― Distorted ―

What is love?

What is it exactly?

Mai pondered over the aforesaid thought, her eyes following the drifting clouds. Her elbow placed against the desk and her cheek resting on her palm, Mai gazed at the azure sky, her chemistry professor blaring on at the other end of the classroom.

The clouds kept drifting away, moved by the soft wind that blew.

She was lost, so she knew.

Lost in the wavering sky.

The bell rang, breaking her momentary trance. Breaking the bond that had formed between her and the distorted, wavering sky.

Mai picked up her bag tediously, placed it on the desk, went through it's contents and packed up to leave. She waved at her few friends dreamily.

'I've work.' She grumbled but her tone unable to hide the excitement. They nodded and she dragged herself out of the classroom.

Walking down the lane had never been so fun. She whistled softly as she tread towards the usual place. Her eyes on the sky, she failed to notice the stares showered on her. She was lost. Lost for sure, in the blue of the sky. She hoped to reach early to spend more time with him.

Hope - was that all love was about?

Pushing through the crowd, Mai noticed the building where she spent most of her time. It was her second home. Probably, her only home where she had someone beside her.

Climbing up the stairs, Mai felt a funny turmoil in her heart; flutters, tightening and whatnot.

Excitement - was that all love was about?

Pushing open the door, she met with what she had anticipated. A figure clad in black, waiting with arms crossed. Soft black hair, pale skin, long legs, more importantly those deep, charming, overwhelming blue eyes.

Anticipation - was that all love was about?

'Naru.' Ah, a tremor surfaced in her voice.

'You're early,'

'Am I?' Nervous and flustered, she brought her eyes to her black, shiny shoes.

Uneasy conversations - was that all love was about?

'Yes,' He murmured, 'quite uncharacteristic of you.'

Warmth crept into her cheeks.

'Well, I can be early too!' She said, the tremor in her voice intensifying. 'It's not like I'm always late!'

'Hn.'

Petty quarrels - was that all love was about?

'Would you like some tea?' She said, calming herself down.

'Hn.'

Rushing into the kitchen, she avoided the resting gaze on her. Mai tried not to blush but it was too hard to control her cheeks.

Ah, how embarrassing.

Embarrassment - was that all love was about?

Placing the teacups artistically on the tray, Mai poured out the hot liquid she had prepared carefully into the arranged teacups. Sighing softly, Mai took it first to a grumpy assistant in the other room and then she prepared to knock on the dreadful door.

Pushing it open after hearing a soft 'hm', she entered the congested yet neat office slowly. Placing the teacup on his desk, she held the tray against her chest and waited.

He looked up at her, wooden faced.

'...' He stared at her.

'...' She stared at him.

'Thank you.'

Mai looked at him, her eyes slightly wider than usual. He nodded and went back to his work stoically.

Warmth crept into her cheeks. A small awkward smile rested on her lips.

What was love?

It was just a distorted mixture of unexpected elements that left everyone clueless.
