Oh god, I am so very sorry! I had written this chapter about two weeks ago and had thought I'd uploaded up. And when it got not reviews I just thought it was a shitty chapter – thank you to the 'Guest' who left one which in turn alerted me to the fact that this chapter had been sitting in my Documents folder all this time. I hope you enjoy this chapter and I am once again so sorry about the mistake; if you can't remember what happened last chapter you can always skim read it to refresh your mind. "Mr Sebastian! Mr Sebastian!" Sebastian didn't really have the time or the patience to deal with their shit. And to be honest, he didn't really care about the brats anyway – they were twins, one girl and one boy, with gangly limbs and snotty noses. Sebastian hated children and he knew that in the future, his dislike for those annoying little creatures that dribbled and trod playdough into the carpet wouldn't change in the slightest. But he had an image to uphold, so he plastered on an overly exuberant smile that made his face hurt and turned to them "What's wrong?"
"We're hungry" The girl said, her finger lodged up her little nose. Yuck.
"Yeah, so?" Sebastian said; his stomach curled in disgust as the girl inspected her finger before wiping it on a nearby tent. Fucking brats. It wouldn't hurt to teach the little fuckers some manners and personal hygiene, too bad they lived in the 21st century where parenting methods had changed considerably. He didn't understand why schools didn't bring back the cane and whip some sense into them before they were unleashed into the general public.
"We have no food. We're hungry!" The boy said this time, looking up at him with large brown eyes that others would have thought were cute, instead he wanted to punch his stupid little face in. Sebastian shrugged and went back to polishing his stun gun. He was so very temped to shoot the little bastards and chuck them over the side as zombie food, but he highly doubted the mother would be happy with his views on getting rid of her persistent children.
"We're hungry!" The girl cried again. Another thing Sebastian hated about children. When they wanted something, they wanted it right this minute and didn't have any patience to wait, not to mention they didn't get the message when someone wanted to be alone for once.
"Yeah yeah yeah. I know" Sebastian mumbled "Everyone's hungry you little fuckers, go away and tell your sob story to someone who cares" He dropped the 'I actually care about your puny problems' disguise, because he was sleepy, annoyed and hungry as hell. Both children looked startled and clamped their hands to their faces which displayed various degrees of shock "Um! You said a naughty word" The boy chided. Sebastian snorted and mumbled under his breath.
"Mummy says that if you say a naughty word, you have to sit on the naughty step otherwise God will cry" The girl supplied, her high voice made Sebastian's food-deprived brain throb within his skull and he growled, pointing the stun gun in their general direction. The two cried out and scampered off, the little boy tripping over a tent line, scraping his knee against the concrete roof and drawing blood. Served him right. Sebastian tucked his gun away and gave a nod in Mike's direction as the Asian teen gave him a can of Ironbrew. It was lukewarm, but his gratefully guzzled the beverage down and wiped the excess from his lips with the back his hand.
Fuck. He was hungry.
He wasn't just a little peckish.
It actually felt like his internal organs were having a full blown war within his body. And he swore if he went another day without food his stomach was going to start eating itself.
It had been a week since those two twerps had turned up. Well, it had been three, but Hodge 'accidently' tripped off the edge of the roof. And now that he thought about it Sebastian didn't know much about the other two, just that one was dressed like a fireworks display and the other looked like some whiny emo kid. And upon thinking harder he remembered that the emo kid was called something like Alex, Anex, Alec or Andrex. It was most likely Alex or Alec, Anex wasn't a real name and Andrex was the name or a toilet paper brand. The last thing he remembered about them was that Fireworks was carrying a mace, and Andrex was holding something that looked like a crowbar. Those were two very usefull weapons and Sebastian stored that little tidbit of info into the 'Shit to remember' department somewhere within his brain for later.
Anyway, they were running out of resources, fast. Sebastian knew he was selfish, but it wasn't to the point he'd stash away all the food and keep it for himself; he made sure that each can, each loaf of bread and every packet of savoury crackers were evenly distributed between each person – and his slaves…err…his support team…handed these supplies out at exactly sunrise every morning. But now they only had one measly can of baked beans left. One can that was meant to feed everyone. And it wasn't a can of those super nice luxury ones. It's one of those dirt-cheap ones that tasted like shit beans floating in water vaguely flavoured like tomato.
Which brought him back to what was happening at the moment. He was sitting on the wall that surrounded the edge of the roof looking inwards and vaguely listening to the sounds of the undead moaning down behind him – it was somewhat comforting, in a twisted and macabre sort of way. Charley 'Chaz' Daniels -or as he liked to refer to him; Slave Number 1- sat beside him and did the math. He wasn't amazing at it, but he was the one who was in charge of the food management area and as he could do some long mathematical shit that was useful. He remembered Chaz stating that he got an A* on Maths A-Level.
"By my estimates, about 15 people will be dead within the next two-three days" Chaz said, looking up at Sebastian from his notepad, Sebastian hummed and finished off his Ironbrew "And that's not from the lack of food, but from the lack of nourishment" Chaz continued in an even tone of voice "It's all well and good living on long-life food products, but we need fresh food such as beetroot and spinach to increase the amount of vitamins needed to maintain a healthy body"
Sebastian cared neither for spinach or beetroot. None of that healthy shit for him; he liked one bloody steaks and oven cooked chips with a healthy serving of fattening ketchup on the side. But he'd rather tuck into rabbit food in order to stay in fighting form "So, how are we going to get this stuff? Not to mention most fresh food would be inedible by now"
"Not entirely" Chaz said, he gave a grin and flashed his silver and blue braces "Due to the amount of undead within the shopping centre we haven't been able to investigate inside, and if you go to the more secluded part of the rooftop you can hear a distant 'whirr', which I believe is the sound of a functioning freezer. There's a high probability that there are frozen foods in this freezers that we can take up to the roof" He said "Not to mention that the Boot's stores are pretty much everywhere in England, and there might be one down there where we can get some antiseptic and bandages in case of any future injuries; and they have multivitamins we can distribute around"
Chaz; ever the logical one. Sebastian leant forward and observed the pale, tired people who wandered around the rooftop with almost robotic movements, his eyes were then drawn to the little cluster of tents away from the main group, and he could distantly see a group of people sat on some fold-out chairs – he could see Clary's flaming red hair and he grinned. Clary, god she was gorgeous. He shook his head and forced himself back on track "So, we somehow need to get past those undead unscathed, locate this freezer and take the food up here, before raiding the first aid kits and returning back to camp?"
"Yes" Chaz said. Straight to the point, not frills attached. Another reason why Chaz was in Sebastian's good books. He didn't like people who babbled and sugarcoated.
"There's a low chance that we will be able to make it out alive. Is there another method we can use?"
"No. But if I remember correctly you told me that Hodge said to you that they were attracted to noise. If we have the people" He gestured to the people milling around the camp "Collect on the opposite end to the freezer and make a hell of a lot of noise, we can use that time of distraction to get in there and out. And judging by the attention span of an undead, we have roughly 30 minutes to an hour to do so. However, there's the problem with opening the locked doors, we need some sort of door opener"
Sebastian whistled "Geeze, that's not much time. But we need the food" He nibbled on his nails thoughtful before snapping his fingers in Chaz's face – the other man wasn't fazed in the slightest "Can you go fetch Mike, Elliot and Mandy for me; they're the strongest in this camp and they'll be the people best suited to going down and getting the food" Chaz nodded, and wrote their names down in his notebook before looking up "That doesn't solve the issue about opening the door? And when are we going to carry out this operation?"
"Tomorrow" Sebastian "Mid-day tomorrow we'll do it, therefore I wish to meet up with those three tonight in order to make some sort of game plan. And don't worry about the door issue, I know something to sort that out. As well as Mike, Elliot and Mandy – can you also bring Fireworks and Andrex?"
Chaz paused, a look of confusion on his face "Fireworks? Andrex? Why would you need fireworks and toilet paper?"
"No silly" Sebastian said "Fireworks and Andrex. You know, those two who turned up last week; the emo looking one and the sparkly one?"
"Ah yes. Magnus Bane and Alexander Lightwood" Chaz clarified, writing down their names. How he remembered them Sebastian didn't know "If you don't mind me asking, why do you need those two?" Sebastian just laughed and tapped his noise, Chaz nodded tightly and stood, brushing the back of his jeans before heading off to fetch the people needed. Sebastian, meanwhile, entered his roomy tent and cleared some of his stuff away to make a little seating area for the meeting; he was very much looking forward to meeting Magnus and Alec, the two secretive guys. Sebastian had a hunch they were hiding something from him, and he hated secrets being kept from him.
.
"Jesus!"
"I highly doubt Jesus would be shopping down there"
"Shut up GeekSquad! Look! Look! Holy fuck! What the heck!"
"Firstly. I have a name, and that is Simon. Secondly, that's Annie" Simon said, leaning against the wall that surrounded the edge of the roof and looking down at the said person. Magnus, who was standing next to him with an expression of shock as 'Annie' did another high jump. Jace and Isabelle wandered over and joined them, peering down at her. Alec, if Simon remembered correctly, had said he felt ill so he was resting in the tent – he did look a little flushed and clammy this morning, maybe it was the flu.
"That kinda confuses me even more" Magnus exclaimed "Who the heck is Annie?"
"She's kind of famous around here" Clary said "She was up here with us, a lovely girl, she was determined to get into the 2016 Olympics as a highjumper and was always practicing on the roof. The kids loved her, they'd always sit and watch her for hours, clapping when she did some gymnastics tricks and stuff…" Clary trailed off and Magnus glanced over at her "But…?" He prompted.
"It was awful" Jace joined in, the sad tone in his voice was strange since Magnus always thought of him as quite a cheerful person, well, when he wasn't being a complete jackass "She was practicing one day, I think she was doing a backflip, and there was a little boy who was sat watching her too close and she collided with him. He broke his leg under the impact but she tripped over him and went straight over the side"
"Over the side…?" Magnus questioned.
Simon swallowed thickly and gestured down to the ground where a few undead were milling around. Annie, the zombified highjumper, clapped her hands twice before doing a little run, a look of determination on her rotting face. She paused abruptly and jumped. Magnus squealed and leapt backwards, away from the edge. She could jump high. And Magnus could have sworn she shot him a look of hunger before plummeting back to the pavement; her legs buckled and she collided with the floor. And then, almost as if she hadn't just fallen to the ground, she got back up and walked away where she did the same thing again. Clap hands. Run. Jump. Fall. It was like an endless cycle.
"We tried to save her" Simon said in a meek voice "We really did, tons of us went down and tried to pull all the zombies off her but she'd been bitten on the side of the face, and she begged us to leave her down there. The others had been attracted by all the noise so we had to retreat and leave her" Simon shook his head and looked away "Come on, let's talk about more cheerful things" Jace interrupted "There's no use getting all emo; we already have Alec to fulfil that role"
Isabelle laughed, but stopped suddenly making the others follow where she was looking.
"Magnus Bane and Alexander Lightwood?" A clear, bell like voice rang out. Magnus gave the newcomer a once over. He didn't look like a threat; he was quite short and looked to be around 15, he was also very pale with a face full of freckles and had a head of blonde hair neatly parted to the side. He somewhat reminded Magnus of a teenage Hodge, which freaked him out immensely.
"What do you want?" Magnus asked, rather bluntly. But the younger teen seemed unaffected by the tone of voice and glanced around, presumably for Alec "He's…ill" Magnus said, pursing his lips – he didn't like where this conversation was going, mind you, Magnus had always been a cautious person and something was telling him that this little mini-Hodge had something to do with Sebastian.
"Ah…" Mini-Hodge said, he wrote something down on a notepad before looking back at Magnus "No worries, I can alert Sebastian. Anyhow…speaking of which, Sebastian wishes to talk to you" He paused; Magnus guessed for effect "Now"
"No" Magnus answered immediately. Not only did he have an extreme hatred for that god awful excuse for a man, but Alec was practically lying comatose in the tent. He hated having the hide everything from the others when they'd been nothing but nice to him; he after claiming that Alec had the 'Lurgies' and that it was 'Contagious', they'd so far stayed clear of the tent and been oblivious to the angry red rash on their friends neck hidden under the bandage. And as much as he hated to do so Magnus had used a length of bandage to cover Alec's eyes, he always seemed to go into crazy-mode whenever he saw someone and Magnus had an idea that the darkness might lull him to sleep.
"I'm afraid you have no choice" Mini-Hodge said "You are aware that we are running out of supplies and we need your expertise to join us and collect some food. Two children have already died from famine and by my guesstimates, another 15 people will join those soon if they don't get something healthy down them"
The others looked shocked, Magnus didn't know if it was because of the statistics or the fact that Sebastian was worried about the health of the shopping centre residents. And to be honest the sparkly teenager wasn't sure which one of the two shocked him the most "Okay" He said slowly, he himself was famished and he didn't want to see any more innocent citizens die. Lest not forgot that the weirdo Sebastian had that Stun-Gun and clearly wasn't afraid to use it.
Mini-Hodge was all smiles, he looked considerably younger when he smiled, Magnus realised "Just let me tell Alec know I'm heading off" He said, and left the others behind him to unzip his tent and crawled inside. Alec was lying in the same place where he left him, bandage firmly in place over his eyes and blue veins standing out ghoulishly against his skin.
"Magnus?" Alec asked, voice quiet "My neck itches"
"Don't itch it. Just get some sleep and the phase will pass" Magnus said, he found what he was searching for and wedged the mace and crowbar under Alec's arms; Alec's eyebrows furrowed in confusion "Look after these for me, okay? I'm just going off for a minute and I'll be back – But don't let anyone touch those" Alec nodded shakily, inhaling sharply as the movement caused the bandage to rub against his sore neck. Magnus rubbed his shoulder soothingly before exiting the tent, worry overcoming him; he doubted Alec would have an episode if he stayed in the tent, but as a precaution he used some thin rope to tie the zip to the bottom of the tent and therefore making it harder for someone to get inside.
"Alec said he doesn't want to be disturbed" He said, and the others nodded sympathetically; they didn't know the half of it.
Magnus couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of dread as he followed the blonde guy towards Sebastian's tent where there was already a little crowd gathering. He had a feeling that everything was going to go so very wrong very quickly.
