Hi everyone, so sorry I haven't updated in forever. here is Chapter 5 though if you want it:)
Things had been quiet in LaPush after Jimmy had left. I settled into my job and got used to hanging out with the pack and their girls. I was honestly starting to feel at home. Paul was popping by the house more and more frequently which was annoying Gwen to no end, but I couldn't help but enjoy his company. He was funny and charming, a welcome distraction really.
After a month in LaPush my car finally arrived. I loved that damn car even though Jimmy had bought it for me, but luckily the title was in my name and he didn't pitch a fit when I sent for it. It seemed like he accepted we were finally over.
I hadn't really minded riding around with Gwen or Embry but there was no better way to clear my head than a long drive, it was something I had been desperately in need of. With all the craziness that had been going on, I needed some alone time to process.
I was blasting classic rock and was half way to Forks when she died on me. No warning just dead in the middle of the road. I have shitty luck sometimes truly. Thank god half the pack were mechanics, I just hoped they would give me a good price, preferably free.
After 15 minutes of waiting for the tow truck Paul showed up to rescue me. I wasn't clear on what my feelings were for him, and I wasn't sure how I felt about having to ride all the way back to Lapush with him alone.
Anytime we had hung out there had always been at least one other person there. I had always been thankful for that because although I did like him, sometimes I would catch him giving me these intense looks that I couldn't read and it was weird.
Gwen was still very wary of him even after I pointed out to her that he had attempted to slaughter my annoying ex. Her answer was a simple "I told you, the pack is just protective"
But I suppose neither of our opinions mattered because he was my only option for a ride at the moment.
"You alright?" he asked stepping out of the tow truck.
Maybe I was just ovulating but fuck it all if he didn't look good. He had on his typical black t shirt, jeans and workboots. Who knew I was so attracted to that? The sight was almost worth the car breaking down.
"Yeah" I answered after I stopped ogling him. "Annoyed but fine."
"hop in the truck" he motioned with his head " It'll just take me a minute to hook this up."
"Eva's car broke down outside Forks" Jake yelled from the office.
I panicked for a second and then tried to act cool before anyone noticed. Luckily I was under a car and it would've been hard for the guys to see. I gave myself a mental chill out. She was clearly fine if she called for a tow. Quil usually does the towing but I'd be damned if I was going to waste one second with my imprint.
"I'll get her" I volunteered and ran out to the truck before anyone could stop me.
I hated towing, it was a pain in the ass, but it would be my first chance to get her all by herself. And I'm pretty sure I'd seen a porno that started with this exact scenario.
'Please god let life imitate art'
I saw her car dead in the middle of the road and she was leaning against the hood looking like every bit the goddess she was.
I loved how she looked, she always made an effort whenever she left the house or had company. Not saying she didn't look good naturally, I'd seen her after nights of drinking and she still looked fucking beautiful, but she was an old Hollywood type and I could appreciate that.
"You Alright?" I asked, using every ounce of restraint I had not to rush over to her and check for injuries.
She looked at me and for a split second I swear she was checking me out, but it could just've been wishful thinking.
"Yeah" she answered "Annoyed but fine."
"Hop in" I motioned her to the truck "It'll just take a minute to hook this up."
I hooked up her car as fast as I could and then got in the truck where she was waiting. Her scent was everywhere, vanilla and honey, and I was struggling to think of coherent sentences. Luckily she did the talking.
" I can't believe this. I just got this fucker back today and it already gave out on me" she said frustratedly.
"We'll fix it" I assured her. "It's a nice car and it's new so it's probably nothing big."
The next 15 minutes she talked to me about nothing in particular but it was the best damn conversation I ever had. I really needed to tell her about the imprint and get things going but I was still terrified that she would tell me to fuck off.
Once we got to the shop I showed her the lounge and told her I'd look at the car. Technically there were 2 other cars ahead of hers but none of the guys said anything. Imprints came first, everyone knew that.
"Dude, come look at this." Jake called me over to the gas tank. "There's a bunch of water in here, her engine's ruined."
Water doesn't just get in the gas tank; someone put it there.
"That fucking asshole." I growled throwing down the wrench I was holding to investigate for myself.
I knew it was her dick ex boyfriend, who just happened to have her car sitting in his garage for the last month. I wish Seth and Embry would've at least let me stab him.
"Eva" I called her over and explained the situation.
"Godamn son of a bitch, did he seriously do this? How the hell am I supposed to get around? How much does it cost to replace an engine?" She fired rapid questions at me and Jake.
"Honestly I would just buy a new car." Jake said to her.
"Ugh, what am I supposed to do in the meantime?" She asked frustrated.
"You can use mine"
The words were out of my mouth before I even thought about what I was saying.
I had this thing about my car, it was my baby a 1969 black Chevelle. I didn't let anyone ride in it let alone drive it.
I looked at Jake's shocked face for a minute before turning back to Eva.
"That's really nice of you Paul, but I can't take your car. I'm not going to inconvenience you first of all, and I'm betting that's a stick shift which I have absolutely no idea how to drive anyways." Eva answered.
The weirdest thing was that I wanted her to drive that car; I wanted people to see her in it and know that she was mine. I wanted people to know that I was serious about her. People like Gwen, in particular.
"Well then I better teach you"
Quil dropped the box of tools he was carrying with that statement and I just shrugged and led Eva towards my car.
"Are you sure this is okay? Don't you have to finish working? Are you going to be mad when I kill this car 500 times."
I honestly forgot I had another hour left of my shift. Technically I half owned the shop so it didn't really matter anyway.
"It's fine, and I promise I won't get mad if you kill it 500 hundred times"
She killed it at least 30 times and it took us over an hour to get to Embry's but it was worth every second because she finally got the hang of it and Gwen's face was priceless when we pulled up.
I was honestly shocked when he offered up his car, and more shocked when he continued the offer after I told him I didn't know how to drive it. I wasn't oblivious to the fact that he never let anyone in that car and I heard Quil drop a tool box when Paul suggested I take it.
I was looking for hidden meanings behind his gesture, I mean I knew he wanted in my pants, but this seemed excessive. Once again I was nervous to be in the car with him. I knew how to handle dudes who want me to bone them, but I was never good at dealing with guys who actually liked me, and Paul seemed to.
"Are you sure about this?" I asked again.
"Positive" he grinned at me.
I slid into the driver's seat of his pristine car.
"Okay now press the clutch down and ease onto the gas." He instructed. It took me about 5 times but the car eventually moved.
Good now press the clutch again switch to 2nd gear" He instructed as he put his tattooed hand over mine to show me how.
I swear I felt a sizzle of electricity when he did so, although I tried to ignore it so I didn't crash and kill us. The tension in the car was palpable and the smell of pine and cigarettes wasn't helping me out any.
It took fucking forever to get home and we stalled in the road dozens of times, but surprisingly for a guy who was supposed to be a hot tempered son of a bitch, he was very patient.
When I pulled up into the driveway I could see Gwen looking out the kitchen window with her mouth hung open. I shrugged at her when she came outside.
"Are you absolutely positive you want me to borrow this?" I asked him again as I stepped out of the car. "How are you going to get to work?"
"I'll catch a ride with one of the guys. Don't worry about it." He answered running his hand through his hair and giving me a side grin.
"Your letting her borrow your car?" Gwen gaped at him.
"Sure why not?"
"What happened to yours" She turned to me.
"Jimmy fucked it up. I gotta buy a new one." I replied with a look that told her I would explain later.
Just then we heard a wolf howl in the forest
"Shit, I'm late." Paul cursed. "I gotta go. I'll see you later Eva." And he ran off into the tree line.
Gwen turned to me and glared "What the hell is going on?"
"Jimmy put water in my gas tank, its destroyed. So Paul offered me his car." I answered casually.
She didn't need answers; she hadn't given me any.
No one had ever explained what was going on with Paul. Sometimes I thought he had imprinted on me, but from what I understood of it the guy has to be with her like 24/7 and I only saw Paul a few times a week and we were never alone. He never tried anything when we were together either, and from what Gwen said she and Embry were at it like rabbits after like an hour of meeting each other.
So basically I decided that everyone thought it was weird that Paul was being nice to a woman and becoming friends with me which was something he seemed to have had trouble with in the past.
Gwen looked at me concerned "He's not making you do anything you don't want to is he?"
I stared at her incredulously
"He didn't assault me on the way home if that's what you're suggesting. Jesus Gwen I can take care of myself you know. I am the older sister."
She sighed "Look I know you can take care of yourself. And I can also tell you kind of like him but I just need to tell you some things about him before this goes any further."
I knew Gwen hated Paul the most out of all of Embry's pack mates. But he didn't seem that bad to me, I mean besides the first night when he called me a bitch and a cunt …and a whore. But he did apologize for that and it was before he had even met me so I wasn't too fazed by it. He had actually been very sweet to me since then. I liked hanging out with him.
Not to mention the guy looked like he walked straight out of a firefighter's Calendar.
" You don't know him that well, Eva. If you knew…" Gwen said cryptically though she looked torn as to whether or not she should say anything.
"If I knew what?" I asked her warily.
Of course the man I liked had skeletons' in his closet, of course. But as long as they weren't the skeletons of dead puppies or ex girlfriends I would be okay.
"Embry's going to be pissed I told you this but Paul used to hit his last girlfriend. Hell, he smacked her in the face right in front of everybody at a bonfire a few months ago. That was a shit show." She threw her head back at the memory.
Oh Jesus.
"She sent him to jail, though Chief Swan pulled some strings to get the charges dropped, not sure how he managed that actually. But anyways, they were always fighting" She said waving her hands and pulling herself back on topic.
"Paul drinks too much, he fights too much, he bones anything with tits; He's not a good guy"
Oh God. Me, Evangeline Murphy: Strident feminist and former domestic violence counselor; was falling for an alcoholic, womanizing, woman beating asshole. Shoot me now. I knew he had a less than savory past but, I didn't realize it was this bad.
He went to jail for beating up his girlfriend! I was sick to my stomach at the thought of him, there was no way I could act on those feelings that were beginning to grow for him now.
"So what's he doing then? With the car and the apology and trying to kill Jimmy. Is he just that desperate to fuck me?"
Was this all a game to him? Lure me in, get me where he wanted me, bang me the never speak to me again?
Gwen thought hard about the question. "No I think he's being genuine, he likes you, he likes you a lot and he's obviously trying not to fuck things up, but he will eventually. He always does."
"Okay, okay. Shit." I said calming myself down. " Thanks for telling me Gwen. I don't need to be in any situation like that after what happened with Jimmy. Do good men even exist anymore, or did you manage to find the only one?" I asked her, suddenly very jealous of her and Embry.
"I'm sorry Eva." She said.
I inhaled deeply. "Its alright. I'll just avoid him."
She cringed again. There was more to this story I could tell.
"What is it Gwen?"
"Avoiding him might be a little difficult. I don't think he's going to let that happen." She explained gingerly.
"Why not? I never even kissed him. Surely he isn't going to become some creepy stalker after hanging out with him a few times." But with my luck he probably would. I sure knew how to pick them.
"He imprinted on you." She said blankly.
Fuck.
What did this mean? Why would he imprint on me? What was I going to do about this? Of course the thought had gone through my mind a few times but I never truly thought he had.
It all made sense now. that is what everyone had been hiding.
Now that I knew he imprinted on me I saw how forced it all was. He didn't really like me, and he wasn't really that compatible with me after all. For fucks sake, minutes before he saw me he hated me, and then our eyes met and he was hooked? That just didn't make any sense. I just felt kind of stupid and used. My attraction was real; his was not.
"Say something" Gwen urged noting my stunned face.
I stood there with my mouth gaped open. "What do you want me to say Gwen? I can't believe this is happening to me."
"Tell me about it. I can't believe you got stuck with Paul." She groaned.
"Look I know how imprinting works" Gwen went on "I know he seems perfect for you, like he would never hurt you, and hell maybe he wouldn't. But you are my sister and I don't want him for you. You deserve better than Paul Lahote."
I started to panic a little at the thought of beings paired up with Paul for the rest of my life. All my plans flew out the window.
I calmed myself; I didn't have to accept the imprint. I would just leave. He would get over it eventually.
"I'm not stuck with him, Gwen. I'll just go home to Chicago and act like this never happened." I explained my plan to her.
"It doesn't work like that" She said sadly "As much as I don't want to see you with Paul, its inevitable. You'll feel the imprint too; you'll be drawn to him."
I already did, I was drawn to him.
"Why would you tell me about all the horrible things he's done if you knew I had to be with him?" I yelled at her angrily. "What do expect me to do now!?"
It was like being in car accident, I could see what was coming but there was nothing I could do about it.
Gwen looked upset. "I'm sorry! I wanted you to go into this with all the facts. No one else would have told you. They just want you and Paul together, but I want you to make your own choice."
"But you just said I'll feel the imprint too!" I continued to rant at her.
"You will, and it's hard to deny it, Emily is the only one who even tried and you see how well that worked out." She said exasperatedly.
I sat down and rubbed my face "What should I do?"
I honestly had no idea. I knew the way I felt when I was with Paul and it was a good feeling. But I knew now that it wasn't true, this was all magic. And for as good and comfortable as those feeling were it didn't change the fact that he had hurt other women. I didn't think I could be with someone like that. He would be doing that to me if it weren't for the imprint.
"I don't know." Gwen told me "It's your choice to start something with him or not. That's why I told you."
"Ugh" I groaned and threw myself onto her sofa. "Why does this have to be so complicated, why can't it just be like how you and Embry were? Eyes meet and you just knew.
She shrugged "Because it was Embry and he's a sweetheart, always was apparently."
"Are you happy Gwen?"
"I'm really happy, but I can't help but wonder sometimes if his feelings are genuine…if he wasn't a wolf would he want me at all?" She admitted.
"I think he would" I assured her "You guys are an obvious match, you're really compatible with each other. Paul and I on the other hand are practically opposites."
"Sometimes opposites attract."
I wish my sister would make up her damn mind. She was so frustrating. She hated Paul, and told me all these terrible things about him, but somehow made it seem that she kind of knew we would end up together despite everything.
Later on that night I was making tea in the kitchen when Embry walked in to grab leftovers for dinner. I was still pissed that he tried to hide Paul's past from me. How could I make a correct and educated decision if I didn't have all the facts?
"Why didn't' you tell me about Paul's last girlfriend" Embry froze for a minute with the plate of food in his hands. He then looked at me and sighed. "I'm going to kill Gwen for telling you that."
"Don't' blame her for this. You have all been keeping secrets from me. He imprinted on me and no one said anything," I stated angrily.
Embry thought for a moment. "Paul should've been the one to tell you about the imprint and his past. He was going to, he was just waiting for the right time."
"I don't think I want to be anywhere near Paul!" I shouted. I was so confused, part of me liked him so much and felt like he would never hurt me; but doubt had been planted in my mind, Gwen had known him longer and better after all.
"Don't be like that." Embry told me "Gwen should have never said any of that because none of that matters anymore. He will never hurt you; it would kill him if you were hurt. And its not like Amy was an innocent victim, she always attacked him first."
I sat down with a humpf and began to drink my tea. I had no clue what to do. The fact that Paul wasn't just running around beating helpless women, made me feel slightly better about the situation, but it still sucked.
Gwen came into the kitchen and Embry questioned her about why she had told me about the imprint and Paul's violent streak.
"Because he's not safe Embry!" Gwen shouted. "Jesus, we joked around about how the gods wouldn't be so cruel as to make someone spend the rest of their life with Paul!"
"He's not that person anymore Gwen" Embry soothed her. "I wish I could make you feel how imprinting feels, then you would understand. It's like…nothing matters but your imprint, they're your world. You would rather throw yourself in front of a bus than see them stub their toe."
"That's how you feel Embry, that doesn't mean it's the same." I argued, but he just shook his head.
"It's the same, it always is. I can see his thoughts remember? He wants to make sure you're safe and happy and it would kill him if he knew you were doubting him." Embry tried to explain.
I wasn't convinced.
"You should just talk to him, let him explain things." Embry suggested.
I would talk to him eventually but at the moment I felt like my head was going to explode from it all. Paul Lahote would just have to wait for now.
