Chapter Six: Coming Home

From that night, I knew I couldn't keep my secret any longer. I had seen small signs how hurt and torn Dimitri was about losing his family. My bones would heal, but Dimitri's heart never would knowing his family hated him. Even though I was his girlfriend, his family always held the most love in his heart. I knew that, and respected that. I had come to think of Olena has a mother of my own even though Janie would always be my real mother. I took a breath and rolled off the bed to clear my thoughts. We had moved into our hotel room early this morning and continued our nightly routine. I glanced in the mirror and the after effect of sex was always astonishing. Dimitri smiled at me as he began to brush his teeth.

"Good morning, Roza." He said swishing around mouth wash.

"Did you sleep well?" I asked, holding off this topic as much as I could.

"I have never slept better." He spit and rinsed his mouth of the wash and ran his fingers through his hair.

"Dimitri, I really need to talk to you." I said, biting my lip and lead him to the couch.

"Rose, what is it?" He asked, and released my teeth off my lip.

"Don't hate me okay?" I whispered, hugging him with all my might.

"I could never hate you. Now, what's wrong?" I lifted my phone and showed him the emails.

"My family wants me back..." Dimitri finally says with tears running down his face.

I wrap my arms around him and bury my head in the neck of his shoulder. "Of course they want you back, Dimitri. You are their only son and brother. We will always want you."

"I could never hate you for this, Rose. Am I upset you didn't tell me sooner? Yes, but it is the thought that counts." He looked at the email and held it close to his heart.

"I tried to tell you, but that doesn't matter now. We will have four days until our week is up, but Lissa and even I will understand if you want an extension."

He looked up at me when he heard me. "You are choosing me over Vasilisa?"

I shook my head. "I won't choose sides, but you and her both hold an equal place in my heart. I will guard Lissa all my life, but you only have his chance. Right here, right now, family comes first." I smiled with tears of my own as he tightens his told around my waist.

I played with the strands of his hair as he took out his phone and dialed the number.

His finger froze at the dial button, and I grabbed his other hand. "You can do it." I whisper snuggling into him while putting my feet on the table.

His finger pressed the button, and it rang for quiet sometime then a woman answered. Her accent I could know from anywhere, and Dimitri broke down hearing it.

"Matushka..." He whispers so softly I thought she might miss it, but Olenanever misses anything.

"Dimka? Baby is that you?" Her voice cracks before hearing can be heard and running feet.

"Dimka? Dimka?" Voices yell frantically some I can make out as Sonya, Yeva and Karolina.

"It's really him." I say, having a feeling Dimitri would not have been able to talk.

"Dimka, you must come home right away!" Karolina cries between sobs and Dimitri kisses my lips before answering. "I will when I can. I love you all." He says before hanging up, and engulfs me in another hug, and from then on, I knew we would heal.

It would take some time, but this had truly helped Dimitri. Maybe, just maybe, with his family with him he would be able to move past it all. I had told Dimitri I wanted to take him out to breakfast for the celebration that had occurred. I kept my word on that, but also drove us around until the day had whipped Dimitri out, and he was leaning in his seat sleeping softly. I turned down the music, and called Alberta just because it was the right thing to do. She answered on the first ring, and was pleased to hear from me, but not pleased about my idea. She-along with a lot of people- would not be too thrilled of Dimitri and I going back to Russia also known as the Strigoi capital of the world. Or it was to me at least. In the end, Alberta agreed to the plan only because I explained how it could help Dimitri. While driving, I ran my fingers down Dimitri's chest feeling the soft material of his shirt and smiled. I couldn't wait to see the look on his face. Around seven in the evening, I pulled into the boarding area, and kissed him awake.

"Where are we, Roza?" Dimitri asked as he rubbed his eyes and looked around.

"We are going home." I said with a smile, grabbing our luggage I had packed when he napped, and we stepped into the airport.

His smile could light up a city as we went through security. It was like old times when we would talk about how we would go on all these adventures in Russia. We ate a quick dinner before stepping onto our plane for a twelve hour ride. The ride was surprisingly quiet except for a screaming kid in the back, and the occasional flight attendant's heels stepping down the hall. We shared a martini, and held each other close until we both fell asleep. Time passed, and in time, we were able to descend into the beautiful country. As Guardians, we were quick to get our stuff and into the cool air once we were out of Moscow Sheremetyevo. We scanned the crowd until I seen her ugly face next the beautiful women's brown hair. Dimitri wasted no time into running, and wrapping his arms around his family. Words were unable to describe the moment I was witnessing. There was a ton of crying and laughter I could see from his family and a tear escaped my eye. I could no longer see much of Dimitri, but the top of his head, and wiped away the tear.

"Come join us dear you are family too." Olena exclaimed with a genuine smile on her face.

I bent down and softly hugged Olena and Karolina, but I wasn't sure if her statement was true. Could I still be in the family knowing Yeva and Viktoria hated me?

"I can't believe it's really you." Sonja exclaims not letting go of Dimitri even when he stood up.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked down to see Yeva. "Good job, little girl." She muttered laughing.

I would not let this old hag make me lose my temper. "No thanks to you old hag who still can't see the future." I replied and smiled when the rest of the family snickered.

"Come now! We must get you two home right away. I bet you are exhausted from your long trip here." Olena beamed at the sight when Dimitri held my hand.

With our luggage and nearly the whole gang the car was a tight squeeze. Karolina was

thrilled to show Dimitri a female artist, named Polina Gagarina, had the top hits for

Russia so far.

"Where is Viktoria?" I asked trying to tune out the Russian music.

"She stayed home to watch Paul and Zoya." Olena replied turning down the street they had lived on. She had refused to let Dimitri drive even though he insisted.

Translation: she's still pissed at me I sighed letting myself out of the car and Paul came running out of the house.

"Uncle Dimka, you're home!" Paul flew into Dimitri with a strong force for an ten year old.

"Excuse me young man, but this, this isn't Paul Belikov. Paul Belikov was a 5'1 ten year old last time I saw him." Dimitri teased setting the young boy on his feet.

"It is me! I promise, but I turned eleven!" Paul screamed looking up at Dimitri with adoration.

Dimitri smiled, raised his eyebrow, and bent down to his height. "Alright, I believe you." He ruffled Paul's hair and I sucked in a breath seeing Viktoria, and a now a year and a half old, Zoya and year old Lucya in her arms.

"She's beautiful, Sonja." Dimitri eyed Lucya with her dark brown hair wrapped up in a pink baby bonnet.

"You can hold her. She's been dying to uncle." Sonja encouraged Dimitri and placed Lucya in his arms.

Only I really knew Dimitri's view on how precious life was. Holding Lucya-his niece- was an earth-moving revelation for him. Lucya smiled, with one tiny tooth showing, and pulled at Dimitri's hair that had fallen in transition from the plane to the car. Everyone laughed at this and ushered us into their home. When passing Viktoria, I managed to give her a small smile, but received nothing in return.

"Since it is near dinner time, I thought I would start making supper and everyone has a restful evening before the fun stuff in the morning." Olena removed her shoes and grabbed her apron from the hook on the wall that led into the kitchen.

"That sounds delightful, Olena dear." Yeva answered her as she took a seat on the love couch next to the small dancing fire heating the house.

"Dimka, would you mind cutting up bread slices for me?" Olena hugged Dimitri looking up at him with eyes of joy.

He bent down and kissed her cheek. "I would absolutely love to, Matushka."

While Dimitri and Olena began their mother and son work on baking bread, I found myself taking a Western novel off the shelf, and planted my butt next to the fire place. I only managed to get into the first couple pages when Viktoria called me.

"Can I see you in my room for a moment?" Viktoria asked, only her head showing around the corner.

She must have not stepped out of her room, but I nodded and placed the book on the side of the chair before getting up. I passed Dimitri and gave him thumbs up along with a laugh seeing him roll a bunch of dough in preparation for making the bread. I entered her room and noticed it had changed dramatically. Instead of her side being filled with pictures of her and Nolan, and her clothes in her closet being skanky as hell, her walls were filled with musicians and jeans and printed word shirts hung as replacements for her clothes.

"I love what you done with you room." I noted the small picture on her bedside that held a picture of her family.

She nodded and closed the door. "Rose, I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am. Last time you saw me, I was a mess and I know it. Even today, you must think I hate you for what you did, but I couldn't face you," her voice was becoming harder to hear now with tears flowing from her eyes, "Sonja explained what happened to her after you left, and I was so ashamed. You tried to warn me, care for me like a sister would, and I brushed you away thinking he loved me."

My arms went around the younger girl and looked up at the wall wishing I had Lissa's way with words. "Everyone makes mistakes, Viktoria. You are a young woman who was just clouded by the blind thought of love. I've made plenty mistakes when I was seventeen and eighteen too. Hell, I still make mistakes now. The point of making mistakes is to learn from then, and try to become a better person which I can see you have." I gave her a smile and another hug.

Her eyes glowed as she gave me a smile of her own. "I really have Rose look!" She dragged my hand and explained how she fell in love with bands and always tried to see them whenever they came to Russia. That had bonded the sisters in a passion they could all share. I was touched when she asked if I would still consider her as a sister, and I nearly yelled a yes to her.

A knock interrupted us when Dimitri stood in the doorway. "Dinner is ready." He turned away before either of us could reply, and Viktoria wasted no minutes in going to the table.

With the addition of Dimitri and I, the table was quite full, and Olena had gone all out. Govyadina na Grille, Kartofelnye Oladi, Holushki, Zelenaya Fasol, and Blini was all laid out neatly on the all laid out neatly on the table. Sonja had kindly explained the transition from Russian to English for me, and I grabbed what sounded good. Russian food, I thought, tasted better than American food although nothing could beat a bacon cheeseburger. The Blini had cut up fruits of strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries with whipped cream with chocolate and raspberry sauce on top. I had drowned mine in chocolate earning a laugh from the family. After dinner and dessert, it was Karoline and Viktoria's turn to do the dishes and I waved off Olena's request not to help. If I was apart of this family, family did things together. I smelled Dimitri's colongue before I heard his voice and bent my head back for a kiss.

"I can't thank you enough for all that you did, Roza. This is the best present anyone has ever given me." To show my approval, I deepened the kiss before a wet rag was thrown at our faces.

"Get a room you two!" Viktoria smirked before Dimitri looked down at his younger sister.

"Uh oh, Viktoria, I believe you have unleashed the tickle monster." Dimitri walked towards her with a smile of his own.

Although I believe Viktoria knew there was no such thing, she was playing along for the enjoyment of being with her brother. Everyone knew it was the small moments that counted. He ran towards her and scooped her up planting a kiss on her cheek, and her laughs echoed the halls. Olena lectured the two about not breaking anything in the house, and they both apologized. The rest of the night was filled with Russian family games, that I was eager to learn, and laughs and toasts to a reunited family. Dimitri and I were given our own room for the time we were here, and he kissed me once more. The next day couldn't come fast enough as I dreamed of our first adventures in Russia.
