Love me the best
…
…
When I gaze at you, I wonder what you see
that look on your brow, pure serenity
your gentle hand upon my back
the warmth bleeds right through my flack.
The breeze brushes by my whiskers and your hair
you gaze into space; what do you see there?
your feet brush the water blue
I curl in your lap, always to remain true.
And yet, fear takes hold of my heart
a taste of mistrust could easily tear us apart
What is it for us this future shall hold?
All your plans, so brutal and bold?
I want to be there when you fight
I want to become perfect in your sight
I want to make you love me the best
I think, I think I know how to pass the test...
If I were to evolve with the rain
I'd be fully exposed, free from all pain
I would be lovely and sleek and slick and slim
On the hottest of days, together we would swim.
But a fish lives a lonely life in the sea
All liquid fins, falling away so slippery
I would escape your grip and float into the deep
The water I love would be the tears that I weep.
If I were to evolve with the lightning
becoming a creature of claws and fangs, very frightening
I would be the defender, running by your side
and together we could cross the land wide.
But play with lightning and you'll likely get struck
In my terrible form I will forever be stuck
and if you came to fear me, as you undoubtedly would
then you would probably leave me for good.
If I were to evolve with the flame
grow beyond the simple tame
together we would burn our trail
together we could never fail.
But my passion could burn too bright
Destroy you with my heat and light
My love for you can't heal your burning
and you'd depart from here, my heart yearning.
If I were to evolve with the day
become like a god to whom you pray
my power and purity shining bright
forever would we live in the light.
But my beauty would be too great
to disappear would be your fate
and while in my glory I would shine
you'd be left far behind.
If I were to evolve with the night
my powers would become such a delight
Slink by your side under the dark
invisible and yet able to make a mark.
But darkness is not where I am content
your joy I might begin to resent
and afraid that I might disappear
I would be the one to leave out of fear.
If I were to evolve with the earth
my being consumed by the rebirth
I could easily wipe away all your tears
gently embrace you as you share your deepest fears.
But a being of the earth has no mind
no need to be spoiled and refined
So even though we'd be true to each other
despite my love, in your arms I would smother.
If I were to evolve with the snow
my reflection would point you where to go
powerful and filled with a great will
my strength a gift to you still.
But ice is sharp and harsh and sheer
we might argue, I might snap out of fear
and when it would be time to repair what had broke
your warmth would burn me, turn me into smoke.
My head droops sleepily onto your thigh
the sun slowly fading into nigh
soon it will be time to head to the west
and we to continue on our quest.
Suddenly, you lift me up to your chest
I meet your eyes, remembering my vain request
that you will love me no matter what passes
through hunger and pain and rage from the masses.
Your hand on my head silences my brain
and you tell me, "I don't mind you plain.
You can choose what form you want to be
whatever you decide will be lovely to me."
I want to stay your closest friend
and I know someday our time together will end
but promise me one thing, before our time flees
that you will always remember me.
