Book of the Update: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Chapter 30

I take a deep breath, wiping my clammy hands on the silky fabric of my dress. After a lot of thinking and planning, Thomas and I have finally figured out what we're going to do- the general idea, at least, but that doesn't make the execution of it any easier. Long story short, after a drink or two, Thomas and I decided that we weren't going to stay here; we decided to go back to the New World when they returned, as Thomas Jones and Arielle LeClair. They were allowing women this time, so that a permanent colony could be set up, so Ari Williams could be disposed of, leaving just me. Thomas didn't want to leave his mother and father forever, so he's gone to ask them if they'll come as part of the new colony, and I'm going to ask Andre what he's doing. I would love if he would come, and it might get Jacques to come as well, but it's his choice, and every bird has to leave the nest eventually. Alone.

Huh. Deep breath again. It's been somewhat of an eventful day, I suppose you could say, and there's still more to come. Well, I wanted exciting, didn't I? This could definitely be put under the category of exciting. Off to meet the king…wow, this really is something. My father, as appointed leader of the Roanoke's, has been given a place to stay in the palace as a guest of the Royal Family. Once I explained to the guards at the gate that Andre LeClair was my father, and that I could prove it, they put down their weapons and escorted me inside the gates. And Andre is in a meeting with the king right now, so I'm left waiting in some corridor, trying not to touch anything lest it break.

I sigh, and it echoes around me for ages. I hear the faint sound of a door and stand up, trying to peer around the corner to see if I can see anything, but to no avail. Muffled voices echo around me, a high-and-mighty-sounding one that I assume is the king and the softer tones of my father and I step forward, trying to see past the stupid wall blocking my view. The voices stop and footsteps follow the silence, coming closer and closer until I'm standing face to face with my father.

"Arielle," he says, sweeping me up into a hug. My feet dangle off the ground as he swings me around, the way he never got to do when I was little. When he sets me down, his hands are still on my shoulders and his height makes me look up at him, and I really do feel like a little girl. "Can you take me to see your brother? And your Aunt and Uncle?" I nod and he ruffles my hair with a grin. "Good girl."

I push his hand away, but he knows I'm smiling too. "Are you staying here or going back?"

He smiles sadly. "I'm afraid I have to go back, and I wa-"

I cut him off with a childish squeal, wrapping my arms around his neck. "I'm going back too!"

"With that boy of yours, Thomas?" his face is stern, but his eyes twinkle and I blush, choosing to ignore the question.

After a loud and tearful reunion between my father and Jacques and a disbelieving and then joyful reunion between my father and my Aunt and Uncle, we all sat down in the parlor once again and Andre told us about his meeting with the king and about America and the Roanoke's and everything, and then he told them that he was going back and so was I, and Jacques stood up and declared that he was as well, right on the spot. After a few long hours (that I really don't feel necessary to explain, as I didn't pay attention most of the time) Aunt Caroline and Uncle Jonathan decide to come as well. As they all begin to pack and get the details from Andre, I quietly slip out the door unnoticed to meet Thomas in our rendezvous spot in the forest I always used to pretend was enchanted.

"They're all going, Thomas, my whole family!" I tell him joyfully, and he beams at me.

"Wonderful! Mine as well!"

"That's fantastic, we'll all be there together!" I'm almost embarrassed at how we sound, but it really is wonderful news.

He smiles, but looks almost nervous this time. "Arielle, since this time, you'd be going as yourself, and you can stay yourself forever, would you rethink what I asked you back in the New World?"

My smile fades. I knew that he would ask, but I want him to be sure. "Say it."

"I can't," he looks pathetic, his face red and his eyes full of disappointment. "Not if you're going to say no."

"Who says I am?" I raise my eyebrow at him and his face slowly brightens as he begins to smile again and takes my hands and kneels down.

"Arielle LeClair, I'm going to say it again, and I mean it. I do; I really, truly mean it. I love you, so much, and I will forever. Would you possibly travel to America with me as my fiancé? We could start a new life together in the New World, as Arielle and Thomas. No more secrets," he says the last part so quietly it's almost a whisper. "So what do you say? Will you marry me?"

I pull him up, not taking my hands out of his and slowly, sweetly kiss him. "Absolutely. Forever and always, Thomas."

Fin.

A/N Short and somewhat sweet ending, I hope. I know that this was rushed and sloppy, but I really needed to wrap this story up. It's been sort of fading away from me these past few months and it's slowly just turning to never ending mush….yup. So that's it! Please tell me what you thought :)
