"Shawn?" The DX reunion was over. Now, Hunter found his husband in their shared locker room. The blond was stretched out on the couch with his baby blue eyes closed. "Talk to me, baby."
Shawn didn't even flinch. He took a slow, calculated breath. And then, without missing a beat, his eyes fluttered and his eyes met Hunter's. "What do you want me to say?"
A rush of relief washed over him when he heard Shawn's voice. "I want you to tell me what the matter is, baby."
Shawn's eyes fell closed once more. "Nothing. Nothing is the matter, Hunter."
Hunter frowned. It had been like this since before they had arrived at the arena for Raw. Shawn would barely talk to him, and when he would somehow force the blond to talk to him, all he would receive were short answers that were of no value whatsoever. Slowly, Hunter walked over to the side of the couch and kneeled down beside his baby. Shawn wouldn't even look at him. He continued to stare aimlessly at the row of lockers in front of him.
He honestly had no idea what he had done. He loved Shawn and all he wanted was for the blond to be happy and healthy. And, at that moment, it was clear that the blond was far from happy. Hunter reached out and took Shawn's hand. He didn't yank it back like Hunter had expected, but he also didn't return the sentiment. Hunter reached up and brushed the blond hair away from Shawn's face. Shawn's eyes flickered over to Hunter momentarily.
Finally, Hunter took hold of Shawn's chin and turned the blond's face so that he could look into his baby's eyes. "Do you want to go out to dinner after the show, Shawn?"
Shawn blinked slowly. "Sure. Whatever you want to do."
"Well, what do you want to eat?" Hunter went through several options, but Shawn didn't seem interested in any of them. "Do you even want to eat at all?"
Shawn shrugged. "Whatever you want to do." Shawn said once more. "I'm sure that whatever you decide on will be delicious." Shawn said wryly.
"No, I don't want to decide for you. I want you to make a decision." Hunter said, obviously annoyed. "Please, tell me what I did to piss you off so much. I love you, Shawn, and I want you to be happy."
Now, Shawn wouldn't even look at him. "Nothing is the matter."
Hunter frowned. "You know that I don't like it when you lie to me, Shawn."
Shawn frowned. "I'm not lying, Hunter. Nothing is the matter."
Hunter rolled his hazel eyes. What more could he do? If Shawn wanted to be a stubborn old mule, then more power to him. Hunter shot one last desperate look in Shawn's direction, but when he realized that Shawn wasn't about to return it, he sighed and gave up. When Shawn was ready to talk, the blond knew where to find him. Hunter soon relocated himself to his office, where he threw himself down into his swivel chair and sat silently.
What to do? What to do? Hunter never realized how obscenely quiet it was before without his energetic blond around to be the life of the party. Wow, he had only been away from Shawn for a matter of minutes and already he was all that he could think about. He really was whipped. He still had a little while before he had to head back down to the arena for his segment with Brock Lesnar about their match for SummerSlam, so he did some paperwork.
Until now, Hunter hadn't realized just how much work had been left to him ever since that bastard, John Laureinitis, had been fired. He had so much work left over that it wasn't even funny. And, since it was the brand new GM's first night on the job, he felt a certain obligation to do the left over work himself. He finished it in record time and took it down to the GM's office for their official signature.
When he arrived back at his office, he was rather surprised to find Chris Jericho, of all people, sitting in one of the plush leather armchairs that sat across from his desk. Hunter frowned and let out a soft moan. He really didn't want to deal with this now. Now, to be totally honest, he didn't have any problems with Chris. It was just that, after awhile, the man's holier-than-thou attitude started to grate on the nerves.
"What do you want, Jericho?" Hunter hissed out as he crashed down into his swivel chair. He was one painful bundle of tension and he was ready to take all of that out on Jericho. "Can't you see that I'm busy?"
"What's the matter with you? Did you forget your anniversary or something?" Chris joked. He was too busy chuckling to himself to notice that all of the color had drained out of Hunter's face.
"What did you just say?" Hunter asked frantically.
Chris stopped chuckling in time to wipe the tears from the corner of his eyes. "Did you forget your anniversary?"
"Shit! Shit, shit, shit!" Quickly, Hunter rebooted his computer and pulled up his calendar. It was just as he feared. Today was the fifteenth anniversary of the day that he had married Shawn. "Fuck! He's gonna kill me."
Chris watched as Hunter raced out of the room. Did he even realize that he still had a segment to do with Brock Lesnar? "It was only a joke, man."
But then, almost as frantic as Hunter had been when he left, Chris took out his wallet and took out a small reservation card for August 30th. It would mark his fifth anniversary with Phil Brooks. A rush of relief washed over him when he realized that he already had their anniversary accounted for and didn't have to worry about his premature death at the hands of an extremely pissed off Punk. At least, not today…

Hunter made a few calls. The first one had been to Vince McMahon, who had been liked a father to Hunter for many years. He had actually been the one to tell Hunter that he could either make a move on Shawn or he would lose him, because he wasn't the only one in the locker room who had eyes on the Heartbreak Kid. He had asked Vince to postpone the segment with Brock Lesnar. Vince had been hesitant, but eventually he had agreed.
Next, Hunter rushed back to the hotel. He knew that he didn't have much time before Shawn realized that Hunter wasn't coming back to the hotel room and decided to come back, so he needed to make the most of it. When he finally arrived at their room, he stormed inside and turned on all the lights. Quickly, a call to room service was made. He ordered the roasted chicken with all the trimmings, served with a bottle of the best wine they offered.
"How could I forget our fifteenth anniversary?" Hunter chastised himself out loud as he searched for candles. Shawn was obsessive about his candles. He carried them everywhere. But where the hell were they?
"Did you check in his suitcase?" A voice came from behind him. Hunter's heart leapt into his throat, before he realized that the voice was much-too feminine to be Shawn's. "Dad sent me to find you after he heard about you and Shawn."
"Stephanie! Thank God you're here. Shawn will be here any minute and I don't even have a gift for him… what's that?" Hunter eyed the small box in her hands.
"This? This would be the gift that you bought for Shawn last month and accidentally left at my house." Stephanie said.
"I did?" Hunter seemed terribly confused.
"Yeah." Stephanie smiled. "It must've cost you a fortune, but it was obviously worth it by the smile on your face."
Hunter took the box out of her hand and carefully opened it. It was a diamond studded cross that was almost identical to the one that Shawn used to wear down to the ring. It was set in pure rose gold (now Hunter understood what she meant by it costing him a fortune), which would reflect the soft tan of Shawn's skin beautifully. It was absolutely priceless and he knew that Shawn would love it dearly.
Hunter looked up, ready to thank Stephanie for helping him out in his moment of crisis, but when he did, the brunette McMahon had vanished. The only sign that she had been there at one time was the box in his hands. Hunter shook it off and carefully reset the lid on the box. He then walked over to Shawn's suitcase and opened it. Sure enough, the candles were exactly where Stephanie had said they would be.

Shawn came back to the hotel room about an hour later, totally dejected. It looked as if Hunter had totally forgotten. "I'm back…" he muttered softly. "Not like anyone cares."
"I care." Hunter announced as he came out of nowhere and stuffed a bouquet of fresh roses into Shawn's hands. "Happy Anniversary, baby. These are for you. There's more, too. But first, let's eat."
Shawn smelled the flowers. "These are beautiful, but…"
Hunter frowned. "But what, baby? Don't you like the flowers?"
Shawn shook his head. "Like I said, they're beautiful. I just… you didn't remember our anniversary all day, and then, all of a sudden, it comes to you out of the blue? That doesn't even make sense."
"Shawn, I'll admit that I was a bit stressed-out with all of the work that went into the 1000th episode. But that is no reason for me to forget you. I don't have an excuse for that and I'm sorry." Hunter said.
Shawn looked away. "Don't worry about it, Hunt. It's not a big issue."
"But it is a big issue. I can see how much this is hurting you and I want to make it better." Hunter said honestly. "Just give me a chance to show that I'm good for it."
Shawn looked him over seriously. "Okay. One chance. But that's all."
Hunter smiled, his confidence restored. "One chance is all I need, baby."
Hunter was the perfect gentleman at dinner. He had the entire table set up, from romantic candlelight to two servings of roasted chicken with all of the trimmings. The food was wonderfully delicious, and while Shawn was under no illusion that Hunter had cooked it all himself, it was more the thought that counted. Once dinner was over, the two moved over to the couch to exchange presents.
Shawn seemed a little hesitant at first. After all, what could Hunter have bought for him on such short notice? But then, Hunter pulled out the small box and told him that he had actually been keeping this for him for awhile. Shawn opened it up and was stunned speechless. The pendant was absolutely breathtaking. Still unable to do much more than stare at it, Hunter took it out and slid it onto the blond's neck. It looked even more beautiful on him.
Shawn leaned forward and kissed him softly. He then took out his own present and handed it to Hunter. Carefully, Hunter undid the wrapping and took it out. It was a solid white gold sledge hammer pendant with a broken heart on either end. Hunter knew that Shawn would have had to have had it custom made. He knew it was perfect for him when Shawn leaned forward and put it on him for the first time. This time, it was his turn to kiss Shawn.
"And I have one more surprise for you, baby." Hunter slid off of the couch and, taking his baby by the hand, led him into the bedroom. Inside, there were several candles all around and scented rose petals scattered all over the bed.
"You didn't." But Hunter could tell that Shawn was pleasantly surprised.
"I did." Hunter affirmed as he led Shawn over to the bed, gingerly taking his shirt off as they went. "Now, what do you say we make the most of the hour left of our anniversary?"
Shawn smirked. "I can't say no to that."
