Chapter 1: Prologue

I do not own Inuyasha.

The young girl cried quietly, biting back a cry of pain as each hit came down on her delicate form. The other children had been sent to their rooms and were quietly listening, praying for her safety. When the woman finally stopped and glared, the child was covered in bruises and rapidly drying blood; the woman staggered in her drunken state, shouting words that came out in a slur, "You stupid child! Leave here! You're a lazily bitch! No one wants you!"

The little girl jumped up and ran out the door and into the cold air, her pajama clad body bruised and battered, blood sliding down her cheek and nose. Her bare feet led her out into the cold night air, earning scrapes and tiny rocks.

She cried loudly, snot mingling with blood as it ran down her chin. She ran towards the only place she knew, the park. She ran across the road, pausing mid-stride as a pair of headlights flashed on her and she heard the screeching of wheels.

She gasped silently and covered her bruised face with her equally bruised hands. She was suddenly grabbed by two strong, rough hands and picked up, the person running straight towards the sidewalk as the car stopped a few feet from where she had been standing. She looked up and blinked at the tall black-haired male that held her as gently as he could. She barely noticed the concerned citizens rushing over to see what had happened.

"Are you fine, child?" A middle-aged woman voiced, concern and sudden anger flashing across her face as she noticed the girl's appearance.

"What happened, are you okay?" One old man said in a rush, panting as he stopped within two feet of the girl and unidentified man.

"What were you thinking? You could have dented my car!" The driver shouted, leaning against the side of his car.

She whimpered and hugged the black-haired wonder, sniffing when she heard him say something in a deep voice; however unable to make the words out, she ignored it.

"This is crap! She should have been running across the road! Jaywalking is illegal!" The old man growled. "Stupid girl!"

The girl began to cry loudly as he called her that. He reminded her of the woman back home. The other people glared at him and told him to leave. He did with an angry mutter and a glare at them all especially the little girl.

"Where do you live, honey? Where are your parents?" The kind woman asked, laying a hand on her shoulder. The girl shrugged slightly and continued to cry.

"I shall take her to my house. From what I saw, she ran from that orphanage and I think was trying to get the park over there." The black-haired male said, nodding at the other people and standing up.

"Be careful, both of you!" The old lady said sternly, sighing sadly and patting the girl's head.

"Yes, do be careful." The man said, smiling at the child warmly and ruffling her hair slightly.

They nodded at the man and watched him walk away, hailing a taxi and getting in with the girl. The taxi took off and the people slowly went their own way, murmuring to each other.
