He couldn't stand to see her cry, he couldn't. All over some stupid guy who wasn't worth her time.
She deserved better. So, so much better.
She just needed someone who understood her.
Her shaky form was soft in his arms. He had a sudden urge to see her face, so he pulled back from their little embrace to look at her eyes, her nose⦠her lips.
She was staring at him funny. This whole thing was ludicrous, if he was wrong about this, it would ruin everything.
Dipper made up his mind stupidly, hastily. He didn't want to think about consequences.
She looked hesitant. "Dipper, what's wrong?"
He looked away, just for a second. "Mabel. Don't freak out."
Then he started leaning in. He knew she knew what his intentions were now, and he waited for her to pull away.
She didn't. So he let himself kiss her.
It was innocent. They kept their mouths closed. But it was full of so much pent up pressure and emotion that Dipper could feel the outline of her braces through her lips.
After a beat, they pulled apart with a tiny smacking noise and opened their eyes, just staring at each other. He tried to name the emotion on her face. Love? Worry? Relief? Maybe it was all of the above.
It was all out in the open, and neither of the twins could seem to find anything to say. Dipper cleared his throat, staring at his ratty old shoes. "Thanks for not freaking out," he managed to get out with a pathetic little chuckle. "I thought you were going to punch me and run away screaming or something."
"Welp," Mabel shrugged, "I didn't."
They caught each other's gaze and like a magnet they were drawn together again, this time for a kiss that wasn't so innocent. When it was over Dipper didn't want to move away, so he just rested his forehead on hers. They were both breathing heavily.
"We got problems, don't we." Mabel commented, still panting.
He couldn't help it, his face formed a sad, wry smile. "You said it sister."
And with that he gathered her up and kissed her again.
