In the Pantry

by Nora Holden Walker

This is actually a segment from a roleplay I'm doing on tumblr right now (brothersandsisters-rp dot tumblr dot com), but I liked it so much I decided to post it. Hopefully you guys like it too, it's just mindless babble about the pantry and Rebecca from Nora's POV.

Nora was working in the pantry, cleaning out old food, reorganizing things yet again. It was well known within the family that the pantry was Nora's safe haven. That's where she went when things got rough, when things overwhelmed her, when she needed to shield her emotions from her children. She needed to stay strong for her children. Always.

There were life changing events that happened in that pantry. She laughs, remembering how Kitty was almost born in that pantry.

Nora steps up onto the chair she has sitting beside her, enabling her to reach the top shelf. When William was alive she didn't have this problem. When William was alive, she didn't have many problems. He was always there to solve anything, even reaching boxes of cake mix just above Nora's reach.

She remembers going into the pantry after finding out about Rebecca. The house had been empty. She remembers walking in, and collapsing on the floor. She cried more that day than she had when William died. The betrayal had hit her like a slap in the face as she sat cross-legged on the cold floor, sobbing into her hands. She never could have been able to tell what a blessing Rebecca would come to be.

Nora is so thankful that Rebecca came into their lives. She hopes she knows, but Nora has a feeling Rebecca has some sort of an idea. Nora picks up a box of cookies from the back of the shelf, something she had bought two weeks previous and had shoved in the pantry into the only place it would fit. Nora thought for a moment; she knows she has tea in the cupboard in the kitchen, and she knows who loves the chocolate coated cookies more than anyone else in the family.

Nora steps down from her chair and walks into the kitchen, cookies in hand, and picks up the phone.

"Hi, Rebecca? It's Nora." She says with a smile.
