Life's Game
It's been three months since the Reach's Endgame, since he lost Wally, since the twins lost their other parent.
Three months since his retirement.
He was not alone through; the Team and League were very supportive, helping him move into a bigger home. This one on the sea after discovering gills on the twins when they were two months, the apartment held too many memories. Batman had obvious built it or at least had a hand in it, if the high security system and hidden high-tech computer was anything to go by. He was never short on visitors or babysitters, Conner and Dick being the primary ones, and the twins kept him busy enough even with only being three months old.
From diapers always in need of changing, daily feedings, and finding missing sock all over the place (once in the Batcave), to doctor appointments at Justice League Watchtower where Leaguers got in the way as they tried to play with the babies. To "tummy time" as the human books called it, that were spent with heads lifting and kicking feet. Occasionally he consulted in League or Team business, it was a busy enough life for him, and though he missed Wally, though his heart always felt like it was shattering all over again; and still had the occasional nightmare.
He kept going.
On an unusually warm day, Kaldur had just put his youngest twin down for a nap, the baby for some reason fighting sleep as much as his tiny little body could, when the computer beeped quietly. Wondering if someone had found another pacifier, Kaldur answered.
"Hey Kaldur!" Nightwing greeted.
"Hello my friend" Kaldur said blinking, "you look….happy"
And he did, a surprise, since for the past three months the former Boy Wonder hardly ever smiled, the lost of Wally had weighed heavily on him.
"Good reason for it too" Nightwing said, "anyway, gear up the twins, Ma'gann and Conner should be arriving to bring you to the Hall of Justice right…about…now"
The familiar sound of the Bioship landing had Kaldur raising a brow at the grinning man on the screen.
"See you there!" Dick chirped before signing off.
Kaldur sighed before going to the twin's room just as the door opened, and Ma'gann and Conner came in. Usually he wouldn't have been happy to interrupt nap time, but the Bioship always guarantee getting the twins to sleep, and Dick; who knew the importance of nap time and Conner who honored it with a somewhat disturbing intensity. Wouldn't dare interrupt unless it was important.
"Hello Kaldur"
From where he was carefully lifting his oldest out of the crib, Kaldur looked over his shoulder at Ma'gann who was smiling and looked seconds away from hovering in joy. Curious, he gave a little smile, he could hear Conner in the kitchen gathering the usual for baby travel, Ma'gann grabbed the other twin. Neither baby twitching as they were placed in their carriers. After making sure he had everything, and praying that he had enough diapers and wipes, everyone boarded the Bioship, appropriate baby seats waiting; and made their way to the Hall of Justice.
Neither Ma'gann nor Conner; who also looked very happy, would tell him what was going on. Though they reassured him it wasn't Earth threatening, nor had Conner been replaced by robots, another clone or shape-shifting aliens. And no, he was not under any kind of mental control.
Finally they arrived at the Hall, and Dick was waiting for him.
"This way" Dick said, taking one of the twins, carrier and all.
"Why are we going to the Medical Wing?" Kaldur asked when he realized their destination, "Dick, Conner, Ma'gann, what is going on?"
"Remember that energy spike I told you about two weeks ago?"
Kaldur nodded as they arrived at the Wing, and made their way to a specific room.
"Well another happened two days ago, and well—"
The door swished open.
The entire Speedster family was there, surrounding the bed, off in the corner was Artemis, La'gaan, and Aquaman. Everyone had looked up when the door opened.
"Kaldur" Barry greeted, his cowl was down, and he was smiling.
And then, he knew, he knew.
His hands started to tremble, and Conner quickly took the carrier out of his hand. The Speedster family parted and Kaldur's throat went dry, and he made a sound in the back of his throat that he couldn't name. There in the bed, looking thinner than the last time he saw him, dressed in an hospital gown and a bit pale was Wally West. His Wally, his Amar.
"Hi" Wally said, voice so quiet.
He wasn't aware that he was moving until he was by the bedside, and his hands had taken hold of the other's.
They were warm and real.
Wally was real.
"It's okay, Kaldur it's okay, I'm back, I'm here"
He was crying, tears rolling down his cheeks, sobs and mixed words of apologizes, happiness, and begging to never leave again falling from his lips. He must look like such a mess, but he didn't care. Arms wrapped around him, and that familiar much loved voice whispered to him. Whispered that everything was okay, he was never leaving him again. That he was here and real.
No one said anything.
After what seem liked days, Wally finally left go and Kaldur settled on the edge of the bed, his hand not letting go of Wally's. He wanted to ask, he had so many questions, but they could wait for now. There was something else more important to be done.
"Dick, Conner" the Atlantean then said.
Understanding, the two carefully unbuckled and lifted the now awake twins from their carriers and brought them over to the two. Dick gave one to Kaldur and Conner gave the other to Wally.
"They've gotten so big" Wally said, voice tight as he looked down at the baby who blinked up at him.
"They have" Kaldur smiled, "and they keep losing their socks"
Wally laughed, the twin in his arms coo'ed and smiled at the sound, Kaldur's face soften, that was the baby's first smile. He moved closer, allowing Wally to caress the other twin who yawned, sleepy once again.
"Hello Ansgar, hello Anwyl" Wally said, green eyes wet with unshed tears, relief and happiness, "I'm your daddy, I came back to you, and I'm promise I won't leave you and your Papa again"
