Sail Into My Heart
Chapter 17 – A New Beginning
*BEEP*BEEP*BEEP*BEEP*
I turned off the alarm clock, and sat up in bed. It was 2 am and our flight leaves at 6. There was no point of the alarm clock really, as I didn't sleep a wink that night. I kept thinking about Roxel, and the move to Australia, I couldn't contain my excitement, but the thought of leaving my family behind dampened my high spirits. We went out for dinner last night and had goodbye drinks, I teared up a couple of times, but after seeing my family laughing with bellies full of food, the tears soon disappeared.
Axel groaned, "Do we have to get up Roxy? Couldn't we have just booked our flight later in the day?" I smiled at Axel, who turned around to face me, but with his eyes still shut.
"Yes, and anyway you booked the flight, it was your choice!" I pointed out, Axel groaned once more but sat up this time, and hugged me tight.
"We're moving to Australia today, Rox. Think about the amazing things we're going to see, and the spectacular opportunities that we're going to grab hold of."
"I know. I can't wait." I lied; obviously I was looking forward to moving, but the thought of probably never seeing my family again plagued my mind. However, Axel could see through my lies, he always could.
"Roxas, we will see them again, don't you worry your gorgeous little head about it, and anyway we need to get up if we want to catch that flight!" Axel stood up eagerly. I chuckled at his sudden urge to move, despite being a heavy-sleeper. Gradually, I stood up and told Axel that I was going to have a shower. That was the longest shower that I have ever had, I let a few tears out while I washed my hair. Axel told me that I was in there for over 40 minutes, and told me that we only 20 minutes until we could leave.
"What? We've got 20 fucking minutes to get ready and leave? Why didn't you tell me to get out of the shower?!"
"I didn't want to disturb you, besides we're going on two long flights without the chance to clean ourselves properly, so I thought the longer the better."
"Urgh, never mind." I brushed off my frustration, got dressed and packed my flight back as quick as I could.
"Hey you guys ready to go?" Terra asked, poking his head through the slightly open door.
"Urm, I think so. Axel you ready?"
"Yup, I'm ready!" I picked up my suitcase and flight bag, only for it to be taken from me by Axel.
"A gentleman will treat his other half as best as he can, even if it means just holding their suitcase for them." Axel winked. I smiled, but felt guilty about Axel having to carry his own suitcase, as well as mine and my flight bag.
"Axel, you're carrying too much stuff, at least give me my flight bag." I tried to take my bag, but Axel continued to insist that he carry it.
"Oh, for crying out loud you two! Just give me the fucking bag!" Terra snapped, grabbing the bag.
"How many times have I told you Terra, don't swear or your nose will grow." I reminded him, Terra scoffed.
"Gramps, that's from Pinocchio and his nose would only grow because he'd lie."
"Eh, same thing. And don't get clever with me young man, you may be in your thirties, but I'm still you're granddad, try to be clever or swear in front of me again, and they'll be problems."
"Alright, Gramps." I smiled and ruffled his already messy hair. A tired Aqua and Kairi walked down the stairs, "Why are you two awake?" I asked confused.
"You didn't think we'd let you go without saying goodbye would you?" Aqua smiled, I returned the sweet gesture.
"Anyways, shouldn't we be going?" Axel reminded us all, we all nodded and walked out into the cold night air. I breathed in the sweet smell, and looked back to the house that I had lived in for most of my life. I refused to let myself cry, as this was a new beginning. This was meant to be a happy time, not a depressing time. Axel and Terra put the suitcases into the boot, while Aqua, Kairi and I said our goodbyes.
"I'm gonna miss you Rox, you were always there for me, and I'm going to miss you so m-much." Aqua burst out into tears, I hugged her tight and kissed her cheek.
"I'm going to miss you too, I was so happy when Terra told me he'd met someone, and I was elated when I found out it was you. You're a lovely person Aqua, you're an amazing wife to Terra and a spectacular mother. Oh, and have you told him yet?"
Aqua smiled through her tears, "what that I'm pregnant? No, not yet. He's going to be really sad when you go, so I thought that I'd cheer him up with the news later today, it will be something to look forward too."
"I expect so." I smiled, I felt a slight tugging at my chequered jumper, it was Kairi and she wanted a special goodbye herself. I kneeled down to her height and gave her a hug.
"You be good girl for your mummy, she's going to need a lot of help from you soon."
"I w-will. Will you forget me, Grandpa?" I stared at her sadly, shocked that she'd think of such a thing.
"Kairi, don't you ever, ever think that. I know I'm moving far away, and I wish it was closer. I'll never forget such a lovely little girl like you, I mean, who could forget that smile. Can you show me it?"
Kairi eventually smiled, "That's my girl, just remember to smile, and I'll never forget you. I love you Kairi."
"I love you too Grandpa." I hugged her tighter, before slowly letting go and standing up.
"Goodbye Roxas." Aqua smiled.
"Goodbye Aqua." I walked to the car and got in it. Terra was telling me that Roxel would meet Axel and I at the terminal. I gulped at the news, I was hoping that the traffic on the motorway would be tremendous so that I'd be able to avoid saying goodbye, but the there was no traffic, and we were only minutes away from the airport.
"Here we are." Terra announced, stopping at the drop off. We all got out of the car and got our suitcases. This was time for my goodbye to Terra; I stood awkwardly, taking the suitcases from him.
"Be good Terra, especially to Aqua and Kairi, they're both credits to this family. I'll miss you Terra, and don't work yourself out, you deserve to live your life while you can. Take a few days of work, spend every second with Kairi and have some time to yourself. Look after your dad; you know what he's like. Oh, and be sure to help Aqua out, she's going to need a lot of it soon." I hugged Terra tight, giving his hair a final ruffle.
Terra smiled, but frowned shortly afterwards. "What do you mean by that?"
"You'll find out later." I smirked and winked, I stepped back, allowing Axel to give his farewell.
"Goodbye Terra, I know we've only met, but I can tell that you're a great person, and I wish you well." Axel and Terra shook hands, leaving their goodbye as that.
Terra nodded his acknowledgement, and walked back to the car. Axel and I waved as Terra drove off, and he waved back but I could see the tears that had just started to fall.
"Axel, do we have to go?" I ask him, gripping the suitcase with more force.
Axel sighed, "Yes, Roxas we do. I know that it's hard, it always going to be hard, letting go and seeing how it affects the people you love is painfully hard. But think to yourself, if you stay here, what are you going to do? Watch the same shows, read the same books and speak the same words. If we go to Australia, there'll be more people to see, more things to do and more opportunities. Remember, Roxas, that the future is full of possibilities." I let go of the suitcase and ran into Axel's arms, letting out the tears that I was trying to hold in.
"Sh, baby. Don't cry, come on, we've got a plane to catch." I nodded, and walked into the airport, not letting go of Axel's hand the entire time.
"Come on Rox, that's our plane." Axel stood up from his chair, holding out his hand. We had just eaten some breakfast and our flight had just been called out. I took his hand, slinging my rucksack behind my back. We both walked to the terminal, and saw Roxel staring back at us with teary eyes. He ran towards us and pulled me into a tight hug.
"Dad, I'm going to miss you." I hugged back with as much force, but with the gentle motherly touch.
"I'm going to miss you too, Roxel. You should retire, and live your life. You deserve the best life, and I know you're in your seventies, but you're still my baby boy and I love you to the moon, and back, to the moon and back again. You look after yourself, treat Soku like a queen." I whispered into his ear, I felt his wet cheek against mine.
"I will Dad, I know I don't appreciate you a lot, but I do appreciate all the things you've done for me. I love you Dad."
"I love you too." I broke away from our hug, once again allowing Axel to say goodbye too. It was Roxel who made the first move, as Axel obviously wasn't sure if he was past the hugging boundary, but Roxel gave him a bone crushing hug.
"I'm gonna miss you too…Dad." More tears fell down my cheeks, and Axel was soon crying too.
"I'm so happy that you forgave me Roxel, I'm sorry for what I did, but I'm so grateful that you've let me come into your life with open arms. I am so proud to call you my son; I just wish I knew you existed sooner." Axel teared up. They soon pulled away, and Axel wiped away his own tears.
"You two should go, or you're going to miss your plane." Roxel stated, I wiped away his tears with a hanky, and kissed his cheek.
"I'll write to you, that's a promise." Axel took hold of my hand, reminding me that we only had a few minutes to board.
"Goodbye Roxel." I said, Roxel smiled and said goodbye to the both of us and walked back through the airport.
"You ready Roxy?" I rolled at my eyes at the name, but nodded anyway.
"As ready as I'll ever be."
Axel and I were sitting in our first class seats, Axel was reading a book with glasses perched on the edge of his nose, while I gazed out of the window admiring the beautiful sights. We were 4 hours into the flight, and all I could think about was Roxel.
"Roxas?" Axel asked suddenly, I looked over at him as he took his glasses off and put them back into their case.
"Yeah?"
"How are you feeling?"
"Bittersweet if I was to put it in one word." I swallowed "Of course I'm excited, but I can't help thinking that I'm never going to see Roxel again, or see my second great-grandchild at all."
"Is Aqua pregnant?" Axel asked, I nodded smiling, it had been a secret between me and Aqua for a while, and I could barely keep my excitement under wraps.
"Oh, okay. Roxas, don't worry, we will see them. Oh, and have you opened the envelope Roxel gave you yet.
I picked up my bag, annoyed that I had forgotten. "No, I completely forgot. Let's open it." I took the envelope out with ease and began to open it. My eyes went wide, and so did Axel's.
"There's thousands of dollars in there!" Axel pointed out, I chuckled to myself, and there was a note from Roxel, which was barely visible due to all the notes.
'Be sure to visit Dad, I knew you wouldn't take all this money, so I told you to open it when it was impossible to give back. You deserve every penny, life your life.
Love you dad x'
I read it through over and over again, I smiled and showed it to Axel, who grinned and kissed my cheek.
"This is a new life for us Rox." Axel stated, I held his hand and looked him in the eyes.
"Yes, and I can't wait. I love you Axel."
"I love you too Roxy."
