The Big Book of Turtle Stuff

~April's POV~

The turtles managed to make a bon fire. The sun had dipped below the horizon and a blanket of stars covered the night sky. April sat cross-legged next to her friends around the bon fire. She couldn't remember the last time she had felt so content, so at peace with the world. She smiled as her friends laughed and joked around her, roasting marshmallows in the fire. April took a bite of her marshmallow and closed her eyes, letting the delicious flavour drown her tastebuds. It was a beautiful night and she was with the people she loved most in the world. April couldn't have asked for a more perfect moment.

Tipping her head back to look at the stars, April sighed in contentment.

"Oh, oh, we need to tell scary stories!" Mikey suddenly exclaimed, bouncing up and down on the spot like a small child on Christmas morning.

Raphael rolled his eyes. "Seriously, Mikey? Aren't we a little too old for that?"

"No way," Mikey said, shaking his head enthusiastically, "it's like a camping tradition!"

"Mikey, this is the first time we've ever been camping," Don pointed out.

"So," Mikey pouted. "It's on all the movie and stuff."

"I don't think it's a good idea," Raphael spoke up. "We all have to share a tent tonight and I don't want to be kept awake because you have nightmare."

"I don't have nightmares!" Mikey exclaimed indignantly. "I am made of steel when it comes to horror!"

"Mikey, you got scared in Gremlins and demanded to sleep in my room with me," Leo said, raising an eye-ridge.

"That was ages ago though," Mikey huffed.

"Dude, it was last week."

"…Shut up."

April rolled her eyes and took another bite of her marshmallow. Suddenly, Mikey sat up straight, his baby blue eyes wide with fear.

"Did anyone else hear that?" Mikey asked, looking around wildly.

"Hear what, Mikey?" Leo asked.

"A rustling in the woods," Mikey whispered. "It's coming from over there."

Leo listened quietly for a moment. "I don't hear anything, Mikey."

"No, I did, I swear I did," Mikey protested. "There's something watching us. I can see the trees moving!"

"That's because of the wind, doofus," Raphael growled.

"Maybe it's a bear," Mikey gasped. "Or some freaky guy in a mask!"

"Mikey, calm down, it's just your imagination. There's nothing there," Don said, trying to calm down his brother.

April looked at Mikey with knowing sympathy. "It's natural to think that, Mikey," April said gently. "On a dark night like this in the middle of the woods, it can make your mind believe things that aren't true."

"Oh," Mikey said sheepishly. "My bad guys."

"Mikey, don't touch my foot," Raphael growled.

"I didn't touch your foot," Mikey said.

"You did it again! Will you stop it already?" Raph yelled.

"Dude, seriously, I'm not touching your foot," Mikey insisted.

Raphael looked down and his heart froze in his chest. A large furry spider was crawling across his foot.

"Argh! Get it off, get it off, get it off!" Raphael screamed, leaping to his feet and shaking his foot wildly, trying to get the spider off his skin.

"Dude, you should have seen your face!" Mikey laughed, slapping his knee in mirth.

"I hate bugs!" Raphael screamed, constantly surveying his surroundings for any more signs of accursed bugs.

"It's the great outdoors, Raph," April grinned. "This place will be crawling with bugs."

April saw Raphael visibly pale.

"Don't worry though," she quickly assured him, "they can't get inside your tent."

"Good," Raphael mumbled. "It's getting late, we should turn in."

Leo tried to hide his smile. "Raph's right, it is getting a little late."

"Mikey, your marshmallow's on fire," Don pointed out suddenly.

Mikey gasped and hurled his marshmallow stick away from the bon fire.

"I can't believe you burnt down the tent!"

"I said I was sorry, Raph."

"Sorry isn't going to bring our tent back!"

"Dude, it was an honest mistake."

"Mikey, you could have thrown the burning stick away from our tent," Don pointed out.

"I wasn't thinking at the time," Mikey defended himself. "Besides, what better way than to experience camping than sleeping out in the open?"

"Oh gee, I don't know, Mikey, maybe in a warm sleeping bag in a tent and not surrounded by bugs!"

"I think April packed spare blankets if you're cold," Mikey mumbled, crawling over to their supply bags. Digging through one of the bags, Mikey's hands brushed against something hard. Mikey frowned and pulled out a hardcover book.

Squinting in the darkness, Mikey tried to make out the front cover.

"Whoa, dudes, check this out!" Mikey exclaimed. "April has a book on turtles!"

"Why would April have a book on turtles?" Don frowned, taking the book from Mikey.

"Dude, maybe she's studying us!"

"April wouldn't do that," Leo said, dismissing the idea. "I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation."

"To what?" April asked, sticking her head out of her tent to see what all the fuss was about.

"Mikey found this book on turtles in your bag," Don explained. "He thinks your studying us."

April was glad it was dark so no one could see the furious blush that tinted her cheeks.

"What? No! That would be totally creepy," April laughed. "It's an old book of mine I had for when I did biology at collage. I must have put that book in my bag by mistake."

"See, Mikey, told you," Leo said.

"Here, let me take that," April said, crawling out of her tent.

"What do you want it for?" Raphael asked.

"I don't need this old book anymore, figured we could use the paper for kindling," April shrugged.

Walking over to the remains of the bon fire, April made sure the turtles weren't looking before she quickly tossed the book into the trees.

She had come to realise that the guys were more human than turtle, and she didn't need a silly book to learn more about them. She had already learnt that they were sweet, smart, funny guys who meant the world to her. And no stupid book could ever tell her how much they meant to April.
