In the middle of the night, Narcissa was sleeping peacefully in her bed. Her sleep was disturbed by the feeling of something poking her arm. She thought it was her sister annoying her.
"Leave me alone, Bella." she groaned.
Lucius put his hand over Narcissa's mouth to quiet her. She instinctively bit him.
"Ouch!" Lucius pulled his hand back. "What are you a dog?"
Narcissa sat up and pulled her blanket over her chest. "You! What are you doing in my bedroom? And did you call me a dog?!"
Lucius shook his throbbing hand. "You bit me! Dogs bite!"
Narcissa gasped. "You are calling me a dog!"
"You bite and you are slow."
Narcissa let out a screamed that woke up the other inhabitants of the house.
"Be quiet!" said Lucius. Remembering that she bites, he picked up an pillow and put it over her face. She struggled against him and knocked the pillow out of his hands.
Draco and Hermione rushed to Narcissa's bedroom. Draco opened the door, revealing his parents fighting on the bed. He and Hermione entered the room.
"What the devil is going on here?" asked Draco.
"She bit me!" Lucius said.
"He called me a dog! And he's trying to smother me with a pillow!" Narcissa accused him in return.
"You are worse than a dog!" he said jumping on top of her.
Narcissa pulled his hair. "You're the big hairy dog!"
"Lucius, get off her!" said Draco.
"Narcissa, let him go!" said Hermione.
Hermione and Draco pulled Narcissa and Lucius apart but they had strong grips on each other's hair.
"Children!" said Anna, which grabbed their attention and caused them to freeze. She entered the room in her long silk robe.
Frightened, Lucius and Narcissa released the other.
"Lucius, explain what you are doing in Narcissa's bedroom." said Draco.
"I was...I want to play a game with her." explained Lucius.
There was no denying it was a lie.
"I don't want to play your ridiculous game." said Narcissa.
"That's fine with me. I'm going to bed." Lucius said. He marched out the door and back to his bedroom.
Draco went after him. He closed Lucius' bedroom door.
"Tell me the truth. What were you doing in her bedroom?"
Lucius crossed his arms over his chest stubbornly. "I already told you."
Draco impatiently tapped his foot.
"Lucius Malfoy!" he started.
Lucius ignored him. He climbed on to his bed and pulled the covers over him body. "I'm going to sleep. Get out."
Draco found himself obeying Lucius. He revered Lucius because he was his father even if he was not himself. He went to Narcissa's bedroom to check on her. Hermione and Anna had Narcissa calmed and back in bed without trouble. Hermione, Anna, and Draco went into another to discuss Lucius.
"He's...he's..." Draco was struggling to describe his father without being disrespectful.
"A child." Anna supplied.
"That too." said Draco.
Hermione was attempting to calm him down. "Don't get worked up."
"Yes, Draco, stress is not good for the baby." said Anna, which forced Draco to relax. "I think it's best if you focus your attention mainly on Narcissa."
"What of my father?" he asked.
"You should place him under Hermione's care." said Anna. "Hermione, you wouldn't mind being strict with Lucius do you?"
"Not at all." Hermione said without hesitation.
"Good."
"I don't know who to be worried for. You or him." said Draco.
The next morning, breakfast was eaten in silence. Narcissa was her usual quiet self while Lucius played with his food.
"How long are we going to be here?" Lucius suddenly asked.
"A while." said Hermione.
"When are her-" Lucius pointed at Narcissa, "-parents going to fetch her?"
Narcissa looked up from her plate to stare at Hermione. She wanted to know too.
Hermione was caught in a dilemma. She felt uneasy. How was she going to explain to them that their parents are dead? They were children. How are they going to react?
"Both of your parents are very busy. They would sent word when they are coming." said Anna.
Lucius accepted the answer and returned to playing with his food. Hermione looked to Draco. He was as apprehensive about this situation as much as she was. After breakfast was over, Anna took the Lucius and Narcissa into the play room to let Draco and Hermione talk.
"They miss their parents that's the reason they've behaving odd all week." said Draco.
"They're growing curious by the day. What are we going to do? I can't lie to them." said Hermione.
"Let me think. My grandparents on my mother's side passed when she was thirty-eight. My grandmother on my father's side of the family passed when he was eighteen. My grandfather was the last to go from dragonpox..." Draco's voice trailed off as he attempted to focus on a solution.
"It's not like we can use Poly Juice potion." commented Hermione.
"Aunt Andromeda!" said Draco. "My Aunt Andromeda looks exactly like my grandmother. We can convince her to pretend to be my grandmother and visit my mother."
"That's brilliant but about Lucius? Do you have relatives who resemble any your grandparents?"
"No," he said sadly. He was about to give up when he spotted his reflection in the window and stared. "I resemble my grandfather. I can disguise myself as him. I'll go find old portraits of him when he was young."
"And I'll owl Andromeda."
In the playroom, Anna conjured a rug and large pillows for Narcissa and Lucius to lay on while she told them a story. She conjured images in the air to illustrate her tale. Both were listening closely, amazed by the colors and lights flashing.
"What do you think?" Anna asked them when she was finished.
Narcissa sighed in content. "It's so romantic."
Lucius looked at Narcissa and cringed. "It's not romantic."
"Do you even know what romantic means?" Narcissa realized long ago that the method to handle Lucius was to not remain quiet. He was a git no matter what and she was tried of being teased.
"Of course I know. And the story wasn't romantic." he said the word in a high tone, imitating her. "They survived the war only to lose their memories of each other. It's a tragedy."
"They are together in the hospital. That makes it a happy ending."
"But they don't recognize each other."
"They will!" Narcissa said loudly. She turned to Anna and asked in a respectful tone. "Won't they?" She was touched by the sad story of the married couple who lived through a horrible war together and got their memories taken away by evil demons.
"Eventually," answered Anna.
Narcissa was so happy that she was in tears.
Lucius stared at her. He didn't like seeing her cry. "Stop that." he ordered.
When Narcissa cried harder, he moved away from her to put distance between them. Anna hugged Narcissa, which soothe her. Anna observed Lucius's reaction to Narcissa. It truly bothered him to see Narcissa cry. Adult Lucius loved Narcissa. Young Lucius doesn't love her but he displayed signs of affection towards her. He was trying to be kind to her but his actions and words are coming off harsher than he realizes.
"Can we play outside?" asked Lucius.
"Do you want to play outside?" Anna asked Narcissa.
Narcissa sniffed a yes.
Anna guided the two outside and conjured toys for them to play with. She allowed them to play as she watched from the chair near the house. She was pretending to read a book while secretly listening for conversations between them. Narcissa was arranging her wooden blocks into a mountain on the soft grass. Lucius was arranging his higher and bigger than hers.
"What were you doing in my room last night?" Narcissa asked him.
Lucius glanced at Anna, who appeared to be deep in her book, before responding to Narcissa's question. "I wanted to know where you were."
Narcissa thought he was odd. "It was night time. I was sleeping in my bed. Where else would I be?"
"Next to me." Lucius said.
"I am next to you."
Lucius pushed his blocks aside to sit closer to her. "I mean when you sleep. Why are you so slow?"
Narcissa thought over his words. He was insulting her intelligence as usually and talking nonsense. "Why would I be sleeping next to you?"
Anna glanced up from her book. She found this interesting. Could it be that Lucius' memories were returning to him faster than Narcissa's memories?
Lucius stared at Narcissa. "Your hair is always on my face. It tickles."
Narcissa didn't understand what he was talking about. She didn't like the way he was looking at her too. It made her chest hurt. When he reached his hand and touched her hair, she gasped in fright and ran to Anna for protection.
Anna feigned surprise. "Narcissa, what's wrong?"
"I...I..." Narcissa lowered her gaze. "A big, yellow beetle won't stop staring at me."
Anna motioned for Narcissa to sit with her. "Don't be scared. It's gone."
Lucius pressed his lips into a pout. He didn't understand why Narcissa ran away from him. All he wanted to do was touch her hair. Why wouldn't she let him? He looked down at the blocks. Since Narcissa was over there it meant these blocks are his now. He pulled her blocks closer to his and arranged them together to finish his mountain.
Draco and Hermione approached them from the house.
"Lucius, what are you making?" asked Hermione.
"A mountain."
"That's a brilliant structure you've got there." said Draco.
"Looks sturdy." said Hermione.
"Thank you." said Lucius. He appreciated the praise but they were not the ones he wanted to impress.
Anna gave her book to Narcissa to read alone while she spoke with Draco and Hermione. She told them about Narcissa's reaction to knowing her own story to Lucius being visibly upset by Narcissa's rejection. The three adults turned to Lucius and Narcissa, who had her head buried in the book. Lucius was sitting with his legs crossed on the ground. He watched longingly at Narcissa. He picked up a block and threw it at her. It hit her ankle and bounced on the ground. The book fell from Narcissa's hands and she gave a startled cry. Draco and Hermione rush to calm Narcissa. Anna went to help soothe Narcissa. Lucius knew he was in trouble and ran to hide. Hermione inspected Narcissa's ankle and healed it with her wand. Narcissa was sniffing on Hermione's chest.
"Its better now." said Hermione.
"I can't believe he did this!" exclaimed Draco. "Where is he?"
Anna pointed to the tree she saw Lucius climb up. Leaves rustled as Lucius spotted Anna's accusing finger and ducked his head behind branches. Draco marched to Lucius' tree and stopped in front of it.
"You come down this minute!" demanded Draco. He had been angry at his father in the past but this one topped them. He was not going to allow his father to hurt his mother like that.
Lucius refuse to move. He hugged his legs and pressed his face over his knees. Maybe if he stayed up here long enough, they'll forget about him? His hopes were lost when he felt the tree shaking underneath him. He no longer felt the tree underneath him. When he looked up he discovered that he was hovering a foot above the ground. Lucius kicked his legs and waved his arms, floating in the air like a fish struggling to return to the water. He struggled a little more before he fell on the ground. Draco was huffing in air. It was becoming difficult for him to breath. He clutched his chest and feeling a stinging pain. Hermione went to Draco and lead him into the house to get him a potion to drink to relax him.
Anna ordered Narcissa and Lucius into their bedroom and to stay there. She knocked on Hermione and Draco's door before entering. Draco was laying on the bed. Hermione was at his side.
"We agreed Hermione was going to handle Lucius, did we not?" Anna reminded him.
"But he hurt her." said Draco.
"I understand." said Anna. "For the benefit or your health, you should restraint yourself." She exchanged looks with Hermione, who nodded back to her. The women were wordlessly agreed to a pack. The next time Lucius misbehaves, Hermione was going to approach him before Draco tries. Anna would keep Draco distracted.
"Do you know about their courtship before their marriage?" Anna asked.
"They rarely speak about it. Although, I recall mother mentioning that father taking her on dates in Hogsmeade." said Draco. "Why do you ask?"
"From what I have observed, Narcissa tolerates Lucius presences. Lucius vines for Narcissa's attention." said Anna.
"You think that's how their relationship was?" said Hermione. She recalled Narcissa sharing stories with her when they were at St. Mungos. "Narcissa loves Lucius." It was something she and Draco can agree with.
"She loved him when she was an adult." Anna reminded them.
Hermione and Draco admitted that Anna had a point.
"Perhaps we can ask Aunt Andromeda about my mother and father when she arrives." suggest Draco. He and Hermione shared their plans to impersonate his grandparents to Anna.
"If you're going to do it I would advise you to make it a short visit. They may be children but they're not fools. They know their parents."
"We took that into account." said Hermione.
Narcissa heard a soft knock on her door.
"Come in." she said believing it was one of the adults. She was disappointed and angry when Lucius poked his blonde head inside.
"Can I come in?" he asked timidly, which surprised her.
Tears stung her eyes. "No! Go away!"
Instead of going as she said, he entered her bedroom and shut the door.
"I said go away!" she said again but he was not listening.
"I've come to apologize."
Narcissa's tears were falling down her cheeks and she hated it. She wanted to speak but a large lump was caught in her throat.
"Please, don't cry anymore. It makes me sad when you cry." He came closer to her and did the unthinkable. He kissed her cheek.
Narcissa inhaled a sharp breath and started at him with large watery eyes.
