With a gust of loud, crass breath blown from puckered lips, Fionna attempted repeatedly to remove her blond bangs from her eyes. She was failing miserably. She took a deep inhalation and tried again. Still nothing. She gave a deep sigh and gave up, wearing a comical grimace framed by long grass cropping up around her lazily sprawled out form.
"Maaaaarshaaaaaalllll Leeeeee..." she said, pronouncing his name in full. She loved saying his name in silly ways.
The dark haired boy turned his head. He was sitting up with an umbrella shielding his sun-sensitive grayish skin.
"What?"
"Marrrsh."
"...What?"
"Marshbutts. Marshie. Marshmellow. Marshbadibbles-"
"Fionna, what the stuff do you want already?" the vampire finally snapped. There was an awkward silence.
"My hair's all in my face." Fionna mumbled.
Marshal Lee gave a snort.
"So move it."
Fionna made a disgruntled noise.
"Don't wanna move my arms. Move it for me, Marshed Pardardarz."
"...Just call me Marshall Lee. Or even frickin' Marsh..." he snapped his eyes directly toward Fionna's, appearing genuinely bewildered
"Why the frick don't you just do it?"
Fionna shrugged. Marshall Lee just rolled his eyes and leaned over, careful to keep the shadows over his hand.
His fingers extended slowly and touched the thick blond waves. They were soft, silky and looked like wheat swaying in the breeze. He swept the locks aside gently, leaving her perpetually energetic blue eyes unobscured. It occured to the lanky youth that she was pretty.
"Marshkovitz?" she asked with a note of confusion.
"Hm?"
"...You can stop touchin' my face now, dude."
Marshall Lee withdrew his hand immediately and turned away. He was blushing a bit. Fionna was too.
"Uh, my bad."
"Naw, it's cool..."
Another of their seemingly more frequent awkward silences dominated the air punctuated by the far off lecturing from Cake to one of the unfortunate souls who'd managed to invoke her less fluffy side.
The cat was really giving her adversary a serious butt-kicking. The sound of a smack, a yelp and a sassy "Mmmhmm, honey!" echoed before peace regained its shaky hold on the mishapen fields.
Fionna and Marshall Lee locked eyes and burst out laughing.
