"You two stay here," Lin barked at Asami and Bolin as she, Tenzin and Mako made their way down the tunnel. Asami's gaze stayed fixed on their fleeting figures. She knew Mako was going so he could find Korra. She felt a knot form in her throat and tears stinging the back of her eyes. He had such passion and concern for Korra, and she couldn't help but wonder if he would act the same way if she was missing. She tightened up, crossing her arms across her chest and biting her lip to prevent the impending sob.
Bolin couldn't help but stare at her as Asami seemed to make her body as small as possible. It seemed like she wanted to dissapear. He sighed, unsure of what to do. After being told that your boyfriend cheated on you with the girl he was currently trying to rescue, it's kind of hard to cheer somone up with a few jokes. Although Mako and Asami had been dating for awhile, his own interactions with her had been limited, so Bolin wasn't sure how to act around her without Mako there. But, when he saw her shoulders begin to shake, he abandoned any reluctance because he knew she needed to be comforted. Bolin walked over, gently placing a hand on Asami's shoulder.
"Hey, is everything alright?"
Asami turned to him. A few tears were making their way down her cheeks, leaving dark trails of mascara. The sight of her crying absolutely broke his heart. In the short time Bolin had known her, Asami had been nothing but fearless in the face of adversity. When she found out her father was an Equalist, she bit the bullet and did what was right. Of course she was still sad sometimes, but the look on her face now was of someone truly broken.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She wiped away the tears, though they were quickly replaced by fresh ones, rolling down her cheeks and dripping off her chin. Bolin cupped her chin, tilting her face upward as he wiped her damp cheeks.
"Hey, don't cry, it'll be okay..." He spoke so softly that Asami barely made out what he said, but it didn't matter. Her eyes shimmered and she enveloped Bolin in a hug, grasping at his shirt. He returned it, giving her a gentle squeeze.
"He loves her, doesn't he?" She managed to get out between sobs. Bolin sighed again, holding her closer. It was all too obvious, really. He actually felt a little resentment towards his brother for his forward display of his feelings. Not only did he say he wasn't interested in Korra, but he was doing it in front of his girlfriend, someone he thought Mako cared for very deeply. Bolin thought he was doing the right thing by keeping his romantic emotions in check and just being Korra's friend. He thought it'd be wrong to try and push any romantic agenda on her, and he didn't even have a girlfriend. It made him almost...angry.
Before Bolin could say anything, an alarm sounded and they knew their friends would be back out there soon. Asami dried her face and took a seat at the buggy, Bolin watching the entrance to the tunnel.
"Let's go, people!" He shouted when their figures emerged. Lin, Tenzin and Mako hopped on and they took off. For now, Asami and Bolin squelched any emotions that didn't have to do with finding Korra. Those were for another time, though they didn't know when that time would be.
