How Do You Know?

Chapter One: Hell on the Hilltops

Hilltop High School. It has a ring to it, don't you think? This is the cage that I will be spending the next approximately 1,080 days here. I stood at the front of the building, my eyes glued to the sign on the door. All freshman to the auditorium by nine o'clock. Welcome to Hilltop! However, were 'freshman' was scrawled roughly onto the paper, I saw the words 'fresh meat' instead. In a way, we were fresh meat. New people at a new place. Well, I wasn't new. In fact, I had been through the Hilltop school system for nine years already. I had just never been through the high school.

"Louis!"

I turned to see Liam, my best friend, waiting for me at the front door.

"Are you coming? We've got to make it to the auditorium by nine! Come on, move your girly bum!"

Liam. He had been my best friend since kindergarten when I punched the kid who wacked him with a Barbie. Liam. He was always the guy looking out for me. Liam. Liam was just Liam.

"Coming!" I yelled back running to wear we was standing.

We followed the flow of traffic towards the auditorium. A few kids had maps out, or were staring around frantically. Liam, was one of these people. I tried to relax and follow everyone else. I knew that no matter what, it would be fine and that it was silly to worry. When we finally made it to the auditorium, we took our seats. Liam and I were seated in the middle row of the middle section of seats.

As the principal stepped up to the speaker, I started to zone out. The red velvet lining the seats was starting to make my bum sweaty and uncomfortable. How long could this assembly last? I was literally about to groan when my eyes landed on him.

He was turned around in his seat chatting to some lad with very dark hair that seemed to defy all gravity laws. This boy had dark slick curls that were hanging out of his beanie. His nose was wide and adorable and it gave him an innocent appearance. His smirk however, led me to believe that he was cheeky and somewhat sarcastic. His eyes were what really held my interest.

They hear a bright jade green. When he smiled, they crinkled at the ends letting the person know just how amusing he found the situation. The way he-wait! What was I doing? Was I really checking this guy out? Shit, yeah. I was.
