful." Hinata commented, having observed him whispering softly to the fragile flying insect.
Shino hinted a smile, although the fact was well hidden by his high collar. "Thank you." he simply replied.
Hinata nodded in response.
"I am very grateful you chose to warn us. That required a big leap of faith. You never really met any of us."
Hinata blushed. "What N-Naruto-kun..." she stopped and bit her tongue. "...N-Naruto-san said to Neji during their match was... I k-knew he would help."
Shino didn't comment at first. "You are indeed very insightful, Hinata-hime."
The girl barely restrained a gasp.
"Still surprised? I think you need to be reminded of you are, that's why Akimi uses your title too." Shino said in usual blunt manner. "So just get used to it, hime."
Hinata was more surprised about how peculiar Shino's personality was. He was not your standard Aburame, that was for certain. But after spending just a meagre half an hour with Naruto and Akimi she felt like a different person and Shino had been their teammate for months. Team Seven was very united.
"I will." Hinata murmured.
Their attention shifted, as a blinding light erupted into the room.
"Damn it, sorry about that." Naruto exclaimed. "I overpowered my chakra viewing seal a little because I thought there was some protection in yours. I mean, it's like whoever did this didn't care about other people examining their work."
"Arrogance." Akimi replied, looking at the arrays Naruto had unravelled. She sat down crossed legged. "Sheer arrogance. There isn't any protection because they thought no one would ever try to disrupt their seal. There is no wonder you had such an insufferable attitude. Being around the Main House must be very trying on one's nerves."
"You have no idea." Neji muttered.
Hinata nodded vigorously. "Indeed."
"You speak almost as if that seal had its own personality, Akimi." Shino observed.
"You shouldn't have pointed out that." Naruto sighed as he took out a scroll and started to copy down the symbols of Neji's seal. "And then you complain about our obscure language." he mocked.
"Seals don't have personality, but they do reflect something of whoever designed them. The way certain symbols are chosen and arranged to achieve a certain result can say a lot about who made a seal It's the very same thing as everyone having a different way of talking, or fighting.." Akimi produced a scroll and a brush and begun stroking as well. "Chakra itself is different for everyone, and it's not only a matter of signature."
"I know! I've always noticed that, but..." Hinata exclaimed. "I mean, I..."
Akimi ceased to write for a second and looked at her. "You are going to become a fine sensor one day, Hinata-hime." she said. "Would you like a book about it?"
Naruto widened his eyes. Akimi didn't just go around offering books. He spared a glance at Hinata and she looked shocked as well. This was a peace offering, he realised, because there was no way Akimi didn't know Hinata would guess the significance of her statement. He had the feeling he had missed something about the two girls short relation. But what?
"I'd be honoured, Akimi-san." Hinata voiced eventually.
"Good." Akimi nodded, leaping on her feet. She gave her scroll to Naruto, taking his at the same time. The duo was costumed to check each other work. "I'll go grab it."
Naruto chuckled. "Well, we are done." he nodded to Neji. "It will be a while until we get some solid results, especially considering we have a lot of projects going on. You don't mind if Ero-sennin helps us? He is very experienced."
"Ero-sennin?" asked Neji, frowning.
Shino coughed, covering a snicker. He was going to enjoy the Hyūga's expression as he explained. "He means Jiraiya-sama."
"Nani?" Neji looked dumbfounded. "One of the Sannin lets you call him that...?"
"You cannot really stop Naruto-kun from calling people nicknames." Akimi returned in the room with an amused smirk. She produced a scroll. "Here, Hinata-hime."
"Thank you, Katora-san."
"So you are not opposed to Jiraiya-sensei helping us creating a counterseal for you, Neji-san?" Akimi asked.
The other boy nodded.
"Very well. I believed you mentioned you had a short time on your hand. I do hope next time you'll be our guests we shan't have to hurry in such a way."
"So do we." Neji said, bowing. "You too seem to be quite busy."
"We have just been promoted." Akimi blankly replied. "And the invasion changed things. Otherwise, we would not have been talking in such a way."
"Yes, indeed." Neji knew there was more about the strange behaviour of Team Seven. The three rookie chūnin were on edge, but even though he probably wasn't as insightful as his cousin, he knew when to stop pressing for answers he would not get. Thus, with a last nod, he left.
Hinata bowed as well. "Thank you for your help." she said, with a kind smile.
"No need." Naruto smiled back. "Just try not to become as stuck-up as your family is, will ya?"
Hinata blushed. "A-all right."
"Don't let them sway you, Hinata-hime." Akimi said instead. "And enjoy your reading."
The young Hyūga heiress left as well. Shino tilted his head. "You didn't simply gave her a book on being a sensor, did you?"
Akimi shrugged. "I had a couple of interesting scrolls laying around and... well, we won't be here to use them, now, will we?" she smirked. "Now, Shino, I think it's about time we head to the vault. You have to tell us why on earth you are so upset."
"I will." Shino quietly replied. "But I expect the same from you."
Aburame Shibi was quite baffled to see a messenger butterfly arriving so soon after his son left, especially considering that he doubted that Team Seven and Jiraiya-sama had even left Konoha. His surprise faded quickly though, as he became quickly intrigued by the possibilities.
The kids didn't disappoint.
Aburame Shibi smirked widely as the tiny insect whispered into his ear. It seemed that, without really trying, the three young chūnin had acquired a great advantage in the political struggle to come. Now it was up to him and Hokage-sama to exploit that information. Shibi closed his eyes and sighed, weighting out what options he had. It was paramount that Danzō didn't discover that they knew about his schemes regarding the Hyūga. They needed to distract him, the sooner the better.
With that in mind, Shibi hurriedly made his way outside and towards the Hokage Tower, hoping he would be still able to catch Jiraiya-sama before he left for the training trip. Of course, he still took care of using every trick in his pocket to be as covert and unnoticed as possible, which made the trip longer than he would have liked.
Jiraiya was the one who greeted him at the door, quite surprisingly, after he asked ANBU to announce his presence.
"I thought we agreed you would visit Sarutobi-sensei in the next few days, after our departure." Jiraiya said. "The old man is resting." he added, with a tone that eloquently forbade any comment.
Shibi didn't even flinch. "I took care of remaining undetected and even if I were unsuccessful it would not be so strange for me to visit Hokage-sama, especially since my son is about to leave with you."
'He is up to something.' the Sannin narrowed his eyes, but and activated the privacy seals around the office. "Fair enough, but you would not waste time and effort to come here without reason. We spoke few hours ago. What's new, Shibi-san?"
Shibi smirked. "I received a message from my son. He and his teammates have had the most interesting conversation with Hinata Hyūga."
Jiraiya raised an eyebrow. "Those kids…" he muttered, chuckling a little. "Let me wake sensei up, then you can tell us what they found out."
Fortunately, Sarutobi had been able to rest for a while: he was quite worried about the old man. There were too many burdens laying on his shoulders. He hoped Shibi didn't have bad news.
"Interesting." Hiruzen commented, when the Aburame clan leader finished his tale. You could see the gears moving inside the man's head. "Very interesting."
"Naruto and Akimi want to overwrite the Hyūga's Curse Seal." Jiraiya murmured instead, massaging his chin. "They really don't seem to let anything stop them. Nobody else has ever tried or thought about doing something like that… but perhaps that is the reason everyone thinks it's not possible."
"Indeed." Hiruzen chuckled, taking in a deep intake of smoke. "It is not something we should mention to Hiashi Hyūga until we are certain he wouldn't be opposed to such a change. Nevertheless, it seems I need to speak with him, the sooner the better."
"We can't let Danzō know that we know how his attempt went." Shibi said. "You need to give him something else to think about."
Jiraiya raised an eyebrow.
"Don't do anything stupid, Jiraiya." Hiruzen exclaimed. "I know that look."
"Don't worry too much about it, sensei." the Sannin replied, smirking. "The thing is, you have already agreed to step down but to wait until announcing the decision. In any case, it would be only logical for you to speak and seek the approval of the clans. Of all clans."
Shibi nodded. "You could summon each clan head in a personal and official meeting."
"It certainly makes sense." Sarutobi agreed, frowning deeply. "What really worries me is that Danzō may easily guess we know about the brainwashing… as soon as Shino leaves in fact, it will be proof we have talked and exchanged information, Shibi-san."
"Are you going to tell the other clan heads about Akatsuki?" the Aburame asked then.
Hiruzen sighed. "I am pretty certain they will come to Konoha searching for Naruto, despite any precaution we take. I want my jōnin alert… and perhaps even the clans, yes."
Shibi nodded. "Then this may work: let's suppose you came to ask me if you could take Shino out for a special training trip, Jiraiya-sama. It is an incredible honour and so I accepted. Your main goal was to ensure my unwavering support, which was already almost granted anyway. You know I don't like Root."
"What are you getting at?" the Sannin replied, intrigued.
"There is more of course. I could be suspecting that Danzō is on the move, fearing my son is in danger. Therefore, one could think my biggest concern and reason for accepting your offer is in fact to ensure my son's safety… and my legacy with him." Shibi continued. "And what happens when I suddenly find out that the training trip is just an excuse to protect your other apprentice Naruto? That you might have put my son in more danger than he would be in Konoha?"
"You would be angry." Hiruzen's eyes widened. "Angry enough to make a deal with Danzō."
"If that were to happen, Danzō would not be foolish enough to think I suddenly like him or blindly support him, but he would be pleased that you don't have a strong ally in me anymore. He would still be suspicious of me, as I would be of him."
"But he would be quite busy keeping you from helping me." the Sandaime smirked. "It could work."
"It is extremely risky." Jiraiya shook his head. "That old croon is not easily fooled. Would he really believe you are willing to work with him?"
Shibi shrugged. "My clan is renowned to be more practical than sentimental. I am not happy about how our secret abilities have been exploited by Root, but I could explain to Danzō how I don't like my son being so close to Kyūbi either." he said. "I don't really think that, but Danzō can't know for certain, especially because he thinks this is one of his best assets. He is going to exploit the fact that most shinobi and civilians hate Uzumaki Naruto and the fox against you, Hokage-sama, because you clearly favour him instead."
"It's ridiculous." Jiraiya growled.
"It is true." Hiruzen dismissively replied. "But it is quite known your son is close to his teammates. Moreover Naruto and Akimi have been your guests several times and Shino is more often than not training over at the Katora compound."
"My anger would be born out of the fact you didn't tell me about Akatsuki, before that I didn't think Naruto could be a danger for my son."
"And Danzō knows you are protective of Shino, given your past dealings." Jiraiya continued. "It could work… but as I said, it's extremely risky. Are you willing to take such a leap, Shibi-san?"
"Yes." the Aburame curtly answered. "Even if it doesn't work, Danzō will still waste energy and resources trying to figure out if my offer is valid or not. Besides, convincing him I am cross with you, Sarutobi-sama, may be sufficient to make him believe I did not share my knowledge of his brainwashing with you."
"It's a gamble." Hiruzen concluded. "But one we should dare to take. Danzō's strong suit will be is sway on the jōnin's votes, but still he needs support on the Great Council."
"Very well." Jiraiya conceded. "I hope you will be able to keep it up."
Shibi bowed. "I have confidence in our skills." he replied. "This said, I must take my leave. I intend to brief my most loyal kinsmen and try to find out who Danzō's minions are. That shall give me good leverage when I deal with him."
Jiraiya deactivated the privacy seals and watched him go. As usual, the Aburame didn't waste time in idle chitchat. "That is not someone I would want as an enemy." he observed then. "He may just pull this thing off."
Sarutobi gestured him to re-activate the seals, then once they had privacy once again he spoke: "We must sprang our trap on Danzō as well. I would like you to be there for a last chat with him."
"While I would really like to purposely annoy Danzō once more, it is late already. The sooner we leave, the better."
Hiruzen chuckled. "It looks like you need to be in two places at once. Any ideas?"
"I knew something was up." Shino gravely said, his fist clenched. The whole truth about the already dreadful night Kyūbi had attacked Konoha shocked him to the core. He could not imagine how Naruto was feeling. "I had no idea it would be so appalling, though. That man shall meet his reckoning, Naruto. I have no doubts you can do it."
The blonde looked proved – telling that particular story was still quite difficult for him, even though Akimi had done most of the talking. The girl had taken care to keep touching him all the time, so to avoid any unwanted interruption from Kyūbi.
"Thanks, Shino." he murmured, moved by the confidence the other boy showed in him. Akimi squeezed his hand tighter. Naruto frowned. "What do you mean you noticed?"
Akimi giggled. "It looks like you aren't as stealthy as you thought, 'to-kun."
"I know you two very well." Shino shrugged. "While the invasion has had quite the impact, you were way too hyperactive. I was certain your happiness was mostly forced… especially with the way you kept saying dattebayo. You haven't done that since the Academy and now I am well aware that you were acting all the time, pretending to be the dobe."
Naruto shrugged. "I myself didn't realise how forced it was until I exploded in jiji's office."
Shino adjusted his sunglasses. "I can't help but agree that talking with Kyūbi was reckless, but I understand while you did it." he said. He also thought that Akimi wouldn't have conceded to that request so quickly and easily if she hadn't been so stressed about the Kuroken fellow. "You needed to do something. You hate being helpless. Who doesn't?"
"You aren't being yourself either." Akimi observed. "I failed to notice it yesterday because I was too caught up in what was happening. You have been tense ever since we mentioned Danzō, despite your enthusiasm at the prospective of learning nature transformation."
"It's true." Shino confirmed.
"What's up with you and the old teme, then?" Naruto asked.
Shino looked away from then, his shoulders tensing. "Yesterday was not the first time I heard of Danzō. In fact, I have met him face to face… once upon a time."
Naruto gasped. "What?"
Akimi's eyes narrowed instead. "What did he do?"
Shino had expected such a reaction from her and spoke his next words very carefully. "Back when Root was still operative, he attempted to recruit me. He was well within his power and my father… my father could not protest. I could see he was angry and worried, but in truth I did not understand how dangerous the situation had been until much later."
"He tried to…" Naruto looked angry as well now. "…when?"
"Just after I started the Academy." Shino answered, sombrely. "I believe that was the last straw for my father, so he started to keep his eyes open and gather info on Danzō and Root."
Akimi frowned. "Something else happened, something that made you angry."
"Yes." Shino averted his eyes from his teammates, struggling to keep his voice even. "When I was very young, my father took in the son of a close friend of his. We grew up as brothers."
His teammates saw through his stoic mask immediately.
"Danzō took him instead." Naruto murmured, darkly. "I am sorry, Shino."
"He offered himself up." Shino continued, lost in his memories. "I guess he felt he would never fit in the village anyway. Torune's insects are different. Why do you ask? They are poisonous, deadly in fact and he can't touch anyone without…"
"… killing them." Akimi concluded for him. "You miss him."
"Knowing for certain than Danzō is back, that Root is still operative… it makes me wonder." Shino shrugged. "I don't even know if he is still alive."
The other two nodded gravely.
"We can fight back this time." Naruto spoke with confidence. "Or at the very least help Ero-sennin and jiji to fight back."
Shino nodded. "I know." he said. "Thank you for making sure I could come with you for this training trip, by the way."
"You do realise I have S-rank nunkenin after me, do you?" Naruto looked down. "It could be very dangerous."
"I am aware. I assure you it was an easy concept to grasp." Shino fixed his collar to cover up even more of his face. "It is worth the risk, I assure you. And not only because I will be learning from a Sannin... even though I must say I am not sure I want to become a spy master."
Naruto smiled widely at the resolute support his teammate shown.
Akimi tilted her head instead, pensively. "I should have guessed you wouldn't like the idea of interacting with so many people." she said. "It's worth giving it shot, though, even if I am not sure I would want to become a spy mistress either."
Naruto and Shino turned to her with a sceptical eyebrow.
"Well, not because I wouldn't enjoy it, but because I would have to stay out of Konoha for extended periods of time. I guess we should wait and see how Jiraiya-sensei interacts with his contacts."
"You should also consider that Jiraiya-sama wanted to be out of the village after the Yondaime died, or so my father says." Shino pointed out then. "There is a number of techniques that can be used to keep contact with people all over the world."
"I agree." Naruto nodded. "It's not like either of you has to take up that mantle tomorrow, we have time."
"Speaking of, we should continue brainstorming about diversion techniques." Akimi said. "I am sure Jiraiya-sensei will come soon."
"What have you gotten so far?" Shino asked, his glasses shining.
"We have made this," Akimi produced a sealing tag, "it's a genjutsu seal that basically reproduces Henge in such a way that chakra leakage is minimal. You can use it to look less conspicuous in civilian areas. And if we combine this with Kage Bunshin…"
"We can send out a number of diversion teams made up with my clones." Naruto concluded. "But we should also deploy teams made up with true clones from each of you."
"Tou-san mentioned he was all right with me learning Kage Bunshin. I thought it would be for the trip itself, but this sounds very intriguing as well."
"I know!" Naruto pumped a fist in the air, very eager to talk about the awesomeness of Kage Bunshin as always. "I think you'll have quite an easy time learning, since you already know how to clone your insects. So first thing off, you need to…"
"Wait." Akimi stopped him with a small hand wave. "Kakashi-sensei is coming. Must be here to say goodbye."
Naruto smiled. "Then I guess he should be here to assist with the training, it may also be best since it's technically a kinjutsu and all."
A couple of minutes later the silver haired jōnin entered the room while Akimi held the door open. He squared his students up and down. "Are you all right, kids?"
"All considered… yes." Naruto answered truthfully. "It's not peachy, but it could be worse."
Kakashi sighed. "You are still angry, aren't you?"
"Yes." Naruto looked away, his shoulders tense.
"Sarutobi-sama told you about our… err, heated discussion then?" Akimi asked.
"Among other things." Kakashi confirmed, sitting down. "Naruto, you can't let this rage you feel overwhelm you. Don't ignore it either, or it will crush you. I know it's easier to feel anger rather than guilt or sadness, but it's not the right answer. Trust me."
The three kids had a feeling he was speaking from experience – especially considering how Kakashi was so often busy contemplating the memorial stone.
"And you have nothing to be guilty about, Naruto." Kakashi continued. "I know Kushina would not want you to think like this. She would quite literally knock some sense into you if she were here."
"You knew her." Naruto exhaled. "But… how?"
The jōnin rubbed his jaw. "I guarded her during her pregnancy, in secret. Both the Sandaime and the Yondaime were quite worried about her, but Kushina was stubborn – you take after her, you know – and didn't want to be treated as a prisoner or an invalid." He eye-smiled. "So I was to shadow her from a distance, looking after her. Of course, she wasn't easily fooled. I never told anyone this, but she definitely knew I was following her. It was during that time I started to spend time at the memorial stone and once I got so lost in my thoughts I didn't realise it was already the time Kushina went to the market. So she came to get me, said she didn't want me to get in trouble or feel guilty I had shirked from my duty."
Naruto had never looked with such captured attention to his sensei, not even when he was learning high level ninjutsu like the Suiryūdan no Jutsu [Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique].
"This is why I know that nothing made her more happy than knowing she was going to have a son, Naruto. She always said that love was the only way to tame Kyūbi's hatred and that she never felt as much love as she did when she became pregnant. Do you understand?"
Naruto nodded, quite speechless. His eyes were lucid.
"Good, good." Kakashi's voce lost his serious and solemn edge to return to his usual eerie and laidback quality. "Now, tell me what you are up to."
"We were about to teach Shino how to make a Shadow Clone." Akimi answered, given that Naruto was still dazzled. "Shall we spare any possible reprimands and let you do the honours?"
Kakashi snorted. "With pleasure." he replied. "Now, Shino, this technique is as easy as it is tricky. The basic concept is quite similar to a normal Bunshin, you want use your chakra to create something different and detached from yourself. Of course, you require much more power and focus to create a shadow clone. First, memorize the handseals. They are…"
21st March, early morning – Konoha's gates
"You three be careful." Kakashi softly commanded at the three freshly promoted chūnin in front of him. "I want you back in one piece."
"Don't worry, sensei, we wouldn't want to miss a chance to have a battle royal with you… one when we actually have a winning shot against you." Akimi smirked. "We'll train hard."
Shino and Naruto nodded beside her.
"Good. And I trust you two will keep this hothead reined in." Kakashi ruffled Naruto's hair. "Be yourself, Naruto, don't let others sway you."
"Bank on it, dattebayo." the blonde gave a thumb up. "Now, where the hell is Ero-sennin?"
"Stop calling me that in public. Damn gaki!" The tall and imposing ninja appeared with a blur of speed. "You three are all set? You have quite a number of storage scrolls on you… ready for everything, eh?"
Akimi scoffed. "Perhaps I wouldn't have gone overboard if you told us how long we would be travelling."
"I am not sure myself. You know the life on the road is unpredictable, Akimi-chan." Jiraiya shrugged. "But I assure you, we shall be travelling through civilization. Plenty of chances to replenish our supplies."
Akimi looked unbothered. "Better be safe…"
"Very well. We are ready to depart. Kakashi-kun, you look after the old man, all right?" Jiraiya crossed his arms. "And before we leave… gaki, why don't you leave a parting gift here? We all be relieved knowing the rebuilding effort is being busted by your clones."
Kakashi frowned. "Are you sure that is a good idea, Jiraiya-sama?" he enquired. "You may need your chakra on the road, to train and well…"
"Today I just want to cover as much distance as we can." the Sannin replied. "And our main goal in any case is to avoid detection and subsequent confrontations. Besides I don't think Naruto has any stamina problem, don't you, gaki?"
"It's going to be all right. I'll restrain myself." Naruto smiled, crossing his fingers. "Tajū Kage Bunshin no Jutsu."
"Oh, good kami." Kakashi exclaimed, looking at the swarm of blonde clones appearing around them. "This is restraining? How many can you exactly do?"
"We lost count a long time ago." Akimi observed. "Especially because the number seems to be constantly raising."
Jiraiya looked delighted. "Good job! Now send them to the wall… and I want them to be as noisy as possible. Be sure to be noticed. Draw attention to yourself."
Naruto snorted. "Do you want them to use Henge so their suit is completely orange like old times?"
"You once wore a completely orange suit? Really?" the Sannin was quite disbelieving.
"You have no idea…" Akimi giggled. "But it did make wonders for his stealth training. What's your purpose anyway? I mean, it would be quite obvious the real Naruto is out of the village in any case."
"Truthfully, it's just a chance to annoy certain individuals." Jiraiya giggled as well.
"Oh." Naruto smirked widely. "Should I send a couple of them to prank people?"
Jiraiya's face lit up as if he were a kid in a candy store. Akimi smirked as well, leaning to whisper something into a clone's ear. Said clone looked simply elated, beaconing some of his comrades and disappearing with a blur of speed. The true Naruto looked questioningly to Akimi and she simply shrugged, mouthing: 'Later'.
Kakashi face palmed himself. 'I am glad Shino is going along to be the voice of reason, those three together like spreading mischief a little too much.'
Jiraiya smiled goofily. "I just needed to ask, didn't I? Wish I could see what you two cocooned." he rubbed his hands together. "This reminds me, Kakashi, you have to report back to Sarutobi-sensei."
The silver haired jōnin nodded. "Then I'll head there at once. You two behave." He looked pointedly at Naruto and Akimi. They simply smiled way too innocently. "Very well. Goodbye."
"And we are set to go." Jiraiya boomed, preparing to jump. "Top speed, kids, and follow me."
Meanwhile, Shimura's residence
Danzō sat crossed legged, meditating in the quiet of his home. His breaths were deep and even, his body as still as his mind was active. He didn't regret making his move in the light of the invasion and Hiruzen's blatant failures, but he was aware than it would take effort and patience to be successful. He had to do it, for the good of Konoha.
"Danzō-sama." His contemplations were interrupted by one of his masked soldiers. "I apologise for bothering you. The Honourable Elders are here to see you."
Danzō nodded. "Let them in." He hastily moved to sit on the couch, he was supposedly crippled after all. He used the next few seconds to collect himself. The other two Elders were powerful allies to have, no doubt, but they were starting to annoy him. He considered for a short, gratifying moment to use his Sharingan and brainwash them so he wouldn't need to deal with them. He discarded the idea immediately, of course, he needed them to be their savvy political selves to sway the jōnin his way. But it was nice to know that he had a failsafe if things turned to the worse.
"Good morning." he politely greeted as his guests entered the room. "Something seems to be bothering you."
Homura sighed deeply, while Koharu scoffed loudly, her annoyance more than clear.
"It's ridiculous, as if we have time to play around!" the old woman seethed. "Hiruzen has clearly lost control of his apprentice and of the Kyūbi kid!"
Danzō raised an eyebrow. This sudden visit was about the Uzumaki brat? He had other things to think about, like deciding which clan head to approach to secure enough support in the Great Council. "Jiraiya and his apprentices have left the village if I am not mistaken, what could they have possibly done?"
Koharu looked ready to start a very tedious tirade, but Homura stopped her with a stern but gentle grip on her elbow. He eyed the bandaged elder with clear cautious, as if knowing it was best not to try his patience too much. Danzō immediately realised he would need to tread carefully in this regard, for the old man was not manipulated as easily as his teammate.
"Just before they left the village, Jiraiya ordered the young Uzumaki to create several Shadow Clones. They are… working on the wall right now." Homura explained. "They aren't exactly behaving as a respectable chūnin should be."
Danzō frowned. According to his operatives, Jiraiya had left Konoha soon after dawn. He and his students had clearly group of clones, heading in two different directions. He had deployed one nin to follow each party, knowing it wouldn't take more than a day to discover which one was the real group. He had expected the Sannin had more tricks on his sleeves and left a couple of sentinels on each gates. It was surprising the other two Elders had brought the news before one of his men could report this.
"That is quite the understatement, Homura!" Koharu shirked, her cheeks reddening quite disturbingly. "They are shouting and jumping around… They painted my house pink. Shocking pink! And wrote Baa-chan, you should chill on my walls!"
Danzō mentally scoffed. Such an immature and childish behaviour… yet it hit right in the bull's-eye. Koharu was easily incensed and valued propriety over most things. Jiraiya – quite possibly with Hiruzen's blessings – was playing with them: being annoying to be distracting.
"We already agreed that steps need to be taken to rein the Kyūbi's Jinchūriki in." Danzō calmly explained. "It shall be done as soon as the situation is stabilised. For now, it's best to let Jiraiya protect him. Akatsuki is a serious threat."
"One you already knew about." Homura pointed out.
Brainwashing was seeming like a better and better option. Danzō clenched his fist over his staff, standing up. "I deal with shadows, old friend. Of course I knew. The threat was almost non-existent up until a month ago. By then, Jiraiya came back to deal with the matter. There was no need to mention it."
Homura nodded in acceptance. The other man was clearly not used in sharing. "There are more than two hundred clones in the village, not only behaving badly, but also showing off. A couple used very powerful techniques before dispelling, the village is just wakening but everyone is talking about it. If someone were to arrive from outside, they would immediately know about it. I don't see what Jiraiya is trying to achieve."
Probably that he was not that worried about Akatsuki, the Sannin would be able to fend off their attempts with ease. He knew protecting his precious godchild wasn't the only reason he left the village.
":.. moreover, Shino Aburame left with them. It worries me, because it's yet another proof of how Shibi Aburame is going to oppose us at every turn."
Danzō struggled not to show his annoyance: those who left that morning had been decoys then. Had the true ones left publicly from the main gates then? Or did they elude his scrutiny? It didn't really matter after all, he had a pretty good idea where Jiraiya was going after all.
"That is hardly surprising." Danzō shrugged. "Hiruzen will play on the skill Team Hatake has shown during the invasion and what better way than giving them special training."
"Their performance was quite impressive." Homura conceded.
Danzō glared covertly at him, while Koharu started muttering that good skill is not an excuse to misbehave. They were interrupted in that moment, his masked bodyguard appearing on the doorway.
"ANBU is at the door, Danzō-sama. I made sure they could not see me."
The bandaged man started walking towards the entrance. "Follow me. I believe we are being summoned." As soon as his face was covered he scowled deeply: Hiruzen was clearly playing with him.
Meanwhile, Woods South-West of Konoha
Naruto suddenly snickered and his hilarity almost caused him to misstep on a tree branch.
Akimi glanced at him. "What's up?"
"You are devious one, 'mi-chan. Apparently our main decoys at the gate decided to pull a prank."
"Oh, dear kami." Shino muttered behind them. "Seriously?"
"Very good. Our idea was to fish the Elders out by annoying them, I can't actually wait to hear my clone feedback." Jiraiya spoke up from the front of the formation, slowing down so he was running side by side with them instead than on the front. "What did you do?"
Akimi shrugged. "Let's just say that if someone liked very much etiquette and propriety and someone especially loved how perfectly kept their house is…"
"… someone would be very annoyed if woken up by sudden and loud noise, to find out their house is now shocking pink and their garden a little littered." Naruto laughed. "Kami, that woman can scream, she is worse than Sakura. She actually had ANBU chase after me!"
Jiraiya giggled. "Ah, good job. Koharu is definitely the most annoying Elder, not nearly as dangerous as Danzō, but she can be so…"
Naruto nodded vigorously. "I know."
"Do you think our plan worked?" Akimi asked. "Have we eluded Root detection?"
Their strategy wasn't overly complicated, based basically on a lot of Kage Bunshin and Henge. Given that Naruto was a small powerhouse, he had created several decoy clones. First, two groups departed as Naruto, Jiraiya and Akimi, since Danzō wasn't supposed to know about Shino anyway. They were to duplicate once again after covering a fair amount of distance from Konoha. Shino had easily learned how to do Shadow Clones as well, but he didn't dare to duplicate too many times. They sent a complete set of clones to the main gates, together with Kakashi-sensei, for an official departure. The real Team 7 and the real Jiraiya had exited Konoha covertly, using – for Shino's dismay – the entire prowess of diving toads. They were set to send out yet another decoy group as soon as Shino recovered enough chakra.
Jiraiya picked up the pace before answering Akimi's inquiry. "Hard to say. We certainly may have swayed him in Konoha, but I am sure he has agents roaming the outskirts of the village as back up. He probably guessed we are headed towards Fire Capitol City as well, although he can't say which route we are taking."
"And which route are we taking?" Akimi frowned. "We aren't going in the direction of Capitol City."
"I have no precise route set at all. I need to get in touch with my contact in the Twelve Towns, then we shall head to the Capitol. We'll take decide the best path time to time, in order to avoid detection and train. Once we arrive in the city we won't be able to practice ninjutsu properly, you know."
Akimi nodded. The Twelve Towns were a scattered groups of settlements that on a map formed a sort of crown around the Capitol. A couple of them were quite fire from the main city actually, but visiting them would probably allow Jiraiya to get word or receive fresh intel from the whole Land of Fire. "Is this about the secret, super-important A rank mission you won't tell us about?"
Jiraiya snickered. "Quite possible. Let's just say I need reconnaissance for that mission and until I have it, I don't really see the point in telling you." he replied. "In any case our first mission, broadly speaking, is making sure Danzō's doesn't sway every influential figure in Capitol City."
"You mean it's inevitable some will side with him?" Naruto frowned.
"Totally. Thinking otherwise would be naïve and make us waste time." Jiraiya firmly stated. "Some of the feudal lords share basically Danzō's whole philosophy."
"But if we take so long getting to the capitol won't we be disadvantaged?" Shino pointed out. "Danzō will have time to plot and turn things his way."
Jiraiya shrugged. "And on the other hand we will have the chance to dismantle some of the work he has done… that will also have the benefit of annoying him. Besides, my own people is going to try and find out what he is up to."
"I see." the Aburame fixed his sunglasses. "So where are we going now?"
"We are almost there." Jiraiya smirked. "Otouku City."
Back in Konoha, Hokage's office
"Thank you for coming." the Sandaime greeted his guests with a tight smile, after activating th privacy seals. He hoped they did not implode on themselves due to overuse. "I know it's early, but these are pressing times. I hope I haven't disrupted any of your plans."
As Hiruzen and Jiraiya surmised, Homura and Koharu had run to Danzō to complain about Naruto's behaviour. A simple, quite immature but very effective strategy. He was delighted in being able to irk them. The Elders were obliged to answer the Hokage's summons during a time of duress, such as the aftermath of an invasion.
"You haven't, Sarutobi." Danzō replied, evenly. "We were just having breakfast, so your summon was conveniently delivered to all of us at the same time. We do have some questions for you as well."
Hiruzen let out a small pull of smoke. Of course Danzō had seen through their plan, he was too smart to be fooled. He was better at controlling his emotions than the other two, but still annoyed he bet. "I see." he said. "Perhaps it's about the same matter that prompted me to call you here."
Danzō was standing in front of the Third's desk, Koharu and Homura a step behind him, showing an united front. Sarutobi himself was flanked by a bored looking Jiraiya and an alert Kakashi, who for a change was not reading his book. In terms of raw power, Hiruzen's side was definitely winning, especially because the Sannin was subtly flaring his chakra up at random moments.
"We have executed our plan to protect Naruto-kun from Akatsuki." Hiruzen announced jovially. "But we also thought that wasting the manpower his clone can provide to the rebuilding effort was pointless."
Homura frowned. "Yet you are here, Jiraiya."
"My apprentice isn't the only one who can use Kage Bunshin, old geezer." Jiraiya whistled, his chakra spiking up even more than before.
Danzō mentally seethed. 'He has duplicated several times, yet he has more raw power than me anyway. Damn it.' "And having your apprentice use Tajū Kage Bunshin no jutsu while he is being chased by powerful foes doesn't seem wise. Especially considering his supposed protector has split his chakra as well."
Jiraiya chuckled merrily. "Oh, I am pretty sure it will be all right. Take this clone of mine: I am just here to talk, then I will dispel and my whole chakra pool shall go back to the original. Unless…" he stopped. "… are you suggesting I need to fight right now?"
Hiruzen glared at his student, but secretly enjoyed how riled up Danzō seemed. Jiraiya had always annoyed his old friend to the point of irrationality.
"It's actually very good you are still here, Jiraiya." Koharu exclaimed, her voice extremely shrill. "Do you have any idea of what your immature brat of an apprentice has done?"
Jiraiya turned to her, his features hardening quite visibly. "Enlighten me."
"He destroyed my property! He is a chūnin of Konohakagure, he should behave sensibly. This clearly shows he has no respect of the chain of command! He should be demoted at once, or at the very least severely punished!"
"Chain of command?" Jiraiya snorted, leaning against the wall. "Funny you should say that, considering you are clearly plotting against your Hokage, no matter how covert you fancy yourself to be. I assure you Naruto would never disobey a direct order regarding a mission from one of his commanding officers. That is, one of us. Not any of you." He pointed at him, Hiruzen and Kakashi.
Koharu's face this time became a very disturbing shade of purple.
"Contain yourself, Jiraiya." Sarutobi calmly stated. "Understand this, Koharu: Naruto is now under a lot of pressure. Not only he has suddenly dealt with the reality of war, but also with the knowledge S-rank nunkenin are after him and Kyūbi. We thought it would be prudent to let him blow off some steam, without risking detection. We all know Akatsuki is going to start its pursuit from here. This way, he also helps in the rebuilding effort. If he indulges himself in a couple of harmless prank while he does that, so be it. You will not waste ANBU strength on such trivial matters anymore, is that understood?"
Koharu took a step back.
"If you do that again, I will remove you from the chain of command of ANBU all together." Hiruzen continued, taking a deep intake of smoke in. "We all agree that ensuring the protection of the village is our first priority right now."
The woman actually looked ashamed for a moment, but then stood with her head straight, a scowl painted on her face. But the Hokage turned his attention to Danzō. "Was there something else?"
"I understand that Aburame Shino has joined Jiraiya and his apprentice on their training trip."
"Yes." Hiruzen smiled. "There is no doubt that Team 7 has been one of the most successful cells we have created in the last few years, with a teamwork to rival the levels of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio. Training intensively together will allow them to take on more difficult missions once they are back. They are chūnin now, after all. And it's a promotion that is not going to disappear: we did show the strength of our youngest during the Chūnin Exam. We would not want to lose that edge with the Elemental Nations."
Koharu seethed silently, because she could not argue with that point. Danzō mentally shook his head: Hiruzen still knew how to play the game.
"I wonder though," Homura spoke up, "wasn't Aburame-dono worried something would happen to his only heir? You do have S-rank on your trail, Jiraiya. Protecting three children is harder than protecting two."
"Shibi-san was honoured by my offer. His son's skills are impressive, that is why I chose to take me along. It was not an act of goodwill for the benefit of my other apprentices." Jiraiya explained. "I made that clear. And I also understand that those three together can easily destabilize an enemy stronger than them. Has that not happened already with Momochi Zabuza, Kakashi?"
The silver haired jōnin smirked. "Indeed. They used the cover of his mist on their favour, turning the technique against him."
"And Orochimaru, too." Jiraiya continued. "Trust me, they can keep up just long enough for me to deal with those annoying clouded bastards."
'Fascinating.' Danzō thought. They hadn't told Shibi the truth then. That could be exploited. "So who exactly is informed about Akatsuki?" he asked.
"Us." Hiruzen gestured around the room. "The ANBU commander too. Kakashi is going to brief the jōnin we are being target by a nunkenin association with red clouds as an uniform, without divulging the details about Kyūbi. ANBU shall be informed likewise. I don't want too much attention on Naruto."
Danzō nodded. "It seems wise. It's good to see we can still work together for the good of Konoha."
"As long as we agree on some points, yes."
Both parties knew that polite façade was going to crumble as soon as it was convenient. The joys of politics.
"I'd say we are finished here." Danzō said, restraining a snort. "I am sure you have a busy day ahead, especially now that your apprentice isn't really here to help you."
"Don't make the mistake to think I won't be helping just because I am not here." Jiraiya suddenly stood up straight. "There are few things I wouldn't do to protect the Konoha I love, the one Minato died for. There is nothing I wouldn't do to protect his only living legacy. Take care to remind that, old geezer."
Danzō was about to reply, but Jiraiya just looked at Sarutobi, who nodded. The Sannin promptly disappeared with a puff of smoke.
"Well, aside from that, you are right. I do have many things to take care of." Hiruzen deactivated the privacy seals around them. "Until next time, old friends."
Hiruzen laid back on his chair, watching them leave. He was pretty sure they would cross Chōza Akimichi on their way out: he was the first of the clan heads he would meet to set the stage of the political game to come.
"That went well." the Hokage sighed. "Go, Kakashi. It won't be long before Akatsuki arrives. I want us to be ready."
The silver haired jōnin nodded. "Hai, sir."
Meanwhile, Konoha's Walls
"Even though it hasn't been destroyed, Konoha has taken a great blow." Kisame commented. "The damage looks consistent."
"This was once the most powerful village in the Elemental Countries, now look at it." Itachi replied, stoically. "Pitiful."
"It's almost as if you were saddened to see your old village so broken." Kisame chucked. "It's out of character."
"I don't have any feeling whatsoever towards this place." Itachi's voice took on a warning note. "Look there. They have already started rebuilding."
"Quite the number of workers they have put together."
"That's our target." Itachi commented. "Our intel said he was proficient with Kage Bunshin, it's quite impressive… the Nine Tails must give him great stamina."
"Is it?" Kisame smirked, making his shark-like teeth shine. "Are we in time then?"
"I doubt it, but it would remiss not to check." Itachi fixed his hat, revealing that his eyes were blazing with the full might of the Sharingan. "We must be careful. The Third may be old, but he is not to be underestimated."
Kisame snorted. "Let him come. Samehada is hungry."
Konoha's day had just become quite cloudy.
REVIEW ANSWERS
Train Heartnett: thank you for reviewing!
KakeruPB: thank you so much for reviewing! I am thinking over the nickname issue and I may make a poll so you guy can help me decide, either way it's not a problem for me! And thank you very much for reminding me of those kenjutsu scrolls. I did kind of forget! May come in handy during the training trip! Hope you liked the chapter.
Goofy Smart and Blonde: thank you for reviewing!
Heftig Einzelganger: thank you so much for reviewing! Sorry I couldn't manage sooner!
DannyPhantom619: thank you so much for reviewing. Having Naruto learning Hiraishin is my plan to say the truth, but probably not before halfway through Shippūden.
sobreyra274: thank you so much for reviewing! I am glad you like Naruto and Akimi's relationship. Sorry for the late update. Hope you like the chapter.
xsanoxx: thank you so much for reviewing! I know what you mean, I did imagine something like that… is the reason the title of the story is destructive duo! (The Akimi, Naruto, Gamabunta combo did get close to that though!)
bigfan22: thank you so much for the nice review, I am so sorry it took me so long to update. I am always very happy to receive positive feedback about Akimi (and her interactions with Naruto), so your review really made me smile. Hope you liked this chapter.
yachiru-chan92: thank you for reviewing!
Guest: thank you so much for reviewing and sorry it took me more than a year to come back!
AkashimaUchiha: thank you for reviewing and sorry for the delay (my worst one yet). So yes, I am still still alive. Ups. I hope you liked the chapter.
FlyingLinguineMonster: thank you so much for reviewing and sorry for the enormous delay. Your note about coots is very much appreciated. I have edited the chapters and now I just have to re-update them (it's rather boring so it may take me some time lol). I hope you liked Hinata in this chapter, but I am truthfully not at ease writing her (probably why I haven't kept her the same age as the other characters) however if it goes well I may have her get closer to Team 7 in general. After all she is now in the same year as Konohamaru and company, so there are ways to keep her in contact with the main characters. About politics: very nice suggestion, I tried to keep it mind, let me know if I manage to do it.
The confrontation scene… ah, that was difficult to write. I wanted angst and I probably didn't manage it very well, but on some level it was supposed to be lopsided. Kyūbi is influencing Naruto, and it's like a very strong drug, so Naruto's reaction was greatly exaggerated but deep down he is angry with Hiruzen and Jiraiya. I'll try to address the issue more during training as they try to figure out a way to limit Kyūbi's influence. Hope that cleared up. I hope also you liked the chapter!
Matjaz: thank you so much for reviewing, I always enjoy hearing the interaction between my duo is enjoyed by others. I am not ashamed to say is my favourite part to write! I am sorry for the late update and I hope you liked the chapter 36 .
OnePieceFAN2012: thank you so much for reviewing! Yes indeed and the most destructive parts are yet to come. I am so sorry for the enormous delay and I hope you liked the chapter if you sticked with me.
scotty26: thank you so much for reviewing! I always smile when a reader tells me they can't stop reading (it happens to me as a reader as well, so I do understand). I didn't like the finale of the manga that much, but that ship sailed for me after the Invasion of Pain with the mass resurrection thing. I hate the mass resurrection thing (even though Kabuto totally pulls off the super villain thing). I hope you enjoyed the rest of the story as well!
skyartsflammingavion: thank you so much for your kind review. And no trouble at all, I mean given my crazy schedule in updating I can't really complain. I am always happy to hear that my readers enjoy Akimi and I must say that Team 7's relationship is one of the things I am must proud of in this story! So thank you, your review has truly made me smile (ultimately it's what manages to get me out of writing blocks) I hope you liked this chapter as well if you are still sticking with me!
vsncheze: thank you so much for reviewing and sorry for the delay in updating. To answer your observation. 1. I never realised that was Itachi goal, however as I see things he is actually following orders and doing a testing, recon mission. This Naruto is much more dangerous than the canon one and that will probably result in a more aggressive Akatsuki. Besides he may also imagine Danzō could use the invasion as an excuse to take power in Konoha. 2. The Great Council shall be explained in greater details has soon as they convene. It has consistent powers. I think of the Hokage as a dictator yes, but more in the terms of Ancient Rome history than of the totalitarianisms of last centuries. That is a military leader that has full power only in times of emergency. Of course, Konoha is a ninja village which makes military matters very central, so he is kind of the guy in charge all the time, but he can't also ignore the Council either. He needs the backing of civilians (food, weapons) and ninja (actual manpower). 3. Hope you liked Hinata in this chapter. 4. The clans: I decided to stick just with the averages actually, creating other clans is quite troublesome and I think the Kuramas are dead or almost extinct if I remember that arc well. 5. Sasuke is as strong as in canon, albeit he doesn't know Chidori. He is not really the focus of the story, so I prefer to show off is abilities if and when there is an actual confrontation. He won't be a "serious" antagonist until Shippūden anyway.
Thanks again for the review, I always enjoy criticism. I hope you liked the chapter.
Rain-of-Jazz chapter: thank you so much for reviewing. I am sorry I was so late updating! I am not sure yet whether the mask man will have the same goals he has in canon, but I have time to figure it out xd I can tell you for sure that Akimi will really really hate him though and will immediately try to figure out a seal to stop him from fading away in another reality. Akimi thinks everything can be solved with seals… and given that I love Fūinjutsu I tend to agree with her. Lol.
Anonymous JPC: thanks a lot for reviewing! I am sorry I was so late updating. You have made some very nice points. You are right about roles getting repetitive, or even better exaggerated. I kind of took that from canon, the way character's flaws are very emphasised and used as comic relief (i.e. Jiraiya being a pervert, Gai being… well Gai, Naruto being very childish etc.) Naruto is always being happy (both in canon and here) and this thing to Kyūbi is forcing him to face his anger and bitterness. Akimi is paranoid (very paranoid) and that is ultimately because she is afraid of Kuroken. His reappearance is hopefully going to be the breaking point for her too. She isn't going to suddenly become a trusting and open person though. Lol.
About politics: I am not sure I get what you are saying, but it's probably because it did get in the story as an afterthought. I did plan to get Tsunade back even though Sarutobi survived, but without the whole drama of Danzō being a dick thrown into it. So I actually need a couple of chapters to set things in places. I do think politics are the focus of this chapter and will probably be central in several of the next instalments. Hope you liked the chapter!
Kit: thank you so much for reviewing. Sorry for the delay in updating. I can tell you that some of the thing you hope may become partly true and I am definitely exploring the Yin/Yang Release thing for both Akimi and Naruto as soon as they get stronger, maybe even before Shippūden. Hope you liked the chapter.
TheNotSoPedoBear: thank you very much for reviewing. Sorry for the delay in updating. This was a very political chapter, so I hope I haven't disrupted the balance too much! Next chapter will have more action.
AkashimaUchiha thank you so much for reviewing. I am always glad to hear that my readers like Akimi since she is my own creation and all. Sorry for the enormous delay in updating. Hope you liked the chapter.
Anarchy in Dark Places: thank you so much for reviewing and sorry for the late update. I know what you mean and honestly I didn't like Shino myself as much as I do now. Writing him has been unexpectedly fun and rewarding. I must say I am a little worried about writing the interaction between him and Jiraiya and the actual training bits, but I'll figure something out. I hope you liked this chapter.
Skeleus: thank you so much for reviewing, and sorry for the late update. Hope you enjoyed this instalment.
NATSUxERZA 123456: thank you so much for reviewing. I apologize for the very late update. To answer your question, well it's a rather sticky situation. Kurama has not yet being converted by Naruto's positive influence, so right now it is a mass of malevolent chakra that actually influences Naruto, making him very angry. Naruto doesn't like the fox, has blamed it for his shitty life actually, so discovering that someone else is actually responsible has shaken him to the core. (On top of everything else, like the invasion, Akatsuki etc.) However, Naruto wants to know what Kurama knows about the man who actually attacked Konoha so he is not going to ignore him. He will be very careful though. They aren't going to be friends any time soon either, it will be a long and slow process. But they will find out they share more than they thought quite soon.
Kunai94: thank you so much for reviewing and sorry I am updating so late. I hope you like how the Hinata/Team 7 conversation went.
CHAPTER NOTES:
So I am doing this very quickly because honestly I'd be so glad if you guys arrived until here I wouldn't want to bore you. I tend to over-think a lot about my stories in general.
First, Hinata and Team 7. Writing the interaction between Hinata and Akimi was especially tricky, I do hope I did a good job.
Second, the thing about Shibi and Hiruzen plotting together and Shibi deciding he wants to deceive Danzō. This idea literally ambushed me while I was writing, so I am not sure if it's believable or not. Let me know if it makes any sense to you.
Third, the decoy strategy of Team 7. It was a tribute to Kage Bunshin (which is quite possible my favourite technique ever), but I am not sure I explained things clearly. So aside from powerhouse Naruto, Akimi and Shino duplicated once (the team saying goodbye to Kakashi), while Jiraiya duplicated twice: he had also a clone meeting with Danzō. This was mainly to scare Danzō, because the old man thinks he has duplicated many times and still showed a massive power in terms of sheer chakra. I hope the fact the true Jiraiya has actually avoided detection is believable, I mean the man is Konoha's Spy Master, right?
Next up: Kisame and Itachi in Konoha + the training begins
