Back in 1899, the Newsies assembled in Newsies Square. They were joined by the Delancey Brothers and Wiesel, who fortunately realized that 'striking' against their boss was a better option than being eaten by him. Katherine stood tall at the forefront of the crowd while Davey told Jack his plan for attack. It was amazing being told what to do by your friend who had originally been this pasifictic kid.
"Specs, Race, Albert, you take the side streets. Watch out for him."
"Romeo, Finch, Jo Jo-you take Newspaper Row."
"Crutchie, Elmer-you take Pulitzer's office. Don't let him get inside."
"Or die trying!" Elmer proclaimed, and Crutchie gave him a sideways look. "Sheesh, lighten up, Elmer."
The newsie turned on him. "WE ARE BEING ATTACKED BY PULITZER WHO IS NOW A CANNIBAL AND YOU WANT ME TO LIGHTEN UP? I DON'T THINK SO!"
"Okay, okay, sheesh…."
"And the rest of you stay 'ere with me and Dave," Jack finished.
The newsies dispersed, each going to his assigned area. The air became thicker and thicker as each kid tried to prepare for what lay ahead. Of course they couldn't, because they had never been attacked by a cannibal before. Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the streets. Morris and Oscar readied their brass knuckles, Mush readied his broom, Henry readied his slingshot and Jack readied his fists before they all realized they had guns. They picked those up and tensed even further, waiting for this alleged cannibal.
A scream sounded from down Newspaper Row by the office building of The World, along with Elmer and Crutchie's frantic cries. Slowly those petered away and Pulitzer himself appeared in front of the rest of the newsies.
"Come to strike again, boys?"
"No, Joe," Davey bravely challenged, "We've come to put an end to you. Once and for all."
"Once and for all!" several of the newsies chimed in, standing in the back.
The attack began as Pulitzer charged them all. He went for Les first, but miraculously Morris and Oscar chased him away. Morris lost his pinky finger but kept fighting, devoted to the cause of destroying his old boss. Guns split the air and it was Katherine who landed the final blow, tears streaming down her face.
The last enemy of the newsies, Cannibal Joseph Pulitzer, was dead.
Elmer ran back up the street, screaming his head off and holding a crutch. "HE'S DEAD HE'S DEAD, CRUTCHIE'S DEAD, PULITZER ATE HIM, I SAW IT, HE'S DEAD AND HE WANTED ME TO LIGHTEN UP ABOUT THIS WHOLE THING-"
All the newsies crowded around Elmer, crying and hugging. They couldn't believe their best friend, the best ray of sunshine in the whole city, was dead. What a horrible price to pay for being ripped out of their lives, transported into the future and then back into the past again, and having to defeat a monstrous flesh-eating newspaper giant. Even Morris and Oscar cried, though that may have been due to Morris' pinky finger.
None of the newsies would forget the casualties that day: the most important one being Crutchie, and the other being Morris Delancey's pinky finger.
Because of the convoluted time streams that were switched that day, David Jacobs opted to call his account of the attack, The Switching Hour.
It certainly was a better title than what Jack had suggested, which had been The Cannibal Hour. But Davey knew he needed a title that would draw people in from all over the world and persuade them to read it out loud at popular venues.
Even the cast of Newsies the Musical.
