Rain fell in the night pitter-pattering against the window pane. Spain stared out into the darkness wondering when this storm would pass. Romano was playing up in his room on the second floor. Spain had tried to join in but little Romano would have none of it.

So now Spain was here in the living room of his house listening to the storm grow in power, the wind howling louder, and the thunder growing close enough to shake the house. He looked at the clock hanging on the wall it read 9:30.

"I should go put Romano to bed." the spaniard thought to himself as he made his way over to the stairwell that led to the second floor. Before Spain could even put his foot on the first step of the stairs, the power went out.

The darkness was suffocating, it took Spain's eyes a couple of minutes to adjust to the sudden darkness. "Spain! Where are you?" Romano cried as Spain hurried his way up the stairs. Spain tripped on the last step, sprawling his body on the padded carpet of the upper floor. Spain got up brushing himself off then ran to Romano's room which was all the way at the end of the hallway on the right.

Thunder shook the windows in their frames and the wind howled outside like that of a horror movie monster. "Romano!" Spain yelled as he pushed the door to Romano's room open. "Romano? Romano where are you?" Spain called over the increasing power of the storm.

He listened for a minute trying to hear him. Spain heard a sniffle come from inside the closet. Spain ran toward the closet, opening its door with a flourish to reveal a little Romano curled up with his back to the wall and his head in his legs, his tiny hands trying to block the sound of the storm out of his ears.

"Romano, are you ok?" Spain asked worriedly as he noticed the tears running down the child's face. "Spain!" Romano cried as he ran toward Spain. "Its alright now. I'm here." Spain answered as he wiped Romano's tears away with his finger. He wrapped the boy up in his arms hoping to stop his crying. "I-I was so scared." Romano sobbed as another clap of thunder sounded.

Romano flinched at the sound burying his head deeper into Spain's chest. Spain made sounds of comfort as he picked up the little boy and held him securely in his arms. Spain found a chair in the corner and sat in it ready to wait out the storm. Romano's cries and sobs finally subsided into soft, regular breaths of sleep. Spain hugged the little country closer as he settled deeper into the cushioned chair.

The storm finally lessened with now just the rain still hitting the window. "The power will be on tomorrow." Spain thought to himself as the comfort of the chair, the rhythm of the rain on the window, and the warmth of the one he loved so dear in his arms lulled him to sleep.
