Disclaimer: I don't own NARUTO! I only own this plot!

AN: I HATE people who read through every chapter and comment on how bad it is! if you don't like then don't read past chapter 1!

AN2: SORRY FOR THE LOOOONG WAIT! don't kill me because I have a billion excuses and they're all valid but to sum it all up, all I have to say is one word SCHOOL. I already established that I am obsessed with good grades(blame my mom) I didn't do good in my exams last year and so I decided to take a break…I also had a really sucky summer last year and I just lost all motivation to write. This was written bit by bit and was only completed by the persistence of a few wonderful reviewers.

THANKS Hinata10918, Uzumaki Ricky and ESPECIALLY , for giving me the push to make this update.

AN3: Don't expect rapid updates, I'm looking at college applications AND exams now, exams which are in exactly three weeks so yeah.

Chapter 16 The War Begins

Naruto stood atop a tree overlooking the arena, his eyes focused on the two females who had entered the field. He was confident that there were no jutsu's in Sakura's arsenal that could do Hinata any harm and so he turned and disappeared in the tree's moving quickly and silently to the catacombs. Once there he went to the room he had dubbed "His" and changed into his Reaper get-up, his mind drifting as he methodically pulled on his mask; the seal on Gaara had been broken−something he realized when the three sand siblings arrived in the arena and though that was a good thing because it meant Gaara wouldn't go berserk it also meant he lost the easiest way to start the war. Gaara going berserk had started it in the past but that wouldn't happen now that Shukaku was sane…then again all that he really needed was for Gaara to lose control of his powers which now that he thought about wouldn't be that hard.

Without another thought on Gaara Naruto made his way to the heart of the forbidden catacombs, there he found Haku in her Shiro outfit and Zabuza in his Kuro outfit alongside three of his fox summons who he had transformed, they went by the names Shi, Mi, Ro and Ai; they were quadruplets and therefore shared the same short cropped brown hair and blue eyes, no one would be able to tell Ro was not a girl if not for the fact that he wore a shorts whereas the girls wore kimono's−but even then it wasn't obvious.

"I called you all here for a last minute debriefing," Naruto said, his voice under the usual distortion.

Everyone stood straight with his entrance, looking dead ahead as he came to a stop in front of them "Shiro you are to take North, Kuro the East, Mi and Ai the West, Ro and Shi the South. The dispelling of my clone will be the signal to start, do not engage the enemy until you get that signal." He held up four seals and handed them out. "These block the chakra of anyone within a 50 feet radius, use them however you wish. You are to take out as many as possible before the arrival of the Konoha reinforcements then retreat."

Ro held up a hand and Naruto nodded for him to continue "Why don't we just kill them all? I'm sure we could do that before the reinforcement arrive."

"Because it would be suspicious if a war started and the other side mysteriously end up dead aaannnd I don't feel like doing all the work. I'm only doing this because it benefits me greatly and to keep Hinata safe…Konoha should fight Konoha battle's."

Ro looked confused "But aren't you a part of Konoha?"

"For now and that's the only reason they have my assistance…that and Hinata. Now back to what I was saying, kill as much as you can but not all of them, the forces outside are still plenty despite Kuro whittling them down. After retreating Kuro and Shiro are to change and join in the battle."

"Ehh?!" Ai pouted "They get to have more fun than us!"

Naruto rolled his eyes though it went unseen behind his mask "Well they are actual Konoha shinobi."

Ai continued to pout but nodded all the same.

"Dismissed."

There was a whoosh of air and everyone disappeared. Naruto pulled off his mask and made his way to the control room; it was a large room that had a bunch of television screens hooked up to the entire right wall of the room monitoring Konoha. Currently Mizuki and three other fox summons were watching the screens. It had taken him all of two days to break Mizuki into submission but even then he didn't trust the man and therefore he ensured someone was always with him, hence the three Kitsune's who had undergone the transformation jutsu.

"Get me Temari's location," Naruto said as he stepped inside the room. He took a seat in one of the couches to the back and watched as the Kitsune's hurried to bring him a glass of tea−which he politely declined−while Mizuki found Temari.

"She seems to be on her way to the bathroom Reaper-sama," Mizuki said.

Naruto nodded "Yoroichi," he said, one of the Kitsune's looked up.

"Hai Shinigami-sama?"

"Beat her within an inch of her life."

"Hai Shinigami-sama."

Sakura stood across from Hinata, watching the Hyuuga with a sharp gaze, not wanting to miss even a twitch; they were both waiting on the signal to start. The pinkette didn't have any otherworldly thoughts that she could actually defeat the Hyuuga but she at least wanted to land a scratch, not for pride or anything like that but because of a bet−a life or death kind of bet.

"Ha! Sakura just hurry up and forfeit, there's no way you're beating Hinata! You won't even be able to scratch her." Ino jeered, giving Sakura a smug smile.

"Oh yeah? I bet I could last longer than you did against Mimiko and land a hit!" Sakura shouted. Ino's eye twitched and a scowl bloomed on her face. Hinata who had been standing between the two, held up her hands in hopes to calm them down, but by the lightening flashing between their heads, there was no way it was working.

"Oh yeah?!" Ino shouted back, pushing Hinata aside so that she could stand closer to Sakura. "Wanna bet!?"

Imaginary fire bloomed around Sakura "Yeah I wanna bet! And when I win you owe me an all-inclusive shopping spree!" Ino scoffed, looking as though she had won the lottery. With a flashy flick of the hair she turned her back to Sakura, looking over her shoulder with a look of utter superiority.

"And if I win, you have to give up on Sasuke."

Sakura narrowed her eyes "You're on!"

The second the proctor sliced his hand downwards Sakura found herself stumbling backward in shock as Hinata appeared in her face, foot swinging for her head. Sakura barely managed to duck under the limb and leap back to put some space between them. The pinkette took in a deep breath when she landed. What the hell?! If there was one thing Sakura hadn't expected it was for Hinata to fight seriously against her. Well if that was how the Hyuuga was going to go about this then Sakura wasn't about to disappoint.

Hinata charged and Sakura's brain moved at the speed of light for a new strategy, her last strategy had been based on Hinata would taking sympathy on her−because the Hyuuga had been there when the bet was made− and not fighting her seriously. Hinata was closing in and Sakura quickly punched the ground, shattering it to pieces and sending boulders hurtling into the air. Hinata was not hindered; her speed did not decrease as she skillfully leapt through the obstacles, jumping from boulder to boulder. Sakura threw a few explosive kunai but Hinata danced around them. Finally her brain came to a solution and Sakura pulled out a blue scroll that had intricate white designs lacing it and without a moment to spare she threw it in Hinata's direction then rushed through a few handsign's.

"Summoning jutsu: Snow Blizzard!" A torrent of Snow and wind burst free from the scroll and Sakura took great pride in the minuet widening of Hinata's eyes. Still Hinata did not slow down, instead she formed a coat of chakra around her body and tore through it, the snowy winds parting as she moved.

Sakura cut off her supply of chakra just as Hinata came within attacking distance of her, Hinata sent a punch that Sakura dodged by bending backwards but the Hyuuga had been expecting that and quickly switched to bringing her elbow down; Sakura crossed her arms to block the attack but the force of the impact slammed her into the ground, knocking the air out of her and creating a crater. Sakura barely had a second to breathe before she felt the cold tip of a kunai pressed to her neck.

"Do you surrender?"

Sakura bit her lip in frustration "I surrender."

The proctor announced Hinata the winner and cheers rang through the stadium. A hand appeared in Sakura's field of vision and she looked up with teary eyes to see Hinata smiling down at her. "I lost the bet." The pinkette sobbed.

"I don't think you did," Hinata said. Sakura was beyond confused but then Hinata pointed to a slash in the arm of her sweater where she had a small bleeding wound. "I wasn't fast enough in coating my arm." A smile bloomed on Sakura's face and she quickly wrapped her arms around Hinata who giggled.

"I landed a hit! I landed a hit!" the pinkette gushed.

"And you also lasted longer than Ino did against Mimiko. Now let's get off the field, we need to get you looked at before your next match."

Sakura nodded rapidly, her eyes sparkling "I can't wait to rub this in Ino's face!"

Gaara stood in the stands, arms crossed and looking as stoic as ever. The match between Hinata and Sakura hadn't been entertaining, the outcome obvious from the start. The match had ended only a few minutes ago and someone else had taken to the field but they didn't grab his attention and so he was mentally playing a game of shoji with Shukaku while he waited on Temari to return from the bathroom. She had left a long time ago which had him worried, yes, Gaara was worried, it was a new emotion that he was getting used to; he didn't like it because it made him feel uncomfortable.

Temari had been her usual self all morning and had been better after Kankuro got over his initial shock of seeing Gaara speak non-murderous language to Temari and apologized. She had left a few minutes ago to use the bathroom and had yet to return. Gaara turned to Kankuro who was watching the field and spoke "Kankuro is it normal for a woman to spend so long in the bathroom?"

Kankuro looked down at him and grinned "Gaara my dear little brother there is much us men do not know about the female genus, but if there is one thing we do know, it's that they spend forever in the bathroom, especially if they're doing their makeup."

Gaara blinked "Temari doesn't wear makeup, you do."

Kankuro glared, feeling a lot more confident now that he knew Gaara wasn't about to go psychotic murderer on his ass "It's not makeup its war paint."

Gaara cracked a tiny smile "Right."

Kankuro went back to watching the field and Gaara spent a few more seconds simply standing in place− not even registering the fact that the next two contestants, Mimiko and Shino, had just been called−then left to find his wayward sibling.

Temari stepped out of the bathroom feeling completely refreshed and ready to face her trials. The first trial had been getting Gaara to forgive her and the next was convincing Baki that neither she nor her siblings would be taking part in this war. She was the eldest and it was time she started behaving like it and that meant protecting her family, being a Shinobi didn't present many situations where she could keep them completely safe but this war was pointless and she didn't want to lose her family over a pointless war. She was sure Gaara would listen to her if she told him not to participate in the war, Gaara hated they're father and had only been doing as he asked because it was a great opportunity for murder but now that he came back to his senses−thank Kami−she was positive he would see her side as the better side.

The sound of cheers broke her from her thoughts and she cursed, damn she had missed the fight, she had really wanted to see the battle between the Hyuuga and the pinkette because she happened to have overheard the bet between Sakura and Ino and she was curious as to how strong Hinata could possibly be to topple the amazing strength the pinkette had shown. No offense to Hinata or anything but that Hyuuga looked too innocent to be a shinobi much less a strong one.

Deciding that she was spending way to long lost in her thoughts Temari started to make her way back to the arena, she hadn't taken more than two steps before a wave of killing intent had her whirling back around. Walking towards her was a boy, he was dressed from head to toe in black, he wore silver cuffs on his hands and shoeless feet and had a white Kitsune mask stuck to the side of his head. She could make out red hair but he was too far away for her to see his eyes.

Temari readied her fan, silently cursing herself for just realizing how eerily empty the hallway was "Who are you?" she asked, he had no visible signs of his allegiance.

"Yoroichi."

In all honesty Temari wasn't expecting him to answer, but she was expecting him to attack so when he leapt at her she gave one great swing of her fan. Whirlwinds of air let loose and in the narrow hallway there was no way to dodge. A sharp punch to her back had Temari flying through the air, she righted herself and looked up to see Yoroichi in front of her…but…but he was just behind her. Without much thought for strategy Temari swung her fan again and was this time met with a kick to the back of her head.

Vision blurry and thoughts bewildered Temari stumbled to her feet. There was no way he was fast enough to dodge her attack in the narrow encasement and she would've felt the shift in the air if that was so; no, he hadn't moved…he'd never been there in the first place, Genjutsu? Temari laced her hands together in a single sign.

"Kai!"

Nothing happened.

"If it was that easy to break I would not have used it," the voice came from directly beside her and Temari had only a second to think of how screwed she was before she felt something slice into her side, pain shot through her and she tried to jump back but found that she couldn't move. Looking down Temari saw pale hands rising up from the floor to hold her in place. Slash after slash was made on her body and Temari screamed herself hoarse, pain causing black spots to appear in her vision.

No! She wouldn't lose! If she couldn't even stop this fool then how did she expect to protect Gaara? But it hurt so much, she could barely think…no, she just had to break the genjutsu and then she would be in the clear.

"Kai…" Temari's voice was barely above a whisper and her hands were in so much pain that she couldn't even form the handsign, but she would break it, she would break it damn it!

Temari gathered her chakra "K-Kai…"

More!

"Kai…"

More!

"Kai!"

The world around her shattered and Temari, in an amazing show of resilience grabbed the arm that was about to slash her abdomen and swung Yoroichi in front of her. "I'll protect him," she whispered her pain sending her to a point of delirium. "I WON'T LOSE!" She took up her fan then gave it a massive swing, forgoing all handsigns and merely pumping it full of chakra. The winds that were let lose tore through the walls and slammed into Yoroichi.

The resounding explosion shook the stadium.

A few minutes before explosion:

Gaara walked at a slow pace through the halls, deciding he would give Temari a bit more time to finish whatever she was doing that took over half an hour to finish. He came to a halt when he reached the turnoff that lead to the bathrooms and froze−there was something wrong.

"Genjutsu," Shukaku said.

"Yes. Temari's in trouble."

Gaara held up an open palm to the hallway and pulled on Shukaku's chakra, the malicious chakra started to vibrate off him in waves, sending the few people who were curiously watching running away as fast as they could.

"Kai!"

The genjutsu shattered and Gaara was off, moving as fast as he could when Temari's blood assaulted his nose. A loud sonic boom followed by a strong force of wind sent him flying back a few paces but he quickly righted himself and picked up speed.

The sight that the young Jinchuuriki came upon had him stumbling to a stop "Temari?" Gaara said, looking at the body that lay in tatters and a slowly increasing pool of blood.

"Someone else was here but I can't smell them over the blood," Shukaku said, but Gaara didn't hear a word. The redhead delicately lifted up his sister, pulling her up in his arms, her blood soaking through his clothes.

"Temari, open your eyes." Gaara's voice was commanding, willing her to be alright but it wasn't working. "…please…Temari please open your eyes…"

Gaara wrapped his arms around her in a tight hold, Shukaku's chakra started to roll of him in waves, sand floating out his gourd "Temari…you said you had more stories to tell me about mother, you have to open your eyes."

"Kid…her heart isn't beating."

"…please open your eyes…"

"She isn't going to. I'm sorry."

"AHHHHHHHHH!"

A few minutes before explosion:

Hinata stepped out of the infirmary and started to make her way back to the arena, Sakura by her side. They were both patched up and ready to continue their matches, Sakura had yet to inform Ino of her winning of the bet but that was because she had been rushed to the infirmary after her match. The pinkette couldn't wait to see the look on the blonde's face.

"Sakura your excitement is palpable," Hinata said smiling light at her friend.

Sakura grinned "Yeah well I landed a hit! Do you know how hard it is to hurt you Hinata?"

Hinata laughed "Not that hard Sakura, Naruto and Sasuke do it all the time."

"Well they're superhuman…wait, they actually hit you?!" Hinata looked at Sakura as though she had lost her head and the pinkette hurried to rectify the matter. "I mean I know you guys do mock battles and stuff but…it's just that sometimes they treat you like porcelain so visualizing them actually hurting you is hard."

"You can't learn without practice Sakura and the best way to practice is through mock battles. I don't much mock battle with the boys, most are with my father and unlike them he never holds back…enough about this, I have something I need to tell you," Hinata's voice went from cheery to borderline depressive and Sakura wondered what could've have the Hyuuga in such a bad mood, it was probably something private and these halls were not private so Sakura grabbed her friends arm and tugged her towards the bathroom. "W-What are you doing?" Hinata asked.

"We have too many eyes and ears here, let's talk in the bathroom. There are a lot less people there during the matches."

"But we have to go back to−"

"I doubt it's time for your battle again. It's just a quick detour Hinata, I want to hear what you have to say without someone else hearing. Do you want someone else to overhear?" Hinata slowly shook her head and Sakura nodded. "Then we're going to the bathroom. We'll take in one of the stalls."

The hallway leading to the bathroom came in sight and Sakura took no more than three steps towards it before a loud sonic boom shook the arena, a large gale of wind blasted through the halls, sending both her and Hinata sliding back a few feet.

"What the hell was that?" Sakura asked once the winds died down. She looked across at Hinata who had turned her Byakugan on and waited, a few seconds of silence passed before Hinata visibly paled and then took off. Sakura quickly followed, wondering why they were going towards the potential danger instead of away from it.

A large wave of murderous intent had Sakura coming to a stop; fear stopping her from continuing along with Hinata, she didn't want to know who that was coming from. Hinata stopped when she realized Sakura wasn't continuing and hurried back to grab her friend. Hinata gave Sakura a strong shake "Sakura, I know your scared I am as well but you're a ninja and no matter how hard a mission seems you have to finish it right? Temari's hurt and we have to help her."

A few seconds passed before Sakura took in a shaky breath and nodded, she regretted it a second later when an inhumane roar echoed through the halls, it was loud and she wouldn't be surprised if the entire stadium heard. They came upon a sandstorm that was quickly expanding, tearing through the walls and the ceiling. The murderous aura was coming from inside it.

"Can you see inside Hinata?"

"I can't, there is chakra coating the sand, I can't see past it. We're going in."

"What?!" Sakura shouted "We should go get help! Did you not hear that shout?! Do you not see the approaching destruction?!"

Hinata rolled her eyes; she did not have time for this. She grabbed Sakura's hand and stretched her chakra to coat both of them before jumping into the sandstorm, her mind set on finding her friend and stopping the ensuing chaos.

Naruto smiled when Gaara came upon Temari's bloody mess, it was as though the gods were on his side, he didn't have to tell his clone to somehow get Gaara to go after Temari the redhead had done so himself. The ensuing sandstorm tore away at the seals he had Haku plant in the walls and so a few screens went blank. The blonde turned temporary redhead made a single handsign and immediately the memories of the clones he had sent with Zabuza, Haku and the Quadruplets came to him. The war was finally underway.

"Shinigami-sama how do you plan on stopping the sand Jinchuuriki?" asked Fuma another of Mizuki's 'gaurdian' kitsune's.

"I won't have to," Naruto said as he stood and checked over all his seals. "The berserker seal was broken so he won't go full Shukaku and I doubt Shukaku wants to take over anyways so right now Gaara's basically just throwing a tantrum. He'll calm down soon."

An explosion shook the room from the fights beginning up-top, Naruto looked back at the screens "What's the situation with the Hokage and Orochimaru?"

"They have engaged in combat."

Hiruzen wasn't wasting anytime with pointless conversation then, good.

"And Hinata?"

"We lost sight of her, she was heading towards the Suna Jinchuuriki but given the state of the seals we can't get a visual of her current situation."

Surprisingly Naruto didn't look ready to speed to her side, he knew what Hinata was capable of and if there was anyone who could calm Gaara down it was her. Hopefully Temari wasn't dead…well whatever, you couldn't have war without a little collateral damage.

"Continue to monitor the remaining screens and contact me when the sound four arrive."

"Hai Reaper-sama."

Sakura let loose a sigh of relief once they entered the eye of the sandstorm, but her relief was short-lived as she saw the bloody body on the floor and the redhead that was gripping said body tightly. Oh god wasn't that Gaara? The sand's Jinchuuriki? They were so dead.

"Neh, Hinata," Sakura whispered to the Hyuuga who stood next to her, Hinata was watching the scene with a sad gaze. "I don't think he's seen us yet so let's just go." Just as she said that another cry left Gaara's mouth and the sand seemed to pick up in speed and aggression.

To Sakura's horror−though really she should've known the Hyuuga wouldn't listen−Hinata walked over to the grieving redhead and placed a calming hand on his shoulder, almost immediately sand started to rip away at her hand, leaving it bloody and covered in scratches in seconds. Gaara didn't move from his position, nor did he even bother to look up, trapped in his sorrow. Sakura found it weird to see the boy who was so cold shattered in the face of his sister's death, the saying her mother always told her was never more true than at that moment 'To kill a monster you must first destroy that which holds its heart'.

"Gaara-san I need you to calm down. I can help." Hinata said

"She's dead!" Gaara snarled, his voice rough and guttural.

"I know. I can bring her back but if you don't calm down and allow me close enough to help her then in exactly two minutes she will be beyond saving."

"Go away."

Spikes of sand formed around Hinata, closing in on her and forcing her to back up from the redhead. Sakura gasped, she knew this was a bad idea.

"Leave."

"Hinata I think we should−"

Hinata glared at the pinkette effectively cutting off any further speech then went back to edging back as she tried to convince Gaara she could save his sisters life "Gaara please−"

"LEAVE!"

The spikes shot at Hinata but she leapt out of the way and continued to dodge the spikes "Um Hinata, I think we should go," Sakura said, the near panic in her voice drawing Hinata's attention to the rapidly decreasing space in calm of the storm. This would make it difficult to dodge his attacks. "Hinata you can't land!" Sakura's voice was filled with panic and Hinata looked down to see sand covering the floor and holding the pinkette in place. If she landed from her current leap into the air she would be stuck as well and unable to dodge the spikes coming at her.

An annoyed look flashed across her face before she flashed through a few handsign's and slammed her hands to the floor. "Lightening style: Dance of the Thunder God!"

A loud crack sounded as lightening jumped from under Hinata's hands, turning the sand on the ground and the spikes in the air to glass. Sakura cried out when the lightening shocked her, it was painful and she wondered why Hinata hadn't tried to control it, her answer came with a loud pained cough−the that had before been lifeless was breathing.

The storm stilled as Gaara looked down at his coughing sister in shock "Temari?" Gaara asked in question. The blonde didn't answer, instead she faded back into the realm of unconsciousness but Gaara didn't panic because he could hear the faint rhythmic beat of her heart.

"Are you going to allow me to help her now?" Hinata asked, a tinge of annoyance lining her voice.

Gaara nodded mutely and the Hyuuga quickly went to Temari's side; quick as any professional medi-nin Hinata had Temari's largest gashes reduced to non-life-threatening cuts and the smallest cuts reduced to tiny scars that would fade after time.

"That's the best I can do, we need to get her to the infirmary to have her bandaged and looked over for internal damage," Hinata said.

Sakura looked at her friend in newfound awe, the pinkette already had a high respect for her friend but seeing Hinata bring a person back to life made her even more amazing than she already was. The reason the lightening had harmed her was probably because Hinata had been so focused on adjusting the strength on Temari that she couldn't adjust the rest. The sand that had before been swirling around them slowly retreated into Gaara's gourd and Sakura let loose a sigh of relief, one that she immediately regretted when she saw what the walls of sand had been blocking out.

The sand had torn through the ceiling and the walls but that wasn't what caught Sakura's attention, it was the sound of explosions, cries of pain and scent of blood that seemed to vibrate all around her.

"What the hell is going on?"

Not as long as the usual but that was the perfect point to end it
