She could peak through the madness sometimes, see with clarity the situation at hand. See that she was deluding herself. That Zuko and Katara had beaten her several months ago. Nevertheless, she replayed their battle over and over, tracing her steps, visualizing the thousands of ways she could have won. Almost perfect. Just a hair out of place. That's what she'd say to herself when she wasn't talking to Ursa's reflection in the mirror. She'd mutter it to herself in the hallways of the institution.
The nurses and doctors all thought she was deteriorating, that she'd never resurface from the insanity, all alone with no one coming during visiting hours. That is, until a pretty girl in a pink dress showed up and requested to see Princess Azula.
Azula was in the sitting room when Ty Lee entered. When their eyes met, Ty Lee shrieked and ran towards her, throwing her arms around her neck.
"Ty Lee," Azula said, her voice void of emotion, "Why are you here? Why are you here after what I did to you?"
"I would have come sooner if Zuko didn't keep your location a secret!"
"I don't understand," Azula said. "I don't understand." She turned to stare out the window and wished to disappear. She was ashamed of herself, of her defeat, of the way she had treated her friend. She wished that Ursa would stop staring at her, disappointed from the mirror. She wanted a redo. Azula never loses. It was just a hair out of place. Just a hair out of place. "I threw you in jail."
"Uh-huh, I met some great friends," Ty Lee answered cheerfully.
"And you still want to see me? After all that?"
Ty Lee took Azula's hand and giggled. "I know. I'm hopeless, aren't I?"
