Setting Things Right

"You're not going to find anything in there."

Jack glances up from the book he'd been perusing to fix her with a challenging stare. "Oh yeah?"

"Yeah."

"How can we be sure unless we check?"

A shrug. "Suit yourself. Look. But there's nothing to explain the energy burst this morning in that book. Trust me."

"This has happened before then? I take it since you know there's nothing in this book that you also know what the heck is going on."

Silence.

"Allison. Tell me. I need to know."

Her lips form a thin line. She crosses her arms over her chest. "Henry," she begins.

"Aha! I know he did it!"

"No, Henry was the one to fix it last time."

His book forgotten, Jack stands and walks over to her. He stares deep into her eyes. "Why didn't you tell me this earlier?"

She sighs - he's won, again - and offers him a half-hearted shrug. "It was fun to see you squirm."

He ignores her. "Right. So we head over to Henry's and talk to him about it then," he settles on. "He can set things right." His expression changes to a confused one when he notices the look on her face. "What?"

"It was a problem with a power line," she says flatly. "One of the poles was damaged and the burst of electricity was the result of that."

"A fallen power line did this? That's all it was?" He frowns. "Oh. I get it. I'm the new guy. This is some kind of phasing period."

He scratches the bridge of his nose with one finger. He watches Allison curiously, studies her.

She returns his look with a careful but telling, 'What can I say? You caught us,' stare. "Welcome to Eureka, Carter."

He raises an eyebrow. "For real?"

Paying no attention to the sarcasm lacing his words, she smiles softly. "For real."
