After the tensest night Monroe had spent in a while, Reid finally left. Monroe settled Katie in the bed and went back down to wait for Holly to get home. With the incident with the Reapers, then Reid and Kelly, and to a lesser extent, Farley showing up out of the blue, he felt like he couldn't rest until his pack was back under his roof. He sat at his workbench, tinkering with a watch. He didn't know what to think. Katie seemed to really believe that the man in their house tonight was her father but Monroe couldn't help but be suspicious. Why had they shown up now? And did they bring the reapers with them?
He laid the watch down and called Hap. He wasn't sure how he would manage, but he didn't intend on letting even one member of his family be unprotected until things were settled. Oma was headed down to help with Katie, something Katie was going to hate, but he wanted to be sure that he could call Hap if he needed to go out with Nick. Or if Nick couldn't go out.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he heard a car pull up in front of the house. He looked out the window to see Holly jump out of the car, but then lean to say goodbye to her friends. He resisted the urge to go and hurry her along. He was anxious to have her in the house but he didn't want to embarrass her.
When Holly came in the front door she stopped short, sniffing, then fanging out. He knew she could still smell Reid in the house.
"It's okay, Hols. Mom just had a.., visitor stop by," he said, walking towards her.
"Oh, okay," she said, relaxing and shifting back. She stashed her clarinet beside the front door, next to her backpack. "Listen, Dad, so, after school Friday, Jillian is having a party. Her parents will be home and I'll be back first thing Saturday morning. So can I go?"
Monroe hesitated, "I don't think so, Holly," he said, regretfully. "With everything that's happened with Mom, and then Nick and Juliette, I'd just rather you go to school and come straight back home for a few days, just until things are straightened out."
"But, Dad..,"
"No," he interrupted. "Micah can come over here Saturday, but I want you home as much as possible. Do you understand?"
Holly gave a huff of frustration and agreed. "Okay. I'll stay at home."
"Thanks. Now are you hungry?" He asked, moving toward the kitchen.
"No, Jill and I stopped for burgers on the way home. I think I'll go up and talk to Mom, call Micah, and then go to bed." She ran up the stairs.
After Monroe finished his work and locked up, he headed upstairs to find Katie lying in bed watching a movie on her laptop. He smiled softly. She had already been on bed rest twice this pregnancy, once for a week and then again for three weeks. He knew it drove her crazy to be stuck in bed.
He lay down beside her and held her. "Hey, at least you know it can't last longer than six weeks."
"It's been one day and I'm already breaking out the movies. Six weeks is not a very comforting thought. Holly isn't happy with you."
"As long as she listens, she can be as unhappy as she wants," he replied, moving her screen so he could see what she was watching. "Why Rocky?"
"I like Rocky."
"I like it too, but why do you always watch Rocky when you are upset?" He asked, wrapping his arms around her.
"I don't."
"You do too," he insisted. "Nick too. When Juliette first turned him down, you two spent all weekend watching the movies."
"Sorry, I'll turn it off," she snapped.
"I wasn't making fun of you. I was just curious," Monroe replied.
"When our parents died, or I guess didn't die, or whatever happened, happened, I started having nightmares and couldn't sleep. I guess Nick couldn't either because he would always be up. Uncle Farley had left the movies over at Aunt Marie's and we started watching them when we couldn't sleep. Night after night, eventually I got to where I could sleep. So whenever I would have a nightmare, or couldn't sleep, Nick would put on one of the movies and I would fall asleep."
"That makes sense."
"It makes sense that Rocky was our security blanket?" she laughed.
Monroe shook his head. "No, you are totally weird. I was just being nice."
Katie laughed and elbowed him gently in the ribs. Then she turned serious. "I wasn't watching Rocky. I just wanted you to think that." She flipped to another program.
It was a shaky home video. Monroe instantly recognized a much younger Nick. He had the same black hair and fidgety way. He had calmed down a lot in the last year, but 9 year old Nick was just as hyper and jittery as 29 year old Nick had been.
"Dad, just throw the ball," Nick's tinny voice play from the speakers. Reid was standing a few feet from him with a baseball glove.
Monroe paused the movie. "Where did you get this?"
"Juliette found the tapes in Nick's attic a few years ago and had them put on DVDs for us," Katie replied innocently.
"And where were the DVDs tonight?"
"In the top of the closet," she said, sheepishly.
"So, my pregnant wife, who should be on bed rest, climbed on a chair to get some DVDs off the top shelf of the closet," he said.
She nodded. "See why I wanted you to think I was watching Rocky?"
Monroe started to read her the riot act, but after all she had been through that night and the fact that she didn't seem to be hurt, he let it go. "Just making sure I had all the facts." He hit play.
After a few minutes of Nick not hitting the ball, a little girl with wild black curls wandered in the screen.
"My ball, Daddy!" 3 year old Katie raised her hands up. "My ball."
Monroe smiled. "Look at you. You're adorable. And possessive."
"I was pretty cute, wasn't I?" she smiled. "I wonder what these two will be like?" She rubbed her stomach.
"They'll be absolutely perfect," Monroe said, putting his hand over hers. "Now, let's get some rest while we can." He took the computer, and then snuggled her up in his arms.
"Eddie. I love you," she said. "I don't care what my parents might say. You're perfect and I'm never leaving you."
"Back at you," he said, kissing her head.
