Finally back…Sorry for the long wait. But, hey, it is never too late to update a fanfiction, right? KWell, anyway, enjoy.
Danny wished he could talk to his friends about Jazz and her strange behavior over the past few days but he knew it wasn't his place...Whatever was going on with Jazz was her business. Not his friends.
"Hey." He sat down with them at their usual lunch table.
"Hey Danny," Sam said nonchalantly, inspecting her food with disgust.
Tucker ravenously ate his own lunch.
Danny plopped his lunch box down in front of him and emptied its contents.
"Did you guys hear about that ghost attack today?" Sam asked.
"Ghost?" Tucker nearly spit his food out.
Danny shrugged. "Kids our age spread a lot of rumors..."
"Danny, this is big. This means that your parents are right! Ghosts really do exist. Plus, it gives me a chance to prove my mom wrong. And that monster from the other day must've been a ghost too... And your parents' careers aren't as wacky and pointless as we thought!" Sam exclaimed. "No offense... But anyway, don't you want it to be true?"
"Well, what else did everyone say?"
"They said there was this ghost girl that came in and saved everyone!"
"With white hair and green eyes?" Tucker questioned.
Sam nodded excitedly.
Danny quickly turned his head to him, slightly shocked. "You know -?"
Tucker turned his PDA around and showed Sam and Danny a picture some student from Casper High posted on their Facebook wall.
There she was. Phantom.
Seeing the ghost up close sent a shiver down Danny's back. She almost looked exactly like...of course he had thought it before but it seemed impossible. But there she was...Jazz. But different...the eye shape, facial structure, hair length and style was the same yet the coloring was strikingly different. It was kind of freaky. He shook his head and closed his eyes not able to believe it could be possible for someone to be both a ghost and a human being.
"What's wrong?" Sam asked, concerned.
"Yeah, dude, you look like you've seen a ghost," Tucker joked.
"I-it's nothing. I just kind of think I...may have figured out something..."
Sam raised a questioning brow and Tucker looked equally perplexed.
"About what?" Tucker questioned.
Danny shook his head. "I'm not sure...it couldn't even be possible to be honest."
"Spit it out Danny!" The goth girl demanded.
Danny threw his uneaten lunch back into his lunch kit. "I just realized that I - um - have an essay due next period! Sorry! I'll see you guys later!" He sprinted out of the cafeteria nearly slamming into Casper High's bully, Dash.
"Hey! Watch it Fenturd!" Dash shouted.
"Sorry," Danny uncharacteristically murmured, then took off out of the cafeteria.
Sam narrowed her eyes. "We all have PE next period..." She muttered under her breath.
Danny just lied straight to our faces. Sam thought.
Danny called his mom frantically.
"Hi sweetie, is something wrong?"
"Yes! I mean, no. I just have a quick question," Danny stammered.
"Go ahead."
"Um, is it possible for someone to be a ghost but also a human?"
"Well that's a strange question...what is this about? Have you seen a ghost?"
"No! I'm just curious."
"It's never been proven...and I couldn't say for sure. But from everything I've learned that shouldn't be possible. Unless someone is being overshadowed."
"Overshadowed?"
"That's when a ghost takes control of someone's body. Oh I'm so glad you are taking an interest in ghost hunting!"
"Okay...uh, thanks for the help. I'll see you after school." Danny hung up and breathed in sharply.
Is Jazz being possessed?
Only one way to find out...
Meanwhile, Jazz spent the rest of the day praying that she would stay solid and visible the whole day. Controlling her powers was still quite the challenge...more than she liked to admit.
It made it hard to pay attention in class.
So, when she had to take a quiz in AP Physics, she was way too focused on keeping her powers in check than the actual quiz itself. She tapped her pencil on the desk rapidly as she read the first problem.
The velocity of the... She started to read. She felt a strange tingling in her left arm and gasped to herself as she saw that it was gone. She pulled her jacket on quickly and let out a sigh of relief once it was hidden. She read the problem all the way through, nervously tapping on the desk.
So if you take the speed and the... Jazz wrote down the formula needed for the problem. The pencil fell through her intangible fingers and crashed on the floor. The noise would normally not be considered loud but in the silence of the room it echoed. Some people in the class looked over at her angrily, including Rose.
Steve, who sat to her right, handed her her pencil off from the floor and gave her a reassuring smile. She smiled back.
Most days, Danny would run up the stairs and into his bedroom as soon as he got home or go over to Sam or Tucker's houses. This was not most days.
When Jazz and Danny arrived back at home, Danny lingered in the family room where Jazz had sat down on the sofa and begun to read.
"Hey Jazz," Danny said casually, sitting next to her.
Jazz turned to him, confused. "What's up?"
"How was your day?"
"Same old same old."
"Really? Wasn't there another ghost attack?"
"There was? Oh, I didn't know about that," Jazz lied.
Danny crossed his arms, not knowing how to proceed with this conversation. Then he looked at her arm and wondered. Could she really make herself invisible? Go intangible? Was that even possible? He had the urge to touch it but looked away.
"Is...something wrong?" Jazz asked curiously.
Danny cocked his head to the side. "Not with me."
Jazz raised a brow. "What are you talking about?"
Danny stood up and turned away from her in deep thought. Should I ask? What if I am wrong and she thinks I have some mental disorder? I mean, thinking your own sister may be part ghost is a little out there!
"Uh, I've just been noticing...you've been acting different lately. Has anything happened to you that you want to talk about?"
"What?" Jazz looked at him, afraid that he may have figured her out.
"You know what I'm talking about. You must...I mean, I've thought it over in my head and it makes no sense but it's true, isn't it?"
"What's true?"
"That you're -"
A cold wisp of air escaped Jazz's mouth.
"Oh no!" Jazz shot up from the couch and got in fighting position.
"Wha-"
"Greetings, ghost child."
Out of nowhere, a tall ghost with metallic armor appeared. Danny gasped. It was the same ghost from the parking lot. He reached for his thermos in his backpack as Jazz screamed for him to run.
"I'm not going anywhere," Danny replied stubbornly.
That's when the ghost took Danny in a stranglehold.
"Let go!" Danny squirmed, clutching the ghost's firm hand around his neck.
Jazz's secret didn't matter anymore. All that mattered was that Danny was safe. Jazz stifled a short breath and changed.
Danny's eyes widened as rings formed around her and went up and down her body. She was no longer Jazz Fenton. She was Jazz Phantom. Danny grinned.I gotta remember that one.
She punched the ghost in the face, sending him falling backwards and his grasp loosening enough for Danny to escape.
Danny swung his backpack around to the front of him and pulled out the thermos and sucked the ghost in.
He closed the top.
Jazz and Danny silently stared at each other for 8 minutes.
The door to the garage opened. "Kids, we're home!" Jack yelled.
Jazz immediately turned back into her human form and both siblings hopped onto the sofa. Danny turned on the TV and the news channel flipped on. He hid the thermos behind a pillow on the couch.
Their parents walked into the living room, arms filled with groceries. Jazz and Danny casually looked at their parents and quietly said 'hi' under their breaths. "Oh you and Danny are watching the news to keep up with current events. I'm so proud!" Maddie smiled.
"Wanna help us put these groceries away?" Jack suggested.
The siblings hesitated but both nodded and got up.
The silence between them as they put away the groceries was disconcerting to their parents.
"So, how was school today?" Their dad asked.
"Good," Danny said, not mentioning the attack.
"Did you learn anything new?" Their mom asked.
"No, not really," Jazz shrugged, placing the milk in the fridge.
"Danny?"
Danny chuckled. "Yeah I learned something."
Jazz shot a warning glare at him.
"What did you learn?"
"That school is a total waste of time," he responded sassily.
Maddie put her hands on her hips with an upset look on her face.
"I know how you feel Danny-boy! But don't worry! It's all worth it in the end!" Jack said.
"Well, I'm gonna go upstairs now. See you guys at dinner," Danny said.
"Me too, I should get started on homework," Jazz made her way to the living room to grab her stuff as did Danny. He also grabbed the thermos and stuffed it in his backpack.
They walked upstairs. Danny staring at Jazz and wondering how it was at all possible that she was alive and dead at the same time.
Jazz walked into her room and slammed the door behind her which was usually wide open.
Danny tossed his stuff in his own room and ran to Jazz's door.
"Jazz," he knocked.
No answer.
"Come on, we've gotta talk about this at some point."
Still no answer.
"Jaaaaaazz."
He tried the knob but it was locked.
He groaned. He knocked again. "Jazz!"
He rolled his eyes. "Look, I'm not gonna tell anyone. I swear. Not Sam. Not Tucker. Not even mom or dad."
There was shuffling in the room. Then he heard a click in the knob and Jazz opened the door slowly, looking at Danny with sad glowing green eyes.
Whoa glowing greeneyes. I was not expecting that.
"Promise?"
"Of course," Danny replied. "What would I tell them anyway?"
Jazz smiled and hugged her brother.
Danny smiled and hugged her back.
"So," Danny pulled away from the hug, "now can I be your sidekick?"
Jazz felt a tug at the corner of her mouth.
Aight, finally got this up. Better late than never! Happy Halloween!
