Chapter 1

When the moon spirit showed her strength once more, it was for a good cause. The moon spirit, named Yue, had been watching a small family in a water bending village far from the city, and where the snow covered the ground.

She loved to watch the small family. The husband always treated his new wife well and they would always walk around hand-in-hand and watch the elders work, and the small number of children play.

She wasn't surprised when she saw that the young wife was with child for the first time. She was happy and watched through the pregnancy. But, unfortunately the pregnancy didn't go so well and the young couple ended up losing the baby after a few months in.

It was a devastating blow to them and it also saddened the Moon Spirit. She wanted to help, but she couldn't do so. As she didn't know how too. And so she continued to watch the young couple.

Yue once again learned that the wife was pregnant. This time with her second child. And she prayed this baby would survive. But luck was never on the Moon Spirit's side it seemed. Because when the pregnancy was 4 months in, the baby was pronounced dead and had to be surgically removed. Yue wept with her young family, wishing that some good fortune would come their way.

Two years passed and there was word that the current Avatar, her old friend Aang, was getting ripe with age and many believed that it would be months before he passed away. The Moon Spirit knew that the next Avatar would be a water bender.

When Yue went to check on her little family a week later she found that the wife was once again pregnant. She was pleased and she hoped this pregnancy would last. As the months went on and the pregnancy progressed, Yue watched as it took a toll on the young woman. The pregnancy wasn't an easy one, even with the wife being a strong fire bender. Yue believed it was because she had already had two stillbirths' years before and she was afraid.

Yes, that was an important fact Yue forgot. The mother of this unborn child was a Fire bender while the father, himself, was an experienced Water Bender. A unique mix, one that many saw as strange because the two elements were such polar opposites. And so, many people in the small village said that the reason the children the two conceived died because of how different the elements were. Yue didn't want to believe it.

As the months progressed, she began to furiously watched her old friend, as his age caused his body to deteriorate she knew he would pass soon. And when she went to check on her little family, she found the couple speaking to another family. The young woman Yue watched over had a companion who was also pregnant with their first child. Yue knew that her couple was 7 months into the pregnancy and she heard that the other family were in their ninth month. Yue knew that one of these two babies would be the next Avatar.

News flew when two weeks later, Aang passed away. Reporters covered the story and they furiously went around in search of an answer. They questioned Yue's poor friend, Katara, as she stood with her three children, two adults and one on the borderline. The oldest son, a non-bender, spoke up for hers and her siblings mother. The other two, the middle and only daughter a water bender, and the youngest an air-bender, would sometimes speak in behalf of their grief-stricken mother. Yue grieved and watched as the White Lotus began looking for the new Avatar, who they knew would be a Water bender, as the cycle had said.

Yue smiled to herself as she welcomed Aang into the sky. He greeted her and she couldn't help but shed a few tears at remembering her friend. She was about to lead him off when she heard a yell that circulated through her palace room. Immediately she ran to her glowing pond and touched it. The image brought her to the home of her young couple's friends. The wife, a beautiful woman named Senna, was in labor and already she could tell the baby was near born. Her husband Tonraq stood by, with the husband of her little family. A water bender named Iliad.

Her young couple were there, keeping the others calm. The young woman – Yue learning her name was Elexis, upon her being called by her husband – was busy holding her friends hand and smoothing her hair back whenever a contraction would hit. She supported her own round belly with one hand and flinched when her friend screamed and pushed. The triber's healer was there to help the newborn along.

And then Yue heard the cry. It was a strong cry, one of a very strong baby girl. She smiled fondly down as the two woman embraced and cried together. When the baby was brought over, Yue sensed that a part of Aang and the avatars previous flowed through the small child. She was the new Avatar.

Yue was happy for the couple, but then she was sad because she desperately wanted to family she watched and cared deeply for the have the next Avatar, after having so much tragedy in their short marriage.

She told Aang the good news when her family where back home and safe. Aang had told her that the moment the child was born he knew she was the Avatar. He felt the strong presence in her. Then Yue went on to tell Aang the name of the newborn.

Korra.

Aang had smiled and said it was a strong name. And then he told the Moon Spirit he must go and then with one last hug and a few fleeting words of exchange he went away.

Yue continued on with her watch over the little family of two and a half.

When Elexis neared her final weeks of pregnancy, she felt something to be wrong. Yue was worried and she watched, in fear, as Elexis fell into an early labor. Yue began praying that this baby would survive. The child had made it through 8 full months, but now came the hard part and suddenly unexpected part.

The birth.

The birth was a tough one. And an exhausting one. Being born one month early and having the baby being backwards; the healers had to induce a cesarean to remove the baby from Elexis' stomach. Elexis' body became weakened and so she had to be put under in order for the pregnancy to take a lesser toll on her small body.

Yue was pleased when the baby was pulled from her mother's stomach. Yes, the baby was also a female. But Yue noticed something was off about the black haired baby. The baby was silent.

The Moon Spirit was scared. She was afraid the baby was dead. She watched anxiously as the healers got the child's blood to circulate and the baby started breathing. Yue gave a breath in relief. But she was still very worried. The child didn't cry. But yet she was alive, and that small fact made Yue happy.

Over the years, after the horrible first pregnancy and hard second one, the Moon Spirit had begun to learn how she could fix this problem. She desperately wanted her little family to be happy. And so with practice, she had mastered the element of giving life.

When the family took the silent baby home, late in the evening. Yue watched as they laid her in the crib they had previously made. She watched as Elexis cried and her husband held her tightly. And then she watched as they prayed. She heard them whispering her name and praying she could help.

Yue was confused, because they hadn't asked for her help before. But then she realized that the night was a blue moon. A very special night for Water Benders. Yue knew that tonight was when she would put her healing to work.

When Elexis and Iliad went to bed, she stepped into her pond and came into the world of the living. She was only allowed this once every 6 years and she had purposely saved it for this special night.

As the silent child lay sleeping in her crib, Yue took note of how short and light her breath was. Yue placed a palm on the child's forehead, marveling at how warm the tiny human was. She hadn't felt actual flesh since before she gave her life to the moon. She leaned over the small baby and placed her lips upon her forehead.

She whispered a few words to the infant and watched as her power flowed through the child. She witnessed the act of life flowing into the baby. She hadn't seen it the last time it happened – mainly because it had been her own birth – and she was amazed at how it worked. The small baby began squirming in her crib, seemingly growing stronger with each ripple of power that flowed through her tiny body. Yue ran her fingers down the girl's head and when she did, she uttered a soft gasp. When she had run her finger down the baby's head, that thick strip of hair turned white, much like her own.

She took a step back when the baby opened her toothless mouth and uttered a wail for the first time in her life. Yue hid behind the curtain of the room as the two parents ran in, utterly shocked that their child was crying.

Elexis had picked the baby up and was holding her tight to her chest, crying and whispering small nothings. Iliad himself wiped his eyes at seeing his daughter cry. Yue was wiping her eyes, marveling at the fact she felt her real tears, instead of mist fall from her eyes. She knew she shouldn't reveal herself, but she so desperately wanted to.

And so she followed what her heart told her and did.

"I have given life to the child…" she spoke out gently, emerging halfway from the curtain. Iliad and Elexis turned, startled. The small baby had finally quieted and was resting in her mother's arm.

"Who are you?" Iliad asked, completely baffled at who this strange woman was.

"You know me. My name is Yue, but that's all I can say. Your daughter, she will live and grow strong. I made sure of it, a part of me is inside her and will continue to help her stay healthy." The Moon Spirit smiled gently, her glowing blue eyes shining happily.

"We can't possibly thank you enough for what you've done. We are eternally grateful and forever in your debt." Elexis said, bowing her head. She seemed to understand who Yue was much quicker than her husband who continued to stare at her with a frown. Elexis was a smart firebender, Yue could tell.

Yue waved her off gracefully, her old manners at once being a princess returning, "No thanks is necessary, I am just glad that you finally have a child after so much hardship," she turned, preparing to leave as the blue moon was slowly sinking and she felt her powers draining. If she wanted to make it to see Katara she would need to move on quickly, "but, if you want to remember me, observe your daughter's hair," the couple did and saw hat the baby no longer had a full head of black hair. Half was white , "that is my gift to her." She said softly. When the baby stirred Yue moved closer and Elexis held the baby a bit looser.

The child opened her eyes and Yue saw, with a light gasp the color. Her left eye was the piercing amber of a fire bender, but the right eye was her own blue color.

"And her right eye is also a gift. Please raise her well and don't make me regret the choice I have made. I've watch over you two since the day you got married. I hope I am making a plausible decision in this." She stated, "I do not give this gift often. Please do not abuse it and promise to raise your daughter with love."

"You are, Yue. And we will raise her with love and care." Elexis promised. Yue gave another smile and clasped her hands together.

"Then I have made the right choice. But I must go now." She stated, feeling the drain.

"Thank you again, so very much." Iliad thanked, bowing low.

"One last thing, what are you naming her?" Yue asked, tilting her head as she opened the front door.

"We were thinking Sena, but now that you have blessed her. Tsukiko sounds like a splendid name." Elexis said, elated. Yue was honored, Tsukiko meant "moon child" in Japanese. Meaning this little girl was like her adopted daughter, in a strange way. Yue wiped her eyes and gave one last farewell before she left the home and disappeared into the sky, off to go see her old friend.

Tsukiko.

She might just have to continue to watch over this little girl.
