A Great Mother
A/N: This was inspired by the episode where Mels (River Song) goes back in time and and lives out her childhood alongside her parents, Amy and Rory. A short, sweet little mother-daughter fic that, wherever she is, I hope my own mother can read. This one's for her. :)
Also, in case you've been living under a rock since the late 90s, the song Mels sings is Mama, by the Spice Girls.
Amy sighed, blowing a copper coil of hair away from her face. "This is absolutely ridiculous," she mumbled. She looked at the little doll in her hands, with complete puzzlement in her expression. How was this supposed to prepare her for eventual motherhood? Why did she even need to start thinking about that, over a decade before it was even a possibility?
She glanced over at her best friend, Mels, who was turning the little blue box toy in her hands. Mels seemed pensive and quiet today, which was a bit unusual - but Amy continued rambling.
"Why do we need to do this stupid project?"
"Oh, just do it for the marks," Mels sighed.
"And who says we all want to be mothers? That is such a stereotypical thing to peg to a girl. What if I don't want to be a mother?"
Mels' eyes widened, and she looked at Amy. "You surely don't mean that, do you?" she asked.
Amy sighed. "I don't know, Mels. I mean, it's not that I don't like children, but... what if... what if I want something bigger for myself? What if I want to travel the world? What if I want to go out and see every star, every galaxy? What if I want to live a life of adventure instead?"
"Like I said, Amy," Mels said, placing a hand on her friend's shoulder. "Just do it for the marks. Don't make a fuss over something so silly."
Amy nodded. "I just... I just don't see myself as the motherly type, you know? Me, with a child? I wouldn't know the first thing about how to take care of one!"
Mels smirked. "Yeah, I can't see it, either. How will cool, composed Amy Pond react when her child sings some cheesy mother-child ballad to her on Mother's Day?" Her smirk widened as she slowly began to hum, singing softly. "Every other day I crossed the line, I didn't mean to be so bad. I never thought you would become the friend I never had."
Amy laughed, lightly punching her best friend on the shoulder, shaking her head.
"So now, I see through your eyes. All that you did was love. Mama, I love you. Mama, I care," Mels continued, carrying on with the song, adding in some theatrics to the performance, which made Amy laugh more. Finally, she stopped, sighing, taking a moment to look at her friend. She reached over, brushing a strand of the redhead's hair behind her ear. The moment lingered between them for a little while, as Mels allowed herself a few moments to admire her best friend - and her future mother. She smiled.
"What is it?" Amy finally asked, looking a bit confused. "What are you thinking?"
Mels sighed, the smile not fading from her lips. "I think," she began, pausing for a bit before continuing, "that, despite your adventurer spirit - or, maybe, because of it - you will one day make a great mother, Amy Pond."
